The Herle Burly was created by Air Quotes Media with support from our presenting sponsor TELUS, as well as CN Rail, Forestry for a Better Future, and Fidelity.Alright, you intrepid Herle Burly-ites. Regular listeners will know we've been talking about cost of living and affordability issues here on the pod the last little while.Well, mere hours before this recording … the federal Liberal government announced a new affordability package with a 1.6 billion dollar temporary GST cut, aimed primarily at families, plus a Working Canadians Rebate of $250. Does it help a little? A lot? Is it good policy? And speaking of brand-new economic context, what's changes will we be seeing down south because of the Trump election. How are they going to affect Canada?I want to dive into all of that with 2 of the smartest economic thinkers I know. Both, multi-time Herle Burly guests: Armine Yalnizyan and Jim Stanford.According to Maclean's Magazine, Armine is the “Caring Person's economist”. A big picture thinker who looks out for the little guy. And, the coiner of the term “She-cession”, way back in March 2020, to describe the economic fallout of the pandemic. She's currently the Atkinson Fellow on the Future of Workers with a mission to bring a workers' perspective to public policy development. Her work focuses on the care economy and the “social and economic factors that determine our health and well-being.Jim is the founding Director for The Centre for Future Work, a progressive think tank studying how work is changing in the modern economy. He's one of this country's best known economic commentators, quoted frequently in print and broadcast media, as well as the author of a regular column in the Toronto Star. For over 20 years, he served as Economist and Director of Policy with Unifor, Canada's largest private-sector trade union.Thank you for joining us on #TheHerleBurly podcast. “A journey is best measured in friends rather than miles.” – Tim Cahill Returning just hours before the broadcast from a phenomenal choral tour of South Africa, jet-lagged and seasoned teen host, Julia, enthusiastically talks about the new friends she made on her journey and welcomes three other teen reporters to discuss the joys of international travel. Two reporters, Diya and Armine, are making their debut segments. Diya shares the suspense she experienced in the cenotes of Mexico, Mayan ruins, and the awe of visiting the Taj Mahal. Armine encourages eco-traveling with simple tips on how to explore the world while keeping the health of the planet in mind. Hasini, another new reporter, reflects on last summer's two-month internship at a hospital in Hyderabad in South India where she worked in a laboratory and enjoyed eating street food. She also waxed poetic about the history and magnificence of the Taj Mahal. Despite the challenges and exhaustion of flying, all the teens agree that traveling to a foreign land offers cultural awareness with distinctive perspectives. Making friends and bringing back memories tops the list of bonuses. Do your research, pack your bags, and get ready to fly. Remember wherever you travel, leave only footprints, and take only memories.

