What better way to celebrate Women in Construction Week in the US than a podcast about my soon-to-be-released book, Building Women Leaders: A Blueprint for Women Thriving in Construction. I'm grateful to fellow author and friend Gabrielle Dolan for taking the time to interview me about the book on my Greatness podcast. It's been an honour to write this book and I look forward to kicking off my book speaking tour at the Associated General Contractors (AGC) conference in April.
I remember being subscribed to this email newsletter from a guy named Josh, all about email marketing (kind of meta)... Every single day, a new email from Josh would pop up in my inbox, and I'd open it right away. These emails were different, a bit weird even, but in the best way possible. Each one would start with something that felt totally random, a story about something Josh experienced. No mention of email marketing whatsoever. But every time I was hooked. I just had to know how the story ended. And then, bam, right at the end, with just two or three lines he'd tie it all back to email marketing in a way that just clicked. Those emails weren't just informative; they were actually enjoyable, to the point that I looked forward to them. Now being able to hold someone's attention like that always seemed like a magic superpower to me... but I learned that it's not. In this episode, Gabrielle Dolan, who's been teaching the craft of storytelling for over 20 years, reveals how you can grow your storytelling skills and use them to communicate your message in a way that stick and, most of all inspires action. And as service design professionals, we know that getting people to take action is critical for change but also very challenging. So whether you consider yourself a natural storyteller or not, this episode is packed with practical wisdom you won't want to miss. Josh, by the way, stopped sending his daily emails a while ago, but as you've noticed his lessons have stuck with me. Enjoy the episode and keep making a positive impact! Take care, ~ Marc --- [ 1. Have you ever told a story -- a brilliant story! -- and your audience just looked at you blankly? They just didn't get it. Or they couldn't relate: they couldn't put themselves into the story. Stories succeed when people put themselves in the picture. They're in the airplane seat. They're in the room you're describing. They can feel the problem: their chest gets tight, their stomach hurts...it's real. But here's the catch. It doesn't have to be a personal story. In fact, you can tell a personal story that leaves everyone cold. In this video, I talk about 4 kinds of stories: personal and not relatable, relatable but not personal, not relatable and not personal...and last but not least: stories that are personal *and* relatable. There's one archetype that gets away with stories that are neither personal nor relatable. And there's another archetype that tells personable, relatable stories. So before telling a story, ask yourself: Will my audience put themselves in this story? If they can't see themselves in the picture, your story will fail. And if they can put themselves in the picture, you've got a winner, whether the story's personal or not. Come listen here. And if you like the episode, don't forget to leave a rating and a review, especially on Apple or Spotify. While working in senior leadership roles in corporate Australia, Gabrielle realised the power of storytelling in effective business communication. She is a highly sought after keynote speaker, educator and author of ‘Real Communication', ‘Stories For Work' and her latest book, ‘Magnetic Stories'. In this episode, she challenges corporate norms that facts and figures are primarily what matters, and instead describes the influential power of storytelling, both internally with your team and externally with the consumer. She helps us differentiate sucky stories from sticky stories, discusses how emotional impact of story precedes logic in consumer decisions and demonstrates how, when told well, our ordinary human stories can truly be extraordinary. On this episode, Vanessa Kelly speaks with Gabrielle Dolan of Gabrielle Dolan Consulting, based in Melbourne Australia. Gabrielle has written 7 books on leadership, the most recent of which is, “Magnetic Stories: Connect with customers and engage employees with brand storytelling.” Gabrielle shares the science behind storytelling and how storytelling in a business setting, if done right, can be one of the most effective methods of communication. The story must relate to the business message and be authentic. When done correctly, storytelling taps into the listener's emotions and helps listeners to better retain the information being contained. As a leadership trainer, Gabrielle helps business leaders connect more authentically with their stakeholders, boards, employees, customers, business partners, and the like. As humans, we are all storytellers to a degree; listen in to this episode to learn more about using storytelling to communicate and create lasting impressions.

