When an adult comes out as trans, it might be a liberating moment in their lives that has felt long overdue. Sometimes, however, the sudden nature of the identity change can feel destabilizing to their loved ones. In this episode, Sasha and Stella discuss the many complex factors in adult transition. Are there elements of liberation, freedom, and independence, or might indoctrination or identity crisis be playing a role? And how can families try to stay connected if the adult begins throwing up rigid barriers which create distance and estrangement? Let's talk about the demographics of those who transition. What's happening if someone transitions in their late 20s? What's going on in a man's mind when he transitions at middle age? For many parents, it's a complete shock that their child wants to change genders. And since they're no longer living at home, the child doesn't want to have an “open discussion” about it. When children tell their parents they're switching majors after three years, that's a huge shock to parents too! Parents want to talk to their children about what's going on. When we're terrified we can act very intensely. Some children don't want to talk to their parents about it because they don't want their fragile or uncertain opinion to be swayed. When someone decides to transition later in their life, they are typically men. Stella shares a story of how a man transitioned shortly after his wife had a baby. It appeared he was envious that he couldn't care for the child in that feminine way. There is a community out there for women who were married to men that have now transitioned. Sometimes people do strange things just to keep the family together. Parents can sometimes feel “abused” by their transitioning teen. What does this typically look like? How do you spot it? For some households, it might make sense to let go with love, or else you and everyone in your family unit will crumble. Watching someone transition is a really disorientating process. It can also really affect younger siblings. There are two sides to the coin. Some children transition okay and continue to lead happy productive lives. Other children get sicker and sicker in their medical journey and the parents (who didn't want this in the first place) are the only ones who are there to pick up the pieces. What are some low-pressure ways to reach out to your child and communicate with them? It's really sad when politics get in the way of a family dynamic and those ties end up being completely broken. Can estranged parents/trans children reconnect again? Remember, the relationship is the most important thing you have. When does it make sense to... Support this podcast

Where to start with the last decade of this week's guest's life? After struggling to get pregnant, Alexandra Heminsley finally conceived at 40 after unsuccessful rounds of IVF. You might hope that was the end of the stress. But no. First came the DNA test that questioned whether the embryo was really hers and then, as she tried to adapt to life as the mother of a much longed-for newborn, her husband D reached a point where they felt they had no choice but to transition. Oh, and She was also assaulted on public transport whilst heavily pregnant. In her compassionate and brave new memoir, Some Body To Love, Alex explores how it feels to be gaslit by your own body, how she finally found peace with hers and what it even means to be a parent. If you're struggling with your own body image, feel you've lost your sense of self or are coping with radical - or even not so radical - change, you may find some solace here. (Also, Trigger Warning: I should tell you that Alex talks frankly about infertility, miscarriage, sexual assault and her experience of her partner transitioning.)The Shift (on life after 40) with Sam Baker is created and hosted by Sam Baker and edited by Emily Sandford. I’ve spent all week thinking about swimming through winter, after talking to my latest podcast guest. While the title of Kirrilee’s book is literal – she is approaching her second winter wild swimming - it is also a metaphor for wild swimming being a way to help us get through tough times. We can all find ourselves stranded deep in winter, at any time of the year, at any time of our lives. This kind of winter can be dark, cold and lonely. I can conjure up images of ploughing on, head down, not sure where I’m going. Knee deep in snow or mud. Every step being an effort. No sign of anything up ahead to make me hopeful that the end was in sight. No one around to ask for help, or to even reassure me that I was going in the right direction and wouldn’t be lost forever. Trudging. Struggling. Tired. Depleted. Thinking about giving up. Worrying what that will mean. I then think about swimming through it. Being lifted up by the water. Supported. Buoyant. Carried along by the current. It may still be dark, cold and lonely, but at least I’m moving more quickly and effortlessly. The water is helping me. Throw in a few swimming buddies and the loneliness disappears. See the moon reflected in the water, or the lights from nearby cars or buildings, and the dark is a gift creating a magical world of multicoloured reflections. And the cold. Oddly, for most of us who decide to swim through winter, rather than battle on on foot, the cold becomes a friend. Medication. Reinforcement that we are going to be ok. We are stronger than we ever imagined. The cold is part of what gets us through to spring. We embrace the cold. Harness its ability to awaken chemical reactions inside us. The way it strips our skin’s surface so that we can really feel, it drags our mind into the immediate now and away from the winter that has stopped us in our tracks. We find ourselves waving not drowning. Swimming through winter, instead of being stuck inside it, frozen and immobile. This episode is for anyone who has ever swum through winter, in a literal or metaphorical sense, and to everyone still swimming. This week's podcast guest said some really profound things, as we giggled our way through recollections of everything that is funny about wild swimming - including trying to put your wetsuit on inside out and hopping around in car parks trying to get dressed. The first profound thing she said was "you'll always find a friend wild swimming." How true is that? Both in terms of the