Special episode and the lessons we can learn from the recent Modere Closing and the future of network marketing.Episode OverviewIn this episode, I dive deep into the recent shocking news of Modere shutdown without any prior notice, leaving thousands of distributors and the entire network marketing community shocked.I share not only the implications of the Modere shutdown but also the essential lessons that network marketers must learn to protect their futures and build resilient businesses.Modere: What Exactly Happened? On Friday, April 11th, 2025, Modere closed without any warning or notification.I was hanging out with my mom who was visiting from NYC when my friend Ian Farrar text me about it.I felt “sick to my stomach,” knowing friends and colleagues who had built significant incomes were suddenly left with no commissions and no clear path forward.Notable leaders like Justin Prince, Marina Simone, and others had previously left, signaling underlying issues.Still, the abrupt closure was entirely unexpectedly, making what happened to Modere even more devastating.Immediate Impact on Leaders and DistributorsI highlighted the stark reality faced by many top earners and everyday distributors in Modere:Incomes ranging from $1,000 per month to $100,000 per month vanished overnight.Unlike previous cases (such as Beachbody or Rodan + Fields shifting models), Modere provided no transition, leaving no “Plan B”.Final product orders were delivered, but beyond fulfilling refunds, everything else ceased abruptly. Is Network Marketing Still Worth It After Modere Shutdown?I addressed this question…Is residual income still viable in network marketing?I emphasize that:Any industry carries risk. Even large corporations like Kodak have vanished over time.I personally still earn network marketing residual incomefrom a business I built over two decades ago, proving that stability can exist but requires both skill and luck.I underscore that Modere's closing doesn't represent the entire industry—many companies continue to thrive.Lessons Learned From Modere1. Entrepreneurship Involves RiskEntrepreneurship, including network marketing, involves ups and downs. Companies may close, and markets fluctuate. I reassure listeners that risk is universal, not exclusive to network marketing.2. Network Marketing Residual Income Requires Smart ChoicesNetwork marketing residual income exists but requires choosing stable companies and products with lasting demand.I share insights from my own success, acknowledging the element of luck but also highlighting the importance of market research and strategic planning.3. Personal Development and GrowthThe true benefit of network marketing isn't solely financial but personal.I share my journey from being a shy, quiet Asian kid from Brooklyn, New York, to someone confidently impacting thousands through speaking and coaching.I describe network marketing as a “personal development university with a pay plan.”Why Personal Branding Yourself is EssentialI stress that the Modere shutdown underscores the critical importance of personal branding:Individuals overly associated with a single company risk losing their identity if the company fails.Leaders who built strong personal brands (such as Tony and Sarah Zolecki, John and Nadia Melton, Michelle Barnes) transitioned smoothly to new ventures due to their personal following.Building your personal brand through consistent value-driven content ensures your community follows you beyond any single company's fate.Characteristics of Network Marketing Companies That LastI draw from my 22 years of industry experience to highlight characteristics common to enduring network marketing companies:Avoiding Hype: Companies built on solid, valuable products rather than short-lived excitement tend to last.Steady Growth Over Rapid Expansion: Companies that grow steadily rather than explosively typically sustain longer.International Expansion: Successful, long-lasting companies eventually expand internationally, maintaining a fresh influx of ambitious leaders.Homegrown Leadership Development: Companies that develop new leaders internally, rather than recruiting high-profile leaders from other companies, achieve lasting growth and resilience.Protecting Your Future After Modere ClosingFocus on Core Business ActivitiesI advise listeners to concentrate on income-producing activities and avoid excessive distractions such as overly focusing on industry news or social media scrolling.Implementation Over InformationThe Modere closing illustrates the importance of action.Instead of just consuming information about industry events, I emphasize the need for practical implementation:Improve customer service and community-building.Offer intangible value (personal support, accountability, recognition) that competitors like Amazon can't replicate.Reinforce your unique value to customers to prevent loss to cheaper alternatives. The Importance of Investing and DiversifyingIn business there's always uncertainty. I emphasize financial responsibility:Invest network marketing income into diverse assets (stocks, real estate, health, family time).Diversify your financial portfolio to buffer against unexpected industry downturns. Why I Still Recommend Network MarketingDespite the Modere closing, I firmly believe in network marketing's value:Provides unmatched business education (selling, marketing, time management).Skills gained are highly transferable, beneficial for careers and businesses beyond network marketing.I passionately recommend network marketing to my children for these invaluable life and business skills.Final Thoughts: Resilience and GrowthI offer powerful encouragement for those affected by Modere's closure:Leaders who built successful businesses can rebuild and often become stronger through adversity.Challenging times amplify personal and leadership growth, setting up future success.Network marketing residual income remains possible but requires adaptability, personal branding, and strategic financial management.Implementation always beats information alone. Take action today, and go positively impact someone's life.

