Over the last decade, India has seen the emergence, or re-emergence, of a number of infectious diseases. Not only have seen an alarming surge in the number of dengue and chikungunya cases, we've had Zika and Nipah virus cases, and even an Ebola scare. This is in addition to existing diseases that we are still battling -- such as tuberculosis, malaria, Kala Azar and others, and all while India battled the COVID-19 pandemic over the last two years. Some estimates indicate that about 60 per cent of infectious diseases and 70 per cent of emerging infections of humans are zoonotic in origin, with two-thirds originating in wildlife. India, a tropical country, that is still, in many parts, grappling with inadequate sanitation, overcrowding, and lack of adequate access to healthcare, has also, of late, been subject to extreme climate events -- all of these, and other factors such as human encroachment into wildlife terrain may also be playing a role in the emergence of infections or surge in cases. What do we know about why these infections come in spurts? Are there any vaccines for them and if not, why not? Is India particularly vulnerable to infectious diseases? And what can the government do to prepare and strengthen our already over-burdened healthcare systems? We speak about this and more in the podcast. Guest: Dr Priscilla Rupali, Professor Department of Infectious Diseases Christian Medical College, Vellore Host: Zubeda Hamid

Should you care? As you know the US Congress recently raised the debt ceiling a modest amount to avoid default, and in doing so will decide this coming December what to do when we invariably bump up against the ceiling, again — risking default and potential financial crisis. So we thought it would be good to break down some of the financial items at play leading up to their decision and other economic subjects that we hear so much about, like the debt ceiling, inflation, and bitcoin. Who better to help us understand than friend of the show University of Houston Department Chair and Professor Department of Economics Dr. Deitrich Vollrath. Hopefully, you will be better informed beyond a news headline, and be armed with more context to speak around these contentious and nuanced subjects. We welcome you being a part of the conversation, so please leave comments to share your thoughts. Dr. Christopher Beevers talks about digital intervention as a treatment option for people who experience depression and other mental challenges. He shares about deprexis®, a digital depression therapy program, and how this web-based software for depression uses techniques similar to what you'd experience with a healthcare provider. Dr. Beevers views most digital interventions as candidates for first-line treatment. They will not replace medication or traditional therapy. But it's just another kind of treatment option that is more accessible to people. He believes a platform like deprexis® is less threatening because people don't have to open up to another human being and worry about being judged. "Our real 'next barrier' in the continuum of care is, it's okay to have pain, right? It's expected to have pain. [...] but it is better for you recovery wise, complication wise; to be able to get up, move around, know what's going on, not be confused, right? A little bit of that education goes a really long way." This book was written in response to the common question, “Why are there so few minority visitors to National Parks?”. In response, Dr. Jackson challenges mainstream beliefs about leisure and race, as well as highlighting African American active and diverse pursuits of leisure in spite of the legal and social exclusion. We explore the original enslaved African caving history at Mammoth Cave, the Green Book, Black entrepreneurship, and Black beaches during segregation. We close out by discussing how COVID-19 reframes the concepts of space and exclusion for those who have maybe never had to think about it before, as well as where Dr. Jackson sees the Black Lives Matter movement taking the conversations and hopes present within the book. I'm thrilled to welcome Dr. David Rakel to The Porch to talk about compassion in the Workplace. He's the author of The Compassionate Connection, where he outlines the research behind compassion and healing in doctor-patient relationships. This book turned treating people compassionately from a ‘nice to have' to a ‘critical' status. Three things Dr. Rakel said today on the Porch that I am processing as a leader: 1. When we don't have enough time to connect, we (as doctors) prescribe more things and order more tests. When you sit with full attention and a sense of curiosity and compassion the truth comes more easily. 2. Authenticity is mostly nonverbal. 3. Anyone who is a leader of other humans should have to go through a self-reflective process so they can serve others without their ego getting in the way. Dr. David Rakel was founder and director of the University of Wisconsin Integrative Medicine program. He is now professor and chair of the Department of Family & Community Medicine at the University of New Mexico. You can find Dr. David Rakel here ⬇️ https://davidrakel.com/

Decades after the second wave feminist movement, how do today’s college-aged women think about the effects of combining work and motherhood on children’s outcomes? In Goldberg’s study, she compared how students estimated the effect to meta-analytic effect sizes, which provided the ‘actual’ effects of maternal employment on children. Results indicated that, on average, college women overestimate the negative effects of maternal employment, especially full-time employment, on children. Significant variability in the direction and accuracy of the stereotypes was explained by individual characteristics such as culture/ethnicity, work values, and gender attitudes. In this seminar, we will discuss implications for work/life plans of the generation coming to adulthood. Speaker: Wendy Goldberg, Professor Department of Psychology and Social Behavior, UC Irvine
