In this teaching, Shunyamurti explores the paradox at the heart of all authentic traditions: Trika's Netra Tantra calls for “supreme effort,” while other scriptures insist there is no path and no separate one to realize God. Taking us through concepts from Kabbalah, Ramana Maharshi, and Dzogchen, he reveals the synthesis: you are not the seeker in the story but the unmoving screen of pure, total consciousness on which all worlds appear. When this is realized, effort and non-effort collapse into the natural state of the Self.
Christian Pisano has been practicing Yoga for over 40 years and is one of only three people to have received an Advanced Senior Diploma from Guruji BKS Iyengar. He lived in Pune for several years and studied directly under Guruji, Geetaji and Prashantji at RIMYI.Christian shares that, over the years, his learning process has involved a lot of unlearning and deconstruction of previous understandings in order to uncover what is truly dear to his heart. His philosophical inclination has led him toward a non-dual approach rooted in the Trika system, more widely known as Kashmiri Shaivism.Christian teaches at the Iyengar Yoga Institute in Nice, France, and leads Yoga workshops across Europe. In the first part of our conversation, Christian speaks about how a sense of dissatisfaction and a deeper search in life led him to yoga, and what some of his first lessons were under the guidance of BKS Iyengar. He emphasizes that each person follows their unique process, and that the process itself becomes both guide and teacher. Christian also reflects on ideas of progress, personality, and the phenomenon of the student–teacher relationship.___https://christianpisano.com/https://www.instagram.com/yoga_iyengar_nice/
In the profound Trika text virūpākṣapañcāśikā, we learn:vimatipadamaṅga sarvaṃ mama caitanyamātmanaḥ śarīramidam |śūnyapadādīlāvadhi dṛśyatvāt piṇḍavat siddham || 2 ||O dear one, all this from the void state to the play of the Divine including even that which is heretical (i.e impure), since it appears in Consciousness, is verily established as my own body for I myself am Consciousness!sampanno'smi kṛśo'smi snihyatkaraṇo'smi modamāno'smi |prāṇimi śūnyo'smīti ca ṣaṭsu padeṣvasmitā dṛṣṭā || 3 ||“I am rich”, “I am feeble”, “I am affectionate”, “I am happy”, “I am living”, “I am the void”: the self is seen in these six states! From this we can understand that the "Self" is quite elastic! It can identify with possessions, with the body, with the thoughts and emotions in the mind, with the vitality or flow of energy and also with the void! Even saying "no-self" is a kind of self-identification! Notice: the objects, the physical body, the mental body, the energy body and the void body...these are all ways the Self can identify itself. But what exactly is the Self? It is Pure Consciousness, with the ability to expand outward or contract inward. The Self is essentially elastic in nature. Ego is not an illusory thing to be renounced with a Shakti, a power to be reclaimed and properly channelled. This is a class in our Paramārthasāra series, commenting on Verse 32:देहप्राणविमर्शनधीज्ञाननभःप्रपञ्चयोगेन। Dehaprāṇavimarśanadhījñānanabhaḥprapañcayogena|Ātmānaṁ veṣṭayate citraṁ jālena jālakāra iva ||32||How strange is it that the Self wraps Itself up by considering itself to be the body, prāna, intellectual concepts, and even the universe of ideas regarding the Void, just like a silkworm! You'll find a complete playlist of lectures on Tantra in both theory and practice here.Lectures happen live every Monday at 7pm PST and Friday 10am PST and again Friday at 6pm PST.Use this link and I will see you there:https://www.zoom.us/j/7028380815For more videos, guided meditations and instruction and for access to our lecture library, visit me at:https://www.patreon.com/yogawithnishTo get in on the discussion and access various spiritual materials, join our Discord here: https://discord.gg/U8zKP8yMrMJai Mā!Support the show