Episode 52. If you talk to "seasoned" human beings—meaning people who have lived at least 6 decades—they will all agree on one thing: to stay healthy and happy is to stay active. Once you stop working, moving, or dealing with life's daily challenges, you go downhill fast. Here's the thing: some of us need help staying active. We have gut issues. We have muscle issues. We have energy issues. We have sleep issues. We need help, and we need it to be easy. This is easy. This is my second podcast on 'easy' things you can do to turn around your health, but this one takes it a step further with a routine that hits on 4 core areas: superfood nutrition, detoxification, maintaining muscle mass, and sleep. In this episode, I interview Ian Farrar, and award-winning cyclist who competes with people several decades younger than himself—and wins. You would never guess he's 55, more like 40, and many mistake him for being in his 30s. "Grind while they sleep" "Don't stay in bed unless you can make money in bed" "Sleep when you're dead" How many of these memes, quotes or photos have you seen lately glorifying the almighty "Hustle"? I sure have. I've even shared a couple myself. You guys know I never set aside the importance of having to put in the work and sacrifice to achieve your intended success. Today's conversation however, gave me pause as it left me full of respect, humility and hope. Thing is, my next guest, Ian Farrar, had experienced the ups and downs of an incredible career in a way that very few people can truly understand. As a sales professional, entrepreneur and founder of Far North Ltd and Carpeway Ltd, Ian has over 20 years in global business development roles. With a strong, global network of influential contacts to call on, Ian has founded, scaled and exited companies in his native North East. Ian also has impressive experience holding non-executive directorships for public sector organizations. As a self-confessed Social Evangelist, Ian embraces relationships across many social platforms. Founding and hosting the UK’s top-ranking business podcast Industry Angel, saw Ian nominated for a 2016 European influencer award alongside juggernauts Gary Vaynerchuk and Tim Ferris. As an accomplished keynote speaker, Ian often shares his burn out experience that landed him pushing through business meetings with beta blockers and ultimately collapsing in the hospital. Ian subsequently fired himself from corporate life in 2015. With a calling to share his thoughts on culture and leadership, Ian speaks passionately about the need for leaders to protect their teams from workplace stress. In addition, Ian also explains his love of personal branding through content creation and calls for his audience to begin their own projects as "no one is coming to save you". This incredible conversation was a blessing in disguise. Ian's personal account was a welcome reminder that we have an inherent responsibility to take care of our mental health and that success, however that looks for you, should not come at the expense of your personal wellbeing. Anneka Hicks is the founder of ExcludedUK, a grassroots non-profit organisation committed to providing personal, business and career support to those facing hardship as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic. Anneka is an experienced marketer, strategist, and technologist with a deep routed passion for helping small businesses, independents, and entrepreneurs realise their growth potential and succeed in meeting and exceeding their goals. With an enthusiasm for business from a very young age – Anneka was often found selling colouring in pages for 5p to neighbours from the age of 5 - she left home at the age of 16 to pursue a life in who-knows-what, which at that stage involved living in a long boat on the Oxford Canal, fronting a Jazz quintet, studying Psychology and English Language, and selling carpet to make ends meet! Her love for helping small independent businesses grow and succeed was realised as a result of finding work at the local newspaper selling traditional advertising space. With a creative eye and an understanding of human psychology, she proceeded to teach herself graphic design, web building and coding skills which she then was able to use to help companies within her hometown promote their brands in print, online and on air. The Covid-19 pandemic has enabled Anneka to get back to her routes, and re-evaluate the direction of her career. Having identified a considerable amount of UK Taxpayers falling outside of the Government’s COVID-19 financial support schemes eligibility criteria and seeing the impact of that on their businesses, and careers, as well as their mental health, Anneka set out to put together a support platform that would enable them to find a way through the crisis, building a strong community of likeminded individuals who would be able to help and support each other whilst campaigning against the social injustices and discrimination they were facing. In May 2020, ExcludedUK was founded. Ian & Anneka discuss; Founding Excluded Uk Bringing the community together MPs getting involved Different campaign groups with similar goals The government ignoring the gaps in support Marching for ExcludedUk Over 3 million people have been cast aside Issues with Universal Credit People who’re excluded having no where to turn Providing counselling sessions The impact on mental health Ian Farrar wanted to create something special for the listeners, in honour of International Podcast Day & Industry Angel's 200th episode. Show notes http://industryangel.com/110-how-to-win-at-office-politics/ In any office there’s always a hierarchy of power plays in how to get things done. Corporate veteran, Davide Cervellin, discusses with Ian Farrar how to play the game in his new book ‘Office of Cards’: 1. The corporate environment is like an episode of Game of Thrones – despite all the rules and red-tape it can be unpredictable so make sure you’re prepared for every outcome 2. Networking is the key to success – personal connections help you get things done so build a network that can make you uniquely effective in your environment 3. Lose the whiners – if you choose to spend time with people who drag you down, they WILL drag you down. Seek people who think and act like you – be a radiator and not a drain 4. Play the Long Game – getting what you want or need from the business world takes planning, time and hard work. Make sure every move you make gets you one step closer to your goal, no matter how long it takes 5. Always have a positive attitude and stay cool – it instils calm and inspires loyalty. Anger and frustration lose you good friends, lead you to make mistakes and miss opportunities 6. Never argue – there is absolutely nothing to gain from making an enemy for the sake of winning an argument because that enemy could become a problem 7. Make no enemies – enemies kill ideas and careers. Even if you think that person is powerless you don’t want them as an enemy, to survive and thrive you need to make sure that you #makenoenemies 8. Make people feel valued and important – they’re far more likely to support you and respond to your suggestions 9. Learn how to listen to people – your attention should be on what they’re saying when they’re speaking, not your response. By listening to people and giving them a chance to speak you’re gathering information you can use to tailor your idea to tie in with what they’ve got in mind 10. Be prepared – when you need something from someone make it as easy as possible for them to give it to you by doing the research and thinking needed before you ask anything Davide Cervellin was nominated as one of the Top 100 Influential People in Data Driven Businesses in 2018. He now works for travel website Booking.com.

