This week on the Hemp Show, we head to Tucson, Arizona, where Micaela Machado of Old Pueblo Hemp Co. is leading a hemp-building revolution. She said she hopes “Tucson becomes a hub for natural building and specifically hemp. I think Tucson, Arizona, is right for building, for processing. We have all the right weather and lots of land to do it with.” Machado is a general contractor with a background in sculpture and landscape architecture, and she's bringing her deep passion for sustainability and natural building to the hemp industry. Her passion is fueled by a drive to provide healthier housing alternatives for people. New houses are often made from hazardous materials that emit dangerous chemicals into the home, she said. “Every night we're sleeping in these Tupperware airtight toxic containers. And so I think that opens people's eyes” to natural building materials, she said. We'll hear how she made the leap from sculpting concrete for zoos and aquariums to pioneering hemp construction in the Southwest. She shares her “aha” moment with hemp and how her work is transforming communities, from feature walls to full-scale commercial projects. Plus, we'll get the details on the Hemp Building Fiesta, happening March 28-30 in Tucson — a hands-on workshop featuring some of the biggest names in the industry, including Sergiy “Dr. Hemphouse” Kovalenkov, Danny DeJarlais from Lower Sioux, Mary Jane Oatman from the Indigenous Cannabis Industry Association and more. Also on the show, host Eric Hurlock gives the show's new guest host Sophia a crash coarse in building with hemp. Topics Covered: ✅ Micaela's journey from sculpture to hemp construction ✅ The origins of Old Pueblo Hemp Co. ✅ The unique challenges and opportunities for hemp building in the desert ✅ Tucson's first permitted hemp construction project ✅ The upcoming Hemp Building Fiesta — who's coming, what's happening, and why you should be there ✅ The future of hemp construction in Arizona Links & Resources: ✅  Old Pueblo Hemp Co. ✅  Hemp Building Fiesta Registration Thanks to our sponsors: ✅ IND Hemp – Family-owned hemp feed, food, and fiber company bringing new opportunities to farmers and manufacturers across the U.S. ✅ Americhanvre Cast Hemp – Providing educational resources and hands-on workshops for the hemp building community. ✅ Forever Green – Distributors of the KP4 Hemp Cutter. Taylor Lideen is a a professional off-road bike racer with an extensive resume of strong two-wheeled results. But he's far more than a rider. This is hands down one of my favorite and most meaningful conversations to date.  In this episode of The Bounce Forward Podcast, Taylor and I will explore his struggles with anxiety and depression, while also diving into his mission to be a mental health advocate. From wins and podiums ultra endurance races like 24 Hours in the Old Pueblo and Unbound XL, to Marathon National Championships, True Grit and Rule of Three, to spending weeks at a time in bed when in the midst of a mental health episode, we'll discuss how Taylor is shifting his mindset, courageously and passionately bouncing forward day after day.  Taylor Lideen is not only a testament to a resilient and tenacious human that is living the BA Way (the Be Audacious Way), but he's the personification of what it looks like to bounce forward—not one time from an injury, but every day, while navigating depression and anxiety.  In this episode, Taylor and I share our stories and struggles with depression, getting raw, real and vulnerable, in hopes of truly connecting, while destigmatizing depression and mental health challenges. The guards are down, the masks are off, and we both share some dark times and deep stories from the depths of despair. Anyone who has or knows a family member or close friend who has experienced depression, anxiety or mental health challenges will relate to the waves we ride in this episode, and I'm pretty sure that you'll find Taylor's story to be a lifeline, buoying us up when the waves are crashing down.  Taylor's website: https://www.taylorlideen.com/ Taylor's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/tlideen/ Taylor's Film: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BoTCH2oEGUk Leadville 100 Fundraiser: firstdescents.org/fundraiser/ Website: beaudacious.com Michael's Instagram: @michaelleachba Show's Instagram: @thebounceforward This episode was powered by The Bicycle Station

