When I think about the solo in this song, it has a gravity to it that makes it feel centuries old. You could almost imagine that it has been living underground in some secret grotto since time began, just waiting for the right song to come along and feed it. It feels like a primal life force all its own, as if Mike is possessed by it rather than being its architect and its master. And I know that isn't the case and the reality is that Mike Campbell just has such complete mastery over his instrument and over the musical form that he can write and play something this good and just make it sound effortless and timeless.Today's guest conversation sees the return of the always entertaining Tommy Edwin. We chatted about the music he's released since he was last on the show as well as Wildflowers and of course, this week's song. Once I'm editing, I may break out part of our conversation to release as a standalone bonus episode, but for now, sit back, relax, and enjoy my chat with the marvelous and hugely talented, Tommy Edwin.Check out Tommy's website here: https://www.tommyedwinmusic.com and go check out a live show if you get a chance! To listen to the song, check out the official lyric video here: https://youtu.be/4gBnTnZRneo And to listen to the home recording, check that here: https://youtu.be/PHtEBn3CbWsAnd for the alternate version from American Treasure and Finding Wildflowers, check that one here: https://youtu.be/lqDHyrPW9voDon't forget to follow me on social media, like, subscribe, and please, leave a rating if you like the show.Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thetompettyprojectTwitter: https://twitter.com/TomPettyProjectInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/thetompettyproject/YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@thetompettyprojectAll music other than the piano version of Wildflowers, including the theme song, provided by my very best friend Randy Woods. What is it that makes one a star? Is it talent? Is it perseverance? Or is it just plain hard work? Perhaps it's all three. We'll discuss this and much, much more in this episode's conversation with Debra Monk. When I was studying Theater in College at what is now Frostburg State University in Frostburg, MD. Our Acting teacher, Dr David Press, would give us acting exercises to perform. Often, he would hold up the example of how Debra Monk, or Deb, as he called her, performed a particular exercise as the best example of how to perform that exercise. Debra was a senior then when I was just a freshman, so our paths did not cross very much when we were there. Over the years, I heard of her success, first on TV getting an Emmy for her performance as Andy Sipowicz's wife in NYPD Blue. Then, while visiting Dr. Press, he told me of her shows on Broadway. I looked her up and told her I was coming to see her in the play Curtains on Broadway. She met me after the show and graciously gave me a backstage tour. Later, while she was performing Laughing Wild, a two person show with Christopher Durang in Boston, I met her for lunch and to talk about old times. Two years ago, for Episode 3-6, I asked if she wanted to contribute a message to my acting mentor and our mutual teacher, Dr. David Press. She sent me a glowing tribute which was just wonderful. So, earlier this year I contacted her about an interview, and she agreed to sit with me.I'm Tim Rose and this is the Tim Tunes podcast. In this episode, part 1 of 2 of our interview with Debra Monk, we cover multiple topics: from how she got into the business, how she approaches her work, and stories from her career. Another simple song, another catchy hook, another memorable idea that Tom puts into our heads and leaves there as a treat. I'm 100% sold on Into The Great Wide Open these days, where I didn't listen to it front to back very often before. This song is another little forgotten deep cut that does so much with so little, very economically. The core idea is a fairly profound one but it's wrapped up in a breezy, light little piece of music. Just marvellous. There's a ton to love about this song, both lyrically and musically. We get red-winged hawk, we have Mike and Benmont sharing a solo, we have some beautiful harmonies and all sorts of interesting jamming in the outro.Today's episode covers the fourth song on side two of "Into The Great Wide Open", "You and I Will Meet Again".You can listen to the song here: https://youtu.be/8MVZ1en8evEYou can hear a 2018 remaster, included on the American Treasure boxset here: https://youtu.be/hsisif_mBaYThe Tom Petty Project is a proud member of The Deep Dive Podcast Network, which you can find on Twitter: https://twitter.com/deepdivepodnetDon't forget to follow me on social media, like, subscribe, and please, leave a rating if you like the show:Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thetompettyprojectTwitter: https://twitter.com/TomPettyProjectInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/thetompettyproject/YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCt6BLRWuuAR43zHpNKIirOwAll music, including the theme song, provided by my very best friend Randy Woods. David Cay Johnston books are as important to my understanding on American Tax Policy, economics and how our system is rigged by rich elites for rich elites as anything else I have read Stand Up is a daily podcast. I book, host, edit, post and promote new episodes with brilliant guests every day. Please subscribe now for as little as 5$ and gain access to a community of over 700 awesome, curious, kind, funny, brilliant, generous souls Check out StandUpwithPete.com to learn more David Cay Johnston is a Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative reporter and best-selling author. The Washington Monthly called him as “one of America's most important journalists.” The Portland Oregonian said his work equals the original muckrakers: Ida Tarbell, Upton Sinclair and Lincoln Steffens. Johnston met Donald Trump in 1988 and in April 1990 revealed that Trump's was no billionaire. When Trump announced his