I would recommend podcasters to rob banks instead because gambling is immoral. Welcome back to the podcast and to our very important series on games titled after women's names that begin with the letter L. Today, we're talking about Lorelei and the Laser Eyes a puzzle game from Simogo, developer of games like Year Walk and Sayonara Wild Hearts. Taking the form of an enormous escape room, where solving number puzzles and unlocking doors is the name of the game, you progress through an ever growing list of goals to uncover the “truth” as it is quantified in the menu. The game has a few consistent motifs that pop up to anchor you into the narratives main themes and provide clues to the puzzles, and combined with a story that has real concrete answers you can figure out yourself with the information provided, it really meshes a mechanical satisfaction with a narrative one. In the same vein, the difficulty of the puzzles really lands in a spot that will likely be satisfying for most people, if a bit easy for people who are diehard fans of the genre. Mostly more simple than you would think at first glance, recognizing patterns and identifying a pool of answers to choose from will serve you better than raw enigmatology in this case. The game isn't perfect, a bit too long, and if you're not a fan of puzzle games generally this likely won't change your mind, but it's a stylish package put together by a developer that really knows how to nail a tone. We're going to be talking about the interconnectivity of puzzles, the stylish execution of a visual style and we determine that person we often most agree with is ourselves. Thank you for joining us again this week! Not know what this game was going into it may have not been the best idea from a scheduling perspective, and maybe had something to do with us thinking it was bit overlong, but in the end it was still a good time. Do you think our devotion to Simogo's games is unhealthy? Do you just agree and enjoy their output? Let us know in the comments or over on our Discord! Next time, we're actually interrupting the GTAWNTBWTLL theme as we enter October and will be talking about Crow Country, so we hope you'll stay tuned for that.

You'll get the perspectives of both puzzle-positive (Emily) and puzzle-averse (Kate) players, as we dig into the core question: did Simogo make this game TOO hard? The hosts get philosophical at the end as they dig into the messages and themes of the game's story. But the biggest mystery of all remains unanswered: what the heck was the tampon for?? Descansad, jugad y pasadlo bien!! Editor Sam works behind-the-scenes each week to make sure the podcast is the best that it can be, but this week he is center-stage and ready to talk about something near and dear to his heart: Sayonara Wild Hearts. Described as a "pop album video game," Sam takes us through a journey that is as beautiful visually as it is emotionally, and as challenging mentally as it is physically (must tap button fast!). Sam edits music into our conversations to really show how impactful something can be and how a stunning message about self empowerment and the journey through grief can be found in the most unexpected places. There is no place for me on the podcast of a starway, Welcome back to NOCLIP Pocket! Today, we’re talking about Sayonara Wild Hearts, the most recent game from Simogo, and it once again feels like nothing they’ve done before. Sayonara takes elements from infinite runners, rhythm games, shoot ‘em ups, and others to create a constantly changing, but smooth, play experience. The real stroke of genius here though is paring it with a dynamic electropop soundtrack that, if it speaks to you, will have you absolutely spellbound when combined with the abstract colorful visuals. It, at times, is an overwhelming sensory experience, but one that is extremely focused. If you can get over the short length, or you’re the type to chase high scores, this comes highly recommended. We’re going to talk about genre conventions in a game that’s hard to define, how music and visuals combine to bring about a flow state, and being accosted by magicians. Thank you for listening again this week! Going in not knowing much about this game is a real jarring experience, and I hope at least some of you got to have that. And speaking of not knowing much about a game, next time we’re going to be talking about Dujanah, which is a game it’s almost impossible to understand before playing. We hope you’ll join us then.

Next, Ricky goes wild for Sayanora Wild Hearts, the latest from indie developer Simogo and publisher Annapurna, the visionaries behind Year Walk and Device 6. In the main event, the gang reviews Link's Awakening for Switch which according to Patrick, doesn't quite reach the definitive summit. Do the rest of the boys agree with his review? Considering the original Game Boy game is Tim's favourite Zelda game, chances are they don't. Last but not least, the gang discusses the problems with shopping at GameStop and why they prefer to either buy digital copies of games or order games online. All this and more!

I don’t know any people who listen to podcasts, nor do I care to. Welcome back! On today’s episode of Pocket, we’re returning to phone games, and, in fact, returning to a mobile developer we’ve talked about before. Device 6 is a game by Simogo, who also developed Year Walk, which we discussed last Halloween, and between the two games prove that they get that using phone hardware in a unique way is key. This game, however, focuses on text almost exclusively. The game’s text tells the story and provides descriptions, but is also your map, the space you play in, and also forms the basis for interaction. There’s a lot of unique elements present here and the low-barrier to entry makes it worth trying out. We talk about the game’s use of its unique conceit to blend mystery and more spooky elements, the pros and cons of having to spin your phone all around, and whether we are, in fact, just brains in vats. Thanks for joining us again today, and we hope you give the game a shot, as it’s (ironically, given its name) really one of a kind. We’re going back to talking about short games that won’t necessarily fit in your pocket next week as we talk about Detention. Got to gear up for Halloween eventually, right?

