Like many activists, Peter Egan found his cause by chance. When a labrador named Custard collapsed outside the Downton Abbey actor's house, his wife jumped into action, taking the animal to a vet, and eventually the family adopted the dog. For Egan, this moment opened his eyes to the crisis of surplus pets in the UK, and it served as his initiation into advocating for animal rights. Peter Egan joined host Jay Ruderman to discuss the great number of organizations and animal rights causes he supports, from Saving Suffering Strays, to Animals Asia, to Animal Equality UK. They discuss a campaign to protect stray animals in Turkey that Peter is involved with, the ways that animals care for their well being, and the many ways Peter's personal relationships with animals shape and international activism shape each other. David Neale has been the Director of Animals Asia Foundation since 2002. David shares with us how when he was 14, he saw chimpanzees used as photo props whilst in Majorca, Spain, and how it ignited his passion for animal welfare. Sabrina shares similar memories of seeing Africa Greys, snakes, and a Tiger. She also mentions apps where the public can record these animals to influence change. David says his study choices were limited, so studied Environmental Science and then a postgraduate in Conservation Biology. After graduating, David worked as an ecologist for a river restoration charity in England, which aimed to restore lost habitats. When David surveyed for European water voles (a species that declined due to pollution, habitat loss and the release of mink), he determined the mink would need to be culled. This introduces an animal welfare element. David did not want to contribute to this, so embarked on a trip to Asia and South America to determine an alternative career. Whilst travelling, he visited zoos and sanctuaries, reporting his observations to the Born Free Foundation. David shared with us a key moment in Vietnam, where he observed two caged bears, one of which was a cub. He learnt they were destined to be milked for bile at a bear farm. Horrified, he reported this to Born Free who referred him to the recently established Animals Asia Foundation by Jill Robinson. Through communications with Jill, David helped establish Animals Asia in the UK, spending approximately eight years giving talks to all manners of people. Concurrently, David wanted to contribute to the welfare of farmed animals beyond being a vegan, so he volunteered as a Political Coordinator for the British Hen Welfare Trust. This trust rehomes laying hens after they have stopped being economically viable. From here David, attended Asia for Animals, a conference of all organisations which occurs every two years to discuss relevant issues and increase collaborations, although this was rare between conferences. David wanted a more long-term collaboration between organisations so established Asia for Animals Coalition. It aims to allow the sharing of information to improve animal welfare. Within the coalition are species-specific working groups. David introduces us to his blogs on preventing future pandemics through altering the way livestock animals are managed and the consumption of animals both domestic and exotic to be more sustainable. He shares how the covid pandemic has highlighted this to the public. David continues by sharing his career progression through Animals Asia, by being more hands-on in China. Here he worked with the China Zoo Association to remove circuses within their businesses to improve animal welfare. This change occurred in 2011. Animals Asia then progressed to provide advice and knowledge to further improve welfare in Chinese zoos through workshops. David shares with us the education programme to instruct the public on the wild behaviour and needs of species and why scenarios such as bear farms are bad for the species. He then mentions their work with the Chinese veterinary medical association, educating their students on how their care can impact their welfare. Animals Asia invested in outside veterinary experts to teach in universities which have resulted in overall improvements. David then discusses the illegal wildlife trade in Vietnam and working with the Government to set up a sanctuary in Tam Dao National Park for formally farmed bears, and capacity building across centres to improve welfare and knowledge. David then talks about replacing elephant riding with ethical elephant tourism in Vietnam. This entails guided tours that follow the elephants within their habitat, this benefits all stakeholders including the elephants and creates