After participating in the Life Time Grand Prix in its first two years, Taylor Lideen missed out on a spot this year. While that might leave some riders struggling for motivation, it's done the opposite for him. Two weeks ago, at Sea Otter (the first Grand Prix race of the season), he snagged 6th place, just seconds off the podium. The next weekend, he placed 6th at Whiskey Off Road. In February, he and Lachlan Morton set a decisive record at 24 Hours in the Old Pueblo. Taylor attributes these results to multiple factors, including a brand new approach to training that has put him in the best shape of his career. Without the pressure of having to wrestle for points at all the Grand Prix races this year, he's pursuing an ambitious and varied schedule, including Unbound XL, Leadville, and Vapor Trail.Taylor sat down with Payson in Bentonville this week to talk about missing out on the Grand Prix, why his new training methods might be controversial for some, and why seat tube angle was one of the things he was most excited about when he joined Allied this year. They also talk about the exacting approach to nutrition that helped him win Unbound XL in 2021 and the time he came face-to-face with a mountain lion on a training ride.Instagram: @theadventurestacheYouTube: Payson McElveen

In this conversation, the hosts discuss various topics related to cycling, including peeing during a race, dream bikes, power output and performance, and fueling during long races.   Takeaways   Mic troubles and lack of preparedness can affect the start of a podcast. Hard training camps can be challenging but can also provide valuable experiences. Comfortable mattresses are important for a good night's sleep at training camps. Pacing strategies are crucial in 24-hour races. Lapped races can offer unique challenges and opportunities for riders. Team events can provide camaraderie and a different racing experience. Choosing the right teammate is crucial in team-based races like the Lifetime Grand Prix. Tire choice is a personal preference, with some riders preferring narrower tires for perceived speed and others opting for wider tires for increased traction and comfort. Testing tire performance can be subjective, and different testing methods may yield different results. Flat tires can be a significant challenge in gravel races, and riders employ various strategies to minimize the risk. Understanding the course details and decisive sections of a race can help riders plan their strategies and tire choices. Consider the timing and scheduling of events to avoid conflicts with other races. Ear flap helmets may provide aerodynamic advantages and reduce wind noise. Riding into a headwind can feel worse than climbing due to expectations and lack of reward. Chain waxing can provide a smooth and clean drivetrain, but proper application is important. Bonk Bros offers a range of products for cyclists, including chain waxing systems. The choice between 650B and 700C gravel tires depends on the specific race and conditions. Peeing in bibs during races can be a time-saving strategy, especially in cold and wet conditions. Peeing during a race can be a necessary strategy to stay warm and maintain performance. Dream bikes vary for each individual, and sponsorship can limit the options available. Power output and performance are key factors in cycling, and different riders have different strengths. Fueling properly during long races is crucial for maintaining energy levels and performance.   Chapters   00:00 Introduction and Mic Troubles 01:22 Discussion about Hard Training Camps 03:52 Complaints about Mattresses at Camp 04:56 Preparations for the Mid-South Race 09:57 Review of the 24 Hours of Old Pueblo Race 14:19 Pacing Strategies in 24-Hour Races 18:00 Discussion about Lapped Races 19:21 Other 24-Hour Races and Team Events 23:58 Debate about Team vs Solo Racing 25:24 Discussion about the Lifetime Grand Prix and choosing teammates 28:44 Conversation about the new Challenge tire 30:48 Debate on tire width preferences 35:09 Debate on tire testing methods 39:14 Discussion about the BWR Arizona race 42:21 Review of the BWR Arizona course 45:13 Debate on flat tires and tire choices 48:12 Discussion about the course details of BWR Arizona 49:41 Discussion about hosting events and ear flap helmets 52:00 Why riding into a headwind feels worse than riding up a climb 54:41 Conversation about chain waxing and the Silca Crockpotinator 4000 57:00 Discussion about the benefits of using a wax chain 01:01:15 Introduction of Bonk Bros as a sponsor 01:08:31 Conversation about using other lubes and sponsors 01:09:34 Comparison between 650B and 700C gravel tires 01:12:42 Discussion about peeing in bibs during races 01:14:14 Peeing during a race 01:16:00 Dream bikes 01:19:00 Power output and performance 01:22:00 Fueling during long races 01:23:05 Conclusion

This week Clint and Dawson sit down with Katrine Hase. Katrine last summer "2023 set out on her bicycle from Jasper, Alberta Canada to ride to Antelope Wells, New Mexico along the Great Divide. Katrine did this amazing trip because she wanted to do something epic to celebrate her 50th year on the planet and her 10th year of sobriety. What better way than to spend two months in the mountains cycling? With the support of family she sets off on this solo journey. Her journey on the Great Divide is uniquely hers with a few detours along the way to fit her needs and adapt to weather, safety, bike repairs and keep moving forward. Early in her recovery, she realized that she needed to find new social outlets that no longer involved alcohol. She started taking movement classes called Nia, which led her to try ballroom