This invigorating winter activity offers a plethora of benefits for triathletes and fitness enthusiasts alike. The Benefits Snowshoe running is a powerhouse workout that combines cardio, strength, and endurance. The added resistance of trudging through the snow increases the intensity of your runs, making it a phenomenal cardiovascular exercise that boosts your aerobic capacity. The uneven terrain challenges your stabilizer muscles, enhancing strength and coordination. Plus, it's a low-impact activity that reduces the risk of injuries typically associated with running on harder surfaces. Snowshoe running also works your core and legs harder than traditional running, promoting muscular and tendon development while improving overall athletic performance. Essential Gear Getting started with snowshoe running requires some specialized equipment, but don't worry—it's straightforward. Here's what you'll need: Snowshoes: Opt for running-specific snowshoes which are lighter and more streamlined than their hiking counterparts. Brands like Atlas and MSR offer excellent options. Running Shoes: Wear your regular trail running shoes, paired with gaiters to keep the snow out. Apparel: Dress in moisture-wicking, breathable layers to stay warm and dry. Don't forget gloves and a hat to protect against the cold. Poles (Optional): Some runners prefer using poles for added stability, especially on uneven or steep terrain. How to Get Started Starting your snowshoe running journey is easier than you might think. Follow these steps to hit the snow-covered trails with confidence: Find a Trail: Look for local parks or dedicated snowshoe trails. Many ski resorts also offer groomed trails perfect for beginners. Warm-Up: Just like any workout, start with a dynamic warm-up to prepare your muscles and prevent injuries. Pace Yourself: Snowshoe running is more challenging than regular running, so begin with shorter distances to build your endurance. Focus on Form: Keep a shorter stride and lift your knees higher to navigate through the snow effectively. Use your arms to maintain balance. Stay Hydrated: Cold weather can be deceiving; you still need to stay hydrated, so bring water and hydrate regularly. 5 Best Trails to Check Out in Colorado according to All Trails: #5. Nymph Lake Trail: Head out on this 5.0-mile out-and-back trail near Estes Park, Colorado. Generally considered a moderately challenging route, it takes an average of 2 h 34 min to complete. Before heading out on a winter hike in Rocky Mountain National Park, it is a good idea to have experience hiking in winter conditions. It is advised to keep your eye on weather and avalanche conditions. #4. Lost Lake via Hessie Trail: Located near the small town of Eldora west of Nederland, this 4.0 mile route starts at the Hessie Trailhead off County Road 130 and leads to the Devil's Thumb Trail. This great trail is a perfect option for a day trip with an incredible destination. Keep an eye out for moose which are commonly seen along this trail! #3. Saint Mary's Glacier: Explore this 1.6-mile out-and-back trail near Idaho Springs, Colorado. Generally considered a moderately challenging route. This is a very popular area for cross-country skiing, fishing, and hiking, so you'll likely encounter other people while exploring. The best times to visit this trail are April through October. Dogs are welcome, but must be on a leash. #2. Royal Arch Trail: Try this 3.3-mile out-and-back trail near Boulder, Colorado. Generally considered a challenging route. This is a very popular area for hiking, snowshoeing, and running, so you'll likely encounter other people while exploring. The best times to visit this trail are March through October. Dogs are welcome and may be off-leash in some areas. #1: Emerald Lake Trail: Try this 3.2-mile out-and-back trail near Estes Park, Colorado. So, strap on your snowshoes, and get ready to explore the serene, snowy wilderness while taking your training to the next level. Your future triathlete self will thank you! Ready to take on the snowy trails? Remember, the only limit is the one you set yourself. Happy snowshoe running! 303Triathlon News and Updates: IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship 2024: PRO Women predictions, podium picks and ones to watch 2024 has featured an everlasting gobstopper of a race calendar, with the T100 Series really kicking things off back in March. And now, finally, the IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship in Taupo finishing up what has got to be the busiest year of PRO triathlon racing in recent history. With a world title, and the last chance to grab valuable (literally) IRONMAN Pro Series points on the line, the PRO women's start list is stellar. So as some of the world's fastest female triathletes line up for one last dance before the year is out, who are the top contenders for the win? For the last time in 2024, it's time to dust off my crystal ball and attempt to bring you my pre-race predictions. There are a number of names on the 62-strong PRO women's start list who could certainly contend for the podium at the 2024 IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship. And with the race coming so late in the year, and