Yet, providers may not consistently ask parents/guardians about firearm ownership as a part of the wellness/preventative exam. Or, they may not be comfortable addressing firearm ownership and safety. Research and statistics have concluded that children who live in a home with a firearm are at increased risk of death by suicide or unintentional injury compared with children who live in a home without firearms. This podcast will discuss the guidelines for safe gun ownership as well as effective communication strategies in addressing gun ownership with parents/guardians as well as adolescents. The American Academy of Pediatrics has issued guidelines for safe gun ownership that will be reviewed as well as guidelines for providers.   Objectives  At the conclusion of this offering, the participant will be able to:  Discuss the epidemiology of firearm injuries in children. Discuss the current trends in intentional and unintentional firearm injuries in children. Describe effective strategies to discuss firearm safety with families. Review the evidence-based practices to reduce the risks of gun-related injuries to children and teens; including screening recommendations and firearm storage/safety. Recognizing and ManagingPediatric Suicidality   Evaluation and Credit:  https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/MedChat49   Target Audience             This activity is targeted toward primary care and pediatric healthcare providers and advanced providers.   Statement of Need  Suicide is a major public health concern and the second leading cause of death for adolescents. Research suggests that many patients that commit suicide had seen a health care provider within two months preceding the event; yet, research also indicates that pediatricians may not feel adequately trained to manage behavioral health complaints, including suicidality. These factors reinforce the need for practitioners to screen patients for imminent suicidal risk. However, even if a screening assessment is utilized routinely, providers may not be fully comfortable managing a patient presenting an identified risk.  (Adolescent suicide: what can pediatricians do? The Institute of Aging has projected that those aged 60 and over will increase to 25.6% of Kentucky's population by 2030.  Due to the aging population in Kentucky and the increasing prevalence of dementia it is important for providers to be able to recognize the symptoms of dementia as well as to be able to differentiate clinical characteristics with delirium.   Objectives At the conclusion of this offering, the participant will be able to: Discuss the differences and similarities between dementia and delirium. Identify the symptoms and characteristics of dementia and delirium. Define the different types of dementia. Review the initial treatment options for dementia.   Moderator Carmel Person M.D. Geriatric Medicine Norton Healthcare   Speakers Rachel Hart, D.O.   Geriatric Medicine Specialist Norton Neuroscience Institute   John J. Describe the essentials of genomic testing. Define key applications in clinical medicine where genomic testing is utilized: constitutional, oncology and microbiological.   Moderator Steve Patton, D.O. Podcast:  Current Opioid Minimization in Spine Surgery Evaluation and Credit: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/MedChat30 Target Audience             This activity is targeted toward primary care pediatric specialties. Statement of Need Approximately 38% of patients are still using opioids one year post-surgery for elective spine procedures.* This rate can be affected by interventions prior to surgery to decrease in-hospital and post-surgery opioid consumption. The goal with new protocols is to either reduce or completely eliminate the opioid prescribing following surgery therefore decreasing the risk of patient abuse and addiction. This program will discuss research being conducted that will highlight effective alternatives to opioids for the management of post-surgical pain, as well as patient characteristics that can lead to opioid use. Objectives At the conclusion of this offering, the participant will be able to: Discuss nonopioid modalities for pain management. Discuss research protocols employed to minimize the prescribing of opioids post-spine surgery. Describe the clinical modalities for nonopioid pain control: pre-surgical, intra-operatively and post-surgery. List patient characteristics and modifiable risk factors that contribute to opioid use.