Dark northern forests of ambiguous shadow and sinister presence. Ancient churchyards with secrets beneath searching feet. Inhuman beings of terrifying power made even more powerful during the spiritually potent winter season….these are all elements of the Swedish tradition of Arsgang (Oshgong), or the Year Walk, in which an individual completes a kind of divination journey through night-shrouded woodland. Through forest, field and churchyard the year walker journeys, hoping to gain insight into the future, to know their own fate as well as the fate of their village, to have some knowledge of those issues of life and death: war, crop-destroying weather or fire, disease, significant deaths. This episode is a tribute to the game 'Year Walk' created by Swedish developing company Simogo.

People tried to glimpse the future in the strangest ways. They locked themselves in dark rooms, not partaking in podcasts. Thank you for joining us as we begin our extra spooky Halloween month this year! Today we’re going to be talking about Year Walk, a Simogo developed horror-adventure game based on a Swedish folk tradition in which people would perform a ritual in an effort to see into the future. The way the act of Year Walking was adapted to this game, originally released only for iOS, maintains the inherently creepy nature of such practices, but also helps to incorporate other elements of folklore that purely add to the game’s iconography and atmosphere. However brief, Year Walk does a fantastic job of accomplishing its goals in tone and story making it an enjoyable, moody experience and one perfect to kickstart the season. We’re going to discuss puzzles, folklore and an anthropomorphic suit-wearing horse man. Thank you for joining us today (a very important day as it’s our third year anniversary!) and we’ll be back in two weeks with an episode on Night Trap. Stay spooky, everybody!

This week, we draw lots of parallels to somewhat-obscure post-postmodernist English literature in a discussion about DEViCE 6, a game by Swedish developer Simogo. Device 6 is an iOS-exclusive title heartily inspired by 1960s-era spy films, most notably "The Prisoner", and it plays as an interactive text adventure fiction combined with escape-the-room puzzles across 6 separate 'episodes'. The game plays with a mild illusion of choose your own adventure, but doesn't quite work out that way by the end. Our host this week, Nate, has a lot to say about the parallels between this game and ergodic literature (a form of literature that requires more out of the reader than basic text); Nate's most prominent example being Mark Z. Danielewski's seminal 2000 work House of Leaves, a book that attempts to answer the questions and fantasies of early media experts prophesizing about what the internet would do to the written word. That is to say, reading House of Leaves is crazy; its text is constantly in changing styles, with some passages being backwards, upside-down, laid out in spirals, or told through margin liners of someone else's inane notes and scraps, for the most part in immersion-constructing ways. And from this, there are some clear but toned-down inspirations in the 'interface' of Device 6, Nate thinks, and we'll talk a bit about that and why that book might interest you if you liked aspects of this game (and vice-versa), in addition to the J.J. Abrams contribution to the world of the ergodic. It isn't just about books this week though, as we ponder the puzzles in Device 6, their difficulty, the story of the 'game', the divide between reading and playing, and just how similar this is after all to Fullbright and Emotive Pixels both's classic Gone Home.

Following up on our previous discussion of Simogo's quirky iOS title, Device 6, this week we take a look at Simogo's other little game about exploration, Year Walk.   While the two games share an interest in how players are presented with and interact with virtual spaces, a commitment to to a unique aesthetic, and a quirky and unusual world marked by puzzles and riddles, the two games definitely do not so obviously resemble one another in other ways. Gone is the maze of textuality that defines Device 6. Instead, the player explores a barren Northern European landscape in an effort to perform a ritual ages old.   This week we discuss the similarities and differences between the two games as well as what makes Year Walk a particularly compelling game world to explore in its own right.

On this week's episode, Dave gets his JRPGame on in the form of more Ni No Kuni and Persona 4 Golden, Vick discovers her latent ability for racing games in Real Racing 3, Joel finds a use for horse armor in DLC Quest, and we all get creeped out by Swedish folklore in Simogo's masterpiece Year Walk. We also discuss the bygone age of Expansion Packs, the maturing of the DLC era, and hint at the advent of the In-App-Purchase dynasty. Along the way we point fingers at The Sims, Warcraft 2, World of Warcraft, Dragon Age, The Elder Scrolls: Oblivion, the Mass Effect games, Red Dead Redemption, Borderlands 2, the Professor Layton games, and Batman: Arkham City. Name drops abound in this segment. Then in the mailbag section we get carried away and end up only having time enough to answer one question about predictions for the next generation of consoles. Even more name dropping ensues: Steambox, Ouya, PS4, Xbox Durango, Wii U, and even the Barbie games get a mention. Whut. If you have anything to add to our discussion or if you'd like to hijack our train of thought, send us an email at hello@staringatscreens.org or tweet us at @StaringScreens and we'll do our best to lose focus for you.