This past weekend, on Saturday, we celebrated Tārā Jayanti. It felt very fitting to give a talk praising this enigmatic form of Mā! The first thing we do in this lecture is to distinguish the very popular Tibetan Buddhist deity, Tārā from the Tantrik Hindu version. We then trace the origins of the Tibetan Buddhist Tārā to Parā Devī, the esoteric Tantrik Sarasvatī who is the absolute conception of reality in the Trika System of Non-Dual Shaivism. As an aside, we track how elements of Parā's iconography is present in the meditation/visualization mantra for Abhinava Gupta, the Trika master par excellence. We show how elements of Dakshinamurthi Stotram are also present in the Abhinava Gupta visualization mantra and that of the Goddess Parā! Having established the link between Parā and the Tibetan Buddhist Tārā, and having made the case that this is a Saumya (gentle) form of the Tārā, we then turn to the Tantrik Hindu Tārā of the cremation ground which tends to emphasize the Ghora (fierce) aspects of the Deity. We explore Tārā's link to the Tantrik left-hand (Vāma-marga) and we also compare Mā Tārā to Mā Kālī to make the case that they really are the same Being. Naturally, we say something about Tārāpītha, Mā's sacred temple in a cremation ground in the Birbhum district of Wes Bengal and about Mā's empowered saint, Vama Khepa. We tell the story of Vāsistha and how he had to go to Tibet to learn the Kaula Marga or the Vāmachāra (left-hand path) from the Buddha and how this allowed him to succeed in Tārā-sādhana and establish the holy site of Tarapeeth in Bengal as a śākta-pītha! We really get up to some Tantrik stuff in this lecture! Thanks all for coming live. Jai Mā Tārā!PS: here is our playlist on all things daśa-mahāvidya!You'll find a complete playlist of introductory lectures on Tantra in both theory and practice here. Recently, we've been asking the question How To Practice Tantra Safely and we proposed that the historical progression of ideas in Shaivism presents a kind of graded syllabus where the traditions that come earlier (like the Vedas and the Shaiva Siddhanta etc.) act as firm foundations for the traditions that emerge later, like the transgressive, non-dual Goddess-oriented traditions (Kaula etc.). Abhinava Gupta presents us with a kind of hierarchy for the various schools in Tantrāloka 29.51:1. Veda (Smārta and Śrauta)2. Vaishnava Tantra (Pañcarātra)3. Pashupāta systems (Lakulīśan etc.)4. Siddhānta5. Vāma 6. Dakshina7. Mata8. Kula9. Kaula10. Trika (kulāt parataram trika)Of course, the fact that he distinguishes "Kula" from "Kaula" is worth noting and perhaps worth discussing in depth on another occasion. In what sense the Trika is the "highest" is also worth questioning. In a sense. the Veda and Siddhānta might be the most important since they are the most foundational and yet in another sense, the Kaula and Trika might be the "best" because they are the most refined, specialized revelations of Lord Shiva for the most advanced practitioners. In any case, the world of Tantra, both Hindu and Buddhist is full of "doxographical hierarchies" like this where other schools are accepted as true and good but only insofar as they can lead to "my" school which necessarily I will position as the greatest. We find this strategy also in the Tibetan Tantra masterpiece "Progressive Stages of Meditation on Emptiness" by Khenpo Tsultrim Gyamtso Rinpoche where the various Buddhist schools are presented in a hierarchy. This approach is called "religious inclusivism" and it is certainly better than "religious exclusivism" which says "my path alone is right and other paths are wrong!." In this video, I argue for a third approach as exemplified by Sri Ramakrishna: "all paths are equally, non-hierarchically good as many aspects of the Infinitely Varied One!" This view is called religious "pluralism" and it is to this view that our lineage belongs. As such, in this video, having carefully examined these various approaches to the many schools of Tantra, we make a case for a non-sectarian reading! We present the major 8 schools of Shaivism as follows:Pāshupata dualism (includes Nyāya and Vaishesika)The Lakulīsha PāshupataShaiva Siddhānta DualismShaiva ViśishtādvaitaViśeshādvaita (Vīra Shaivism)Nandikeśvara ShaivismRaseśvara ShaivismShaiva monism (Advaita Shaiva Vada)You'll find a complete playlist of introductory lectures on Tantra in both theory and practice here. This week's episode is a conversation with accomplished artist and scholar-practitioner Christian de Vietri about his journey from the