more income. David concludes by telling us the story of a 60-year-old elephant, who was rescued by the team from her life of being used for rides. She lived four years within the reserve where she interacted with a wild male elephant and ventured outside the reserve. Jill Robinson first encountered a captive Moon Bear in 1993. The experience, which she recounts in our interview, changed her life. It also sparked the beginning of the end of the horrific bear bile industry. Moon Bears are Asian Black Bears. They are called Moon Bears in reference to the trademark white fur crescent that appears across their necks. In multiple countries across Asia, tens of thousands of Moon Bears (and some other species) are held captive in tiny cages for decades and subjected to routine, extremely painful procedures to extract bile from their gallbladders. The bile is used in traditional Asian medicines and touted for a host of ailments, including hangovers. As the founder and Chief Executive Officer of the animal welfare organization, Animals Asia, Jill has been especially successful in her mission to shut down bear farming in Vietnam. In partnership with the Vietnamese government, the industry has been winding down since 2017 and is now illegal. Soon, Animals Asia will break ground on a second rescue sanctuary in Vietnam and free hundreds of bears from a lifetime of unspeakable cruelty and suffering. This follows another rescue this summer when Animals Asia transported 101 Moon Bears 750 miles across China to a sanctuary in Chengdu. It was the largest bear rescue in history and the subject of the new short film, https://www.animalsasia.org/ (“Moon Bear Homecoming,”) narrated by American actor and activist James Cromwell. English-born Jill is the recipient of many prestigious international awards that recognize her service on behalf of our more-than-human animal kin. Dominic's villain this week is Cornwall's Carbis Bay Hotel and Charlie blasts irresponsible cat owners who allow their pets to decimate wildlife during the breeding season.  In '60 Second Sell' we flag up a petition asking for a 'no take' of Spider Crabs and highlight two blogs as well as discussing Buglife's new 'bug splat' app. Finally, we discuss our plans to open up the Off the Leash Podcasts website as a 'community bulletin board'. A story that is so inspiring, so actionable and so kind - Animals Asia is an organisation that is devoted to ending bear bile farming and improving the welfare of animals across Asia. Today, I speak to the founder and CEO of Animals Asia, Jill Robinson, who has been a pioneer of animal welfare in Asia since 1985 and she founded the organisation in 1998 five years after an encounter with a cage bear on a farm in southern China changed her life forever. And she talks about this today. Jill and I delve deep into the cruel and unfathomable world of bear bile farming. We cover the inception of Animals Asia, memorable bear saves, government news and why it's crucial this captive practice comes to an end and how we can all help.  Animals Asia is also working hard to build a third bear sanctuary by the end of this year so if you're able to help, you can donate or shop on their website.  Also join Animals Asia on their social pages for news and updates. “…I just remember walking around this room in total shock and then backing into a cage and feeling something touch my shoulder and realizing, ‘Oh my gosh, you know, I’ve come too close,’ and thinking I was going to be hurt. Then, as I turned around [I saw] what had touched me was the bears paw through the bars of the cage. She just had her paw there and was holding it out. And I did something ridiculously stupid. I took her paw, because it was there, reaching out and she just squeezed my fingers. That's all she did. She just rhythmically squeezed my fingers. And I just looked into her eyes and I just knew it was one of those amazing moments that you can hardly describe. Because you just know at that point, everything in your life is going to change. Well, indeed, that’s exactly what happened.” - Jill Robinson Jill Robinson has spent nearly 30 years of her life fighting to end bear bile farming, one of the world’s darkest industries that most people have never heard of. She is widely recognized as the world’s leading authority on bear bile farming and is the founder and CEO of Animals Asia, an organization that has been rescuing bears since 1994 and is devoted to ending the entire bear bile industry. They are one of the few organizations in the world that is close to reaching the goal that they originally set out to achieve.

