(AURN News) — As Americans prepare to choose between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump on Tuesday, Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick, who represents Florida's 20th Congressional District, is making a final push to mobilize voters across Florida's diverse communities. "No one can afford to sit this one out," Cherfilus-McCormick discussed the stakes in an interview with AURN News. "We've seen what Project 2025 is really all about... rolling back Medicaid and Medicare Social Security, which would totally devastate our seniors," she said. The Democratic congresswoman emphasized Harris's economic proposals, particularly those addressing cost-of-living concerns. "She has a robust economic plan that deals with some of the issues that we're facing, even when it comes to grocery price gouging, when it comes to housing, building over 3 million new houses and even having the first-time down payment program giving $25,000 for new homeowners," she commented. “These are all programs that are desperately needed at this moment, and we see so many people who are actually pushing and calling for a real government that sees the people for who they are and gives us a sense of hope and ensures that everyone has the opportunity to actually have a chance at thriving in the society.” Early voting data shows varying turnout across the state's metropolitan areas. "Palm Beach County has had a great turnout. Broward County is number two," Cherfilus-McCormick reported, while expressing concern about participation in other regions. "The areas where we really need to turn out and make sure everyone's voice is heard is in Jacksonville and Duval County." The congresswoman also noted increased political engagement within Florida's Haitian-American community. “I remember at the beginning of the election, some people weren't sure who they were voting for, because at one point, Trump did come down and try to cater towards the Haitian community. But I think what was a blessing and a curse was, the comments were a curse, but it ended up being a blessing, because right now, everyone seems to be on the same page of what needs to happen, which is to get out and vote for Kamala Harris,” she told AURN News. “We've been going to several churches and having everyone go out to vote immediately after service. We've had a series of phone banking and we've been calling several people also to make sure they're turning in their ballots and they're turning out to vote, but we've seen more and more people turning out to vote in this election, so we're very excited about that.” Describing the candidates' closing arguments, Cherfilus-McCormick said, "What's been very clear about Kamala's closing argument has been one of compassion and unity and really seeing Americans for who they are and the strength of our nation... Whereas on the other hand, we keep hearing about Donald Trump and his list of people who he's going to retaliate against." As Election Day lies just days away, Trump still maintains leads in most battleground states, though polling also shows a tight race nationally. Learn more about your ad choices. In this episode of Hollywood Live, Tanya Hart discusses the growing political momentum as superstar Bad Bunny and Jennifer Lopez publicly throw their support behind Vice President Kamala Harris. With Bad Bunny's vast influence, his endorsement could significantly boost Harris' campaign among Latino voters. Tanya also highlights the sixth annual Micheaux Film Festival in Culver City, which is generating buzz with incredible projects. A standout screening was One of Them Days, an Issa Rae production starring Keke Palmer and SZA, with an all-star cast including LaRoyce Hawkins, Janelle James, Maude Apatow, and Katt Williams. Former President Donald Trump is expected to speak today at noon at the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) annual convention -- a move that has sparked much backlash and outrage. AURN spoke with National Newspaper Publishers Association President Dr. Benjamin Chavis, who is asking the organization to rescind the invite. This morning on the radio he had this to say: "This is an affront to Black America. I think this is not about journalism, and this is not about equivalency, because there is no equivalency between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump. I understand Vice President Harris won't be able to make it. But they should never extended an invitation to Donald Trump in the first place. And the way they set up the panel it's a Fox News-controlled panel." ABC's Rachel Scott and Semafor's Kadia Goba will be moderators for the discussion alongside Fox News' Harris Faulkner, but many are calling for the event to be canceled and for the president of NABJ to step down from his position. Protests are happening outside, but as of now, the show still goes on. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
(AURN News) — Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee, a long-serving Democrat from Texas's 18th Congressional District, has died, according to a statement released by her family on Friday. Jackson Lee, known for her passionate advocacy on issues of racial justice, criminal justice reform, and human rights, served in Congress for over 30 years. In an interview with AURN News, her former Deputy Chief of Staff, Shashrina Thomas, described her as "the conscience of the Congress" who acted daily as "an advocate for the underserved constituents of Houston's historic Third Ward, and all those similarly situated across the nation." “The Congresswoman represented her family and her country proudly passionately and effectively, she fought the good fight. As it is written in 2nd Timothy, she finished the race, but most importantly, she maintained the faith in God,” Thomas said. “I'm grateful to her and her family, for sharing her with the world, for fighting the fight in Congress, and standing strong every moment, to make sure women's rights