happening almost on the other side of the world for a large number of the athletes. If there was ever a race where ‘anything could happen' this is probably it. April's Women's Picks: Taylor Knibb Kat Matthews Paula Findlay April's Men's Picks: Mathis Margirier Matt Dubrick Matt Hanson Rich's Women's Picks: Taylor Knibb Julie Derron Ashleigh Gentle Rich's Men's Picks: Hayden Wilde Kyle Smith Leo Bergere https://proseries.ironman.com/stories/start-list-pro-field-2024-vinfast-ironman-703-world-championship Is IRONMAN reconsidering Kona / Nice World Championship split as new survey drops fresh hint? It's been a hotly-debated topic ever since the rotation with Nice was announced and it seems all options are now open for the IMWC. The future location and format of the IRONMAN World Championship would appear to be more up in the air than ever judging by the latest development from the M-Dot brand. Rumours have been swirling around for much of the second part of this year as to whether the current rotation between the spiritual home of Kona and Nice will see out its four-year cycle. The IMWC had always been held in Hawaii, with the men and women racing on the same day. That was until 2022 when they were each given their own day in Kona, with the pro women racing on the Thursday that year and the men on the Saturday. From a pro racing perspective the hugely important benefit of that was that the women had their own day of racing and all the coverage that entailed. However at that point it proved too much for the islanders, with the then mayor saying: “We learned that more than one race day during IRONMAN week is too many for the community to manage.” But with a steadfast commitment now in place for separate race days for men and women, IRONMAN decided a dual location system was the next best solution – so for 2023 they announced that the women would race in Kona and the men in Nice around a month before, which would then rotate for the next four years through to 2026. We're only halfway through that process and it's far to say it continues to split opinion more than virtually any other topic in triathlon – with huge implications for age-groupers and pros alike. It's a burning issue for Scott DeRue, who this year took over from long-term incumbent Andrew Messick as IRONMAN's CEO and inherited the rotation format. Another potentially significant recent change is a new mayor in Hawaii – so could two days in Kona now be back on the table? ‘Listening and learning' Judging by a survey that IRONMAN have sent out to sections of the media (and plenty of others by the sounds of it, including the all-important athletes) it would appear that all options are again up for discussion. The email introduction to the survey we received read as follows: “Respected Members of the Media – Two years ago, we split the IRONMAN World Championship, spanning both Kona and Nice, and we are incredibly proud of all that our athletes have achieved in both of these historic and beautiful locations. Email/Survey Two years ago, we split the IRONMAN World Championship, spanning both Kona and Nice, and we are incredibly proud of all that our athletes have achieved in both of these historic and beautiful locations. During these two years, we have sought and received feedback from diverse stakeholders to help us better understand the important role of the IRONMAN World Championship within our community. One thing is clear – the IRONMAN World Championship is the pinnacle of our sport, a celebration of human achievement, and a testament to the passion and commitment of our IRONMAN community. As we look to the long-term future of the IRONMAN World Championship, we are committed to listening to and learning from our community. In this spirit, we would like your input as a valued member of our IRONMAN `ohana. Your feedback will form part of the ongoing inputs we will continue to collect as we envision the long-term future of the IRONMAN World Championship. Putting them in the best position for success on race day and beyond.” “We are continuously looking into new ways to enhance our athlete's journey and training experience, and we are excited to find a partner in TriDot who is a proven industry leader in training technology that benefits both coaches and athletes,” said Andrew Messick, President and CEO for The IRONMAN Group. “Through the tools and resources available, this partnership will help allow our athletes take the guess work out of race preparation so that they can have the successful and rewarding race day they deserve.” TriDot also provides extensive ongoing support to its global coach community which includes IRONMAN legends like Mark Allen (6x IRONMAN World Champion), Michellie Jones (IRONMAN World Champion & Olympic Silver Medalist), and Mirinda “Rinny” Carfrae (3x IRONMAN World Champion). "I'm so excited about this partnership. With TriDot, my athletes are consistently getting fitter and faster. I wouldn't coach without it," says Mirinda Carfrae. Strava introduces messaging The problem with Strava messaging is not Strava messaging, it's an environment where women don't feel safe exercising alone or existing online Coaching Tip: How (and Why) to Test? This week was a "Test