Welcome to Season 5 of the Forty Drinks Podcast. I'm kicking off the season with an exploration of transition versus change, which are entirely different things according to William Bridges, PhD in his best-selling book, Transitions: Making Sense of Life's Changes. Transition vs. Change: Navigating the Midlife TransitionStephanie McLaughlin kicks off season five of the Forty Drinks Podcast by exploring the concept of transition versus change, inspired by the best-selling book by William Bridges, PhD, Transitions: Making Sense of Life's Changes. The way William Bridges presents the two concepts, they are not the same thing at all. These two words are not interchangeable. A change, he says, is situational and external. It could be starting or leaving a job or relationship, having a baby, moving to a new place, the death of a parent, getting married or divorced, starting or buying a business, leaving the military, changing career, your kid going off to college. All these are CHANGES. A transition is psychological and internal. It is the reorientation or redefinition of the self that you go through in order to incorporate these changes into your life. Unless this transition happens, he says, change doesn't work. Further, transition, as Bridges presents it, is a three stage process. First, there is an ending. Then there is a neutral zone. Then, there is a new beginning. He describes the subject of the book as: “the difficult process of letting go of an old situation, of suffering the confusing nowhere of inbetweenness, and of launching forth again in a new situation.”These concepts, and more from the book, will provide a framework for the midlife transition that we'll go back to throughout the season. During her talk Kirsty referred to Cruse Bereavement Care who offer training, bereavement counselling and a number of ways of supporting people in bereavement. Ingrid Kirst, the CEO of Ingrid Kirst Consulting, brings a refreshing perspective on understanding change at nonprofit organizations. She highlights the importance of differentiating between change and transition, using the Bridges model developed by William Bridges. Ingrid begins with the point that change represents external events, such as leadership changes or relocations, while transition involves the internal process of how individuals perceive and adapt to those changes. "Just because something changed doesn't mean we were ready for it mentally." This quote encapsulates the central theme, highlighting the significance of managing the emotional and mental aspects of transitions within nonprofit organizations. Ingrid elaborates on the three stages of the Bridges model: Endings: Organizations need to acknowledge what is ending and give everyone the opportunity to process their feelings and concerns about the change. Neutral Zone: This is the in-between phase where individuals begin to adapt to the new reality. It's a time for creativity, brainstorming, and preparing for the new beginnings. New Beginnings: The final stage involves embracing the change, setting new goals, and involving everyone in shaping the future of the organization. The fast-paced discussion covers the importance of effective communication throughout the change process, with Ingrid highlighting the need for consistency in conveying information. She stresses how over-communication can be beneficial, ensuring that staff and NPO stakeholders are well-informed about the ongoing changes and the organization's plans. As the interview concludes, Ingrid makes a prediction for the nonprofit sector, stating that more organizations are becoming open to discussing and preparing for change and transition. She emphasizes that proactive planning and communication can ultimately lead to more resilient and stable nonprofit organizations. Automations are great, but don't forget about the soft skills and the people aspect of managing your team.  "I really am very passionate about transforming the great employee resignation and quiet quitting into the great employee restoration." —  Molly McGrath Thank you to our Sponsors!LegalEase Marketing: https://legaleasemarketing.com/Moneypenny: https://www.moneypenny.com/us/Practice Panther: https://www.practicepanther.com/ Episode References: Law Firm Admin Bootcamp: https://hiringandempowering.com/law-firm-leadership-development-program/Book: Transitions by William Bridges - https://www.amazon.com/Transitions-Making-Sense-Lifes-Changes-ebook/dp/B004ZY23TS About Molly McGrath: Since the late nineties, Molly has coached, consulted, and directed presidents and founders of national organizations and over 4,000 law firms in; executive-level leadership, continuous improvement, and team empowerment initiatives to infiltrate new markets, leveraging partner ecosystems and producing profitability. Today's adults are living longer, healthier lives. In years past, when someone retired, they could expect to live another ten or 15 years, leaving plenty of time just to enjoy the fruits of a lifetime of hard work. But retirement can become less appealing when you're facing 20 or 30 years of nothing but leisure--and perhaps some boredom. It can be daunting to face starting a new career at 60, but an encore career can be rewarding in many ways. You may need to reposition yourself in the market to reflect your value proposition to fit your new career target. You might even need to polish your networking skills. With thoughtful planning, your encore career can be exactly what you envision. In this episode, Lynn's guest is Gina Riley, a career transition coach who teaches leaders and executives how to step into new