were on the table… human rights were on the table, and that there was a fair social and criminal justice system, across the board, specifically, for African American people,” she added. Thomas also highlighted Jackson Lee's legislative accomplishments, stating, "She was directly responsible for crafting more than 200 pieces of legislation, 184 of which became law." Among her notable achievements were helping to establish Juneteenth as a federal holiday and reauthorizing the Violence Against Women Act. "The congresswoman deserves our gratitude for a life of public service and dedication to exactly that: the values of women's rights, fairness, equality, and justice," Thomas said. First elected in 1994, Jackson Lee was particularly noted for her focus on issues affecting women and children. Thomas recalled how the congresswoman ensured that "women and children were not forgotten" in policy discussions, especially regarding public service and first responders. Jackson Lee also played a significant role in healthcare legislation. Thomas noted her position as "the lead policy negotiator for the Affordable Care Act," which included provisions to expand access to healthcare for underserved communities. “Congressman Louis Stokes gave me my wings to fly. The Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, taught me how to fly,” Thomas told AURN News. The statement from Jackson Lee's family emphasized her impact both as a public servant and as a beloved wife, sister, mother, and grandmother. They noted that while she will be deeply missed, "her legacy will continue to inspire all who believe in freedom, justice, and democracy." Funeral arrangements are pending. Personal Reflection As a journalist, I rarely include personal experiences in my reporting. However, Congresswoman Jackson Lee's passing compels me to share my interactions with her over the years. I first met her in 2013 while working as a Communications Director on Capitol Hill. From that time until her passing, she consistently supported me as a person, a journalist, and a Black man in America. She was a staunch advocate for American Urban Radio Networks (AURN), always making time to address Black America through our platform. During our interviews, she frequently emphasized the crucial role of AURN News in covering issues facing the Black community that are often overlooked by mainstream media. Our last public interaction was in September 2023 at the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation's Annual Legislative Conference, where I moderated an event she hosted. Even then, she spoke passionately about the importance of Black media in our country and expressed gratitude to AURN and me personally. Her unwavering support for Black journalists and media outlets underscored her commitment to ensuring diverse voices were heard in the national political conversations. Today is July Fourth, Independence Day, coming at a time when many feel like democracy has been upended. This Fourth of July also comes just two days after the 60th anniversary of the Civil Rights Act being passed and the observance of the 119th birthday of the first Black Supreme Court Justice, Thurgood Marshall. AURN's Ebony McMorris spoke with Rev. Al Sharpton about how for Black America, this day is a little different. "The country was not only settled with but embraced slavery before they even embraced the Bill of Rights or Constitution. And so we need to understand that is that July Fourth was never our holiday because we were enslaved in servitude when they met in Philadelphia. Our days came later, and we're yet to be where we ought to be," said Sharpton. He went on to talk about the great strides Americans have made but insisted that we must keep pushing for democracy. "The Barnes Bunch" premiered April 19 on WE TV and is already gaining a large audience. The new series follows NBA champion and successful podcaster, Matt Barnes, alongside his fiancée, model and reality personality, Anansa Sims. They are truly the modern blended family with six children between two of them, but both Matt and Anansa have had their share of drama. So I asked, why do a reality show? "I think the trust in the producing partners, Datari Turner, someone that Anansa has known since she was a teenager, Jamie Foxx and I have been good friends for a handful of years. So just having that trust, but then also, you know, being people who watch TV, wanting to put a perception of a strong Black family out there, and you don't get that too often, particularly in the reality world. So I think we wanted to show people that it does exist. We wanted to show people that it is real, not perfect, but real. Blended families are the new norm. And I think we've mastered the blended family gang with all six of our kids. So for all those reasons, that's why we wanted to jump into this space together," Barnes said. You can watch the entire video interview with Matt and Anansa on AURN's YouTube. You don't want to miss it. And don't forget to check out the show on WE TV or All Black Network. It airs on Friday. Yep, looks like she's up next for what has become the money train. Sharpe's Katt Williams interview on his Club Shay Shay podcast on YouTube reportedly has netted over $600,000 so far. So I guess everybody's going to try to be on there. Anyway, we can always count on Mo'Nique to call out a few folks as well, so I am so sure this is going to be interesting. Jonathan Major's sentencing hearing has been delayed The case was postponed by the slew of post-conviction motions filed by his lawyers at the start of his misdemeanor trial. Now, the judge told him he could face up to a year behind bars for charges that related to an alleged fight between him and his former girlfriend, Grace Jabbari. This, of course, happened in New York City last March. In a split verdict in December, Majors was found guilty of misdemeanor assault in the third degree, recklessly causing physical injury, as well as harassment in the second