Cohoes Mayor Bill Keeler is proposing to enact a Local Law that would tax the income received by Norlite LLC for its treatment and disposal of hazardous waste. The proposal will be discussed at the next scheduled Cohoes Common Council Workshop, December 8th. Norlite makes annual property, water, and sewer tax payments to the City of Cohoes. In addition, beginning in 2012, Norlite had paid a monthly voluntary contribution totaling $100,000 annually to the City of Cohoes, which went to the General Fund to support basic operations of the city. However, Norlite stopped making those payments in March 2020, having paid a total of $16,667 this year. The public can attend a workshop on Mayor Keeler’s proposal to tax Norlite’s hazardous waste revenue at a meeting of the Cohoes Common Council on Tuesday, December 8th at 7pm, at Cohoes City Hall. A separate public information session on Norlite cohosted by the City of Cohoes with the DEC will take place Wednesday, December 9th. For details and to submit questions, call (518) 357-2075. Nutrition and Cognitive Decline with Dr. Alex Richardson

Dr. Alex Richardson is an expert in nutrition and health and uses a multidisciplinary approach to epidemiology. In this podcast, she connects food health and physiology, explaining to listeners How the classic paradigm for research studies fails to take into account how our complicated physiology processes food and other factors, Why common medications for stomach acid may decrease our ability to prevent cognitive decline, and What comparing the differences between the British Victorian diet and habits with our modern lifestyle tells researchers about food health. Dr. Alex Richardson is the founding director of Food and Behavior (FAB) Research and is a Research Associate with the Department of Physiology, Anatomy, and Genetics at the University of Oxford. She has been a part of several seminal studies that involve connections between nutrition and brain health. In this podcast, she focuses specifically on the epidemiology of cognitive decline diseases and nutrition. She begins by describing the very limited approach historical studies have take thus far, commenting that the accepted model of research is incapable of taking into account how our body and nutrition work together. Specially, she identifies how the randomized double-blind placebo-controlled trials only handle one nutrient or medication at a time and tells listeners why this is so inadequate. She also entails several ways this study pattern has harmed our understanding of what medications can do and provides some recent findings of how proton pump inhibitors have a multi-pronged means of harming cognitive strength.  In addition, she describes studies that show what's actually good for us, enumerating a study on the British Victorian Era's lifestyle and diet and resulting health and lack of disease. She then moves into a discussion about the harm in our modern-day diet and talks about how harmful sugar is, the importance of B vitamins and in what form, fatty acids, and other healthful choices and why. Without long chain omega-3 fatty acids, the development of the brain and nervous system would be impossible. This begs the question: what effects arise from long chain omega-3 fatty acid deficiency? Dr. Alex Richardson joins the show to discuss the following: What has caused nutritional imbalances globally and particularly in those who consume a Western diet In what ways omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids differ How short chain fatty acids differ in important ways from long chain fatty acids What the data suggests about the use of long chain omega-3 fatty acids as antidepressants Dr. Alex Richardson is a research associate in the Department of Physiology, Anatomy, and Genetics at the University of Oxford, and founder of Food and Behavior (FAB) Research. Her interest in researching the role of nutrition in physical and mental health was triggered during her postdoctoral studies when she discovered how impactful long chain omega-3 fatty acids are on vision. Since then, she's been investigating how this essential nutrient may be related to conditions like ADHD, dyslexia, and disorders that fall on the autism spectrum.  Dr. Richardson published her first study about two decades ago, which demonstrated that omega-3 fatty acids could lower impulsivity, inattention, and hyperactivity in children with above average levels of these. Through a second study, she showed that omega-3 fatty significantly improved reading, spelling, and symptoms of ADHD in children.   Dr. Richardson already has protocols set for two more studies: one that will look at the effects of omega-3 on sleep, and how sleep may be associated with ADHD and autism, and a second that will look at the relationship between omega-3 and sleep health, and common mental health conditions like stress and depression. The BBC Micro - Interview with Steve Furber Hi, everyone, and welcome to episode 97 for February 2020 of the Floppy Days Podcast. This episode kicks off a series of episodes on one of the iconic British machines that was so important to the home computer revolution: The BBC Micro.  