Thank you for all of your support. Please let us know what you think about our podcast and what topic you may want to hear from us. Leaders, Lead Well! You're a mid-career professional. Maybe sporting a little more gray than you did just a few years ago. You may have just lost your job, or feel that ageism has crept into your office and you are getting lost because the system doesn't know how to value people approaching or after 50. Yourself included. The simple fact of the matter is that age-based discrimination is alive and well, the workforce is becoming increasingly multi-generational, and careers are becoming less linear and more portfolio-based. Worse yet, the hiring system is broken! So instead of trying to turn back the clock, or try to repeat the years, you need to take back control over your career, define the value you deliver, and get your network to sell that for you.John Tarnoff is a career transition coach who helps people build more sustainable, meaningful, and purposeful careers that align with their values and their most prized talents.John joins Rich and Maikel as we discuss the importance of redefining age and careers on this episode of Mainline Executive Coaching ACT.John can be reached at: https://johntarnoff.com/ Leaders, Lead Well!Thank you to all of our listeners in over 70 countries and 750 cities worldwide, we greatly appreciate your support! Passion is fleeting, but your skills and how you can be of service are enduring. Your resume won't get you hired. It's about demonstrating your value in ways that resonate beyond paper. Assessments are pointless. Focus on showcasing your real-world impact instead. Stop applying to jobs you can do; attract the jobs you were born to do. Your unique abilities and experiences make you the perfect fit for specific roles. Confidence comes last. Don't wait for it; act first and let confidence follow. We explore how to stop complaining about ageism and instead, actively demonstrate your value. This episode provides actionable insights on reinventing yourself, overcoming outdated business cultures, and navigating the job market with a fresh, empowered perspective. Tune in to learn how to transform your career setbacks into your most significant comebacks. It comes from seeing ourselves in a new light. John Tarnoff had a long career in the entertainment business. Find Your Dream Job guest John Tarnoff is here to share how to be more confident by clarifying what you bring to the table. John has four specific questions to ask yourself- what do I do best; what do I love to do; what does the world need; what can I get paid for? Once you have these answers, you can approach any interview with confidence in the value you offer. About Our Guest: John Tarnoff (http://linkedin.com/in/johntarnoff) is a coach, speaker, and author who helps mid and late-career professionals achieve meaningful careers. John Tarnoff is an executive and career transition coach, speaker, and author who supports mid and late-career professionals in defining, planning, and achieving more meaningful and sustainable careers. Fired 39% during his 35 years as a film producer, studio executive, and tech entrepreneur, he learned how to turn setbacks into successes in a volatile business. He reinvented his career at 50, earning a master's degree in spiritual psychology to share his lessons with others facing similar challenges. He is the author of the best-selling book, "Boomer Reinvention: How to Create your Dream Career Over 50" and has created four courses on the multi-generational workforce for LinkedIn Learning. Some of the topics we discussed include: In networking, you should follow your “A B G” (“Always, Be, Giving”): think first about what you can do to support the people in your network before asking for help. Worry about how you can meet someone that can refer you for the job – don't worry about what the job description says about the role. The role you want in the future needs to connect with your values. Follow three keys in searching for your next great job 1. Focus on your Superpower (what you do best) 2. Build a Community (like-minded colleagues to refer you to opportunities) 3. Become a Thought Leader (Stand up for what you stand for, build trust and credibility). The career you want is already inside of you: follow your inner knowing and intuition. Question the negative messages that will come at you. To create your future, you need to reconcile your past: clear emotional baggage and limiting beliefs. These are just a few of the great ideas and suggestions John shared. I hope you enjoyhis experiences, thought leadership, and energy as much as I did. Thankyou for listening to this episode of “People in Transition”.

Fired 39% of the time in his career as a Los Angeles-based film producer, studio executive, and tech entrepreneur, John Tarnoff had learned the secrets of turning setbacks into successes. And when his tech startup folded at the end of the dotcom bubble in 2001, his "aha moment" happened - sending him back to school at age 50 to earn a master's degree in spiritual psychology. Pivoting to a focus on people and career counseling, John networked his way to a new role as Head of Show Development at DreamWorks Animation from 2006-09. In this position, he developed culture-changing creative leadership training and college recruiting programs, now used by top universities and corporate clients. Author of Boomer Reinvention: How to Create Your Dream Career Over 50, John shares his experiences in this episode and offers actionable strategies to those looking to find a meaningful job for the second half of life that can be not only financially successful, but personally fulfilling as well!
