In this episode, I talked with Dr. Chris Bruno. Dr. Bruno received his PhD from Wheaton College and is the President and Professor of New Testament and Biblical Theology at Oahu Theological Seminary. He is also the author of multiple books including Paul vs. James: What We've Been Missing in The Faith and Works Debate. Chris is a member of the St. John Fellowship of the Center for Pastor Theologians. In our discussion, Dr. Bruno and I talked about the study of divine Christology. We discussed the nature of Jesus, how the early church came to understand Jesus's divinity, and how they articulated their theology in the Apostles Creed, Nicene Creed, and Athanasian Creed. We talked about what it means that “Jesus descended into Hell” and what Jesus meant when he said, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”. Finally, we talked about his new book, The Divine Christology of the Apostle Paul: Retrospect and Prospect. In this book, Dr. Chris Bruno, Dr. John Lee, and Dr. Thomas Schreiner explain the scholarly work done in the past 50 years related to the Apostle Paul's Christology. I hope you enjoy! Hwæt a Movie returns with the Beowulf film you didn't know you needed to see: SYFY's Grendel. Released at the start of 2007, ahead of Beowulf: Prince of the Geats and Robert Zemeckis's Beowulf, Grendel rides the wave of Beowulf-mania that was sweeping nation back then. Or perhaps it started the craze? And while you might think based on the title that this film picks up where Beowulf and Grendel left off with a more nuanced and sympathetic approach to this epic medieval monster, you'd be wrong. Grendel gives us the more violent and aggressive side of this famous shadow-walker. Chris Bruno stars as Beowulf in this Nick Lyon directed film adaptation of our favorite Old English poem. As you'll see, no one can spin a tale of exposition or spin round and round in combat this Beowulf. With Ben Cross as King Hrothgar and Marina Sirtis as his queen, Onela—wait, Queen Onela? If you know your Beowulf, or your Swedish history, then you may have spotted a problem here. But hey, the film also features a crossbow that shoots magic exploding arrows. Realism and textual fidelity isn't what makes this movie fun! Each episode of Hwaet a Movie includes an exhaustive summary and discussion of the film, a brief Q&A, and then our final ratings categories for the film's take on Beowulf, Grendel, and Grendel's mother. We conclude by rating the film for its faithfulness to the source material and then for its entertainment value. This one was a real pleasure to discuss. We hope you enjoy it as much as we did! Once you've listened, reach out and let us know how we did. Was this the perfect Beowulf? Or is there still room for improvement? Have you seen Grendel? As a licensed professional counselor and dad of three, Chris Bruno is acutely aware of how childhood trauma can impact your fatherhood approach. In this conversation, Chris describes the importance of processing your experiences with others, finding healing from the past, and becoming deeply rooted in brotherhood as you raise your kids. Key Takeaways You became the man you are today because of the guidance or lack thereof from the men who came before you. Exploring your own story means confronting the areas you've walled off within yourself and processing your experiences with others. We are the best fathers when we have brothers alongside us. Trauma continues to pass through generations until someone has the courage to feel it. Chris Bruno Chris Bruno is an author, licensed professional counselor, founder of ReStory, and CEO of Restoration Project. He is passionate about the intersection of transformation and adventure. Chris and his wife, Beth, have three young adult children. Key Quotes "We are the best father when we have our best brothers with us. We need those guys. Those are guys in my life and we need our brothers. And also we need someone else who's on the outside who's got some training, is a professional in some ways to come along side to create a safe space for a child to unfold." "We are heaps of undigested experience. When you have indigestion, there's something unwell about your body. So if there's undigested experience, there's something unwell about your soul and we need someone to come alongside us and to be with us and partner with us and talk through