contemporary art world to the study and practice of Tantric sacred art. Christian, known for his large-scale public installations and fine art, shares how he came to know and practice non-dual Shaiva Tantra, how this transformed his approach to artistic expression, and how it led to the publication of his groundbreaking book, Trika Maṇḍala Prakāśa: Illuminating the Mandalas of Abhinavagupta's Tantrāloka—the first detailed and comprehensive study of all the mandalas presented and taught in Abhinavagupta's Tantrāloka. The conversation explores the process of reconstructing these mandalas, including the challenges of decoding encoded texts, the significance of mandalas in Tantric initiation, and the precise methodologies required to ensure their correct construction. Christian describes the artistic and spiritual insights that emerged through this work and reflects on the broader role of sacred art in preserving and transmitting the wisdom of the tradition.Discover a treasure trove of guided meditations, teachings, and courses at tantrailluminated.org. This might be the most closely guarded secret teaching in non-dual Tantra!First, we discuss some of the non-dual, "left" leaning traditions within Tantrik Shaivism with an emphasis on the Kaula marga and its profound liturgy and philosophy. Then, we introduce the "formless Kali who is pure Void", the "point in Shiva which even Shiva cannot objectify" and the 12 Kalis that are the threefold expressions of the Four Goddess of the Trika! Lots of exciting Non-Dual Tantrik material! Let's have at it! Here are a list of the secret Kali's presented in the lecture:aparā (prameya)Sṛṣṭikālī = manifesting an object internally, she then Raktakālī (bahirmkuhī) = becomes passionate towards that object Sthitināśakālī = wishes to reabsorb it and starts to internalize it Yamakālī = manifests and dissolves a "vighna" (obstacle) to re-absorption parāparā (pramāna)Saṃhārakālī = reabsorbs the object Mṛtyukālī = and contemplates "svabhava": my very nature is to reabsorb! Rudrakālī = perceives a subtle impression left over from perception + also Pure Consciousness Mārtaṇḍakālī = reabsorbs the solar-mandala of 12 faculties into the "Lord of the Circle" (ego) parā (paramātr)Paramārkakālī = reabsorbs the Lord of the Circle (ego) Kālāgnirudrakālī = reabsorbs the separation of one purusha (individual knowing subject) from another (mayīya-mala) Mahākālakālī = reabsorbs the Universal Subject (Shiva) into full expansion Mahābhairavacaṇḍograghorakālī = reabsorbs even that fully expanded ground into...what? void unspeakable! For more detailed instructions for how to perform Kālī pūjā, watch this playlist: https://www.patreon.com/collection/233799Lectures happen live every Monday at 7pm PST and Friday 10am PST and again Friday at 6pm PST.Use this link and I will see you there:https://www.zoom.us/j/7028380815For more videos, guided meditations and instruction and for access to our lecture library, visit me at:https://www.patreon.com/yogawithnishTo get in on the discussion and access various spiritual materials, join our Discord here: https://discord.gg/U8zKP8yMrMSupport the show
This week, we continue the abridged reading of Alexis Sanderson's 1986 article, Mandala and Āgamic Identity in the Trika of Kashmir. Here Sanderson unveils the role of Kāīi-based practices within the Trika tradition, exploring how Abhinavagupta infused the tradition with the transformative energy of Kāīi worship, elevating the Goddess to a central role in tantric initiation and ritual. His analysis touches on cycles of deities, the interplay of purity and impurity, and the process by which practitioners dissolve into the ‘egoless ground' of consciousness.Discover a treasure trove of guided meditations, teachings, and courses at tantrailluminated.org. This episode features a reading of Alexis Sanderson's second article, first published in 1986, entitled Mandala and Āgamic Identity in the Trika of Kashmir. Here Sanderson focuses on the esoteric and ritualistic dimensions of the Trika tradition in medieval Kashmir. In this article, we explore the themes of tantric initiation, the mandala as a tool for self-realization, and the concept of āgamic identity, which Sanderson describes as the aspirant's union with the