degree. I just hope the judge isn't too harsh. Hey, at this point, losing what was a stellar career is rough enough. The 66th Grammys will definitely go down as ladies' night, with women winning literally all of the most important awards, including Song of the Year and Album of the Year. But can I shout out to AURN's own Tye Tribbett, whose album, "All Things New (Live In Orlando)," took home the award for Best Gospel Album? And yep, we hooped it up on the red carpet. Okay, how is it that America's most important and precious folk singer Joni Mitchell had to wait until she was 80 years old before being invited to sing at the Grammys? What was up with that? She was fabulous. And then there was the sizzling performance by the night's most nominated singer, SZA. Even Tracy Chapman and Billy Joel showed up and showed out after being gone from the business for decades. By the way, Tracy's "Fast Car" is once again zooming up the charts. The 1988 hit is currently number one on the iTunes list of top songs as a result of that performance last night. Now, African music has been added as a new category for the Recording Academy. And Nigeria's Burna Boy oozed charisma as he ran through a medley with rapper 21 Savage and R&B's Chanteuse Brandy. The in-memoriam segment, which was 16 minutes long, was one of the most entertaining and heartfelt parts of the show. Stevie Wonder and the late Tony Bennett kicked it off with an actual duet they had recorded earlier. Fantasia Barrino, who auditioned for American Idol with Tina Turner's "Proud Mary," closed out the in-memoriam segment with an electrifying spin on the song. And Jay-Z did get a bit political while accepting his Dr. Dre Global Impact Award, as he called out the Academy for not ever giving his wife the Album of the Year. There were just so many good moments, but you know what? There were a lot of things you did not see, but you can see them right here at @aurnonline and at AURN's YouTube channel. Because we were backstage and on the red carpet. Check out some of the interviews you probably won't see anywhere else but right here. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Bessie Coleman was born on January 26, 1892. She achieved historic milestones as the first African-American woman to obtain both a pilot's license and an international aviation license. At the age of 18, Coleman utilized her savings to attend the Oklahoma Colored Agricultural and Normal University, completing one term before financial constraints forced her to return home. In 1915, she relocated to Chicago, working as a manicurist and absorbing tales from World War I pilots. Driven by a determination to fly, she journeyed to Paris, where she earned the distinction of being the first African-American woman with an international aviation license and the world's inaugural female aviation pilot. The PBS special promises an intimate look into his journey and contributions to the arts. Jackson has served AURN News since 2015, previously covering the White House as a pool reporter and correspondent. The special, produced by public media station KERA, showcases Jackson's conversations with Blanchard that explore the depth of his artistry. “I am so grateful to KERA for this opportunity and I was honored when they asked me to do this earlier this year. To have an opportunity to honor Black excellence through Blanchard's work and the performances that are seen is one of the highlights of my career. This national PBS special is a must-see and shows why we need more programs highlighting Black excellence and Black trailblazers like Terence Blanchard on television. KERA and its leadership should be commended for this project and their commitment to allowing Black voices to be heard,” Jackson said. "Terence Blanchard in Dallas" is not just a tribute to a musical icon; it is a testament to the power of representation and the importance of recognizing Black excellence in the arts. In 1971, she was named Pittsburgh's first African American consumer affairs investigative reporter for NBC/ WPXI Television. She was then hired as news and public affairs director for Sheridan Broadcasting in 1975, and hosted a talk show on Sheridan's flagship station, WAMO. In 1977, Smith became the director of consumer affairs, as well as energy coordinator of her county in Pennsylvania. That same year, she moved her radio show to KDKA, where she also hosted a television show called Vibrations. Smith then became a radio host for Miami's WGBS (now WNMS) in 1979, and Orlando's WKIS in 1985. In the first episode of the AURN podcast, artist and tech entrepreneur Mic King shares his musical journey, his recent project with Musiq Soulchild, as well as the intersection between music, technology and social media. President Biden traveled to Buffalo, New York to talk with the families that lost their loved ones due to the massacre that took place over the weekend. The shooter said he committed the violent act because he felt like whites were being replaced by minorities. AURN's Ebony McMorris spoke with leading intellectual scholar and author Dr. Cornel West about his reaction to the tragedy. "I thought of the last speech of the great Malcolm X in Rochester, New York, February 16th, 1965. When he said that Black people are not just victims of a racist order, but Black people are prisoners of war. There's been a war going on for 400 years, from slave ship to slave auction to plantation to lynching tree to mass incarceration," said West. "And so in that sense, I wasn't surprised. You know, I mean, as a Christian, I'm never surprised by evil. I'm never paralyzed by despair. I have to fortify myself. I got to get ready and put on my armor. And so we get another manifestation of this war that's been going on. It's psychic war, it's spiritual war, it's social wars, economic war, and it's physical war. It could be Emanuel Church. It could be Buffalo, New York. It goes on and on and on." Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
