In a year of historic elections across the world, one of the most unforgettable moments in a debate was Donald Trump saying “they're eating the dogs, they're eating the cats”. But it took a South African musician David Scott, AKA The Kiffness, to turn that into a viral hit viewed about 100 million times already. However, he has become embroiled in another international political storm after objecting to statements made by Gift of the Givers Founder Dr Imtiaz Sooliman. This after he had previously been labelled a racist for his parody of the National Anthem after Dr Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma banned cigarettes during COVID. In this interview with BizNews, he shares the stories behind these parodies. He also reminds Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) President Julius Malema that he has broken a big promise. Meanwhile, The Kiffness remains defiant in the face of daily threats as he prepares to tour the UK, the US, Europe, and Australia next year.

Our guest in episode is an extraordinarily talented and courageous young man whom the Scott family call David but the rest of South Africa knows as The Kiffness. His wildly popular musical parodies and satirical Youtube videos have attracted millions upon millions of viewers, turning the mild mannered musician into one of the most recognizable faces in the country. The one-time medical student's art hasn't been without risk, however, with occasional puffed up politicians taking sufficient umbrage, occasionally letting lose their social media attack dogs. But as you'll hear in this deeply moving discussion with a 32 year old with wisdom well beyond his years, The Kiffness is unbowed. Because he figures that without freedom of expression, there're no point in calling ourselves a democracy.
Nathan Ro bounced onto the music scene as a contestant on Project Fame. His laid back, acoustic beach boy style won him many fans on the show in which he placed second. Ro then formed the mischievous, electro-rock band Lonehill Estate which toured Europe and the US with hit singles such as Daans, Technoband and Look Good. In a drastic turn of genre, Nathan Ro teamed up with Graeme Watkins and Loyiso Bala to form the swinging super-group Swing City. Ro's most recent release was a colab with The Kiffness called Wiggle A Bit which blew up in February this year. Now, Nathan Ro has released a new solo album entitled African Grey which takes him all the way back to his "beachsand and cocktails" style that started it all. The album is a collection of songs about South African cities with 60's influences being poured over a fun splash of acoustic folk. He joins Brent on today's Good Things Guy podcast.
Dave Scott, aka The Kiffness, can be best described as a South African meme and music culture tastemaker. From his roots remixing his school song, to taking on the SABC with his #NoPayNoPlay campaign, to creating a mashup that was incorporated into Fatboy Slim's set - Dave has never shied away from being quirky or controversial.