deity self. These practices are shown to dissolve the boundaries of individual identity, replacing them with an all-encompassing awareness of the cosmos as Shiva consciousness.Discover a treasure trove of guided meditations, teachings, and courses at tantrailluminated.org. This episode concludes our reading of Chapter Five of Abhinavagupta's Tantrasāra. Here, we learn about The Rite of the Phonemes, or varṇa-uccāra (also known as varṇa-vidhi) in Sanskrit, exploring teachings on two of the most significant bīja mantras of the Trika lineage, the seed syllables of dissolution and creation. These mantras are uniquely powerful by virtue of their inherent vibrational potency which doesn't require their conceptual understanding. They are divinely revealed vibrations, the innate vibrancy of awareness itself, that transcend the need for conceptual representation by the mind. You can read the text in the related blog post here.Discover a treasure trove of guided meditations, teachings, and courses at tantrailluminated.org. On the 31st of October this year (2024), we will be celebrating Kālī Pūjā. But this Kartika new moon is also Diwali/Dīpāvalī and many will be worshipping Laxmī, who is light embodied! Last week, on this day, we celebrated the Sarat-Pūrnimā, the Autumn Full Moon which is considered to be the most auspicious, most beautiful and most charming of the full moons. Naturally, then, the full moon of autumn (which is in the month of Ashwin, following the Sharada Durgā Pūjā/Navarātri) is associated to the Goddess Laxmī.As such, on the occasion of Laxmī Pūjā last week, and to set you up for the upcoming Dīpāvalī, we gave two lectures on the Goddess in her Tantrik aspect. This first lecture deals with some of the specifics in worshipping Laxmī in a Tantrik context which you can watch here: https://youtu.be/F0jwaTkWfdw and now in the second lecture, we make a few observations about the esoteric aspects of Mā Laxmī as per the Caṇḍi, Srī Vidyā and Daśamahāvidya traditions with a reference to Parā/Sarasvatī from the Trika tradition! Abhinavagupta. Today is a very sacred day: Nāga Panchami, the Day of the Serpents! Vishnu reposes on a serpent couch named Ananta. Ananta means "un-ending", i.e Infinite. In the Taittīriya Upanishad, Brahman, the Absolute Reality is described as सत्यम् ज्ञानम् अनन्तम् ब्रह्म "satyam jñānam anantam Brahma": that which is Existence, Consciousness and Infinity. Now you might have heard a different formulation of Brahman: Sat-Cid-Ānanda, Existence-Consciousness-Bliss. Notice how Infinity is synonymous with Bliss? As we learn in the Chandogya Upanishad, यो वै भूमा तत्सुखं नाल्पे सुखमस्ति "yo vai bhūmi tat sukham, nalpe sukham asti!": Joy is vast-nes, joy is Infinity!! There is no joy in limitation! Now, taking all of this from the perspective of Shaiva Tantra: this Infinitely Free Awareness which is Innately Blissful is Śiva! God is Vimarśa-Śakti, Śiva's self-reflexivivity, i.e Awareness Reposing in Itself. This is why Vishnu (i.e, God, I.e Vimarśa) "reposes" in his serpent couch, who is called the Infinite (Consciousness). In a Shaiva sense, he is in a state of svātmaviśrantih: self-respose. This is liberation!Patañjali, the founder of Yoga philosophy is considered by our tradition to be the incarnation of the Ananta, Vishnu's serpent couch and so he is the perfect yogi, reposing in his svabhāva, his essence nature and from that arises his profound teachings on Yoga, Grammar and Medicine. Abhinavaguptapada, is known as the "new" (abhinava) serpent (guptapada) because building upon the foundations of Yoga and Samkhya, he takes the Shaiva tradition to whole new heights with his unique presentation of the Trika doctrine! Lakshmana, Rāma's brother and Rāmanūja, the founder of Viśishtadvaita Vada are also both seen as incarnations of Ananta, this Great Serpent. On a personal note, my kula devi on my Mother's side is Nageshwarī, a form of Mariamman (Kālī) to whom my grandfather was deeply devoted. He was a lifelong practitioner of Shakta Tantra who took mahāsamādhi (i.e kicked the bucket!) in the sanctum sanctorum of our family snake temple. yogena cittasya padena vācāṁ । malaṁ śarīrasya ca vaidyakena ॥ yo'pākarottamaṁ pravaraṁ munīnāṁ । patañjaliṁ prāñjalirānato'smi ॥ ābahu puruṣākāraṁ śaṅkha cakrāsi dhāriṇaṁ sahasra śīrasaṁ śvetaṁ pranamāmi patañjalim Yoga, for the mind Grammar, for the speech, Medicine for the impurities of the body, I bow to that great sage Patañjali who has given all these! This episode concludes our reading of Chapter Four of Abhinavagupta's "Tantrasāra," which we started reading in Episode 16. This part of the śākta-upāya or “Illumination of the Empowered Method” is particularly esoteric, presenting some of the most significant and traditionally secretive teachings of the non-dual Shaiva Tantra tradition. Abhinavagupta explores the various names and aspects of the ultimate principle of reality, described as both transcendent and immanent. He also introduces the three Goddesses of the Trika system, describing how all these aspects are unified under one encompassing Goddess. This is a selection of some key teachings of Abhinavagupta extracted from various sources and texts. Abhinavagupta (c. 950 – 1016 CE ) was a philosopher, mystic and aesthetician from Kashmir. He was also considered an influential musician, poet, dramatist, exegete, theologian, and logician – a polymathic personality who exercised strong influences on Indian culture. Abhinavagupta was born in a Brahmin family of scholars and mystics and studied all the schools of philosophy and art of his time under the guidance of as many as fifteen (or more) teachers and gurus. In his long life he completed over 35 works, the largest and most famous of which is Tantrāloka, an encyclopedic treatise on all the philosophical and practical aspects of Kaula and Trika (known today as Kashmir Shaivism).
In this lecture, we are going to discuss the Abhāsa-Vada (Reflection Model) of Kaula Trika Tantra: how is it that the one Unchanging Absolute, śiva, manifests playfully as this dazzling display of phenomena called the world without (a) losing pristine transcendent nature (b) while actually literally and really manifesting as everyone and everything? This sounds like a flat out contradiction. What's more, tonight I'm going to show how Kaula Trika Śaivism gives us a worldview that is neither Realism nor Idealism (as we carefully introduced last week), but something that is better and more satisfying than both! Naturally, to demonstrate this, we'll compare Trika to Ramanuja's parinama-vada (real transformation model) and Shankara's vivārta-vada (illusory appearance model). Then, at the very end of the lecture, I'm going to offer the mantra OM Namah Shivāyah and Mā willing, explain its esoteric significance in light of what was discussed. This understanding is intended to empower your practice and allow you to experience everyone and everything as nothing but God! Now, this discussion is extremely philosophically subtle. As Abinava Gupta himself says in Tantrāloka II.28:Durvijñeyā hi sāvasthā kimapyetad anuttaram"It is very difficult to understand this state and hence it is called the Absolute (anuttara)" Nevertheless, let me offer one reason why it is very important to understand this idea:In Indian philosophy, to know is to become (brahma veda brahmaiva bhavati). A darśana, or philosophical view, is about realization and experience. The words that describe that realization are secondary and yet because the words carry with them the power of the realization, they can act as a doorway through which one realizes for themselves the state to which they point. That's probably why Abinava Gupta uses the term āvastha here in the quote, to mean "state". So ideally, by the end of tonight's lecture, you won't leave with merely understanding but with realization.Lectures happen live on zoom every Monday at 7pm PST and Friday 10am PST and Friday at 6pm PST. There's Q&A right after the lectures. It is free and open to the public. In this week's episode I speak to Collette Davis who is a Yoga teacher of embodied flow and founded her own school of yoga in 2019. Collette is deeply connected to her intuition and we hear how as a child she felt connected to her environment around her and later learned to reconnect as an adult. She shares with us the details of what embodied flow actually is and how it is a radical shift from attending yoga classes where you are instructed and can just switch your mind off. We learn how the guided