dancing and finally to sign up for an adult ballet class. Luckily, around the time she was hitting limits in dance, she rediscovered biking. Katrina's son was working at a bike shop and starting to get involved in mountain biking. He and Katrina's husband were having a lot of fun on bikes, so eventually she took a leap and purchased a bike of her own. From there, there has been no stopping her. Ever since he was a child, Taylor Lideen knew he experienced the world differently. Even before he knew that he suffered from depression and anxiety, he noticed that his emotions seemed to run higher than other people's. As a teen, he struggled with his mental health even as he built a  successful career as a cyclist. Over the years, he's won 24 Hours in the Old Pueblo and Unbound XL, and is competing in the Life Time Grand Prix for the second time this year. But his bouts with crippling depression have been a consistent presence in his life, both on and off the bike. Last year, he released a film, Shifting Mindset, in which he opens up for the first time about his struggles with mental health. In this week's episode, Taylor talks about navigating depression and anxiety as a child, and how his love of cycling was both an escape and a trigger. He talks about how meeting his wife Mary in high school changed his life, how his relationship with his dad was caught up in his anxiety about attaining race results, and the therapy he credits with saving his life. Since speaking openly about his battle with mental health, Taylor says he's felt a sense of relief. He tells Payson why he felt it was the right time to address his struggles publicly, and how he's hoping others might benefit from hearing his story. Instagram: @theadventurestache

During this journey, the duo pulled and paddled specially modified canoes across 550 miles of shifting sea ice and open ocean.   Eric successfully led his first expedition to the South Pole in 2008, covering nearly 600 miles in 41 days. Eric is now one of only a few Americans in to have skied to both the North and South Poles.   In November 2009, Eric returned to Antarctica for the first leg of his world record Save the Poles expedition. This time he completed a 750-mile ski traverse to the geographic South arriving on January 2, 2010.   Two short months later he was dropped off at northern Ellesmere Island for a winter-style North Pole Journey. The international team reached the North Pole 51 days later on Earth Day - April 22, 2010.   He completed the Save the Poles expedition by reaching the summit of Mt. Everest on October 15th, 2010 becoming the first person in history to reach the world's three 'poles' within a 365-day period.   In March 2014, Eric Larsen and Ryan Waters set out to traverse nearly 500 miles across the melting Arctic Ocean, unsupported, from Northern Ellesmere Island to the geographic North Pole. Despite being one of the most cold and hostile environments on the planet, the Arctic Ocean has seen a steady and significant reduction of sea ice over the past seven years due to climate change. Because of this, Larsen's and Waters' trip—dubbed the "Last North Expedition"—is expected to be the last human-powered trek to the North Pole, ever. Her vision and leadership led the development and implementation of USA Triathlon's most recent strategic plan – Elevate 2028 – that sets the path for the organization through the LA 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games.   “I'm honored to lead USA Triathlon during such an important time, and I want to thank Joel, the USA Triathlon Board of Directors and members of the hiring committee for the opportunity,” Brumfield said. “Multisport is transformative, unifying and empowering, and I am proud and ready to wake up every morning and bring this sport and community to more people. I look forward to working closely with our constituents and team to continue to spread the virtues of our sport far and wide, serve our community in a way that enables everyone to prosper, build on the development programs for youth and junior athletes, and celebrate our sport and community every day.”   A trailblazer and advocate throughout her career, Brumfield was hired as the first female member of the USA Triathlon's Executive Leadership Team. Brumfield's leadership has elevated and empowered female leaders within the organization at every level of the organization. Additionally, Brumfield has been a staunch proponent of diversity, equality, inclusion and access (DEIA) during her time at USA Triathlon and worked to make DEIA a focal point of the organization's long-term strategic plan, annual priorities and hiring processes, among other areas.   Brumfield has helped transform USA Triathlon's approach to service and the constituents it serves, most notably race directors, clubs, coaches, officials and age-group athletes. She has instilled a focus on building meaningful relationships with community members across the United States and emphasized the need for both resource development and initiatives and programs that drive value at the grassroots level.   