lifelong friends we find through wild swimming, and the friends for a day we find as they emerge from the lake we are about to get into, or who stand nervously next to us at the start of a mass participation event. Those friends, be they with us for a reason, a season or a lifetime, are a gift of wild swimming. The second profound thing Beverley said was "wild swimming saved me that year" as she reflected on the mental breakdown she had had. Both the cold water and the small group of friends, known as the Callander Coven, who had regularly accompanied her to swim in it, had acted as the most profound form of therapy. It had been an essential lifeline. It always feels like a privilege when virtual strangers (or new instant friends as I like to think of them) share such personal experiences with me. It feels like my job, as host of the podcast to stay quiet, to leave the space for the guest to speak. And yet when we move into such emotive, personal and brave territory, staying quiet starts to feel like a small betrayal. Leaving a friend out there alone, exposed. Maybe I'm over thinking it. We talked about books about wild swimming that explore the healing power of the cold water and the community of wild swimmers who surround us and help to keep us afloat. For Beverley, Leap In by Alexandra Heminsley really resonated. For me, I've Found My Tribe by Ruth Fitzmaurice and The Salt Path by Raynor Winn both touched me and connected with some of my own pain and vulnerability. Beverley is lucky enough to live in a part of the world where around 7 lochs are within a few miles drive, leaving her spoiled for choice and able to outwit the weather gods! Without really intending to, she cleverly summed up something of the magic of what is created when cold water in a beautiful setting combine with good friends - swimming into rainbows. While this actually happened to her, for me it is a glorious evocation of what wild swimming means to me, and why I do it. Things we talked about Aberfoyle, Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park, Helensburgh Pier to Pier swim, Loch Ard, Three Lochs Forest Drive, Loch Venachar, Loch Lubnaig, Great Scottish Swim, Great Manchester Swim, NOWCA, Wild West swimmers, Crannogs, Loch Tay, Rabbie's Tours, Glen Coe, Loch Leven, Ballachulish, Rhyl Suncentre, Prestatyn, Aphrodite's pool, Swim Trek, Scottish Open Water Swimming Association, New Cumnock outdoor swimming pool

Those of you who listen regularly will know that I am really passionate about sport and that the theme of running (yes, I am one of those annoying people that loves to run) featured in earlier interviews with Nicola Miller, who founded the charity a Mile in her Shoes, and Alexandra Heminsley, whose memoir Running Like A Girl told the story of her first forays into marathon running as a non-sporty woman.  So much of what I think it is important to encourage is women taking any sort of exercise that they enjoy, increasing participation in varied forms, be that yoga, dance, weight lifting, cycling or anything else in between. But like many others, I am captivated by the Olympics and, particularly following London 2012 which was such a highlight for us here in the UK (people actually made eye contact on the Tube), look forward to the 4 yearly cycle with excitement. I find myself watching and listening - and getting really into - niche sports that I’ve never watched before, like synchronised swimming, archery or judo.  So I goes without saying that I am REALLY excited to feature our first Olympian on the show today. Donna Fraser was born in Croydon in south west London, competed in the Sydney Olympics in the year 2000, and was a professional athlete for over 20 years. She won Gold in the European Junior Championships, and Bronze at the both the World Championships and Commonwealth Games, competing in the 400m, and ran a sensational 4th at the Olympics against all expectations, knocking over a second off her personal best in the process.  Donna's career was not all plain sailing though. Following the highs of Sydney she suffered an Achilles tendon injury that forced her out of training and competition for over three years at the peak of her powers, and she has gone on to say that in her heart of hearts, she is convinced she could have been World Champion in 2001 were it not for injury. But it was not to be, and in a further cruel twist, she was subsequently then diagnosed with breast cancer, aged only 36. Donna's positive nature and extreme focus are evident when she talks about her approach to her illness, and I'm pleased to say that she's made a full recovery. She's an ambassador for Breast Cancer Now, and works to educate and support other women going through breast cancer diagnosis and treatment. But unless you're Jess Ennis or Allyson Felix, or another huge name that receives big sponsorship deals it's hard to make a decent living as an athlete, and remarkably, Donna worked throughout her athletic career. She is now the Vice President of UK Athletics, as well as their Equality, Diversity and Engagement Lead, taking a forward-looking approach and driving change within sport to increase accessibility and participation.  In this episode we discuss: - Donna's early life and when she knew athletics was a viable career option for her - Progressing through her career from a junior gold medal at the European Championships to the Olympics in Sydney 2000 - Training with Cathy Freeman and how you prepare for an Olympic Games - Juggling a job with full time training as a professional athlete  - Transferable skills that she learned as an athlete that have stood her in good stead in the working world - The emotional effect of injury on an athlete - Mental health and retirement of professional sportspeople  - Her current role with UK Athletics and her role in diversity and inclusion - Her breast cancer diagnosis and treatment, and the work she has subsequently done to raise awareness Where to find Donna: LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/donnalegz Twitter: https://twitter.com/DonnaLegz Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/donnalegz/   Follow us for more: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/smashingtheceiling/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/smashingceiling Facebook: www.facebook.com/smashingtheceiling
