Grandparents are both our past and our future. In some ways, they are what has gone before, and in others, they are what we will become. —Fred Rogers Hosts Julia and Keerthi talk about the superpowers of grandparents. They possess the unique ability to turn every mundane event into an epic adventure. Each one is a treasure trove of adventure, mystery, and, quite often, questionable fashion choices from their youth. They've seen it all—wars, moon landings, and the evolution of the telephone from rotary to touch. Keerthi's grandparents are Indian and don't speak English, so they couldn't be on the show today. But Keerthi shares how much she loves hanging out with them on their coconut farm when she visits India. One set of her grandparents is from the same village where Kamala Harris' mom grew up! Julia introduces us to her two amazing and accomplished grandpas. Yukon joined Julia and Keerthi for a lively discussion about how he came to America from China and became a renowned economist, not seeing China again until he became the World Bank's country director for China with an office in Beijing. His stories and advice will have listeners craving more. Unfortunately, Julia's grandfather on her dad's side was unable to come on the program but she interviewed him about his life earlier. Jonathan Howe is a retired four-star United States Navy admiral, who worked at the White House with Henry Kissinger and President Nixon. He was the Special Representative for Somalia to United Nations Secretary-General Boutros Boutros-Ghali. He met his future wife at age 13 and the rest is history. Both grandpas have Wikipedia pages. On this episode of Protestia Tonight for August 22, 2023, David discusses the phenomenon that is Oliver Anthony's "Rich Men North of Richmond" from a polemical perspective. In the PT VIP, we discuss the dumpster fire that is Jonathan Howe being appointed new SBC Executive Committee interim president.
The SBC Executive Committee announced that Willie McLaurin resigned from the interim president position after it was discovered that he had falsified his educational credentials and accomplishments. VP for Communications, Jonathan Howe, has been named the new interim president.
On today's program, Virginia megachurch pastor John Blanchard had sexual solicitation charges against him dropped, but protesters are showing up at his church and even the town's police chief thinks the case was mishandled. We'll have details. Also on today's program, Open Doors releases its annual Watch List, which tracks persecution of Christians around the world. This year's conclusions are bleak. We'll explain why. We begin today with a lawsuit involving Bryan College that has been dragging on for more than five years. In Closing: I mention fairly constantly here at MinistryWatch the importance of the Form 990. We use them every day here at MinsitryWatch, and we encourage donors to look at them before they give to a ministry. In the past we've done a webinar entitled “How To Find and Read A Form 990.” This webinar has proven so popular that we've repeated it three or four times over the past two years. And we're going to do it again. It will take place on Feb. 1 at 4 pm ET. Just check the daily MinistryWatch email for a link to the registration page. It's absolutely free, but you do need to register to get all the links and details. Don't forget to rate and leave a comment on your podcast app. Not only do these comments help us know what you're thinking so we can make improvements, but the more ratings and comments we have, your ratings help other people find us. That's a huge help to us, and it helps us expand our reach. The producers for today's program are Rich Roszel and Jeff McIntosh. We get database and other technical support from Stephen DuBarry, Emily Kern, Rod Pitzer, and Casey Sudduth. Writers who contributed to today's program include Jessica Eturralde, Anne Stych, Kim Roberts, Cheryl Mann Bacon, Emily McFarlan Miller, Dale Chamberlain, Adelle M. Banks, Jonathan Howe, Christina Darnell, and Rod Pitzer. A special thanks to The Christian Chronicle and ChurchLeaders.com for contributing material for this week's podcast. Until next time, may God bless you.

