Endurance News: Making swimming pools safer by reducing chlorine disinfection byproducts Swimming in indoor or outdoor pools is a healthy form of exercise and recreation for many people. However, studies have linked compounds that arise from chlorine disinfection of the pools to respiratory problems, including asthma, in avid swimmers. Now, researchers reporting in ACS' Environmental Science & Technology have found that using a complementary form of disinfection, known as copper-silver ionization (CSI), can decrease disinfection byproducts and cell toxicity of chlorinated swimming pool water. Disinfecting swimming pool water is necessary to inactivate harmful pathogens. Although an effective disinfectant, chlorine can react with organic matter and compounds introduced by swimmers, such as those in sweat, urine, sunscreens and cosmetics, to produce disinfection byproducts (DBPs). Epidemiological studies have linked DBPs to health problems, including respiratory issues, bladder cancer, and pregnancy and birth complications. One way to reduce the amount of added chlorine is through the use of complementary disinfection strategies, such as CSI, which involves generating antimicrobial copper and silver ions by electrolysis. Susan Richardson and colleagues wondered whether using CSI along with reduced chlorine levels could disinfect pool water while also reducing DBP formation and toxicity. To find out, the researchers collected water samples from two pools treated with CSI and chlorine -- one outdoor and one indoor. They detected 71 DBPs, some of which were quantified for the first time in pools. In experiments with mammalian cells in the lab, the team found that the indoor pool samples were more toxic to cells than the outdoor samples, likely because outdoor DBPs can volatilize in the open air or degrade with sunlight over time. In indoor pool water, the lowest levels of DBP formation and toxicity were observed when the lowest amount of chlorine was used in combination with CSI. To control for factors such as number of swimmers, temperature and pH, the researchers also conducted experiments in simulated pools with a solution added that mimics human body fluids, and they observed similar results. These data suggest that using CSI with lower amounts of chlorine could be a way to make swimming safer, the researchers say. After all I am not known as a bike racer or a race promoter or race director. Those have been the typical titles of most board members. I am more known, athletically at least, as a triathlete—hopefully professionally more known as the owner/publisher of 303Endurance—which owns 303Cycling.com and 303Triathlon.com and the 303Endurance Podcast. So I am not your typical board member. But that’s precisely why I wanted to join the team. The current board has a lot of talent—on and off the bike. They care about cycling first and foremost. They care about racing too. They, like me want to do everything possible to foster the best cycling culture in the country. I met BRAC President Andy Johnson about a year ago and we shared a beer on my porch and brainstormed ideas on how we could create an environment of more inclusion and getting more people to explore racing or doing group bike events and rides. We talked about ways BRAC could provide more value to cycling. I then interviewed Executive Director Shawn Ferrel and learned more about him and it was clear these guys love bikes and the lifestyle that goes with them, just like I do. Endurance News: UCI to ban forearms time-trial position on road bikes First the super tuck, and now the popular breakaway position get the ax from the UCI, starting April 1. In a memorandum issued on February 8, the UCI indicated it will ban riders from racing with their forearms on their handlebars, in a time-trial like position, when on a road bike. Last week, the UCI indicated it would begin to enforce the rule prohibiting riders from the ‘super tuck’ descending position, where a rider sits on the top tube and curls into a tight position on a downhill. The news was greeted with mixed feelings, and VeloNews debated the merits of the rule and the UCI’s renewed interest in enforcing it. Both rules will start being enforced — and this is apparently not a joke — on April 1. Diversity in US cycling: How inclusion is being 'built from the ground up' During Black History Month, we check in with the national federation about its new grant programme. In 2020, the Black Lives Matter movement and the mass protests across the country highlighted the vast racial inequalities in the United States. It also forced the country's cycling federation to look closer at the lack of diversity in the sport and make plans to make cycling more inclusive. "We are committed to finding ways to make cycling look more like the population of the United States but we're a long way from that," CEO Rob De Martini said at the time. What's New in the 303: Jen Barbour of Team Evergreen and Triple Bypass Shares What She Loves About it and What's New If you have ever met Jen Barbour, the Executive Director of Team Evergreen, who puts on the annual Triple Bypass, you have felt her passion for cycling and equal compassion for people. In an organization who exists to raise money for local charities while riding bikes, she is the perfect fit. That passion punches a big energy punch too, and like the way she rides a bike, her efforts are relentless and enduring. She has been swamped this year with the recent acquisitions of the Bailey Hundo, and Beti Bike Bash. Then add in the new Floyd Hill Sessions Series (Mtb weekly timed enduro series) and Co2ut Gravel Ride along with all