Joining a new company and being tasked with adding value and building high-performing teams starts with one key question: what is the organizational structure? Experienced technology leader Dan Kirsche has recently joined Chamberlain Group as the Senior Vice President of Software Engineering after a robust career of leading software engineers. With innovation and team building on his mind, Dan shares key lessons in culture-creating behaviors, embracing disagreement, and successful leadership. In this episode, Dan discusses the importance of properly structured autonomous teams. He reflects on how leadership on these small teams can smoothly operate and their recommended size. Dan shares how these teams are the fundamental building blocks and that creating the right culture at the team level is essential. As a leader, Dan reveals that a continued focus on quality means that he is looped in when production issues are being discussed (Leaders, join the Slack channel!) and how strong leaders must be familiar with the severity and frequency of these issues. Beyond focusing on quality, Dan dives into additional values he seeks to find in team members growing into leadership positions. He shares how pushing into an area of discomfort is key while sharing actionable mentorship strategies for providing those challenging and meaningful growth opportunities. Acknowledging how difficult tech leadership can be, Dan discusses the role of accountability and ownership, including how leaders must demonstrate the ability to receive feedback. Dan shares how opinionated, strategically disagreeable team members add value and, alongside other qualities that make them enjoyable to work with, are key members of teams that quickly find the right answers.(01:40) – Leading software engineering at Chamberlain Group(04:20) – Driving better practices(06:57) – Culture-creating behaviors(09:52) – A focus on quality(13:28) – Organization culture vs. team culture(16:05) – Accountability and ownership(19:47) – Embracing discomfort(23:42) – Building opinionated and innovative teams(29:14) – A willingness to disagree(30:57) – On leadershipDan Kirsche is an experienced technology executive and Senior Vice President of Software Engineering at Chamberlain Group. Emma Nicholls, the ‘Diabetic Duchess' is a certified Health Coach and Food Scientist on a mission to support diabetics on their journeys to improved health and wellness. Emma has lived with Type One Diabetes for over 44 years and knows that the ownership of her longevity and well-being sits firmly in her hands. In her early 50s, Emma was faced with the prospect of facing her latter years with chronic kidney disease and poor eyesight due to the damage caused by the condition in her youth. At that time, she was offered a simultaneous kidney and pancreas transplant by her medical team. Something made her question this approach and challenge what might be possible. She started a period of frenzied research and ultimately decided not to progress with this form of treatment. Instead, she decided to quite simply ‘change her life' and to no longer be a "victim" of the condition but a believer that it was in fact, a blessing. She started to do several things to dramatically improve her diabetes control and to reverse some of her diabetes-related complications. Emma shares her personal story and insights into the world of diabetes and reclaiming health. This is her life purpose. The process is well known: before you learn to run, you learn to walk. And before you learn to walk, you learn to crawl. So why do so many entrepreneurs start at the end and develop a technology first, only to then be challenged with finding a problem and forcing them to fit? When it comes to healthcare technology, Timothy Kelley, CEO of TeleRay, has some experience in this process. There's a lot of innovation out there that's technically advanced, and could be very powerful - but it's not user-friendly or practical, and that means it's not used as intended. And while it may sound like a paradox, crawling first, though slower than running, will get you where you need to be faster: in a better position for market adoption. Tune in and discover why innovation is great, but if that innovation is not also useful, used, and practical, it's going to have a much harder time with market adoption. Here are the show highlights: This is the real definition of innovation (4:49) A 3-step commercialization strategy (10:59) The distinction between gaining customers versus growing your network (14:25) How patient engagement impacts businesses forward trajectory (19:12) The ‘PayPal' of healthcare (22:28) Marketing: word of mouth and the influence on customer advocacy (25:47) Guest Bio Timothy Kelley is CEO of TeleRay, the telehealth radiology technology leader for the management and distribution of medical images and patient information. His experience in business planning, marketing pharmacy benefit management, pharmaceutical sales, and medical equipment distribution, helped set the stage for TeleRay. As CEO of TeleRay, Tim continues to develop the company's vision of becoming the de facto standard of communications in healthcare. Tim has studied psychology and executive communications and growth at Northwestern University - Kellogg School of Management. Harnessing that nervous feeling you get before a presentation can actually help you land your message, says Northwestern University Kellogg School of Management professor Tim Calkins, author of How To Wash a Chicken: Mastering the Business Presentation. In this episode, Tim explains how presenters can turn their nerves into energy and find confidence from knowing their subject matter inside and out. Tim also answers questions that presenters often wonder but seldom have the forum to discuss, like whether you should present sitting down or standing up when your audience is gathered around a table. Interviewed by Abe Lubetkin.