Prior to her appointment as interim CEO Brumfield most recently served as USA Triathlon's Chief of Staff and Chief Business Development Officer. She led the turnaround of USA Triathlon from a transactional entity to an organization celebrated for its service leadership by fostering a culture of collaboration both internally and externally. With a people-first approach, Brumfield helped USA Triathlon earn best-place-to-work recognition by Front Office Sports, Outside Magazine, and Colorado Springs Gazette.   In 2020 Brumfield was named the Chief Business Development Officer, in addition to her Chief of Staff role, and led business development and partnerships. Under her leadership,U USA Triathlon led unprecedented commercial growth and strategic partnerships, even while navigating the Covid-19 pandemic.   In her role as Chief of Staff, Brumfield was responsible for directing strategic planning, managing and streamlining the organization's operational plan, and overseeing cross-functional projects with large-scale organizational impact. She also directly oversaw business administration including human resources, finance, and information technology (IT), for three years.   Brumfield currently serves on the World Triathlon Audit Committee and was a member of the SportsBusiness Journal “Game Changers: Women in Sports Business” 2020 Class.   Prior to USA Triathlon, Brumfield worked in the endurance sports industry for nearly 20 years across a number of roles that gave her both a broad understanding of the business of the sport and the opportunity to grow and inspire triathlon communities at the local level. Most recently, she was a founding member of the Virgin Sport start-up in Sir Richard Branson's global Virgin Group. Before Virgin, Victoria's roots were deeply embedded in triathlon as the former Event Director for the New York City Triathlon, IRONMAN US Championship, 2003 ITU World Cup in New York City, 2005 ITU Age Group World Championships in Hawaii, and 2004 USA Olympic trials for Triathlon, among others.   Brumfield is a passionate amateur short and long-distance triathlete and endurance athlete. She studied finance and earned a Master of Business Administration from the NYU Stern School Of Business. She currently resides in Colorado Springs, Colo.   You Get What You Give, Ask Primal Why By Bill Plock Nov 6, 2022–Denver  In 1998, The New Radicals released the song, “You Get What You Give” and it seems to have resonated strongly as a business mantra with premier cycling apparel manufacturer Primal of Denver.   As I looked around the room at the Four Seasons conference room during the PrimalBike 2022 gathering a couple of weeks ago, it dawned on me that between all of the rides represented here, well over $150 million is raised each and every year for a variety of causes; cancer, diabetes, Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, college scholarships, community causes and so much more.   Between the rides, tens of thousands of riders explore roads in every corner of America. The reason they were all in Denver? Primal, a thirty-year-old company supplies cycling clothing for all of these rides and the cyclists who spend hours raising money and a lifetime rolling on roads.   Thirty years ago, Dave Edwards made some cool cycling t-shirts and sold them out of the back of his car in Moab. They were a hit and one thing has led to another and thousands upon thousands of designs later Primal has evolved into one of cycling's top brands of cycling wear.   Each year, Primal invites some of their top customers to meet and discuss the “state of the union” in cycling events and ponder the future, and share ideas on how to improve events and the sport of cycling. This year's attendee's included leaders from MS, RAGBRAI, Bike New York, Pan-Mass Challenge, Outside, and many others. All of the organizations attending, some for-profit and most non-profits, raise enormous money, but so does Primal.   Since its inception, Primal has given away over 12 million dollars. Says founder, President/CEO Dave Edwards about the gathering, “the most meaningful part is making connections and sharing knowledge and experiences. We're privileged to work with incredible partners, and we wanted to provide an opportunity for them to get together in a setting that inspires learning, conversations, and relationship building that makes their events even better while getting more people on bikes.”   The Pan-Mass Challenge, in particular, raising $63million in one ride for cancer research leads the peloton of charity. Said President, Jarrett Collins, “Primal is a great partner for the Pan-Mass Challenge because they support many of our teams with high-quality kits, AND they give back to the fundraising efforts of those teams, all in the service of defeating cancer!”   