classes look for both the teacher and students to access their intuition. Collette asks us to consider what our doorway to intuition might be and if we are curious enough to search for it to find our flow. This discussion is about trust, flow, connecting to source and so much more. I can't wait for you to listen.About Collette:A dedicated student of classical Tantric philosophy and the school of Embodied Flow™, Collette honors her teachers Tara Judelle, Leila Sadeghee, Bridget Luff, Hareesh Wallis, Adyashanti and the Trika lineage of Non-Dual Kashmir Shaivism. A devoted practitioner, she shares the teachings and practices that continue to have a profound impact on her view and experience of reality.Curating powerful containers and safe spaces, Collette's classes are an ongoing inquiry into embodied liberation, inspired by the work and research of Tara Judelle and the Embodied Flow™ school. She facilitates intuitive moving meditations that guide students into the liminal and imaginal realms of the somatic unconscious to attune to the creative power of life through movement. Her great love is kula and she is inspired by the power of community and the circular way in which we can create together and support one other.Website: www.samavesa.yogaInstagram: http://instagram.com/collettedavisyogaAbout Meghan:Meghan Field is an intersectional social justice activist, Qoya Teacher, Intuitive Embodiment and Practical Magic Coach, Moon Mna/Irish Celtic lineage practitioner and Owner of Sacred Kernow Retreats. The anuttarāṣṭikā is a hymn of eight (aṣṭikā) verses by Abhinavagupta, on the method of anupāya (no method) in the light of the highest reality/supreme –anuttara. The teaching on anupāya, as elaborated in this hymn, have been revered by Kashmir Shaiva Pandits since their inception by Shaiva Master Abhinavagupta, who devoted the second chapter of his magnum opus – Tantrāloka – to the method (upāya) known as anupāya, which literally means ‘no method'. Abhinavagupta (c. 950 – 1016 ) was a philosopher, mystic and aesthetician from Kashmir. He was also considered an influential musician, poet, dramatist, exegete, theologian, and logician – a polymathic personality who exercised strong influences on Indian culture.

About the Tantraloka Abhinavagupta says the following: "This Tantrāloka is the manifestation of the three and a half streams of divine nectar which encompass the essence of all spiritual wisdom. With its broad sweep, it embodies in its exposition the quintessence of the Trika school of thought. (Tantrāloka 36.15) In this excerpt from the Light on the Tantra of Kashmir Shaivism, Abhinavagupta's Tantraloka, Volume One Swami Lakshmanjoo explains the real cause of liberation. https://www.lakshmanjooacademy.org/wp/wp-content/uploads/TL1_liberation-knowledge.mp3 Audio 9 - 05:30 क्रिया हि नाम विज्ञानान्नान्यद्वस्तु क्रमात्मताम् । उपायवशतः प्राप्तं तत्क्रियेति पुरोदितम् ॥२३१॥ kriyā hi nāma vijñānānnānyadvastu kramātmatām / upāyavaśataḥ prāptaṁ tatkriyeti puroditam //231// This kriyopāya,617 which is called āṇavopāya, which is one with āṇavopāya, is not other than vijñānopāya.618 This upāya, this means, is also residing in the field of knowledge; this means of action is also residing in the field of knowledge. This is also one with vijñāna (nānyat vastu). Kramātmatam upāyavaśataḥ prāptaṁ, knowledge residing in the field of succession is called jñāna śakti. Knowledge residing above the field of succession is called icchā śakti. Knowledge residing below the field of succession is called kriyā śakti. Knowledge is the thing. Knowledge is upwards and downwards. Knowledge residing above the field of succession, . . . JOHN: That’s in icchā śakti. SWAMIJI: . . . that is icchā śakti. JOHN: Then knowledge residing in succession . . . SWAMIJI: In succession is jñāna śakti. Knowledge residing below succession [is kriyā śakti]. JOHN: But what is “below succession”? What does it mean, “below succession”? SWAMIJI: When there is no touch of knowledge in action. JOHN: When it is just action. SWAMIJI: When it is just action–pūjā, worship, [when there is] no awareness. SCHOLAR: Yogāntatām. SWAMIJI: Yogāntatām, prāptaṁ tatkriyeti puroditam,619 that is kriyā śakti. DEVOTEE: (inaudible) pāyavaśataḥ prāptaṁ tat kriya. SWAMIJI: That is kriyā. So, in fact, kriyā, jñāna, and icchā are one. SCHOLAR: Triśūla. SWAMIJI: Audio 9 - 07:22 सम्यग्ज्ञानं च मुक्त्येककारणं स्वपरस्थितम् । यतो हि कल्पनामात्रं स्वपरादिविभूतयः ॥