In this episode of Masters of Community, we speak with Gabrielle Dolan, Founder of Jargon Free Fridays and Speaker and Author at Gabrielle Dolan Consulting. Gabrielle realized the power of storytelling toward the end of her corporate career. This motivated her to learn about storytelling and led her to grow her skills into a full-fledged coaching business. After leaving her job at the National Australia Bank, she went into communication coaching for corporations, where she helped them use storytelling to communicate effectively with employees and customers. Seventeen years later, she's a highly sought-after storytelling coach and keynote speaker. This podcast is full of stories and anecdotes about how powerful stories can be. Gabrielle draws from her wealth of experience to share tips and strategies that businesses can use to tell their own stories. These stories are generally a branding activity, but they do need to be told well. So, Gabrielle also shares some simple tips to structure your stories for maximum impact. Who is this episode for? Community managers for brand-new communities or business owners who want to build a community with a soul. Three key takeaways: 1. Storytelling for Community Building: Corporates can use stories to increase membership numbers and generate excitement among members so they engage naturally and frequently in their community (onboarding). Ongoing stories can be rooted in the values and behavior of your company and are also the social glue that keeps propagating outside your community. They keep your brand relevant among the larger cohort of your business partners, employees, customers, and well-wishers. 2. Storytelling to Communicate Values of Your Community: Instead of listing DOs and DON'Ts as rules of your community, try communicating them through stories. Stories are a fun way to learn, they add more context, and they also enable easier retention of those messages. Get major stakeholders on video telling stories to share the values of your organization and your community. This is a great way to realize the superpowers of storytelling for your community. 3. Roadblocks to Unlocking the Power of Storytelling: Most people who say they don't have a story to tell are underselling themselves because they think of “the hero's journey” as the only type of story that would interest somebody. A good way to break this mindset is to realize that you are not writing a Hollywood blockbuster and that you can let go of this weird “performance anxiety”. Start by defining the message/value/behavior that you want to communicate with the story you want to tell, and then spend enough time finding high-quality stories from your core group. Keep your stories specific and succinct, so you grab your audience's attention and maintain it throughout the length of the story. Notable Quotes: 1. “You probably don't need storytelling if every time you communicate people understand what you're saying and can remember it. So if you're doing that really well, then you probably don't need it. And they go, oh, well, you know, that's not always the case. And then I go, if you can influence people all the time, where you get people on board whether it's buying your stuff or buying into an idea and they're fully engaged in it, then you probably don't need storytelling either.” 2. “The real power of the story is they will be able to retell the story, which means really good stories can have this ripple effect. So it's not only you just recruiting - for want of a better word - people into your community. It's actually your members that can share the stories and recruit people into your communities.” 3. “The story explains the “why” and if you're not explaining the “why,” then it's not really making an impact” 4. “Whether it's a company or a community, everyone has a story, and it comes back to why did they start? Like if you just fundamentally ask someone to say, why does this community exist? Why does this company exist? You'll find a story. You'll find someone passionate about something. You'll find someone solving a problem around.” Answers to rapid-fire questions: 1. If you could only eat one food for the rest of your life, what would it be? Vegemite toast. 2. What's your favorite book to give as a gift to others or to recommend to others? “The Cheetah That Cannot Run” - a book Gabrielle's daughter wrote and illustrated at the age of fourteen as a school project. 3. What's a great conversation starter that you like to use in groups or in communities? Asking people “What's your superpower?” 4. Have you ever worn socks with Sandals? No. 5. What's the weirdest community you've ever been a part of? Thought Leaders' Business School - what's weird in a good way about this community is that everyone openly talks about money and what they're working on in a supportive, non-competitive way. 6. One Tweet-sized piece of advice for the rest of the world on how to live? “Be yourself. Everybody else is taken”. It's a quote from Oscar Wilde.

Considering the world's brief history of writing technology, it's easy to believe that most of the world's knowledge has been obtained through stories.Stories have served as documentation, education, and persuasion. Today, you can't go to a marketing event without someone teaching the art of storytelling. Why? Because humans love stories - we just don't all know how to communicate through stories. And even more so, we don't realize how, as business people, stories can be used to effectively communicate and move people to action. My guest this episode is a global thought leader on authentic leadership and business storytelling. She has worked with some pretty amazing organizations such as The Obama Foundation, Ernst and Young, Visa, Amazon, National Australia Bank, and Uber just to name a few.She is also an author of 7 books and her latest, Magnetic Stories debuted at number two on Australia's business books list.To share insights on Storytelling for Business, I'm happy to welcome to the podcast, Gabrielle Dolan.Conversation points: Gabrielle, I have to admit that as a Marketer - I've heard many people attempt to drive home the idea of Storytelling. But the reality is that there is no doubt that business people need to understand how to tell stories more effectively. Why is it so important for a business person to understand storytelling? I want to get your take on storytelling by bringing some insights for both Sales professionals and Marketing professionals - separately. For a Sales professional - can you give an example of how a salesperson can use Storytelling to do their job? And for Marketers - beyond the cliches, they are telling a brand story. What can an individual marketer do to utilize storytelling in their job? Brand StorytellingWhen a person hears “Brand Storytelling” - they may first think of “what is the origin story” of the brand. But I'm guessing it is much more than that. Please give us some insight, even a definition, of Brand Storytelling Can you give us a few practical bullet points to consider when seeking to begin Brand Storytelling? What about using storytelling within a company to help a leader be more effective? Personal Branding and StorytellingI'm preparing for a new keynote in a few weeks. The entire keynote originated from an actual series of events in my life. I look at the keynote as more of a Storytime with value. I expect that the story I share with this audience will become a pillar of my personal brand. Can you give some advice to our listeners on how to tie personal stories to help them in business? Can you tell me a story? I want to see a business story in action. Thanks to the listeners. If you're listening to the podcast and want to also “see” Gabrielle and I, - video of this podcast and OTHERS are available in the podcast section of ContentMonsta.com.This podcast is produced by Content Monsta - A leading producer of B2B Content.

< 34.16 > TALKING POINTS Gabrielle Dolan spent 17 years working for National Australia Bank in a senior leadership role in change management and project management. She experienced firsthand the challenges of communicating. 'As a leader, you think you've communicated, but then people aren't getting the message,' Gabrielle says. Gabrielle noticed that when she shared a story to communicate a message, people not only understood the message, but more importantly, they better remembered the message. And then she noticed good leaders were sharing stories. At 3-day conferences with speaker after speaker, the brilliant ones were brilliant because of stories. We need all the facts and figures and data, but it's stories that create emotional connection. People make decisions based on emotion, but they then search for evidence to support that emotional decision. Types of stories: Origin stories e.g. the origin of Mattel's Barbie doll, Creation stories, how the company started or how the product started. A company doesn't want to lose their corporate memory of stories. We can teach people the value of storytelling, educating so they share stories more effectively but also find stories from the past that we can use to inspire the future e.g. show the vision or the values and the behaviors of what we try to live by as a company. A manager can pose a question such as, tell me a time when one of you did something for a customer that made a difference to them, or tell me about a time when you felt really proud to work for this organization. I might bring 20 people together, some from the front line, senior people, junior people and ask them questions. Someone will tell a story and then someone goes, ‘Oh yeah, that reminds me of . . .' In 2 hours you could probably hear 50 stories; five or 10 are absolute gold. And at the end people go, ‘I just feel so proud to work here.'