John Tarnoff is a non-traditional, career transition coach. A veteran of Hollywood, John was fired 7 times over the course of his lengthy career in entertainment. At age 50, he decided to go back to school and earned a master's degree in spiritual psychology. Pivoting to a focus on people and career counseling, he eventually wrote "Boomer Reinvention: How To Create Your Dream Career Over 50." He is frequently interviewed by top tier media (CBS This Morning, Forbes, CNBC, Market Watch and Next Avenue to name a few) on the topic of career transition. “That career you want, that unretirement career, second career, sustainable career over 50 is already inside you,” encourages John Tarnoff, Career Transition Coach. John joins Mike Horne in conversation to talk about midlife career transitions and finding purpose in a new career later in life. Many people are held back by the limiting belief that once they reach a certain age, they can no longer have a fulfilling career. Through coaching exercises, John helps his clients realize their potential and defy ageist stereotypes. Mostly it comes down to engaging the imagination and helping clients gain the confidence to believe and trust in themselves. We are living longer, and by midlife many people experience a mindset shift that encourages them to look for more profound meaning. This meaning can often be found in a new career. Tune into this week's episode of the Authentic Change Podcast to learn more about defying ageism in the workforce and the potential for finding a meaningful new career at age 50 and beyond. Quotes: “We're living longer. We still want to work. We're a generation that is very motivated by work, and get a lot of meaning and purpose out of that. What are we going to do? So I came up with a prescription, a kind of a self responsible prescription for how people can go about evading the ageist workforce and the broken recruiting and hiring system and sustaining and prolonging their careers.” (5:22-5:53 | John) “That career you want, that unretirement career, second career, sustainable career over 50 is already inside you. On some deep level, we already know what it is that we want to do. That thing we do best, which is the thing that is most useful. But on the other side of it, getting back to the question of baggage, in order to create that career, in order to create that future, we have to reconcile the past.” (13:02-13:32 | John) “Getting out of our heads and back into our hearts is where I see a lot of the work.” (18:42-18:49 | John) Links: Learn more about Mike Horne on Linkedin Email Mike at mike@mike-horne.com Find more about Leading People and Culture with Authenticity Learn more about John Tarnoff: Johntarnoff.com https://www.linkedin.com/in/johntarnoff/ Podcast production and show notes provided by HiveCast.fm

Career transition and reinvention are no longer a rare path, they are the new normal. A confluence of factors in our world has led to career displacement or a change in what work means to us. Whether it's the lack of job security in corporate, getting older and wanting to leave an unfulfilling job, or external factors like the pandemic, many people are choosing the path of free agency. It allows them to take control of their lives and maximize their full potential. This is especially true for seasoned professionals who want a more meaningful job in the second or third part of their careers. Their work and life experience make them perfect candidates for a new career direction. Why is this moment in history creating a massive push for career reinvention? How do we hone in on where we can be most valuable in a new career? In this episode, I'm joined by career transition coach, author of Boomer Reinvention: How to Create Your Dream Career Over 50, and speaker John Tarnoff. He talks about the factors and forces driving the career transition trend. Three Things You'll Learn In This Episode Why people over 50 make great candidates for career pivots As we get older, we tend to pivot from a focus on material wealth to a focus on meaning, purpose, and spirituality. This meaning and purpose can be applied to our profession and the work that we do. By going into a second career that's aligned with a value proposition, we can get more fulfillment. How to set yourself apart in the job market Instead of trying to apply for every single job available, come up with a value proposition that aligns you with a specific profession. If you get clear on the value you provide and have a really clear sense of the impact you can make in your work, you're going to find jobs that align with that. That way, you're not doing their work for them, you're doing your work for them. The importance of closing open mental loops The things that have been on your to-do list for years occupy valuable space in your head and in your psyche. They create subtle anxiety and interfere with your ability to move forward. In order to be more efficient and more valuable in your career pivot, you have to clear out those open loops.