The group had break-out sessions focused on discussing a variety of topics ranging from sustainability to trends such as gravel, or as Jarrett Collins termed, “unpaved”. Steve Schulz from Cycle Oregon gave us a peek behind the curtains of their Community of Giving (COG) program and the impact their ride has on its communities and how it helps build everything from community centers to improving community relationships.   The group took to the streets and rode bikes to further build camaraderie and consider ideas aimed at getting more people on bikes and raising more money.   Ken Podziba, President of Bike New York holds the largest one-day ride in the United States, the Five Boro Bike Tour with over 32,000 riders (303 articles about the ride HERE) and said of the conference, “the conference, which was interesting, engaging, informative, and entertaining, provided an opportunity to learn from and collaborate with some of our country's top bike event organizers.  I left Denver with a much greater knowledge of Primal's creative and managerial processes, learning things we can apply to our events, and making some awesome new friends – now that's a successful conference!”   If you measure yourself by the peers you attract, Primal has attracted many of the best of the best when it comes to top cycling events and raising money for good causes. You Get What You Give seemed more than obvious at PrimalBike 2022.   Aspen unicyclist left his mark on famed Iron Horse Bicycle Classic It's only fitting that Aspen's Mike “Pinto” Tierney is going out “No. 1” in the Iron Horse Bicycle Classic.   Not “No. 1” as in the fastest in the famed race and recreational ride between Durango and Silverton. Nor did he log the most years riding in the event, which celebrated its 50th anniversary this year on Memorial Day Weekend.   Instead, he is the guy who has turned heads for tackling the grueling 47-mile ride over two mountain passes exceeding 10,000 feet on one wheel.   In Aspen, Tierney is famed for working 40 years on the exalted Aspen Highlands Ski Patrol and for regularly riding his unicycle up Independence Pass and Maroon and Castle Creek roads — and even on a variety of mountain bike trails in the Roaring Fork Valley.   In Durango and Silverton, he's known as the crazy dude who rides a one-wheeled cycle with no brakes up and down some of the most challenging passes in Colorado.   “A 63-year-old unicycling 50 miles from Durango to Silverton sounds a little crazy. I don't mind being called crazy,” Tierney said.   This year's event was his eighth and final Iron Horse. “I was the only unicyclist to do it, ever,” he said. Others started, none finished. He heard of a unicyclist from Cortez who rode the route, just not during the Iron Horse.   Unicycles weren't allowed in the event prior to 2005. Rules changed and Tierney jumped at the opportunity — and promptly got humbled. Six unis started. The other riders dropped out along the route. Tierney started with the two-wheeled riders and was quickly left in the dust. One restaurant hung a sign on the door saying, “Free food to Lance Armstrong and any unicyclist that finishes.” By the time Tierney finished, the restaurant was closed for the day because all riders had long since finished.   He changed strategy the next time he rode it in 2015. He started an hour early and got the flats north of Durango out of the way. In that and subsequent years, he got used to the racers sweeping by him on lower Coal Bank Pass, then the recreational riders catching him higher up the major ascent. He completes the ride between 6 and 6.5 hours.   It's not about finishing fast. It's about finishing on one wheel. Other cyclists marvel at how he can tackle the steep ascents and hair-raising downhills on a cycle with one speed and no brake. He rides a 36-inch wheel. He grinds up with 170mm crank arms and swaps them out to 140mm for the downhills.   Over the 45 years since he started riding a unicycle, he's learned to seek the slow cadence of pedal strokes on the downhill. If he cannot maintain it and gets going too quickly, he's got to jump off. He's never had to do it in his eight Iron Horses. While bicycle riders get to coast on the downhills, Tierney still has to work.   For Tierney, it was particularly humbling to get accolades in a couple of notable celebrations of the Iron Horse's 50th anniversary. There is a section about him in a book marking the anniversary, “Fiftieth Anniversary, Looking Back Racing Forward” by John Peel. His accomplishments also are included in a special exhibit at Fort Lewis College's Center of Southwest Studies. The exhibit, “Looking Back, Racing Ahead: 50 Years of the Iron Horse Bicycle Classic and Durango Cycling Culture,” is on display until spring 2023.     Invitation to TriDot Pre Season Project The Preseason Project® is a triathlon research initiative that helps TriDot quantify and enhance the performance gains that TriDot's Optimized Training™ delivers over training alternatives. He served with distinction and a Boston attitude! It is my honor to have him share his legacy on the show, I'm so glad he accepted my invite and hung out for a few hours. Please, give him a warm Choir Practice welcome and enjoy the show...Be safe out there y'all!