Week" in my training plan. Test weeks are built into the Maintaining and Development Phases of an effective training plan. Tests should be excluded during Race Specific Training where the focus moves to rehearsing and executing at the fitness levels attained during the Development Phase. The phase cycle looks like 4 weeks of build followed by a Test week. The 4-week build progressively increases the stress load. The Test Week reduces the overall load of the training that week, but inserting each swim, bike and run tests into the week. This also makes the Test week a Recovery week. Monday - regular swim workout Tuesday - FTP Test (FTP Study: 20-Minute Power / 5-Minute Power) Wednesday - 5K Run Test (10 minute warmup; 5K for time same course every time; 10-20 minute cooldown) Thursday - easy bike Friday - Swim CSS CSS or critical swim speed is the pace at which you swim a 1500 time trial. This is quite simple but an effective way to prepare for long races. Warmup, priming 200, 400 for time, 10 minute recovery, 200 for time CSS (m/sec) = 200 / (time taken for 400m – time taken for 200m) Benefits of Testing Keeps your training zones current so you are training the correct energy zones Regular testing familiarizes you with the discomfort and pain of pushing high intensity Familiar with all your paces and the relative RPE Helps execute your race pacing See change over time (sometimes that's progress, sometimes not, good to know) What if you don't know or don't do Training above your body's real zones can leave you overtrained, burned out or injured Training below your body's real zones can leave you under trained, underperformance, or injury on race day for exceeding your abilities Stagnate if adaptions start to happen but training zones are not updated to set up the next progression of development Won't really know where that limit is and how to press to your performance limit in races Video: What happened to Heather Jackson? As one chapter closes, a new one opens. After 15 years as a professional triathlete, Heather Jackson decided to challenge herself in new ways, build a fresh community, and push her own and other's expectations of what is humanly possible. In June, Heather tackled the Unbound Gravel 200, often hailed as the "Super Bowl" of gravel bike racing, and the iconic Western States Endurance Run, the world's oldest 100-mile trail race. Facing these demanding events with just a two-week gap between them, the question looms: how will Heather approach her most ambitious goal yet? #Wahooligan #WahooFrontiers #HeatherJackson Wahoo Frontiers: Heather Jackson

"By creating opportunity, you create demand," says Brumfield, and having over 2000 women race on the Big Island elevates triathlon because it creates more pathways to racing on bigger stages. In addition, it gives female businesses better opportunities to talk directly to their consumers and create more intimate communication. Endurance News: Sudden Cardiac Arrest on National TV: An Explainer and What it Means for Triathletes Tragic events at a recent NFL football game has athletes of all kinds asking: Are we at risk? JANUARY 4, 2023 JEFFREY SANKOFF Last night much of the American television viewing public was taking in Monday Night Football to see a big game with playoff implications. The Buffalo Bills were visiting the Cincinnati Bengals when, after a fairly routine play, 24-year-old safety Damar Hamlin unexpectedly collapsed to the ground. The game announcers initially thought that Hamlin had simply been injured on the play, but very quickly it became apparent that something far more serious was going on. Hamlin, it turns out, was in cardiac arrest. Once the training staff realized what was happening began to administer cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). He was resuscitated again upon arriving at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center's intensive care unit, where he remains in critical condition. At this point, I think that is helpful to dispel confusion about some common terms that are frequently thrown around the media in these situations. Doing so now will allow for a much clearer description of what happened to this player, and help unpack whether this incident should be a cause for concern for endurance athletes who are all too familiar with the specter of sudden cardiac death (SCD) in our own sports. RELATED: Do Triathletes Need to Worry About Heart Attacks? Heart Attack vs. Cardiac Arrest The first thing that needs to be made clear is the difference between a heart attack and cardiac arrest. A heart attack occurs when there is a blockage in one of the arteries that carries blood to the tissue of the heart. The heart muscle is exquisitely sensitive to dips in oxygen-rich blood flow, so if a coronary artery becomes obstructed, the cells that are being fed by that artery do not receive oxygen—they become injured and quickly die. In medical terminology this is called a myocardial infarction. In the spring of 2021, professional triathlete Tim O'Donnell experienced a heart attack while competing in a race. Fortunately, he did not suffer cardiac arrest. Cardiac arrest, on the other hand, occurs when the heart ceases pumping blood forward to