It was when Nicola worked with her dad at the Liverpool fish markets as a teenager, she learned all about grit, hard work and having the courage to speak up for herself. She had no idea then these lessons would be the foundation of an extraordinary career.Nicola started out in journalism and went on to work at places like ITN and GMTV. But when her working life wasn't suiting her personal life – she created her own talent agency. Eventually she sold this – but carried on with working in the industry at James Grant Management.Over the years Nicola has worked with huge names like Ant and Dec, Claire Balding and Gabby Logan. But then she decided she'd have another next chapter and yes, she created another company. Now she runs her executive search firm, Ibison Media placing people in leadership roles in huge television and media companies all over the world. In this episode we discuss:How to overcome the nerves we all feel. What it's really like working with those superstars. How a chance (little bit drunken) conversation with Anthea Turner's sister, Wendy changed everything. What to do when your work life and personal life no longer match. What happened when Nicola was sent to look for a one-legged duck.Nicola believes so much comes down to being kind and supportive to others. She says everyone feels nervous, but sometimes we just have to take a deep breath and pick up the phone. To learn more about Nicola and her fabulous work you can find her here: https://ibisonmedia.com/And I'd love it if you kept in touch . For my ultimate episode of the season I go on a style journey with British luxury accessories designer Sophia Webster who is known for her fun, playful and feminine touches, not to mention her iconic butterflies. She has built a global brand in just over a decade brilliantly harnessing the power of social media to assist her on the journey.. her joyful creations have graced everyone from Beyonce and Madonna to Grayson Perry...  There really is a transformative magic in shoes and bags that Sophia understands so well.   The weekend before we met I did my research by immersing myself in her wonderful new book  “Oh My Gosh I Love Your Shoes!” … BTW how often have you said exactly that? The book is a beautiful, self-illustrated visual diary of her journey.   We discuss the sexiest heel height… her love of butterflies (actually hard-wired into her DNA)…buying her first pair of Buffalo boots (beloved by the Spice Girls at the time) and thinking that she “had made it now”… and hysterical stories of lost wedding dresses and then lost wedding shoes… not to mention unfortunate “Anthea Turner haircuts” …as she said, great on a grown woman but not quite as good on a child.   Like most women I know, I am a veritable shoe (and boot) lover so I hope you enjoy this conversation with one of the most talented young designers I have met…

Anthea Turner | How to Survive Divorce

Two Women Chatting

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 18, 2023 49:21

How to Age well- our last chat with Anthea Turner! Liz and Michelle are joined by presenter Anthea Turner to talk about divorce, including Anthea's own, very public personal experience.  They discuss how to deal with the rejection that comes with divorce and to put children at the forefront of every decision. Anthea suggests 'control your mouth' and never send toxic messages or emails.  Divorce is painful but there is a long time after when you may be attending birthdays, graduations and weddings when you need to be in the same place at the same time. Much of Anthea's advice is in her book How to Survive Divorce. Although divorce rates are actually decreasing for the first time in decades, it's still something that many women have to go through, particularly in mid-life once kids leave the nest. Liz, Michelle and Anthea discuss why this might be as well as the most common reasons cited for divorce, why it isn't always 50/50 when it comes to assets and also the implications and impact on others including children as well as the differences gender make in how we cope with divorce emotionally and in the longer-term. Our sponsor for this episode is Dr Elizabeth Hawkes, award-winning oculoplastic surgeon, eye expert and aesthetic surgeon.  www.drelizabethhawkes.com KEY TAKEAWAYS The 5 reasons cited for divorce are adultery, unreasonable behaviour, desertion, two years of separation with consent and five years of separation. Anthea Turner went through a high-profile divorce when she separated from Grant Bovey. They split after he cheated on her with a woman half her age in 2013. Mid-life, when children leave the home, can often trigger separation or divorce as well as any other changes in life such as moving, new jobs and even boredom! You have to look at your exit strategy and think about the impact it will have on the other side of the divorce. Research shows that witnessing high levels of parental conflict before during and after separation has a long-term impact on a child's welfare. It is clear that reducing parental conflict and focusing on the best interests of the children is the single most important thing a parent can do when separating. Try not to make decisions that are emotion-based, which of course is incredibly difficult but you have to think about the impact acting in anger will have on the rest of your life and those around you too. If you are bored with your life, divorce probably isn't the answer, you need to find ways to inject fun back into your life. Post-divorce, you can see the real impact a divorce has on those around you, it's not always easy to see this clearly whilst in the midst of it which is why Anthea gives true insight on the best way to handle it. Anthea wonders if the publicity of her divorce meant that she behaved will more decorum than she actually wanted to. She was always thinking about how things may be perceived. You don't have to behave like the guests on a reality show, if you and your ex can work at making things amicable it doesn't just make life for your families and friends better but you will find life post-divorce less stressful and happier too. As women, we can use divorce to be transformative and work on ourselves, the best thing we can do is to build our self-esteem and confidence. BEST MOMENTS  “Never send anything you aren't happy to see on the front page of the daily mail!”“There's all sorts of interconnecting parts to a divorce”“The time after the divorce is for the rest of your life”“Your softness is not weakness, it's a strength” “Life gets boring, you shouldn't' divorce your partner because of it”“Sometimes fame works against you, sometimes it works for you”“Confidence is the key to life” If you enjoyed this episode, please rate, and review it on your podcast platform. Speaking of which, Luke Skywalker popped in to see Chris this week along with Rian Johnson to talk anecdotes and impressions. Pippa's wildest dreams came true as she got to attend an exclusive Sylvanian Families fashion event where she met the very helpful (and fish obsessed) Aaron. This week we make our first foray into Mid Morning Matters, in front of an intimate live audience at Warner Music HQ; as part of their comedy events series. Sadly Adam didn't make it past Chiswick Roundabout for this recording, so you're left in the capable hands of Tom, Tom and Nick.We try to answer the big questions - but don't necessarily succeed - including: why was Anthea Turner the most hated woman in Britain? Is Bill Oddie actually okay? Is radio beamed down from space? And, most disturbingly, which muppets are we going to kill? This is great banter. It really is.