The titles of these episodes usually have a little blurb to describe the guest. This ended up as "Professional Cyclist" but I thought of "winner of bike races all the freakin' time" or "winning bike races like it's his job" or "champion of all kinds" because frankly he's winning everything in sight. But better yet, Keegan is a super kind person and doesn't just ride bikes with a number of his handlebars but sets cool records like the White Rim FKT or Everest world record or chasing the 24 Hours of Old Pueblo.  Sit down and enjoy this podcast on the heels of another recent victory as Keegan just won the Crusher in the Tusher. Let's hear all about it.

Keegan Swenson joins Payson one week after setting a course record at 24 Hours in the Old Pueblo. They talk about his pivot toward endurance racing after narrowly missing out on a spot at the Olympics for XC, and how he managed to beat out stiff competition to take the top step at 24 HOP in spite of it being his first 24-hour solo race. He talks about how his XC training informs his endurance racing mentality in good and bad ways, and the gravel rookie who he thinks is the rider to beat in the upcoming gravel Grand Prix. He also talks about whether he has plans to dip a toe into road racing now that he's jumping into the gravel scene, and his no-holds-barred racing mentality.

Time and dedication are the biggest challenges faced by developing leaders. Being a leader requires you to balance your time between your leadership duties and your personal life. You need to ensure employee development and well-being, while also making sure that their individual goals align with the organization's overall objectives. In this episode, Mike is joined by Marianne Scarzello, an internationally recognized speaker on leadership, management, service and customer relations. She shares tips on employee development, interdepartmental communication, and valuable advice for new CEOs and HR representatives for developing a productive work culture.EPISODE 5 SUMMARY & HIGHLIGHTSWhat are some challenges to good leadership?6:20Time and dedication are the biggest challenges that we observe in developing leaders. Leaders should also make sure that the employees are given adequate time to attend training sessions and to learn new skills. Sometimes all the work can be overwhelming, so you need to break it into step by step. The leaders should also make sure that there is a proper two way communication between them and their employees. What are some steps you can take to make sure that the employeeshave adequate resources for their development?8:02I generally take a long walk around the office during which I interact with the employees. I ask them about their work and what work based challenges they are facing at the moment. Those conversations can go a long way when it comes to understanding the situation and getting a better idea of the current scenario. What criteria do you look for when selecting someone for the team?10:31They need to have a drive to learn and grow. It's important for them to prove that they need to make the current situation more efficient. No one is perfect. We all make mistakes. The person needs to take the effort to improve and make the necessary changes. Another criterion to look at is interdepartmental communication. That's a huge factor when it comes to smooth running of the organization. If you feel like your team is doing something that is not necessary, you need to intervene and make changes. So that extra communication and the willingness to go and talk with other teams is a big criteria for us.How do you consistently train people?12:34In the case of supervisors, I constantly ask them to get feedback. I train them on getting feedback. We are not getting anywhere if we don't get adequate feedback, especially when it comes to training employees. You've got to understand how to make your team be the best that they can be. It's a challenge to train to ask feedback, because no entry level employee is going to give negative feedback voluntarily. Every year we have a day dedicated to training where we go to another location. We work on communication and efficiency. The recent activity we did was where we had each team write down one of their drawback points, which they didn't know how to fix. Then we took that piece of paper and we gave it to the next team. They wrote down a potential solution from that point of view. We did that three more times. So by the end, we had full potential solutions that we could then discuss. I think that this actually brought people to look at the whole company as the team rather than the individual units. What is some advice you would like to give a fresh HR director or a CEO?19:00You need to focus on the individuals rather than only the end results. You have company goals as well asindividual goals. You need to learn how to align those two. According to Dr. Daniel Pink, the three elements of intrinsic motivation are: autonomy, mastery and...