“Seeing the way that people make this [TNR] their priority, make doing something good for their community a priority, was really inspiring.” This episode is sponsored in part by Humane Network, Buzz to the Rescues, and Maddie's Fund. Stacy speaks to Jonathan Howe, who is a public defender in Bronx County Family Court and has declared his candidacy for Congress in New York's 14th Congressional District. Jonathan and his wife were trained and certified in TNR during the COVID lockdown and now manage a small colony in Astoria, Queens. The couple shares their home with two of their own cats, Clara and Art Bell, and have helped two other kittens from the colony find new homes. Jonathan recounts his story of never having had a cat of his own but first seeing a lot of hungry outdoor cats at a friend's house about eight years ago. Fast forward to the COVID lockdown and Jonathan noticed the outdoor cats in his neighborhood and realized he needed to take responsibility for them. His early efforts at trapping were somewhat unsuccessful but he eventually trapped and fostered his first kitten. He got tips and advice from Neighborhood Cats and Astoria Cat Rescue on how to manage the colony, feeding, and trapping and attempted to get the colony cats spayed and neutered, even though some vet clinics were not open during COVID. Jonathan and Stacy briefly discuss the shortage of vet appointments and the decision that was made to determine that some vet clinics were considered non-essential services during the COVID shutdown. With the help of a court clerk Jonathan happened to speak to in a virtual meeting, he was able to get some colony cats fixed at an open clinic in Westchester, NY, and then pursued TNR certification. Jonathan encourages anyone interested in this work to get certified first before trying to learn the hard way. He tells Stacy, “Anyone who heard about what we were doing was eager to help”, including members of the community who dropped off supplies to feed and house the colony cats. Jonathan would like to see support for TNR at the Federal level and believes local government can also help by “giving vouchers for spay/neuter to local vets.” He thinks that anything that can be done on a legislative front to “make it clear that this [TNR] is a policy that works and is a policy that works to address a problem that we as humans have caused” will help to show that managing outdoor cats can be done in a humane way. Managing the colony and connecting with his neighbors through his work has made him feel “part of the community” and at the end of the process, he knew everyone in the neighborhood. He is currently fundraising for his campaign and is hoping, for every one hundred dollars he raises, to be able to put out one winter cat shelter he purchased from a company in Long Island, for the colony to use in the winter months ahead. The Winter Olympics in Beijing are here, and many countries including the United States have instituted a diplomatic boycott for the games -- the athletes will still go but the high level politicians and diplomats won't in protest of China's human rights abuses. China is a country with no free press. Dissent is cracked down upon, and that could create problems for athletes from the US and other countries that try to speak up and or take political stances. We wanted to talk about the pitfalls of this situation and what it could mean so we caught up Dr. Jonathan Howe and Dr. Elizabeth Taylor, assistant professors at Temple University's School of Sport, Tourism, and Hospitality Management. On this installment of the Demystifying Diversity Podcast, Daralyse Lyons and Zack James explore the themes and takeaways from the three-episode Black Voices series. Joined by Temple University's Dr. Jonathan Howe, this Q&A episode is a powerful discussion of dynamics of power and of pain. In this interview, Dr. Howe expounds upon the lessons learned in the Black Voices series, and also speaks directly to how the Black community continues to be impacted by the ongoing amplification of whiteness. The conversation touches on the series' central focus of facing pain as a means of embracing identity and cultivating joy. In this episode, you will learn about: The role that pain has in shaping the experience of both a person and a group of people as a whole, and how the willingness to face that pain can make the difference in overcoming it. The importance of storytelling, in cultivating individual and shared identity, as well as in eliminating erasure. The power that love holds in transcending barriers and differences in creating unity, equity and belonging. The role that sports can play in creating social change, and why they can't be solely relied upon to do so. The harmful effects of lowered expectations on the Black community, and their far-reaching effects. More on our guest this episode: Dr. Jonathan Howe - Dr. Howe's research centers broadly on the intersection of race, sport, and education. Within these intersections, Dr. Howe focuses on Black male college athletes, as well as Black coaches and athletic administrators. His research with Black male college athletes centers on race along with identity development, and self-presentation. Related to Black athletic coaches and administrators, Dr. Howe examines their racialized experiences as they operate in predominantly historically white spaces. Dr. Howe has presented his work at national and international conferences and his work has been published in numerous academic journals. Dr. Howe earned his PhD in Educational Studies with a focus on Higher Education and Student Affairs from the Ohio State University. He obtained his Master's of Science degree in Sports Management and Bachelor's of Science degree from the University of Texas at Austin. He currently teaches and conducts research from Temple University in Philadelphia, PA. Click here for a full transcript of this episode.

Jonathan Howe discusses the latest legal issues facing meeting planners. Can meeting planners require attendees to be vaccinated? And what privacy issues does this raise? These are among the thorny questions that meeting professionals have to consider as they plan safe in-person events. Jonathan Howe, president and founding partner of Howe & Hutton Ltd., and the leading legal mind on meetings law, recently shared his insights as part of Northstar Meetings Group’s webcast, “Ask the Attorney: New Legal Issues for Event Planners and Suppliers.” On this week’s episode of Eventful: The Podcast for Meeting Professionals, we share an excerpt of that conversation, moderated by Sarah Braley, managing editor for Northstar Meetings Group. Howe tackled a wide range of questions from the audience, and in this episode he also discusses liability protection for event hosts and venues (7:20), how cancellation clauses differ for hybrid events (11:23) and whether planners can put language into their contract that will ensure a full refund in the case of another pandemic (14:08). Listen now, and to view the full, hour-long webcast now, go to northstarmeetingsgroup.com/LegalWebcast. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Legal expert Jonathan Howe on the latest legal risks for meeting professionals. The COVID-19 pandemic has created plenty of legal issues for the events industry, from grappling with force majeure clauses to negotiating attrition terms that make sense. As face-to-face events slowly begin to resume in some form, one question continues to pop up: Can planners be held liable if an attendee contracts COVID at their event? It’s a tricky matter, and one that was recently addressed by Jonathan Howe, founding partner of Chicago's Howe & Hutton law firm and Northstar Meetings Group's longtime legal expert. Howe spoke with Loren Edelstein, vice president and content director for Northstar Meetings Group, during Interact Independent Planners, the latest in Northstar’s new series of half-day digital meetings for planners and suppliers. He discussed liability and contract issues and answered questions from the attendees who joined the event. On this episode of Eventful: The Podcast for Meeting Professionals, we are featuring excerpts from that conversation. See omnystudio.com/policies/listener for privacy information.

5 Leadership Questions Podcast on Church Leadership with Todd Adkins
In this episode of the 5 Leadership Questions podcast, Todd Adkins and Daniel Im are joined by Thom Rainer and Jonathan Howe, cohosts of the Rainer on Leadership Podcast. During their conversation, they discuss church revitalization and succession plans. BEST QUOTES “They decided they were going to go into their community with the gospel, not just with a social ministry." "I'm a better churchman, husband, and father because of him." "We have a constant feedback loop. That feedback loop often leads me to what I am going to read next." "We have a better idea of what is going on in the local church as a result of that feedback loop." "I think we are 5 to 10 years away from a crisis of youth ministry." "We want to be able to have any church at any point be able to get some type of revitalization help and resource." "The idea is for those churches that have resources to come together in a collective spot to resource other churches. It becomes a network of churches helping churches." "The best rhythm I've got for learning in leadership is through the constant input of others through podcasts and audiobooks." "If you spend 30 minutes in one chapter of the New Testament you begin to see things you have not seen." "Now you've got these big churches that need leaders that are capable of leading big organizations." "Use the legacy of the church to help you shape the future of the church." "Think outside the box when you start looking for your next pastor." RECOMMENDED RESOURCES LifeWay Leadership Podcast Network Rainer on Leadership Podcast Scrappy Church by Thom S.