When it comes to body weight, most of us are focused on one thing: losing it! But many people aren't prepared for what happens after weight loss. Any thoughts we may have about post-weight loss life are pretty dreamy. We imagine we'll feel uber confident, accomplished, and ready to boldly move forward in life. But all too often, that simply isn't the case. For many, the striving and struggle for weight loss ends up getting replaced by an equally unwelcome visitor: WEIGHT WORRY. That can look like constant fear that we'll gain the weight back, or nagging anxieties that we really should lose another few pounds. Our food worries continue, and the voices in our head never stop criticizing. We judge our body, we shame ourselves for having body fat, and we belittle ourselves for not having absolute control over food. While weight worry might fit into that box called a “1st world problem” – it can nevertheless be pretty debilitating. So what do we do when losing weight doesn't stop us from worrying about weight? Tune into this episode to find the answer. You'll hear from guest coaching client, Armine, 51, who has dieted for most of her life – and recently lost weight after a gastric sleeve operation. Armine thought she'd feel happier, but instead is often consumed by intense anxiety that she'll gain the weight back. How can Armine shift into a new relationship with her body, where she's not constantly worrying and fretting about her weight? As Marc David helps Armine see, it's a question of how she finds peace with herself and her body. Through a powerful new approach focused on personal growth, embodiment, and self-compassion, Armine discovers how to reframe her lifelong struggles with weight – and forge a beautiful new path forward. Some of the key episode highlights include: ✅ How to send the body the unmistakable message that it's a safe and welcome place, and why that matters when it comes to weight worry. ✅ Using a favorite form of “embodiment” to quiet the mind. ✅ Let go of perfection through the power of the Queen archetype. ✅ A key breathing technique to shift energy out of the mind and into the body. This fascinating session demonstrates that weight loss by itself doesn't guarantee inner peace and happiness. Freeing ourselves from weight worry ultimately comes down to living in joy – which is a daily practice we devote ourselves to, no matter how we look or what we weigh. --------------- Learn more about us at The Institute for the Psychology of Eating: https://psychologyofeating.com/ Ready to call a ceasefire in your battle with eating, and find peace and freedom with food? This event was the launch of the paper 'A New Diaspora of Saudi Exiles: Challenging Repression from Abroad' by Professor Madawi Al-Rasheed published under the LSE Middle East Centre Paper Series. Since the rise of Saudi Crown Prince Muhammad bin Salman in 2017, a new wave of exodus began, that has pushed feminists, young students, secularists, Islamists and others to flee the country in search of safe havens in the US, Europe, Canada and Australia. Based on ethnographic research, this paper traces the diversity of the young cohort of exiles who are currently seeking to counter domestic repression from abroad. Although Saudi Arabia has generated waves of exiles throughout its modern history, Al-Rasheed argues this recent diaspora is different in its diversity, demographic profile and aspirations. Madawi Al-Rasheed is Visiting Professor at the LSE Middle East Centre and a Fellow of the British Academy. Since joining the Centre, she has been conducting research on mutations among Saudi Islamists after the 2011 Arab uprisings. This research focuses on the new reinterpretations of Islamic texts prevalent among a small minority of Saudi reformers and the activism in the pursuit of democratic governance and civil society. Her latest books are 'Salman's Legacy: The Dilemmas of a New Era' (London: Hurst/OUP, 2018) and 'The Son King: Reform and Repression in Saudi Arabia' (London: Hurst/OUP, 2020). Armine Ishkanian is Professor of Social Policy and the Executive Director of the Atlantic Fellows for Social and Economic Equity programme at the International Inequalities Institute, LSE. Armine's research examines the relationship between civil society, democracy, development, and social transformation. She has examined how civil society organisations and social movements engage in policy processes and transformative politics in a number of countries including Armenia, Egypt, Greece, Russia, Turkey, and the UK.

Hello Rational Wellness podcasters. Today, we will be speaking about leaky gut with Dr. Jess Armine. Leaky gut is a controversial concept in the functional medicine world. No, I'm not talking about the controversy in conventional medicine about whether leaky gut exists at all. Most of us understand that there's tons of research substantiating that leaky gut exists and that it's a problem, but there are differences about how to test for leaky gut. There's the old lactulose mannitol intestinal permeability test, but most of us today are either using a serum test for zonulin or a stool zonulin test, or a serum test for zonulin antibodies, and there's a lot of controversy whether any of these are accurate. I personally run a stool zonulin as part of a stool test, but quite frankly, I assume that most of my patients with gut problems have leaky gut. There's also controversy about the best strategies for healing leaky gut and whether probiotics, and which ones, prebiotics, which ones, bone broth, et cetera, et cetera. How should we heal leaky gut? I'm hoping that Dr. Jess Armine can give us some clarification and guidance for how to understand leaky gut and how to treat it. Dr. Jess Armine is a doctor of chiropractic. He graduated in 1986, a year before me, and a registered nurse. He has specialized training in methylation, genetic research, neuro-endo immunology, functional medicine, nutrigenomics applied kinesiology and nutrition. He specializes in diagnosing and treating complex illnesses. Dr. Jess lectures worldwide and continues to treat patients mostly remotely. He co-authored a book with Elizma Lambert, ND entitled, Leaky Gut, Leaky Cells, Leaky Brain. Jess Armine, thank you so much for joining us. Dr. Armine: Thank you for inviting me. Basically all that stuff means I don't know what I want to be when I grow up. Dr. Weitz: Me too. Personally, I hope I never grow up. Dr. Armine: No. I'll tell you something. I have multiple, multiple interests, and like you said,

