Originally released on the 27th of May 2015!!! (The original episode contained) In episode 20 of the podcast we catch up with what each other has been watching and/or listening to since last we recorded. Liam tells of his experiences in America. Next we look at the connections between some of the lost classic Doctor Who serials and a landfill in a New Mexico desert (audio segements came from ATARI: Game Over, a documentary made in 2014). I reference some facts that The Tin-Dog Podcast's host Michael, has made in some of his past podcasts (I don't know which one, but I'm sure they exist). Once we hit the news, Liam shares his frustration with Disney and their lack of consideration towards Star Wars fans for what they'll be doing with the continuity established in the book series once episode VII comes out in December. We discuss the news and future releases from Big Finish regarding Torchwood, Doom Coalistion, The Worlds of Big Finish (extreme crossover release) and it's potiential marketing sceme. When we get to the reviews we first finish discussing The Two Doctors classic story, focusing on audio only, but my explaining of what happened visually to add clarification to the story. Next we discuss the Big Finish releases: The Defectors - by Nick Briggs; Last of the Cybermen - by Alan Barnes; Death Match - by Matt Fitton; Suburban Hell - by Alan Barnes; The Well-Mannered War - by Gareth Roberts, adapted by John Dorney; Damaged Goods - by Russell T. Davies, adapted by Jonathan Morris. During the review of Damaged Goods we get into the a second discussion/debate on Doctor Who "Cannon" or what is and what is not cannon, and then back to Star Wars cannon and not cannon. I make a reference to @DoctorSquee's Gallifrey Stands Podcast interview with Paul Cornell. We finish up the show reviewing Jago & Litefoot sereis 9, Blake's 7 Truth and Lies, and Terrahawks Vol. 1, before a quick Game of Thrones discussion to end episode 20. Stay tuned for more Doctor Who goodness, including monthly Big Finish reviews, audio commentary, retro-reviews, the DWAP "Rassilon Seal of Approval" and beyond!

OUR look at the Mary Shelley adventures with the Eighth Doctor comes to a close in this episode, as we go behind the scenes on Army of Death. We have a rare podcast appearance from script editor Alan Barnes, who tells us how the trilogy came to be, as well as Mary's original encounter with the Doctor in A Company of Friends, we meet actor Mitch Benn who plays several stories in the tale, as well as sound designer/musician Kelly Ellis from Fool Circle Productions, who shares his experiences of bringing the adventure to life. It's the penultimate episode in this series - a 13 part run that's become 28! It's just least Tom Baker's last season on TV, except neither Kenny nor Becca are going to regenerate into Peter Davison next week. Promise!
We have landed in Paris 1841 to join the 8th Doctor, Charley, and Gi the Gorilla on an adventure. Doctor Who is bloody old now, and what better way to celebrate it than get a bunch of Doctors together and get them not to play the Doctor. In this episode Dylan and Jack look at 30th anniversary "special" 'The Airzone Solution' staring Jon Pertwee, Peter Davison, Colin Baker and Sylvester McCoy. Written by Nick Briggs and directed by Bill Baggs, this oddity has almost nothing to do with Doctor Who. Then they look at 40th birthday bash 'Zagreus' from Big Finish, much like 'The Airzone Solution' this stars Jon Pertwee, Peter Davison, Colin Baker and Sylvester McCoy not playing the Doctor at all, but fortunately Paul McGann is there playing Zagreus and sometimes the Doctor. The 3 hour and 55 minute epic is written by Gary Russell (who also serves as director) and Alan Barnes.
The news is out - Charley Pollard is returning for a new box set of adventures alongside the Eighth Doctor! Dave and Kenny discuss Charley Pollard - The Further Adventuress (what a great pun - well done, Alan Barnes!), as well as the recent reveal of what's in the Stranded 3 box set. And Kenny gives away NO SPOILERS, despite knowing things.