those things with us to digest the experience so that in that moment, we can make meaning in a way that won't be a traumatic meaning. It won't be one of those collapsed vows or walled off moments in life." Send us a textCan comfort be a spiritual stumbling block? As we get older, it's easy to slow down and settle into patterns that prioritize ease over growth. Join us in this episode of Foxhole Symphony as we challenge ourselves and our listeners to examine what it truly means to follow Jesus daily, sharing personal stories from the golf course and the football field that highlight how our physical and spiritual journeys often mirror each other. We explore the idea that we might be too comfortable in our faith, especially when compared to the fervor with which we follow social media influencers and our own appetites. In our discussion, we shift towards the idea of living a life where faith is not a separate compartment but integrated into every moment. Drawing inspiration from John 12:26, we talk about the importance of acknowledging God's presence in all our actions, thoughts, and words, and how this impacts our daily lives. We reflect on the teachings from Chris Bruno's book "Sage," emphasizing the pursuit of wisdom and the joy found in God's creation. This segment underscores the necessity of community and the pitfalls of moralism, successism, and individualism that we must avoid to stay true to our spiritual journey. As the episode progresses, we delve into a lesson in nature, using the image of a perfectly shaped oak tree to discuss the beauty of surrendering to God's plans. We talk about the constant struggle between personal desires and spiritual priorities, and how putting God first provides structure and purpose. Ending on a hopeful note, we offer a prayer for healing and encourage listeners to engage with our community by sharing the podcast and providing feedback. In this episode I talk with Dr. Chris Bruno about a brand-new book he co-wrote called The Divine Christology of the Apostle Paul, which is out now on IVP Academic. This book argues that Paul did believe that Jesus was divine and that this high Christology develops in the earliest years of the church. Bruno reviews the work of four influential scholars, Richard Bauckham, Larry Hurtado, Chris Tilling, and N.T. Wright, who have each developed models for understanding Paul's divine Christology. We then explore the most important Christological texts in Paul, including 1 Corinthians 8:6, Philippians 2:5-11, and Colossians 1:15-20, and Bruno explains how each of them demonstrate that Paul believed that Jesus was God. A common complaint against the scripture is the seeming difference between the God of the Old and New Testaments. It's not uncommon to hear that God is all judgment in the Old Testament and all love in the New Testament. Yet, this is an observation you might believe if you look at the Bible superficially. There are common themes from the Old Testament that point to events in the New Testament and the New Testament constantly refers back to the Old. In this month's interview, author Chris Bruno draws our attention to some of those details in the stories of the Bible. You might be surprised to note how much the Old Testament points to Jesus and the love He shows in the cross. As Chris takes you through some of those stories, may the Lord bless you to see those similarities and embrace the Bible as one whole book pointing to one God, Jesus Christ.Check out Chris's books on Amazon below:The Whole Story of The Bible in 16 Verses:https://www.amazon.com/Whole-Story-Bible-16-Verses/dp/143354282X/ref=sr_1_1?crid=20F98IJBVJFOM&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.NRr1mHgSnetQAO0pOD_Z17iiX_OeFh2w_5zGcVcGFhfkWlc6uuzX8lbkI_0akjYiJdxX8A3bnMfb9xGv9rnG88U4BWHv2aT-px-fIGWU7p_YqAn5xzH1d4BIk3yQGmbkcL7QZBuNCDYja9lnVpSbjXVDNy30sSNjik6qPsjomlAIyzfmMr6BCbZKRGLf0t-Y063-iNF54_jf-jgZzPyXt5pDxtU9IyZD7zhJKa7qLV4.TyUfvQFj9li2OY2Z6fVck0e_JLTXjImeZAj87F3aLQY&dib_tag=se&keywords=Chris+Bruno+bible&qid=1711401415&sprefix=chris+bruno+bib%2Caps%2C219&sr=8-1The Whole Message of the Bible in 16 Words:https://www.amazon.com/Whole-Message-Bible-16-Words/dp/1433553627/ref=sr_1_2?crid=20F98IJBVJFOM&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.NRr1mHgSnetQAO0pOD_Z17iiX_OeFh2w_5zGcVcGFhfkWlc6uuzX8lbkI_0akjYiJdxX8A3bnMfb9xGv9rnG88U4BWHv2aT-px-fIGWU7p_YqAn5xzH1d4BIk3yQGmbkcL7QZBuNCDYja9lnVpSbjXVDNy30sSNjik6qPsjomlAIyzfmMr6BCbZKRGLf0t-Y063-iNF54_jf-jgZzPyXt5pDxtU9IyZD7zhJKa7qLV4.TyUfvQFj9li2OY2Z6fVck0e_JLTXjImeZAj87F3aLQY&dib_tag=se&keywords=Chris+Bruno+bible&qid=1711401415&sprefix=chris+bruno+bib%2Caps%2C219&sr=8-2Support the show