२३२॥ samyagjñānaṁ ca muktyekakāraṇaṁ svaparasthitam / yato hi kalpanāmātraṁ svaparādivibhūtayaḥ //232// The cause of liberation, the cause of getting liberation, is not the master, is not the effort of the disciple, is not the effort of the master. The real cause of liberation is just where there is knowledge. Where there is knowledge, the appearance of knowledge, [that] is the cause of liberation. Svaparasthitam, it may reside in the master, it may be residing in the disciple, we don’t stress on that, we stress on knowledge. That perfect knowledge of Self is the cause of liberation. It may be residing in the master or it may be residing in the disciple. Yato hi kalpanāmātraṁ svaparādi vibhūtayaḥ, “This is the master,” “This is the disciple,” what does that [matter]? There is no difference! You may perceive that supreme knowledge in your master, [then] you are liberated! It doesn’t matter if [supreme knowledge] is not residing in you! Wherever it is residing, you are liberated. It may reside in the master, it may reside in you (in the disciple). Because, yato hi kalpanāmātraṁ svaparādo vibhūtayaḥ, “This is the master,” “This is the disciple,” this is all the ignorant way of understanding, the incorrect way of understanding. The correct way of understanding is, wherever there is knowledge, that is liberation. It may be residing in Lord Śiva, it may be residing in you. If you once perceive that it is residing in Lord Śiva, you are liberated. You may not perceive that it is residing in me.620 So there is faith: if you believe that your master is filled with the glory of awareness, [then] you are filled with the glory of awareness...

Mary Reilly Nichols holds a BA in anthropology from Harvard University. is the Director of Nalanda Institute’s Yoga, Mind & Spirit and has been teaching yoga from a devotional/experiential perspective for over 30 years. She specializes in direct transmission experiential Yoga with an emphasis on the development of wisdom and direct experience through the lens of the non-duality traditions of Advaita Vedanta, and the Tantric methods of the Trika school of Kashmir Shaivism and Kundalini Yoga. Her meeting in the mid-1970”s with the Siddha Master, Baba Muktananda, a Shaktipat Guru, changed the trajectory of her life. She spent 5 years under Muktananda’s direct tutelage living in his residential ashrams both in India and here in the US. She currently teaches in a diverse range of settings from academia, to yoga studios and Institutes, to stress management in psychiatric clinical settings and is involved in ongoing research on the mind/body benefits of yoga and meditation. Her story is unusual in many ways, but importantly she began her remarkable and often dramatic journey as a very normal young college freshman when the latent Kundalini energy awoke, quite spontaneously while she was studying in her dorm room. She had no interest in spirituality and describes her normalcy in her writings about her awakening on her website, http://www.meditationmary.com/home/ “I first met Shiva one evening in my dorm room during my freshman year at college. It was a few weeks into the first fall semester at Harvard. I had scored a single room as a freshman by claiming on my roommate questionnaire that I was impossible to live with, had erratic sleep habits, and smoked minimally 2 packs a day, which was all true.”“There were a handful of people I knew in those days who meditated but the whole thing held no appeal for me, I thought it looked pointlessly unproductive and boring.”The intensity of her study and depth of her experience is very insightful and instructive, particularly for those who will never meet a true Shaktipat Guru in the physical form. She is adamant about the fact that you can still have a very rich and satisfying relationship with the Supreme Guru who resides in your heart as the essence of your breath. In our conversation, she elaborates on the details of how she engages this divine relationship. This is a conversation not to be missed. In fact, you may find yourself listening to it several times.