the brain and the rest of the body. There are many causes for cardiac arrest and one of the more common ones is a heart attack. However, while cardiac arrest is frequently caused by heart attacks, only a small percentage of heart attacks cause cardiac arrest. During cardiac arrest, the heart can come to a standstill in which case all electrical activity ceases. This is known as asystole, and is typically represented in popular culture or on TV as a “flat line” on a cardiac monitor. More commonly, the initial electrical rhythm in cardiac arrest is either ventricular tachycardia—in which the ventricles of the heart are being stimulated to beat so fast that they do not have an adequate amount of time to fill with blood and therefor the pumping action does not result in any blood flow—or, ventricular fibrillation, in which the electrical activity in the heart is chaotic and disorganized and the muscle just quivers and no pumping occurs at all. Whatever the underlying rhythm, during cardiac arrest there is no blood flow to the brain and it is imperative that two things happen as quickly as possible: CPR must be initiated and if indicated, cardiac defibrillation must be done. CPR is the application of chest compressions to the victim and is how some forward blood flow can be re-established until such time as the heart's normal electrical activity can be restarted. Cardiac defibrillation is the application of an electrical shock to the heart. In the setting of either ventricular tachycardia or ventricular fibrillation, this shock works to depolarize the entire heart muscle and resets the electrical system. That brief moment of pause is then hopefully when the heart's normal pace making activity can kick in and a normal rhythm can resume. Defibrillation does not work for asystole, so all those times you see characters on television or movies attempting to shock a patient who has a flat line shown on a cardiac monitor, that is just not going to work! Are endurance athletes at risk? As I mentioned earlier, SCD is a very real issue for endurance athletes, and Damar Hamlin's incident rightly heightens awareness once again on the potential tragic consequences of training for and racing in our sport or any other where we put our hearts under stress. I have spoken on my podcast on more than one occasion about this subject as well, but the situation that Hamlin experienced last night needs to be clearly distinguished from those which triathletes and other endurance athletes face. CC is a very specific and rare event that is specifically related to a blunt force trauma to the chest directly overlying the heart. Triathletes, on the other hand (as well as other endurance athletes who develop dysrhythmias or SCD) typically experience heart conditions related to structural problems from years of high-volume and high-intensity training or because of the development over time of atherosclerotic coronary artery disease that in many cases is silent. There is unfortunately little in the way that can be done to screen athletes for these problems because as horrifying as SCD is, it remains a fortunately rare event and no screening has been shown to effectively and reliably identify those who are at risk. Instead, it remains the athletes' responsibility especially as they age to be diligent about paying attention to their body and being attentive to any signs or symptoms that could be attributable to an underlying cause. Palpitations, shortness of breath at lower than expected amounts of exertion or any kind of chest pain with exertion should be signals to an athlete to cease training and seek immediate medical evaluation before returning to training. While commotio cordis is simply not likely to be an issue for triathletes, SCD remains a very real—if thankfully rare—event. While the cause may be different, an outcome similar to what Damar Hamlin experienced is still a possibility, one that we would all like to avoid at all costs. IRONMAN Announces Nice, France as the 2nd IMWC Location TAMPA, Fla./NICE, Fra. (Jan. 5, 2022) – Following the previous announcement of the IRONMAN® World Championship continuing its commitment to dedicated race days for men and women, it was announced today that Nice, France will become the location for the 2023 men's edition as co-host of the VinFast IRONMAN World Championship. The race will take place on September 10, 2023, adding to the history of the European birthplace for long-distance triathlon. As previously confirmed, the women will race on October 14, 2023 in Kailua-Kona, Hawai`i. In 2024, the men will rotate to Kona racing, on October 26, 2024, while the women will rotate to Nice and race on September 22, 2024. The rotation will continue through 2026 with Nice and Kona acting as co-hosts for the pinnacle event in triathlon. Acknowledging the importance of continuing a dedicated IRONMAN World Championship event for both women and men, IRONMAN quickly identified Nice, France amongst other world-renowned candidates as a familiar and historically important triathlon destination to join as a dual host for the event. The city has all the attributes to provide the backdrop for an exceptional world championship experience. “In 2022, we