careers. With her nine-step Career Velocity system, Gina works with her clients on marketing, LinkedIn, job searches, strategy, networking, and becoming thought leaders in their areas of expertise. Gina reveals some of her secrets to elevating her clients' confidence while guiding them toward their new career adventures. We'll dive deeper into these concepts: How Gina Riley transitioned from a career in HR to inventing a nine-step model designed for executives and leaders to help them navigate the messy middle Why an extended career has become even more important as we are living healthier and longer lives The amount of time having a growth mindset can add to your lifespan How Gina assists her clients in transitioning to a new career by laying the groundwork before the change Your value proposition in a new field and the role of a diverse network in your career transition The steps to build your value proposition in your encore career using Gina's recommended tools Why you should be approaching your encore career with a spirit of inquiry and curiosity How to create a unique value proposition and talk about it with confidence and clarity How she teaches her clients to become thought leaders The reason to start making a plan for your encore career before it's time to make the leap Now, for some action steps: Download the free worksheet: Three Steps You Need for a More Productive Workday Books by William Bridges: https://wmbridges.com/books/ Read: YouMap Visit Gina's website: https://ginarileyconsulting.com/ My Resources: A quick guide to help you get started on your Encore Journey encorecareermindset.com My Website https://www.lynnfriesth.com/ Please leave a Rating and Review: Since this podcast is new, I'm asking for Apple Podcasts reviews. When we pick up on the Israelites story today, we find them in what William Bridges, in his book Transitions, calls “the neutral zone.” And I don't know about you, but that word neutral immediately makes me think of being stuck. You put your car in neutral and floor the gas- doesn't matter, you're not going anywhere. And that feeling isn't too far off from how Bridges defines this part of a transition. He says that the Neutral Zone: (SLIDE) the in-between time where you hang suspended between what “was and will be” (p.40) Basically, this is the part of the transition where we wait. And wait and wait and wait some more. And it's not always pretty when we wait for an extended period of time. We can get impatient, we can want to give up...all the momentum has run out once we hit the neutral zone, and we have to figure out if we're going to make it to what comes next or if we're going to bail. I don't know what kind of change or transition you might be going through right now- it might be a job change, the end of a relationship, trying to get your kids back on a school schedule, or beginning to care for an aging parent. It might be a transition that you've chosen or one that you're dreading. But I do know that at some point, each and every one of us during a transition is going to want to give up. We're going to wonder if it's worth it or we're going to hit a patch of grief that feels too big. If that's where you are today- if you're wondering if you're going to make it through, or you're just exhausted by the waiting- I want to encourage you to keep going. Perseverance doesn't magically take the hard stuff away. But it does point us toward hope and what's possible.   See sermon notes and more at stlukesumc.com/sermons  Subscribe to receive our latest messages: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCQ2noPhgDOhmto8RUWahIww?sub_confirmation=1   To support St. Luke's in our mission to be an open, antiracist, justice-seeking church, visit http://stlukesumc.com/give.  We are an open community of Christians helping people find and give hope through Jesus Christ - regardless of their gender, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, nationality, disability or socioeconomic background.   ——  STAY CONNECTED  Website: https://stlukesumc.com  St. Luke's UMC Facebook: https://facebook.com/stlukesindy  St. Luke's UMC Instagram: https://instagram.com/stlukesindy  St. Luke's UMC TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@stlukesindy  St. Luke's UMC Twitter: https://twitter.com/stlukesindy  St. Luke's UMC YouTube: https://youtube.com/stlukesindy  St. Luke's UMC Vimeo: http://vimeo.com/stlukesindy

In the first of two episodes about leading through change - Angie talks about what change is and shares the William Bridges' Transitions model.  Change is situational - transition is psychological.  We dig into why knowing this difference matters. Sometimes we get in a rut in our homeschools and do not make the changes that are necessary for our children to succeed. In our Homeschool podcast, you'll learn how to navigate change in your home by placing yourself at the helm of your homeschool, whilst also trusting in Allah and your instincts. (Affiliate Links may be included. See Disclaimer for more information.) In Episode 79 of the Raising Mums podcast, I share how we can manage to navigate change in our homeschool and positively move through transitional phases. This Homeschool Podcast episode discusses: Embrace the emotions you and your children feel during these periods of transition. Do not feel shame or guilt for a feeling. According to the author William Bridges, there are three stages to managing a transition: 1. Letting go, 2. Uncertainty 3. Acceptance Change is a time when we "remember". Imam Al-Hadad says that remembrance is, "the pillar of the Path, the key to realization, the weapon of the