Episode 030 - Antonio García Martinez Chaos Monkeys: Inside the Silicon Valley Money Machine Imagine a chimpanzee rampaging through a datacenter powering everything from Google to Facebook. Infrastructure engineers use a software version of this “chaos monkey” to test online services’ robustness—their ability to survive random failure and correct mistakes before they actually occur. Tech entrepreneurs are society’s chaos monkeys, disruptors testing and transforming every aspect of our lives, from transportation (Uber) and lodging (AirBnB) to television (Netflix) and dating (Tinder). One of Silicon Valley’s most audacious chaos monkeys is Antonio García Martínez. After stints on Wall Street and as CEO of his own startup, García Martínez joined Facebook’s nascent advertising team, turning its users’ data into profit for COO Sheryl Sandberg and chairman and CEO Mark “Zuck” Zuckerberg. Forced out in the wake of an internal product war over the future of the company’s monetization strategy, García Martínez eventually landed at rival Twitter. He also fathered two children with a woman he barely knew, committed lewd acts and brewed illegal beer on the Facebook campus (accidentally flooding Zuckerberg’s desk), lived on a sailboat, raced sport cars on the 101, and enthusiastically pursued the life of an overpaid Silicon Valley wastrel. Now, this gleeful contrarian unravels the chaotic evolution of social media and online marketing and reveals how it is invading our lives and shaping our future. Weighing in on everything from startups and credit derivatives to Big Brother and data tracking, social media monetization and digital “privacy,” García Martínez shares his scathing observations and outrageous antics, taking us on a humorous, subversive tour of the fascinatingly insular tech industry. Chaos Monkeys lays bare the hijinks, trade secrets, and power plays of the visionaries, grunts, sociopaths, opportunists, accidental tourists, and money cowboys who are revolutionizing our world. The question is, will we survive? Geoffrey Moore is an author, speaker, and advisor who splits his consulting time between start-up companies in the Mohr Davidow portfolio and established high-tech enterprises, most recently including Salesforce, Microsoft, Intel, Box, Aruba, Cognizant, and Rackspace. Moore’s life’s work has focused on the market dynamics surrounding disruptive innovations. His first book, Crossing the Chasm, focuses on the challenges start-up companies face transitioning from early adopting to mainstream customers. It has sold more than a million copies, and its third edition has been revised such that the majority of its examples and case studies reference companies come to prominence from the past decade. Moore’s most recent work, Escape Velocity, addresses the challenge large enterprises face when they seek to add a new line of business to their established portfolio. It has been the basis of much of his recent consulting. Irish by heritage, Moore has yet to meet a microphone he didn’t like and gives between 50 and 80 speeches a year. One theme that has received a lot of attention recently is the transition in enterprise IT investment focus from Systems of Record to Systems of Engagement. This is driving the deployment of a new cloud infrastructure to complement the legacy client-server stack, creating massive markets for a next generation of tech industry leaders. Moore has a bachelors in American literature from Stanford University and a PhD in English literature from the University of Washington. After teaching English for four years at Olivet College, he came back to the Bay Area with his wife and family and began a career in high tech as a training specialist. Over time he transitioned first into sales and then into marketing, finally finding his niche in marketing consulting, working first at Regis McKenna Inc, then with the three firms he helped found: The Chasm Group, Chasm Institute, and TCG Advisors. Today he is chairman emeritus of all three.