Henrietta Temple by Benjamin Disraeli audiobook. The Armine family, in particular the young Ferdinand Armine, is in great financial difficulties. Ferdinand's grandfather has burdened the family estate with large debts, which his father did not manage to diminish. Ferdinand himself is not disposed to live with his small income alone, and during his time in Malta with his regiment, he incurs debts of his own. The only thing that can easily pay for his debts and restore the house of Armine now is for Ferdinand to marry well, and the chosen wife for him is his cousin Katherine, the heiress to their grandfather's wealth. Katharine, who has idolized her cousin like their grandfather did, immediately consents to the marriage. But for Ferdinand, the match is a matter of necessity, not of love. Just as Ferdinand is beginning to realize that this planned marriage will be a loveless one for him, a chance meeting with the beautiful Henrietta Temple changes everything. "There is no love but love at first sight", and this young lady proceeds to turn Ferdinand's world upside down. Henrietta Temple is a semi-autobiographical novel and the author's first true success. Benjamin Disraeli, Earl of Beaconsfield and later British Prime Minister, based this novel on his affair with the married Henrietta Sykes.

Dr Jess Armine gives an Introduction to Functional Medicine and why Nutrition is so important to Chronically ill Patients
The Herle Burly was created by Air Quotes Media with support from our presenting sponsor TELUS, as well as CN Rail. I'm excited to welcome Armine Yalnizyan as our guest today. Armine is a leading voice on Canada's economy. According to Maclean's Magazine, who ranked her #22 on their Power List. She's the Caring Person's economist and a big picture thinker who looks out for the little guy. Armine coined the term “She-cession”, way back in March 2020, to describe the economic fallout of the pandemic and is currently the Atkinson Fellow on the Future of Workers. Her mission as a policy thinker and innovator, is to bring a worker's perspective to the public policy development process and to help all of us make sense of what's happening in the economy. And these are precisely the things we're going to talk about today:Why do working people deserve a bigger slice of the pie?How do they get it?How will hordes of gig workers ever find security? And what's the role of government in all of that?Thank you for joining us on #TheHerleBurly podcast. Please take a moment to give us a rating and review on iTunes, Spotify, Stitcher, Google Podcasts or your favourite podcast app.Watch conversations from The Herle Burly on YouTube.

In this podcast Armine' Iknadossian and Kelly Grace Thomas ask Poetry Salon founder Tresha Faye Haefner when and how she decided to make a full commitment to her poetry. Tresha discusses feeling out of place in performing arts, but needing to reach out, needing to make sense of silence, mystery, chaos, the largeness of the world and the passage of time. What can we learn from silent animals and wordless artifacts? How can we react, what can we say about all this mystery? In terms of rewriting poems she shares the value of using “how to” books, and looking for the right form to fit an idea. Rewrite Strategy: Try using different forms to address the same subject. Everything from sonnet, to the modern forms of Structure and Surprise. And don't be afraid to use How to Books for new ideas. They're cheaper than an MFA.
Does a poet have to write every day? In this podcast, Armine Iknadosian discusses what it means to be a “poet-in-the-world.” For her this means having a “poet-mind” instead of a “practical-mind.” She continuously scrolls through the world around her for stories that want to be told, whether they be her own stories, or stories from voices across the globe. In this way her work is a matter of both inspiration and procrastination. . . and when she can't get a poem “right,” she respects the poem enough to give it “space,” until the poem itself is ready to be written. Rewrite Strategy: In writing about big, personal subjects like family relationships, Armine discusses the value of finding a single moment that reveals the complicated nature of the entire relationships. Look for a scene or instance that shows both the positive and negative aspects of the person or relationship and focus on that scene.