seekers, and the unfolding of sainthood." - The Book of Assistance. Trust that whilst you may not understand it, or want it, Allah has a plan. Don't hold your plans too tightly. This is not the end, but a new beginning. On the authority of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), who said that the Prophet (ﷺ) said: "Allah the Almighty said: I am as My servant thinks I am" (Hadith Qudsi 15) Related by al-Buhkari (also by Muslim, at-Tirmidhi and Ibn-Majah). It's been said that the only constant in life is change. While that's true, it's not always reassuring. Change, as William Bridges explains it, is “situational: the move to a new site, the retirement of the founder, the reorganization of the roles on a team.” It can be the end of a relationship, the death of a parent, the move of your best friend. Any change brings with it a gap, some-thing called a transition. These in-between times are hard, even in the best of circumstances, because they represent moving from one phase of life to another. In this episode Lisa shares ideas around change and transition.  Some people thrive in change, others really struggle with it.  Change is an event.  Transition is a psychological process with 3 phases: ending, neutral zone, new beginning.   Based on William Bridges' Transition Process Model, Lisa discusses the difference between change and transition, shares stories demonstrating the change and transition processes, and ideas on how to lessen the difficulty of change.A deeper understanding of the impact of change (through the transition process) helps us respond to and manage this experience that happens over and over in our lives.  Some changes are significant and may take years to go through the full transition process.  Other changes are fairly minor and we'll process them within minutes.  Keep in mind that each person processes the transitions in their lives at different paces.  Two people going through the exact same change may have very different journeys through the transition process.Read more at William Bridges website Click here for : Books on TransitionsBlog: The Trials of Transitionswww.makelifelessdifficult.com

“Every beginning is a consequence. Every beginning ends something.” Paul ValéryShifting into changes means sensing the new beginning ahead of us.ANDSaying goodbye to what went before.Endings are crucial to positive change. Whether that's about shifting into a new life stage, a new job, a new mindset. And they're often ignored - or rushed past.In this episode I share some things in my own life that are coming to a close - and explore what it takes to create good endings, in order to build strong beginnings.*****What endings are you facing? How do you want to create your own new beginnings? Endings can also be what happens when we decide to let something GO emotionally.William Bridges - an expert on change - saw that there's a difference between CHANGE & TRANSITIONWe ALL respond differently to change - we're seeing this in technicolour with the shifts into and out of lockdown & all the different experiences people are havingThe useful thing is to be aware of how change makes you feel - and then manage that, so you either don't LEAP at change, as a way of avoiding other things that perhaps feel painful or challenging (definitely part of my own MO). Or AVOID change, because of fear - and then end up limiting your options, your life choices because of that - and perhaps miss out on something that would really fuel you.Bridges model has 3 stages - ENDINGS, TRANSITION (or neutral) & NEW BEGINNINGS. It's important we're aware of all three - choosing to make a change, means BEING AWARE of what we are ENDING. If there's something you're exploring right now and want some support with making your own change - with creating your own ending, building your own bridge and reaching your own new beginning, you know where I am.I've also shared the piece from My Darling Girl below. Henny xREFERENCESMy darling girl - Henny FlynnGRATITUDEThank you as always to Angus McLeod at changomusic.com for his music and production.Join the mailing list & receive the mini-course '3 little acts of self-compassion', completely free https://hennyflynn.ck.page/6e83d0227eExplore Henny's coaching, books, retreats, courses & events https://www.hennyflynn.co.uk/

Clare and Steve are joined by Julia Menaul for an exploration of grief, loss, death and bereavement in coaching and supervision. Julia, a master coach, supervisor, director of AoCS and an author, explores with Clare and Steve the story that lead to her co-authoring a book on this topic, to be published in 2022. Together our podcasters and guest explore our personal, societal and cultural relationships to death. They also discuss how grief and loss come in many more guises - be it loss of job, divorce, the pandemic, and can also show up in perceived positive experiences, such as retirement, marriage, birth. Each shares personal stories relating to grief and loss. Our threesome go on to explore what we can do as coaches to prepare and support our clients - be that personal development work on ourselves, such as exploring our own loss, trauma or death narrative; be it honouring what is with our client - "feel before we deal"; or maybe applying some of the basic models we already have knowledge of as coaches and supervisors, such as the change curve or William Bridges transitions model.AC Webinar Series: Coaching Through Bereavement in a Pandemic - a series of three 90 minute sessions in March / April 2020 with Julia Menaul and Maggie João: https://bit.ly/39JImvvhttps://www.associationofcoachingsupervisors.com/