We look at a presentation at the Erin Arts Centre called 'At the Season's Edge' by Tholtan Theatricals and Caarjyn Cooidjagh. The evening comprised two works commissioned by Culture Vannin: Cori Philips's short, amusing piece called 'Our Loch-y Charm' and a one-act play by Annie Kissack, 'The In-Between Times', both set in the 1860s. We hear two more of the successful poets who have contributed to this year's Isle of Man Poetry Society's Poetry Trail, including Peel and Ramsey as well as Douglas this time. Jerry Carter is a saxophonist and jazz lover who has been involved in organising the first Port Erin Jazz Festival. He tells us about special guests, Alan Barnes and Dave Newton, Beccy Rork and the Leeds College of Music Jazz Band, as well as about the many Island musicians who'll be performing.

Jackie Morrey-Grace has been sharing her poetry with passers-by in London recently and she joins us in the studio. We hear the recording of Ta-ta-taboo fresh from Gyp Buggane’s Ballagroove Studios! Winter can be a really isolating time of year and I thought it might be nice to share what she had to say on the subject with you all. And on February the 1st at Peel Centenary Centre, piano and saxophone duo, Alan Barnes & Dave Newton will be performing with support from Blue Vannin, tickets are available via all the usual outlets.

Jazz Conversations with Craig Milverton Special Guest Mike Hatchard recorded live at The Blue Vanguard Jazz Club Exeter Featuring the Craig Milverton Trio, with Coach York with Al Swainger. For only the second time the club hosted 2 pianos, this podcast is a real treat not only with 2 of the UK's finest pianists but also Mike Hatchard's openness and great humour. We hope you enjoy the podcast. Mike Hatchard has had an extraordinarily diverse career as a musician. He began as the pianist for the National Youth Jazz Orchestra, and studied piano under Peter Wallfisch and composition with Philip Cannon at the Royal College of Music (winning the composer's prize). Subsequently he toured America as Cleo Laine's accompanist as a member of the John Dankworth Quintet and became Matt Monro's youngest ever musical director. However, a penchant for cartooning and comedy made his career take some unexpected turns. He invented a character ‘Marvin Hanglider', and for many years performed at the Edinburgh Festival, described in the Scotsman as a ‘fringe staple.' This led to cabaret on many of the world's top cruise liners and tours of India and Europe. Having composed literally thousands of songs over the years, often appearing on BBC Local Radio making up songs on the spot for people who phone in, he is delighted to at last have some of his work published by Kevin Mayhew. Mike drew cartoons for Carlton TV's ‘After the News' and made his own chat show for CTV. He toured as musical director for comedienne Pamela Stephenson, and co-wrote songs with Frankie Howerd and Spike Milligan. For many years he was closely associated with Herbie Flowers (of Sky fame) which included all sorts of work in prisons, in schools and at the Southbank (Mike has also performed his one man show twice at the Purcell Rooms) and in disabled centres. He has also worked with David Essex, the Pasadena Roof Orchestra, Barbara Thompson's Paraphernalia, the Syd Lawrence Orchestra, Julia Migenes Johnson, Liane Carroll, Alan Barnes, George Martin and Tina May. Recently his career went full circle when he was asked to compere Cleo Laine's eighty-fifth birthday concert at Wavendon, and also appeared alongside Cleo in the celebrated Christmas Shows to packed audiences. As well as being in demand as a jazz musician and raconteur, Mike plays a good deal of classical music. He regularly does educational and community projects for the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra and is resident pianist with the Chamber Ensemble of London. He has taught at Trinity College Summer School and Dartington International Summer School as well as at Worth Abbey. Mike recently went back to something he did a lot of in his youth – painting – and has had a few exhibitions mainly on the South Coast. Thanks to Kevin Mayhew for the bio. Young Winston by Paul Morris London, 1899. After spending time in warzones abroad, Winston Churchill considers a Parliamentary career. But a memento from his visit to Cuba, four years earlier, returns to haunt him. Across the city, the Great Detective has a mysterious caller, all the way from Havana. As ruthless mercenaries wield alien powers, young Winston and Madame Vastra learn they have a mutual friend - an eccentric young man, sporting a bowtie… Human Conflict by Iain McLaughlin 1941. The Prime Minister has much on his mind as London reels from the Blitz. When a daring mission to discover Nazi secrets bears unexpected results, Churchill heads north to retrieve technology that could win the war. But an old ally is set against his intent. Weary from his own people’s conflict, the Doctor knows that some weapons should never