Jill Robinson has been a pioneer of animal welfare in Asia since 1985, widely recognised as the world’s leading expert on the bear bile industry, having campaigned against it since 1993. UK born, Jill arrived in Hong Kong in 1985 and spent 12 years working for the International Fund for Animal Welfare. She founded “Dr Dog” in 1991, the first animal-therapy programme in Asia. More than 1,000 dogs have since qualified as "therapists", visiting hospitals, disabled centres, schools and elderly homes in cities across Asia. In 1993, a visit to a “bear farm” in China defined Jill’s future. Exposing the plight of endangered Asiatic black bears cruelly farmed for bile extraction, Jill embarked on a journey to end the practice. In 1998, she founded Animals Asia, an organisation devoted to ending bear bile farming in China and Vietnam and bring about long-term change for animals by promoting compassion and respect. Today, Animals Asia has rescued over 600 bears, caring for them at its award-winning bear sanctuaries in China and Vietnam, and has signed a formal agreement with the Vietnam government to end bear bile farming by 2022

Jill is the founder and CEO of the incredible non-profit organization Animals Asia. She heads Animals Asia's team of over 300 enthusiastic staff. Jill founded Animals Asia in 1998. This was five years after an encounter with a caged bear, on a farm in southern China, changed her life forever. Ever since, there has been no going back. Animals Asia is one of the only non-profits that is close to reaching the goal they set out to achieve - to end bear bile farms. This is an admirable achievement - only through intervention, education, and perseverance can one achieve the results Jill has. To date Animals Asia has saved over 600 bears, giving them a second chance at life and a life worth living. Jill has the only bear sanctuary in China, which in itself is an achievement, and has worked closely with the government of China to help these bears. She says we should not completely disregard & dismiss traditional Chinese medicine (which is where the bile is primarily used) - but that the medicinal benefits these medicines do have can be easily replaced by ingredients from plants, eliminating the need to harm these animals. Over the years she has seen a shift in attitude towards animals in China & the rest of Asia, When she started there were no animal nonprofits, now there are over 200. This is certainly a move in a positive direction. I had a great time talking to Jill, and I urge you to listen to her talk about a plan 30 years in the making. Success in all forms does not occur overnight, it takes time & perseverance to achieve one's goals, Jill is an excellent example of this exact thing Enjoy The Podcast! Being a photojournalist who sheds light on the massive ecological collapse happening all around us - to both our natural world and the animals that inhabit it - is no easy task. Armed with a camera, Paul uses his powerful images and thought-provoking language to show the world the injustices taking place against those that can't speak for themselves - the animals. We spoke about how Paul got his start as a photographer, and with time, how he made the switch into conservation photojournalism. We discussed the risks he faces, shooting in illegal underworlds, where anything can happen - and how he personally deals with the horrific things he has witnessed over the decades. Change doesn't happen overnight, but Paul's persistence to document the plight of animals is what reaches hearts and minds, and creates change - through educational content, conservation efforts, and enforced regulations. Our daily choices do matter, and affect the environment and the world around us. Instead of relying on our governments to take action to help our planet and the animals, we can try in our own ways to help conservation and animal relief efforts - the first step being our day to day choices as consumers. In November 2019 Lynda organised a webinar for 30 major donors as a virtual project visit, which she mentioned during my interview in Episode 13. She’s run three more events since then, and they are proving a crucial way to keep her supporters inspired during the pandemic, so Rob wanted to spend a whole episode to properly understand her approach - these ideas are now more relevant than ever to charities. In the interview, Lynda explains the strategy, how she helps her service delivery colleagues prepare to succeed, and several of the benefits to organising these events. Is a Bear Bile Market Necessary? by Isabel Cardenas

Extinctions in Near Time: Biodiversity Loss Since the Pleistocene

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 15, 2011 3:17

Hi everyone, my name is Isabel Cardenas and I’ll be talking about the market for bear bile and what it means to farmed bears, wild bears, and North American bears. In parts of Asia, drinking bear bile is a traditional remedy to cure intestinal and heart illnesses1. This has created an enormous market for fresh bear bile. Poachers have decimated the populations of Asiatic black and brown bears to satisfy the demand. As a result, bear farms emerged throughout Asia so that profiteers have a constant source. The market for bile has had extensive consequences for bears in farms, wild Asian bears, and now wild bears in North America. My name is Isabel Cardenas and I would like to tell you about how the demand for bear bile is threatening bears around the world. Today’s demand for bear bile is large enough to warrant the captivity of twelve thousand bears on farms in China, Vietnam, and Korea5. Typically, Asiatic black bears and brown bears are captive on these farms1. On bear farms, a tube extracts bile from the gallbladder twice a day through an open wound6. This is referred to as “milking” the bear. In addition to the pain and infection of the wound, these bears suffer from physical and behavioral abnormalities from the stress of being caged. This leads them to shatter their teeth on the cage bars or to try to bite their paws off6. Mother bears have become deranged when listening to the sound of distress of their infants; some have suffocated their young7. Bears are such symbols of power that it’s tragic to see them in such miserable conditions. Though bear farms were intended to allow wild bear populations to recover, they actually led to poaching5. Not only does the farmed bile stimulate the market but, because wild bile is believed to be most potent and is worth more, wild bears are still poached for their gallbladders1. The wild Asiatic black bears and brown bears are still in danger of being hunted and they are now in danger of extirpation4. Bear bile contains ursodeoxycholic acid, which reduces cholesterol absorption, dissolves gallstones, regulates heart rhythm, and serves as a remedy for other human illnesses3. However, bear bile isn’t the only bile that has ursodeoxycholic acid. Many mammals have this in their gallbladder and pharmaceutical companies harvest it through slaughterhouses of bovine, such as oxen or cows3. Additionally, there are sixty-five herbal alternatives to bear bile, such as coptis or rhubarb8, 9 There is no need for bear farms to exist, so why do they? Wild bear bile has been used as a traditional cure for a myriad of afflictions for 3000 years and Asia isn’t ready to give it up1. The market for bear parts is worth two billion dollars4. Bile is sold for as little as $500 per gram but vendors can garner up to fifty-five thousand dollars for a whole gallbladder1. North America has more individual bears than the rest of the world combined. Why is that relevant? The increasing rarity of wild bears in Asia has led to poaching in North America for bear parts. North America is seen as a goldmine for poachers. While a gallbladder can be sold for about thirty thousand dollars in Japan, the maximum fine for poaching in Alaska is only four thousand dollars1. Thus, the market incentive is extraordinarily high for poaching in North America. I contend that laws in North American and Asia have to be adjusted to protect the existing populations of bears from poaching and farming.