latest run for the White House in June 2015, Johnston was the only nationally-known journalist who immediately said Trump was serious this time and might get the GOP nomination. His reporting over the next year led to the Making of Donald Trump, published around the world in English and German on August 2, 2016, by Melville House. The San Jose Mercury recruited Johnston when he was just 18 years old because of his reporting for two small weekly newspapers in Santa Cruz, Calif. At age 19 The Mercury hired him as a staff writer. Within weeks his byline made the front page. Over the next four decades his award-winning investigations appeared in that paper, the Detroit Free Press, Los Angeles Times, The Philadelphia Inquirer and The New York Times. Since 2009 Johnston has taught the business regulation, property and tax law of the ancient world at Syracuse University College of Law. He previously taught writing, reporting and magazine writing at the University of Southern California and UCLA Extension. He has lectured on four continents about journalistic techniques, ethics, legal theory and tax policy. The lyrics in this one are again, really direct and simple. Tom reminisces about his two room apartment and that he's glad he doesn't live there any more, but there's a fondness in the tone. In the second verse, we hear that there's a similar nostalgia for a former relationship that he sometimes remembers wistfully. The chorus underscores all this by giving his current state. “Oh yeah, I'm alright, I just feel a little lonely tonight. I'm okay most of the time, I just feel a little lonely tonight.” So, I'm OK but I could be doing better. There's a romantic pragmatism on display here that elevates the song from being another rumination on lost love over 8 bars or a wallowing self-pity. It's a glass that is definitely half full rather than half empty. You can listen to the song here: https://youtu.be/UR_t-tk1B5UYou'll find the demo version included on the Playback boxset (and the American Treasure release!) here: https://youtu.be/vkKPklG2QVE For the bootlef live version from January 21, 1997, click here: https://youtu.be/-U57BbIz3Ow The Tom Petty Project is a proud member of The Deep Dive Podcast Network, which you can find on Twitter: https://twitter.com/deepdivepodnetDon't forget to follow me on social media, like, subscribe, and please, leave a rating if you like the show:Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thetompettyprojectTwitter: https://twitter.com/TomPettyProjectInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/thetompettyproject/YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCt6BLRWuuAR43zHpNKIirOwAll music, including the theme song, provided by my very best friend Randy Woods. "There's nothing wrong with a solid album track. It's like the gravy at Christmas dinner. You wouldn't want it as the main course, but the meat would probably be a little dry without it. The Damage You've Done is a fairly unremarkable track in the Heartbreakers catalogue and it doesn't stand out much on this album, but it's a fun little number and again, is one of the best-sounding songs on the record sonically, at least for me.”Today's episode covers the third track from Let Me Up (I've Had Enough), The Damage You've DoneCheck out the song here: https://youtu.be/9wc4m0W7Xk4You can find the alternate version from The American Treasure release here: https://youtu.be/ytiLxKo4RjUIf you want to hear the link between this song and Bryan Adams' release, check out the video here; https://youtu.be/onn8x-qDrtgIf you are able to donate financially to humanitarian aid relief efforts in Ukraine, the Red Cross is coordinating a large-scale effort which you can contribute to by visiting their website here: https://donate.redcross.ca/page/100227/donate/1The Tom Petty Project is a proud member of The Deep Dive Podcast Network, which you can find on Twitter: https://twitter.com/deepdivepodnetDon't forget to follow me on social media, like, subscribe, and please, leave a rating if you like the show:Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thetompettyprojectTwitter: https://twitter.com/TomPettyProjectInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/thetompettyproject/YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCt6BLRWuuAR43zHpNKIirOwAll music, including the theme song, provided by my very best friend Randy Woods. "I suspect that it's the last verse that is appropriated by Confederate sympathizers and used out of context of the rest of the song. The last three lines of this verse though are sheer poetry of the very highest calibre. “I can still feel the eyes of those blue-bellied devil. Yeah when I'm walking ‘round at night through the concrete and metal” And all over the world, there are parochial attitudes like this that like to churn up simmering resentment and use it justify all manner of behaviours."Check out the song here: https://youtu.be/3jBi8XfKzk0 Here's the alternate version, from the "An American Treasure" compilation; https://youtu.be/uh8xy58dOV4 I talked about a live version fro 2014 and you can find that here; https://youtu.be/AmmZ0MQ5I78And lastly, if you want to hear Tom and Mike Campbell play with JJ Cale, you really should check this out! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-xp5cqDRDM8 If you are able to donate financially to humanitarian aid relief efforts in Ukraine, the Red Cross is coordinating a large-scale effort which you can contribute to by visiting their website here: https://donate.redcross.ca/page/100227/donate/1The Tom Petty Project is a proud member of The Deep Dive Podcast Network, which you can find on Twitter: https://twitter.com/deepdivepodnetDon't forget to follow me on social media, like, subscribe, and please, leave a rating if you like the show:Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thetompettyprojectTwitter: https://twitter.com/TomPettyProjectInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/thetompettyproject/YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCt6BLRWuuAR43zHpNKIirOwAll music, including the theme song, provided by my very best friend Randy Woods. The pawpaw is a North American native, growing wild in 26 States! But you wouldn't know it by seeing or tasting it. About the size of a small to medium-sized mango, with a custardy flesh that ranges from creamy white to pumpkin pie orange, you'd swear it's a tropical fruit. But, you'd be wrong, since it is, in fact, a temperate species. Despite its more mild climatic preference, it still boasts quintessential tropical flavor notes. Mango and papaya, pineapple and banana, caramel and some aroma we can only describe as a combination of nutmeg, cinnamon, and clove. Unlike so many fruits, it isn't acidic, rather just creamy like a pie filling, or flan. Which is why the tropical fruit family it belongs to is known as the custard apples, or Annonaceae. Up until recently, Daniel had only tried a few pawpaws, specimens mailed to us by listeners to the show. To taste more, our next step was obvious. We needed to head south. All the way to Frederick, Maryland to meet up with Michael Judd. Michael wrote an excellent little book on raising North America's largest fruit, called For The Love Of Pawpaws, and this month, the month of September, is prime pawpaw season! From the moment we arrived there, we were eating pawpaws constantly, as Michael kept a steady stream of them headed directly towards our mouths. Mango-like, orange-fleshed Susquehannas. Vanilla-custardy Shenandoahs, and the hopefully-able-to-grow-here-in-Maine PA Golden, which is a nice, mild, balance of the other two. Michael is a character like no other. A fun-loving, zany plant person, whose eclectic personality is rivaled only by his hat collection and perhaps by the fruit for which he is a fervent ambassador. He resides in a beautiful, round, straw-bail-construction home with his lovely family, beside a productive food forest with a distinguished pawpaw patch. He served us more than just raw pawpaws, we had pawpaw ice cream, pawpaw cornbread, and pawpaw pudding too. And not just our bellies, he satiated our minds too, with plenty of pawpaw facts and legends, and we came home with pockets full of pawpaw seeds and a couple of flats of very ripe fruits, whose aromatic bouquet kept us alert through the 10-hour drive north. Now that Daniel is home, and has fed his wife and friends some pawpaws too, he's wishing we had patches of them here in Maine. But, at least he has a couple dozen in the freezer, which he's been pulling out, peeling, and pulping for my morning smoothie. That'll have to do until he grows some plants of his own and figures out how to get them to fruit here in zone 5A! Michael is a blast to be around. If you ever get the chance to work with him or manage to secure a ticket to his quick-to-sell-out pawpaw festival, we highly recommend you do so. If a pawpaw was ever transfigured into flesh, it might just resemble Michael Judd. Oh, one last thing, our visit with Michael will be featured in an episode of Season 3 of the WildFed TV show on Outdoor Channel so stay tuned for that! We'll start airing around the beginning of 2023. In the meantime, if you are hearing this in September and you're in pawpaw country, make it a point to track some down. Either wild, by foraging your local creek and river banks, or by finding a cultivator near you. Also, you can get on the pre-order list on Foraged.Market — they'll start shipping as soon as Ohio's commercial harvest begins. Don't wait because it's a limited supply! They've got a great landing page for all things pawpaw at Foraged.Market/Pawpaws. You owe it to yourself to taste this American Treasure! Happy Moon Landing anniversary! Or was that hoax? Lazlo and his roundtable of wizards will decide. *We've already given our pitch for American Treasure status which provides social and financial safeguards to former child stars. Now we've gotta figure something out for heroes. This guy in Indiana who ran into a burning house and saved a bunch of people should be set for life. The only question is, should we make him rich or just give him enough to survive? *When is it okay to push little kids out of the way for an autograph? Lazlo says never but Slimfast says always. *Doomscrolling!! Those Secret Service texts were finally handed over! Oops, I meant text. Europe is finally cooling down after a rather warm start to the week. A woman sues over a bad date but the judge isn't having it. *How To Hold Your Husband. Some advice never ages. *How do you punish a teenage son? You could ground him, take away his phone, or change his curfew but if you really want to get your message across, tell him you don't love him anymore. Worked for Slimfast's parents. *Thanks for listening to the podcast. If you want to listen to that, you can find it here: https://youtu.be/gnPH766ZP00I also mentioned a couple of times similarities that I hear between Mike's guitar tone and playing and that of Ronnie Wood, the guitarist from the legendary Small Faces and the even more legendary Rolling Stones. During America's Revolutionary War, General Washington built a spy ring that helped produce the outcome we have come to know. Clandestine intelligence gathering, sneaky correspondence, and heroic feats of daring were daily occurrences for the Culper Spy Ring.Zach and Rafe discuss elements of the ring and their accomplishments, as they are told in Brian Kilmeade and Don Yaeger's 2013 book George Washington's Secret Six; The Spy Ring That Saved The American Revolution. The first part of a two-part series, this episode takes us from the start of the war up to the temptations of Benedict Arnold, a master strategist but a man hounded by one of Mankind's most basic flaws: the desire for prestige.A typical Bufnagle: the Podcast episode, Rafe talks too much while Zach derails the education with stories from A Knights Tale and American Treasure and with comparisons to Tolkien. Listeners should find this a quintessential Buf episode: serious educational but with just enough shenanigans to make you want to go look things up for yourself!