the COVID challenges and working on the Triple Bypass and Bob Cook Mt. Evans Hill Climb, Jen is, well, buried. We managed to sneak a few minutes of her time and ask a few questions about the Triple Bypass and Team Evergreen. Vulnerable Wheat Ridge/CU Grad Deb Conley Overcoming Major Adversity On Way to the Hall of Fame Deb Conley started running for the first time the summer before attending the University of Colorado at Boulder. She ran just to run with a new boyfriend. Like three miles. A couple of months later she walked on to CU’s cross country team and has been running ever since. And just recently, she was inducted into the Colorado Running Hall of Fame. Wow. She never played sports growing up, never ran, never did anything but work and go to school. In this video interview, Deb expresses a surprised happiness after being selected for the Colorado Running Hall of Fame. But she also shares something vulnerable; how running in college was the first time she ever experienced feeling truly happy. What's not really discussed, is the rocky and almost impossible path she took to get here. Almost all athletes dream of competing at the Olympics. It is the event of a lifetime where all the years of hard work culminate for these athletes, representing not only their team but also their country. Barry Siff is passionate about making the USA Team Handball qualify for the Olympics since it last went to the 1988 Seoul Olympics. Sharing his journey from then to now, he joins host, Robert "Fireman Rob" Verhelst to talk about how he went from the food industry to creating a whole endurance sports business, and then transitioning to become the CEO of the USA Team Handball. He shares the lessons he learned along the way while giving us a peek into the world of these athletes. How tough is it for them to keep that peak performance? What does it take to compete in the Olympics? Barry answers these questions and more, inspiring us with that athletic spirit to commit all out to our passions. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app
Barry Siff, CEO at USA Team Handball and former President of UA Triathlon, has much to share about leadership from the world of sport, business, and nonprofits. Barry talks about how he became a Senior VP at 25, retired at the age of 42, and received both a BS and Masters without graduating high school. He also discusses what it takes for people to dream big, and how to see challenges as opportunities. ~~~~~ ~~~~~ The Leadership Podcast is proud to announce a new initiative with thoughtLEADERS to provide very short podcasts called “chalk talks.” They’re “bitesize” hacks on common (but challenging) leadership issues. You can only access the Chalk Talks by subscribing to our mailing list at The Leadership Podcast. ~~~~~ ~~~~~ Key Takeaways [2:53] Barry retired in 1998 from a Senior VP position at a $7 billion dollar food company. He was only 42, and then decided he wanted to be involved with sports, which led him to the Team USA Handball organization. [4:07] Barry is quite the endurance athlete. He has run over 60 marathons, the Leadville Trail 100 Mile Run, Expedition Races all over the world and 11 IRONMANs. [6:52] Staying fit helps with stamina, mental clarity, and energy. Barry sees similar lessons in athletics as business, including the need for leaders to overcome obstacles, and do what’s necessary to get the job done. [9:09] While the business world mainly focuses on P&L and shareholder values, USA Triathlon is a non profit that also focuses on both the cause and the members. [20:03] Great leaders know that asking for help empowers others and gives them meaning. [21:13] People dream big when they have passion. [23:06] We can retrain our mindset to see challenges as opportunities for learning and growth. [31:31] The little things, such as intently listening and asking the right questions, really make a difference in leadership. [35:39] Barry describes Handball as water polo played on a basketball court, and it is an extremely fast and physical game. It is currently very popular in many countries, and projects that it also will be a commonly known sport soon in the United States, and also a participant in the Paris Olympics in 2024. Our guest this week is Doctor Kirk Parsley. He is a sleep specialist and has been treating Navy Seals, Special Ops, First Responders, and yes - endurance athletes, with sleep related ailments or performance issues. If you don't get 8 hours of sleep as a non-athlete and as much as 10 for ultra-runners, you will want to know what you could be doing to your performance and health. Thanks to last week's guest, ultra-runner and coach Don Reichelt. Don shared his preparation and training for Badwater 135. We also talked about how he helps other athletes train for that distance. We will be watching his race closely and look forward to seeing his result. My sense is, we are going to be impressed! Discussion Teasers: Reactions to the interview and some of our take-aways When we last reported we were still in Lake Havasu. Before leaving Lake Havasu, we had a pretty interesting run in the desert and tested our navigation skills. We have a great report on our trip to Tucson, dinner with Alain Lambert and Barry Siff, and the ride with Alain on Mt. Lemmon. Time management tips when you are trying to fit all the hours of training required for long-distance racing Interview Setup: Kirk Parsley served as an Undersea Medical Officer at Naval Special Warfare Group One from June 2009 to January 2013. While there, he led the development and supervised the group's first Sports Medicine Rehabilitation center. He is a former