This machine has an amazing history and continues to have a very large following among vintage computer enthusiasts. What better way to start off this series than by beginning with an interview with someone who was right on the front lines in the development of the machine.  Those of you who aren’t familiar with Steve Furber will be much more familiar after listening to the interview that I was able to get with him for this show. Steve worked at Acorn Computers in the decade of the 1980’s where he was the principal designer of the BBC Micro and the ARM microprocessor.  I’m very honored to have been able to talk with Steve for about 50 minutes and am elated that I’m able to bring this interview to you this month. Next month, we’ll kick off some episodes to cover all of the usual topics on the Beeb (as it’s affectionately called), such as its history in depth, tech specs, modern upgrades, Web sites and a ton of other information about this machine. Before we jump into the interview, I’m a bit behind in letting you know about any new acquisitions I’ve managed to get for the hobby and any hobby-related things I’ve been working on, so I’ll try to do some catch-up there. Until Cam throws the deep ball, we're always going to doubt whether or not he can do it. They'll then discuss whether the cap room they just created last week would be better served re-signing James Bradberry, bringing back Shaq Thompson or extending Christian McCaffrey until he turns 90. Or, in a cruel twist of fate, would the Panthers just run him into the ground and then let him go? Of course, they'll preview the Bucs game and try to decide where the best destination for Jameis Winston might be after he inevitably leaves Tampa Bay. And then they'll play everyone's favorite game - eBay Fun Time! When it comes to successful online dating, the two things that seem to matter most are your screen name and your profile picture. I begin this episode by explaining what works best as determined by researchers who reviewed thousands of online profiles of people who were successful online daters and people who failed miserably. http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2015/02/150212212100.htmWhat determines your behavior? Is everything you do the result of your free will or is your behavior determined by something else? Could it be you are not responsible for your own actions? Robert Sapolsky, a professor of biology and neurology at Stanford University joins me to make the case that we are not responsible for what we do – that it is determined by all sorts of biological influences. What he says will either make you a believer – or make you crazy. Robert is the author of several books including the bestseller, Behave: The Biology of Humans at Our Best and Worst. https://amzn.to/2LWQRZRDo you know what you look like – really? Let’s Get Technical with Stacey Marien and Alayne Mundt On today’s episode we cover a number of topics. First off is Katina Strauch with her weekly Rumors segment. Then we hear from Katina’s husband Bruce Strauch as he tells us a fascinating “Case of Note” story involving reality TV, violent street gangs and the anti-SLAPP statute. We then hear three articles from ATG Column Editors Stacey Marien (Acquisitions Librarian, American University Library) and Alayne Mundt (Resource Description Librarian, American University Library) focusing on practical problems and solutions in Technical Services departments. This is the first of a series of articles that Stacey and Alayne will be presenting on the podcast. This week’s Katina’s Rumors: There are many people who help us to keep the Charleston Conference and ATG running! One of our main technical advisers is Matt Branton. Matt has worked at the College of Charleston for most of his young lifetime! He has two darling girls – Lockie and Tallulah and a wonderful wife Leighton. The family has recently welcomed a brother. Benjamin Luke Branton was born April 22 and is hard at work getting bigger! Matt helps us with every eventuality quickly and efficiently whenever we need him! Thank you, Matt and congratulations to the Branton family! We met many years ago in Fiesole, Italy, when she as working for Casalini Libri and later at Ithaka. And the vivacious Çolleen Campbell has a new position as Partner Development in the Open Access 2020 Initiative at the Max Planck Society’s Max Planck Digital Library. The Max Planck Digital Library (MPDL) in Munich is a central unit of the Max Planck Society that supports scientists from all Max Planck Institutes with a broad portfolio of services in the fields of information provision, publication support and research data management. In the era of digital information, big data, the World Wide Web and web-based collaboration, MPDL makes a substantial contribution to the Max Planck Society's competitiveness in the international science community. The MPDL and its predecessors have featured as one of Europe's largest purchasers of scientific information for more than 10 years now. The MPDL arranges for access to a wide range of scientific journals, eBooks, specialist databases and extensive open access publication services. Together