As I watched my corgi, Red, bravely navigate through a foot of snow, his determination mirrored our own quests for purpose and belonging. You're invited to join us in the latest Foxhole Symphony episode, where we intertwine humor with profound insights, exploring our place within God's grand narrative. Through candid reflection and the practicality of journaling, we uncover the transformative power of a life script authored by our Father. Our conversation leads us into the heart of authentic community, where presence trumps productivity, and where each step is an act of faith and discovery. This session isn't just about stories; it's a deep dive into the masterpieces we are, as described in Ephesians 2:10, and the artistry of God's work within and through us. We're not alone on this artistic journey—our 'sages' and mentors guide us, echoing the wisdom found in Chris Bruno's book, "Sage." They remind us to listen closely and act on the heavenly guidance that shapes our path. Together, we navigate the challenges and seasons of redefinition, seeking clarity on the narrative God has written for our lives. Finally, we shed light on the solidarity of brotherhood and the hope found in shared spiritual battles. In the spaces where we can be real and vulnerable, we discover strength. We share tales of spiritual warfare, the importance of surrender, and how we find courage in the promise of victory. This episode is not just a conversation; it's an invitation to recognize ourselves as God's handiwork, to step into the good works He has prepared in advance for us, and to do so with the support of a community that believes in being 'victorious together'.Support the showWe have BIG plans at Foxhole Symphony and sure could use your financial support. In this episode, JT is joined by Drew and special guest Chris Bruno of, co-founder and President of RallyRd, to discuss DomainX's new partnership with Rally, the pioneer of fractional alternative investing, and the upcoming launch of MJ.com on Rally - which will provide the ability for Rally customers to own a piece of this super-premium domain name! However, no interests are being offered for sale through this broadcast. The only manner in which an investor may invest in one of our offerings is by going to the Rally Rd. website or app. Prior to acquiring any interests, potential investors should read the company's offering circular, which is available via the Rally Platform in the "Legal" tab and is also publicly available via the SEC's EDGAR service available at sec.gov. When it comes to addressing trauma in our stories, it can seem as though cultural expectations and the messages received as young boys can keep men from engaging in their pain and ultimately, experiencing true healing. How can men better address their stories of hurt and heartache in a way that helps them to move forward with both strength and tenderness? Counselor and author Chris Bruno began to see a pattern emerge in his own story and in the countless others of those he counseled. Men who didn't receive a clear path in terms of their journey from boyhood to manhood and who didn't address their wounds, often struggled with maladaptive behavior patterns that hurt themselves and others. When there wasn't intentional attunement to their stories of pain, their lives and the ones around them were deeply impacted. It was through this realization that Chris based the work in his practice and his books in order to help men find a way through the terrain of their own hearts and lives into the healing and redemption that God intended. His latest book, Sage: A Man's Guide into his Second Passage, helps men navigate midlife and beyond. In this deep conversation, Davey sits down with Chris to talk about how there is always a story behind our behaviors, the impact of how boys are raised in their emotional health as men, and the stages of every man's journey. This episode is a reminder that God longs to enter into the painful parts of our story and help us find a way to turn that pain into tender strength for those around us.