SEAL, and received his Medical Degree from Bethesda, Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences (USUHS) in 2004. He interned in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Balboa Naval Hospital San Diego in 2005 and subsequently completed a Navy residency in Hyperbarics and Diving Medicine in 2006. Doctor Parsley has been a member of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine since 2006 and served as Naval Special Warfare's expert on Sleep Medicine. In addition he is certified in hormonal modulation (Age-Management Medicine). After leaving the Navy he went into concierge medicine and consulting. He continues to consult for multiple corporations, and professional athletes/teams. Doctor Parsley lectures worldwide on sleep, wellness, and hormonal optimization and is currently completing a book on sleep and health optimization. His philosophy for wellness is simple; in order to optimize our health and get the most out of our bodies and minds, we must live more closely to the way we evolved as a species. He believes that many diseases and disorders that we accept as “inevitable” in modern society are unnecessary complications of poor sleeping habits, living in a toxic environment, eating foods we were not designed to digest, and allowing stress to overwhelm us. His passion is to help his patients and clients achieve the highest quality of life possible, and realize their health, performance, and longevity goals. Dr. Parsley spends as much of his spare time as possible with his three beautiful children (Hayden, Cole, and Harper). He has been a competitive athlete his entire life, and enjoys nearly all outdoor activities and sports. Interview debrief: Oura Ring I was naïve about sleep aids. How common do you think the understanding of using Ambien, Zolpidem or other sleep aids or any chemical that doesn't naturally occur in food could impair your ability to get to metabolic sleep? Distinguishing drugs from supplements Tryptophan becomes 5htp. Becomes serotonin. Saratonin becomes melatonin. Ironman - Science of Sleep Article inadequate sleep has an adverse effect on glucose metabolism. A study at the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine showed that after a single week of sleep restriction in young healthy male athletes, glucose levels were altered and led to a rapid deterioration of bodily functions. The authors compared the body's diminished ability to handle glucose to aging effects seen in the elderly. We also need sleep to produce HGH, or human growth hormone, the substance critical to post-exercise tissue repair that's manufactured by the pituitary gland. In short, sleep is required to speed our recovery from training sessions and and racing. When sleep deprived, athletes commonly complain that a race or workout felt harder than expected. What about the impact to fat metabolism with just 2 hours less sleep? What do you think that does to race performance for athletes who don't get 7-9 hours of sleep prior to an Ironman? Insulin sensitivity drops 30% with 2 hours less sleep. It was also a little scary to hear how much lack of sleep can lead to issues like ADD, depression, all psychiatric diagnosis are precursory by lack of sleep Lake Havasu and Tucson Trip: Trashcan Lid run https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/2564650099 dinner with Alain Lambert and Barry Siff, and the ride with Alain on Mt. Lemmon https://www.hauteroute.org/ https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/2566311987 Time Management Tip: In my weekly check-in with Brady we were discussing the topic of how to manage your training schedule Training for Iron-distance is one of those "big rock priorities" - you need to do the training, but you also have other priorities like work, family, finances, etc. One thing that Brady does to plan ahead and keep organized is he knows what training he has each day of the week, so he lays out his clothes for each workout. I'm sure there may be some adjustments if the weather forecast changes, but it's a great way to avoid unwanted surprises. What things do you guys do to stay organized or manage your time? He coached U23 female athletes to fourth- and ninth-place finishes at the ITU U23 World Championships, as well as a third-place finish at the ITU U23 CAMTRI American Championships. PEAK Multisport, the USA Triathlon High Performance Team Axford directs and coaches in Colorado Springs, was ranked 10th in the U.S. at the end of the season. Interview Ken Axford Host Discussion Topics How to Find The Best Indoor Training Setup For You - This article is on TrainingPeaks and authored by Matthias Knossalla who is a professional triathlete with multiple podium positions at IRONMAN® 70.3 & Challenge® events. He is also the founder and CEO of the German coaching network Trivolution-Training where he coaches professional and age group athletes from all parts of the world. The first step in indoor training is riding your own bike indoors at home. To do that you only need a cheap indoor trainer and perhaps a TV or music to make it a little bit more entertaining. One of the major benefits is that you have the possibility to ride on your own bike and that you will get used to riding the in aero bars and in your optimal aero position. Change Bike Tires Like a Beast - Billy Edwards wrote in- "Since I learned about getting the bead tucked into the bottom of the rim I have never met a tire I can't mount. I even was teaching the top USAC guru this summer and his mind was blown. I have spent HOURS!!!!! dealing with tough to mount tires. I have cut my hands on the spokes or the levers. If you are out on