with the libraries at the Max Planck Institutes, it takes care of an excellent supply of scientific information and opportunities for publication. Teams from the MPDL have been playing an active role in preparing and supplying research data and research results from the 80 Max Planck Institutes since 2007. The MPDL has been working for many years with both Max Planck Society born data collections and commercial resources, developing cyber-infrastructures and specialist applications for research data. It regularly combines data flows from more than a hundred different sources and performs ongoing analyses of usage statistics and constantly growing, complex data pools with entry volumes in the order of 1011 or more. https://www.mpg.de/mpdl-en https://www.mpdl.mpg.de/en/about-us/mission.html Kevin Davies has joined Mary Ann Liebert, Inc., publishers as Executive Vice President, Strategic Development. In this new role, Davies will oversee strategy development for the company’s life science franchise, including GEN (Genetic Engineering & Biotechnology News) and Clinical OMICS, as well as spearhead innovative new content initiatives for Mary Ann Liebert, Inc. Davies’s career as an editor, author, and publisher has spanned more than 25 years. He has held a number of prominent editorial and publishing positions, including founding editor of Nature Genetics, Editor-in-Chief of Cell Press, launch editor for Bio-IT World, and vice president of the American Chemical Society, where he served as publisher of Chemical & Engineering News. Davies is the author of three successful science books exploring the medical and societal impact of advances in DNA sequencing and analysis — Breakthrough: The Race to Find the Breast Cancer Gene; Cracking the Genome: The Race to Unlock Human DNA; and The $1,000 Genome: The Revolution in DNA Sequencing and the New Era of Personalized Medicine — as well as co-author with Nobel laureate Jim Watson of an updated edition of DNA: The Story of the Genetic Revolution. In April of this year, Davies won a prestigious Guggenheim Fellowship for science writing. “I am delighted to be joining the Mary Ann Liebert team,” said Davies. “I have long admired the company’s penchant for identifying emerging areas of science and medicine, and sought to emulate the longstanding success of Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology News. I hope my ideas and experience in launching new journals and managing various science and technology publications will help the Liebert organization grow and flourish in the years ahead.” http://www.alphagalileo.org/ViewItem.aspx?ItemId=175170&CultureCode=en Listen Online: “Libraries in The 21st Century” was Discussed on Florida Matters Public Radio Program. This was posted by Gary Price on InfoDocket. Herring Dean of Library Services, Winthrop University http://www.infodocket.com/2017/05/02/listen-online-libraries-in-the-21st-century-discussed-on-florida-matters-public-radio-program/ And to finish out Rumors this time, learn about a debate in British Parliament at Westminster. They are concerned over what to print legislation on. Since Medieval times, Parliament has recorded its acts on sheep and goat skins made into parchment, and since 1849 only on vellum which costs Parliament $45 on an A4-size sheet versus 16 pence for archival paper. There’s much discussion and passion about the merits of paper versus vellum. Traditionalists say that the Magna Carta was printed on vellum. Britain’s House of Lords switched to paper in 1999. Laws and resolutions of the US government were printed on parchment until 1920. It appears that paper has won the battle so far but anything could happen still as we all know. https://www.wsj.com/articles/britains-next-pressing-question-paper-or-parchment-1494179108

The Myth of the Press Gang: Volunteers, Impressment and the Naval Manpower Problem in the Late Eighteenth CenturyBy J. Ross DancyFrom the publisher: The press gang is generally regarded as the means by which the British navy solved the problem of recruiting enough seamen in the late eighteenth century. This book, however, based on extensive original research conducted primarily in a large number of ships' muster books, demonstrates that this view is false. It argues that, in fact, the overwhelming majority of seamen in the navy were there of their own free will. Taking a long view across the late eighteenth century but concentrating on the period of the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars of 1793-1815, the book provides great detail on the sort of men that were recruited and the means by which they were recruited, and includes a number of individuals' stories. It shows how manpower was a major concern for the Admiralty; how the Admiralty put in place a range of recruitment methods including the quota system; how it worried about depleting merchant shipping of sufficient sailors; and how, although most seamen were volunteers, the press gang was resorted to, especially during the initial mobilisation at the beginning of wars and to find certain kinds of particularly skilled seamen.http://www.boydellandbrewer.com/store/viewItem.asp?idProduct=14694