enter the field of human conflict. I Was Churchill's Double by Alan Barnes Alexandra Palace, 1942. Strange television signals show a paranoid Churchill urging on the resistance in German-occupied Britain. A man in a battered leather jacket makes a guest appearance. The broadcasts come from another world, one where the country is now part of the Kaiser’s Empire. Of course, the Doctor is involved, and while Churchill claims to understand the notion of ‘alternative histories’, he never expected to be part of one. Churchill Victorious by Robert Khan & Tom Salinsky VE Day, 1945. The war is over. The PM has seen the crowds and made his speech. Episode 36 of the Doctor Who: Alhambra Podcast In this episode of the Alhambra Podcast, the dynamic duo of Brett (@Mavic_Chen) and Liam (@djNezumi) are joined with Legeon (@legeonhenderson) in hosting this episode of the Alhambra Podcast. We started off the podcast with Doctor Who and Big Finish news. First, we react to the news of the 12th Doctor's new companion, Bill, played by actress Pearl Mackie. Then the reaction to the loss of Blake's 7 lead actor, Gareth Thomas. Next we look at some of the up and coming Big Finish news, Meddling Monk appearing in two Doctor Who: Short Trip stories. And of course, off topic discussions do break out...naturally. Reviewing Big Finish releases, we begin with the Main Range release, #211, And You Will Obey Me, written by Alan Barnes, featuring Peter Davision and Geoffrey Beavers. A Master discussion does breakout, future feedback would be appreciated (@alhambrapodcast #master). Next, we move onto the Fourth Doctor Adventure, Legacy of Death, written by Jonathan Morris, part two of a 2 part story (part one was March release, The Paradox Planet). From there we move on to my favorite non-Main Range, Novel Adaptions, Nightshade, written by Mark Gatiss, adapted by Kyle C Szikora. Then we move on to the Doctor Who Spin-Off ranges, beginning with Jago & Litefoot Series 11, featuring Geoffrey Beavers. Next we finish off with Torchwood 2.3 Zone: 10, written by David Llewellyn, and featuring Naoko Mori as Toshiko Sato. 1. The Oncoming Storm by Phil Mulryne Late 1939. Britain faces the might of Germany. Winston Churchill serves as First Lord of the Admiralty. But Churchill soon finds himself facing a more immediate threat than the looming Nazi menace. A ‘Stone' with the most mysterious properties is discovered in the Thames' sands, and soon oddly spoken soldiers are creeping round London ruthlessly trying to acquire it. Who are they? Can Churchill and his new secretary Hetty Warner defeat them? And what about the man in the battered leather jacket that Hetty meets? Churchill feels sure they can rely on the Doctor to help them! Except that this Doctor seems to want to stay hidden in the shadows… 2. Hounded by Alan Barnes In the dark days of 1941, Britain is in the midst of war. Churchill must stand strong against the might of the enemy – but he is plagued by a darkness in his own psyche. Something he calls ‘the Black Dog'. Can a visiting Swami hold the answer to his troubles? And can Hetty Warner prevent the Prime Minister's adversaries from taking advantage of the situation? Across London, the Tenth Doctor's arrival may be the nation's only hope – but the Time Lord's plan to help his friend is endangered when he finds himself declared a traitor by the agents of the country he has come to protect... 3. Living History by Justin Richards Finally given the chance to travel in the TARDIS, Winston Churchill cannot resist the opportunity of meeting Julius Caesar. But the trip does not go quite as planned. With the TARDIS gone, and Churchill stranded in ancient Britain with a young man he barely knows and who comes from the future, it seems things can hardly get any worse. Until he is captured by the invading Romans. Still, at least that means Churchill will meet Julius Caesar after all. But then Churchill learns of the Bronze God, feared and worshipped by the Ancient Britons. A god that he recognises as anything but divine when he meets it. 4. The Chartwell Metamorphosis by Ken Bentley Comfortably retired to his home at Chartwell, Churchill plans to live out his days in peace, in the company of his butterflies – if his attendants would just leave him alone. But it isn't simply Lepidoptera breeding in the gardens, as a far more sinister species is about to emerge from its cocoon – and is ready to feast on something more than just the shrubberies. Surrounded on all sides, the former Prime Minister must put a life's worth of experience into action in order to win the day. Can his new nurse Lily Arwell offer her assistance? Episode 20 of the Doctor Who: Alhambra Podcast has been recorded and is just awaiting post production to occur. In episode 20 of the podcast we catch up with what each other has been watching and/or listening to since last we recorded. Today we put a short behind-the-scenes podcast live looking at this month's Doctor Who - Last of the Cybermen...
