Evaluation and Credit: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/medchat74 Target Audience This activity is targeted toward primary care physicians and advanced providers. Statement of Need With the 2023 DEA regulation changes, physicians can now treat patients with Opioid Use Disorder (OUD) without requiring an X waiver. As the demand for treatment providers rises, primary care providers are pivotal in addressing this gap by initiating OUD treatments. However, many providers fail to recognize these patients and may refer them elsewhere, missing opportunities for immediate care. Part One: Hidden Victims: A Guide for Healthcare Providers in Identifying Human Trafficking Victims Evaluation and Credit: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/MedChat61 Target Audience This activity is targeted toward primary care providers, advanced providers and healthcare clinicians. Statement of Need According to the American Public Health Association, the health system plays an important role in identifying and treating victims of human trafficking. Estimates show that approximately 80 percent of human trafficking victims are women, and health care providers are often the first professionals to have contact with trafficked women and girls. Clinicians need to be aware of red flags that their patient could be a victim of human trafficking, best practices for screening and assessing patients for trafficking, and their response as a health care professional, and resources for assisting the victims. Providers should know how to screen patients for human trafficking; and what to do if there are indicators of a potential victim of human trafficking. Objectives At the conclusion of this offering, the participant will be able to: Discuss the scope of human trafficking locally and nationally. Identify the red flags of human trafficking and screening questions to ask, so that a potential victim can be identified when they are accessing the healthcare system. Human Trafficking: A Survivor's Story Evaluation and Credit: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/MedChat62 Target Audience This activity is targeted toward primary care providers, advanced providers and healthcare clinicians. Statement of Need According to the American Public Health Association, the health system plays an important role in identifying and treating victims of human trafficking. Estimates show that approximately 80 percent of human trafficking victims are women, and health care providers are often the first professionals to have contact with trafficked women and girls. One study found that close to 50 percent of trafficked individuals saw a health care professional during their exploitation. Objectives At the conclusion of this offering, the participant will be able to: Identify red flags of human trafficking and opportunities for victim identification that can be missed by the healthcare provider. Highlight communication strategies for identifying potential human trafficking victims from the perspective of a victim. Discuss the significance and impact of compassion to the patient in the delivery of health care. Moderator Naomi Warnick, M.D., J.D. Addressing Firearm Injuries in Children and Teens Evaluation and Credit: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/MedChat51 Target Audience This activity is targeted toward primary care and pediatric healthcare providers and advanced providers. Statement of Need Firearm injuries are now the leading cause of death in persons 0-24 years old, surpassing auto accidents. Yet, providers may not consistently ask parents/guardians about firearm ownership as a part of the wellness/preventative exam. Or, they may not be comfortable addressing firearm ownership and safety. Research and statistics have concluded that children who live in a home with a firearm are at increased risk of death by suicide or unintentional injury compared with children who live in a home without firearms. This podcast will discuss the guidelines for safe gun ownership as well as effective communication strategies in addressing gun ownership with parents/guardians as well as adolescents. The American Academy of Pediatrics has issued guidelines for safe gun ownership that will be reviewed as well as guidelines for providers. Objectives At the conclusion of this offering, the participant will be able to: Discuss the epidemiology of firearm injuries in children. Discuss the current trends in intentional and unintentional firearm injuries in children. Describe effective strategies to discuss firearm safety with families. Review the evidence-based practices to reduce the risks of gun-related injuries to children and teens; including screening recommendations and firearm storage/safety. Strategies to DePrescribe in the Geriatric Population Evaluation and Credit: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/MedChat50 Target Audience This activity is targeted toward primary care and geriatric healthcare providers and advanced providers. Statement of Need When patients are being treated by multiple providers and/or by a variety of physicians, The caregivers may not be aware of the complete prescription listing a patient has been prescribed. This is especially true if the patient sees providers in multiple healthcare systems, in that a centralized list may not be available in the electronic medical record. These circumstances may lead to potentially inappropriate prescribing (over-, mis- or underprescribing). Additionally, physicians/providers may not routinely do a medication review with patients that are at risk of polypharmacy. Objectives At the conclusion of this offering, the participant will be able to: 1. Define polypharmacy; highlighting the prevalence. 2. List the factors that contribute to polypharmacy. 3. Describe the risk factors of polypharmacy. 4. Review effective strategies for deprescribing of medications. 5. Discuss key considerations for prescribing new medications. Recognizing and ManagingPediatric Suicidality Evaluation and Credit: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/MedChat49 Target Audience This activity is targeted toward primary care and pediatric healthcare providers and advanced providers. Statement of Need Suicide is a major public health concern and the second leading cause of death for adolescents. Research suggests that many patients that commit suicide had seen a health care provider within two months preceding the event; yet, research also indicates that pediatricians may not feel adequately trained to manage behavioral health complaints, including suicidality. These factors reinforce the need for practitioners to screen patients for imminent suicidal risk. However, even if a screening assessment is utilized routinely, providers may not be fully comfortable managing a patient presenting an identified risk. (Adolescent suicide: what can pediatricians do? Current Opinion; 2020) Objectives 1. At the conclusion of this offering, the participant will be able to: 2. Podcast: The Essentials of Clinical Trials Evaluation and Credit: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/MedChat46 Target Audience This activity is targeted toward all physician specialties. Statement of Need Clinical research is an integral component to the development of new treatments, drugs or medical drugs. Successful patient recruitment has been determined as a contributing factor to the success of clinical research studies. It has been identified that an obstacle in successful studies is the recruitment of sufficient number of patients to participate in research studies. One gap identified in this is the role that providers play in that they may be unaware of how patients can benefit from research studies or how to find applicable studies for their patients. Objectives At the conclusion of this offering, the participant will be able to: Discuss the basics of clinical research including the types of research and phases of trials addressing both adult and pediatric research.
