Grab our High-Converting Proposal Template and learn what to include (and what to leave out) to turn more of your proposals into higher-paying clients. https://webdesigneracademy.com/template March 2026 Income Report: What a $22K Month Really Looked Like Shannon Mattern and Client Success Coordinator Erica Nash break down the March 2026 numbers honestly: $22,617.87 total inflow, a break-even month, and the real mindset work underneath it all. Revenue came from the Simply Profitable Designer Summit ticket sales ($9,371), Next Level Mastermind renewals, private coaching, and Web Designer Academy payment plans. Total outflow was approximately $21,583. The bigger story? March was also the month of the 10th annual Simply Profitable Designer Summit (20 speakers, conversion design theme), a new lead magnet launch, a new TikTok account, and the launch of the Pricing Mindset Makeover podcast. Shannon unpacks the pattern she falls into every summit season: expecting immediate Web Designer Academy enrollments from an event that's designed to plant seeds for months to come. She and Erica talk through getting neutral about your numbers, the difference between persistence and powering through, and why you cannot navigate business wobbles alone. The landscape of website builders has evolved so much since I got started in 2010 and you know what else has evolved? Web designers. Building high-converting, well-designed professional websites is still at the core of most web designer studios and agencies but the landscape is evolving now to where, in my experience, clients are relying on web designers to help make sense of the scattered online world and to help them drive traffic, leads and customers to their website. This means an identity shift for many web designers, who are now viewed as more of webmasters or web consultants/strategists. That's exactly what we dive into in this chat I had with Mark Szymanksi. This convo was recorded for his show Fueled by Progress but we covered so much important ground, I wanted you to hear it as well.Apart from the landscape of website builders changing, we get into:How web designer identities change as we progressWhere AI is in web design now in 2026The changes in the DIY marketMy identity shifts from designer, to course creator, to community builder and coachRunning an online business around family (as Mark is expecting his first kiddo soon)And more.Head to the show notes to get all links and resources we mentioned, along with a full transcription of this episode at joshhall.co/416

I've got some tough love for you today: it's 2025, and you can't afford to not have a website. Clients are vetting freelancers harder than ever, and your site is the first thing that tells them whether you're worth the investment. The goal isn't just to throw one together; it's to have a website that books clients. That's why I invited Brand & Web Designer, Alyssa Downey, to join me in this episode. We're walking you through the essentials of creating a website that isn't just pretty but strategic, accessible, and designed to convert. Alyssa even echoes exactly what Laura Jawad teaches for SEO in episode #259: search engines and clients need to clearly understand what you do before they'll take action. Creativity matters, but clarity comes first.Alyssa is the owner of Amp'd Designs®, helping businesses get noticed through bold, unforgettable Branding & Web Design that's deeply rooted in strategy and business goals (and looks stunning, too). With over a decade of design experience, a BFA in Communications Design from Pratt Institute, and a background as an NYC art director, Alyssa brings both the strategy and the artistry. She's also the founder of Make Your Design Matter®, where she empowers self-employed designers to grow thriving, confident businesses.Listen to learn more about:The number one most common website pitfall that's costing you conversionsWebsite accessibility essentials that make your site usable for all visitorsTwo or three quick design tweaks that instantly make your website look more professionalWhat to focus on if you're just starting and don't have a website yetThe must-have homepage elements that build trust and help you land better clientsIf you've been procrastinating on your website (or wondering why the one you have isn't booking clients), this episode is your wake-up call. Alyssa and I are giving you the practical steps to finally build a website that books clients. When I began my career in web design, my initial goal was to “get a job” as a web designer for an agency or corporation…until I realized corporate life is NOT for me.But that's me, I enjoy the world of risk and reward of freelancing and entrepreneurship, whereas the freelance lifestyle is NOT for everyone. So today I'm thrilled to share the conversation I had with Chris Webb, who's had a long career as a web designer and developer as an agency and corporate web designer. But Chris also does freelance on the side, so he has a unique perspective on the pros and cons of freelancer vs agency vs corporate web designers. What makes this convo extra special is that Chris has been a close personal friend of mine since early high school. I looked up to him big-time when I first got started in design because he was “the cool agency designer,” and he mentored me in many ways in those early days. So to be able to have him on the show now, 16 years later, is an awesome, full-circle moment for us both
Great to have Chris “the self-made web designer” back on the podcast!Aside from casual catch-up and web shop talk, we get into where the web industry is today compared to when we first entered the industry years ago.Chris has a unique perspective as a freelance web designer who got most of his work through Upwork, and, with his work with ShowIt, sees a different part of the market than what I often do with WordPress.Head to the show notes to get all links and resources we mentioned, along with a full transcription of this episode at joshhall.co/394