@bigfinish #bigfinish #doctorwho #drwho #gally1 DOCTOR WHO - THE SIXTH DOCTOR: THE LAST ADVENTURE 4 February 2015 Categories: , , , , September 2015 sees the release of a very special story from Big Finish, as Doctor Who - The Sixth Doctor: The Last Adventure at last provides a heroic exit for Colin Baker's much-loved Time Lord... It's with some delight we can confirm some tweets and posts, photos and rumours, that something very extra special is coming for fans of the Sixth Doctor at Big Finish, with the September release of . Colin's last outing in the Doctor Who role on television was The Trial of a Time Lord in 1986, but there was no proper handover story to Sylvester McCoy when he joined the series in 1987. Now, 28 years later, the full details of the Sixth Doctor's death will be revealed - and it's part of an epic battle that spans many sections of his life, and involves many of his companions. ‘I spoke to Colin not long after Matt Smith's final outing, The Time of the Doctor, was broadcast on television,' says producer David Richardson. ‘I felt very strongly that regeneration stories, and each Doctor's final end, are very important to Doctor Who fans - these are stories that allow us to see the Doctor at his most courageous, making a sacrifice that only makes us love him more. And so I asked Colin if he might finally consider doing the Sixth Doctor's final story with us. To my huge delight, he said yes.' ‘I owe a lot to Big Finish,' says Colin. ‘They have given my Doctor the opportunity to live beyond those few episodes on television which were recorded during a time when the programme was under siege from various quarters. My Doctor did not benefit from that time. However at Big Finish the Sixth Doctor has lived and breathed anew and developed in a way that I am extremely happy with. ‘That would be the only reason I have agreed to bring my Doctor to an end - although it's not really an end, because Big Finish plucks stories from the whole era of every Doctor. But because I never actually filmed a regeneration, and left poor Sylvester floundering around in my empty clothing with a blond wig on, I have resolutely maintained the lie that I am still the Doctor and all the rest are imposters because I never regenerated!' (He laughs) 'So it's a tribute to the smooth talking people at Big Finish and the standard of the work completed thus far that I have cast aside my reluctance and joined all the other Doctors in actually having a regeneration. ‘And I can promise you: it's a cracker.' will be released in a lavish book-sized box set that contains special photography, bespoke illustrations and behind the scenes interviews, as well as four hour-long episodes. The stories are connected by the presence of Michael Jayston as the Valeyard, the entity that exists between the Doctor's twelfth and thirteen incarnations. The Sixth Doctor won't be alone in battle though, as he'll be joined across the adventures by Constance (Miranda Raison), Charlotte Pollard (India Fisher), Flip (Lisa Greenwood) and Mel (Bonnie Langford), as well as those dedicated detectives, Jago & Litefoot (Christopher Benjamin and Trevor Baxter, alongside Lisa Bowerman as Ellie Higson!) The saga opens with The End of the Line by Simon Barnard and Paul Morris, in which the Doctor and his latest companion Constance (Miranda Raison) investigate a commuter train that has lost its way… In The Red House by Alan Barnes, the Doctor and Charlotte Pollard (India Fisher) arrive on a world that is populated by werewolves. Stage Fright by Matt Fitton takes the Doctor and Flip (Lisa Greenwood) to Victorian London, where investigators Jago (Christopher Benjamin) and Litefoot (Trevor Baxter) explore theatrical performances that have echoes of the Doctor's past lives… Finally, time is running out in The Brink of Death by Nicholas Briggs, as the Doctor and Mel (Bonnie Langford) face the final confrontation with the Valeyard - and the Doctor must make the ultimate sacrifice. ‘It's been such a pleasure to work with Colin on these, giving him a whistle-stop tour of his era,” says Nick, who is also directing. “I felt privileged to write his final moments too. But the wonderful thing for us at Big Finish is that even though this is the end of the Sixth Doctor, we have the luxury of continuing to tell as many stories about him for as long as the BBC allow us. AND UNIT - EXTINCTION 9 February 2015 Categories: , Big Finish is delighted to announce that Kate Stewart and her UNIT team from the Doctor Who TV series will be starring in a brand new series of audio dramas, in a licensing deal with BBC Worldwide. Kate is the daughter of Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, and Head of Scientific Research at the Unified Intelligence Taskforce, which investigates and confronts alien attacks on the planet Earth. The role is portrayed by Jemma Redgrave (Dracula, Frankie, Cold Blood) who has appeared opposite Matt Smith and Peter Capaldi on television, and returns for the audio series. “We're thrilled that Jemma is on board for our brand new UNIT adventures,” says series producer David Richardson, “and we feel privileged to work within the universe of New Series Doctor Who for the first time. will showcase all the excitement, drama and wit that viewers of Doctor Who love.” “Having worked with the greatly missed Nicholas Courtney and his magnificent portrayal of the Brigadier since the early days of Big Finish, it is wonderful to see the return of UNIT under the Brig's daughter,” says executive producer Jason Haigh-Ellery. “We are all very excited about bringing UNIT back to Big Finish with the next generation and look forward immensely to working with Jemma again, who appears in this month's main range release .” “I'm really excited to hear Jemma and her team battling to save the Earth,” says executive producer Nick Briggs. “They've been such an important part of the many exciting things to come out of the Doctor Who TV series in recent years.” Additional cast members for the first box set, , will be revealed later. This first box set release comprises four hours of adventure, in which Kate and her team confront an alien invasion by the Nestene Consciousness and its army of plastic Autons. will be released in November 2015, and is available for specially-priced pre-order, with all pre-orders getting a copy of Nicholas Courtney's memoirs as a free download as Supplementary content in Big Finish accounts. Artie Shaw was one of the most technically brilliant clarinettists in jazz. He was also an improviser, composer and bandleader of the first order, until he ended his career at the age of 44, believing that he had said all he had to say as a musician. Alan Barnes, who has specialised in playing Shaw's music, joins Alyn Shipton to pick the key examples from Shaw's varied catalogue. The music includes tracks by his various big bands, by singers Billie Holiday and Hot Lips Page and by Shaw's small group the Gramercy Five.

Sonny Stitt was one of the finest bebop saxophonists, transferring the style of Charlie Parker to the tenor instrument, as well as developing his own approach to the alto. Fellow saxophonist Alan Barnes joins Alyn Shipton to choose the best examples of Stitt's work, including his recordings with Dizzy Gillespie, Bud Powell and Sonny Rollins as well as the many sessions he led himself.
Despite a lifelong battle with narcotics, harrowingly related in his book "Straight Life", Art Pepper was one of the finest alto saxophonists in jazz. In this programme, British saxophonist Alan Barnes joins Alyn Shipton to choose Pepper's finest recordings, and also reveals the American's remarkable talents on the clarinet, on the tenor saxophone, and as a composer.