the road, use this technique and wow your friends with your amazing strength...granted it is technique and not strength at all- sound familiar (swimming!!!). TrainingPeaks Article "Nordic Skiing 101 For the Triathlete or Cyclist" - Competitive Nordic skiers are known as the fittest people on earth. This designation comes from scientific testing that demonstrates Nordic skiers have the highest VO2 max, which is the amount of oxygen the human body can take in and utilize per minute. Outside of genetics, the sport itself develops VO2 max through the requirements of movement and engagement of the whole body. Arms, legs and core are all essential, and when combined with proper technique, Nordic skiing can generate some incredible speed and performance gains. If there is one name that is synonymous with triathlon it’s Barry Siff. An avid triathlete since 1986, Team Timex athlete, current USA Triathlon President and member of the Executive Board for both the International Triathlon Union and the American Triathlon Confederation, Barry is living a life dedicated to the sport of triathlon. His experience as an athlete and race director, well known for the iconic Boulder Peak Triathlon, allows him to bring a multi-faceted perspective to the organizations he is serving. In today’s conversation you will get a sneak peak into the up and coming triathlon stars (can you say Gwen Jorgensen’s of the future) and why it’s so important to support our multi-sport youth athletes. Barry explains how the money from our USAT memberships are allocated. A fee that many of us begrudgingly pay once a year and often seen as an obstacle to completing our USAT sanctioned race registrations. Barry says he gets a lot of crap on social media about where the membership dues go and he clears that up today. Frankly, USAT is an organization that just wants to grow the sport and continue to keep our country in the forefront of high performance. This year alone our country won both the men and women divisions at the Juniors Grand Final in Cozumel. This is the first time in 20 years that this has been done by one country. The US is strong right now and our programs are top notch. We brought home gold on the women’s side this year in Rio after not medaling since 2004 when Susan Williams brought home a bronze medal. Barry shares his motivation for getting involved with USAT, a move that he never thought would end up where he is today in the organization. But if you know Barry then you know that he can’t do anything half heartedly. When he and wife Jodee were running 5430 Sports in Boulder, Colorado they were on 24/7 for years. Barry shares his wisdom on what it takes to be a great race director which, in his case, led to a very successful race company which he sold to Ironman in 2009. It was great to reconnect with Barry after several years. He and Jodee have since moved away from Boulder to Tuscon where we caught up with him at their beautiful home. We do a good bit of reminiscing about the good ole’days in Boulder and definitely get into some name dropping but the truth is, you can’t live in Boulder and not have run ins with the who’s who of triathlon especially when you are Barry Siff. It was a joy to chat with such an esteemed member of the multi-sport community and know that with people like Barry at the helm, our sport is in caring hands.

1. Vibram Five Finger Shoes 2. Intensity factor for different distances If you use a power meter and know your functional threshold power (FTP), you can use the following intensity factor guide for your racing. An intensity factor of .70 means your should be racing at 70% of your FTP. These numbers are taken from Joe Friel's Power Meter Handbook page 73. Ironman age group .60-.70 Ironman elite .70-.79 Half ironman age group .70-.79 Half ironman elite .80-.89 Olympic and sprint triathlon .90-1.04 3. How to train on a tight schedule. 4. Heat Acclimation From Journal of Applied Physiology in October of 2010. Twelve trained cyclist were studied vs a control group of 8 cyclist. They underwent VO2 max and lactate threshold tests before and after the 10 day study. The test group completed 10 cycling workouts at 40 Celsius/104 Farenheit totaling 1.5 hours. The test group trained at 13 Celsius/55 Farenheit because this is thought to be optimum for aerobic performance. After the 10 day trial trial the test group improved VO2 max by 5% in cool conditions and by 8% in hot conditions. Time trialing performance improved by 6% in cool conditions and by 8% in hot conditions. Power output increased by 5%. Plasma volume increased by 6.5%. The control group had no change in any of the measurements. The group came from the same cycling team and training. The study is listed here. A method for heat acclimation 5. Andrew Starykowicz Update Andrew is the only pro triathlete featured on the show so far. His episode, number 19, has been very popular. You can stay updated on his racing at his website -http://www.andrewstarykowicz.com 6. History of Ironman Boulder I was unofficially the assistant race director for the first ever ironman distance race in Boulder in 2001. It was the Zoot Sports 5430 Triathlon. It eventually became a half ironman, was sold to Barry Siff, then purchased by Ironman, and in 2014 they recreated the Ironman. Here is an interview with the first men's winner, Dennis Meeker. http://duathlon.com/articles/1223/ In the podcast I noted that I wasn't exactly sure of the origin of the name, other than knowing it related to an altitude. A little research shows 5430 is listed as the official altitude of Boulder. There are city signs in Boulder that list a different altitude.