saw the power of a two-day IRONMAN World Championship, one with dedicated race days for professional women and professional men. We believe in this concept not only to showcase the depth of both the women's and men's fields but also to invest further into the growth of the sport of triathlon. Nice, France, as the European birthplace of long-course triathlon is the right place to showcase this evolution,” said Andrew Messick, President & Chief Executive Officer for The IRONMAN Group. “We are grateful to Mayor Estrosi and the City of Nice, who share our vision of creating a world-class championship race for the men in 2023, and then the women in 2024.” A 2023 Buyer's Guide to America's Best Bicycle Insurance With the right bike insurance, a cyclist can protect their bicycle or eBike, while riding or in transit, bike accessories, and theft of the bicycle with optional theft protection. January 4, 2023 / ENDURANCE SPORTSWIRE – BikeInsure, an insurtech company specializing in bicycle accident coverage for cyclists in the United States, has released a 2023 Buyer's Guide to America's Best Bike Insurance. Today's cyclists need a standalone insurance policy to protect their new or used bicycles and eBikes. BikeInsure provides damage reimbursement for repairs to your bike and listed accessories due to riding accidents. And during transit. The BikeInsure plan extends to a stolen bike or eBike when optional theft protection is selected. Standalone Bicycle Insurance refers to a separate bike insurance policy that covers specific risks not covered by your existing policies. For example, the Forbes Magazine article “Do you Need Bike Insurance for Your Bicycle?” addressed Bicycle Damage, “You crash your bike. If you crash into an object like a tree or car, you typically won't be covered under a home, condo, or render insurance policy for the bike damage.” The BikeInsure standalone insurance plan will not compromise a cyclist's homeowner's insurance if a bicycle accident claim occurs. “Unlike the few traditional bike insurance companies in the United States, BikeInsure has Standardized Bike Insurance, a simple 2-minute sign-up comprehensive insurance for bicycles,” said Buzzy Cohn, CEO of BikeInsure. BikeInsure innovated a process that allows a cyclist to obtain bike coverage with optional theft protection for a bicycle as quickly as it was to get for your smartphone, all from the BikeInsure website. In addition, the comprehensive insurance for your bike or eBike includes a standardized $10,000 limit and a $100 deductible for only $16.99 monthly. “While cycling is safe, accidents do happen,” said Ira Becker, President of BikeInsure. “Now available to cyclists across America is standalone bike insurance that is standardized with real value and reasonably priced coverage. BikeInsure is the solution for bicycle insurance.” Closing: Thanks again for listening in this week. Endurance News: IRONMAN Announces Plan for Dual Hosts for VinFast IRONMAN World Championship TAMPA, Fla. (Nov. 30, 2022) /ENDURANCE SPORTSWIRE/ – Following the first-ever two-day IRONMAN World Championship and a continued commitment to providing women and men their own dedicated day of racing, IRONMAN announced today that the 2023 VinFast IRONMAN® World Championship triathlon will move forward with two different host venues. To ensure that both professional and amateur women and men have a focused IRONMAN World Championship race experience, the women will race in Kailua-Kona, Hawai`i on October 14, 2023, with the men's race date and location outside of Hawai`i currently being evaluated and expected to be announced in January 2023. For 2024, the men and women would exchange locations. The 2022 VinFast IRONMAN World Championship was held this past October in Kailua-Kona, Hawai`i over two days for the first time in the history of the event, showcasing the very best women and men in the sport while giving both their deserved spotlight. With the future dual host locations and separation of race weeks, the women's and men's races will each garner further attention with all eyes focused on the race week activities and lead up to their respective IRONMAN World Championship race days. While the 2022 VinFast IRONMAN World Championship two-day format was a success in many areas and the two-day format in Kailua-Kona for 2023 had already been announced, IRONMAN and the County of Hawai'i concluded together that the impact of two days of racing in Kona is not currently in the best interest of the local community. “We are reinforcing our commitment for a dedicated world championship race experience for women and men to each receive an exclusive spotlight on their race. Hawai`i is in our DNA and we look forward to the first-ever exclusively women's world championship race week in Kona. At the same time, we are looking forward to announcing a co-host location for the men's race that will be worthy of an IRONMAN World Championship and will capture the imagination of our athletes and fans,” said Andrew Messick, President & Chief Executive Officer for The IRONMAN Group. Hawai`i is the proud birthplace of IRONMAN and despite not being able to undertake a two-day world championship event at this time, it will continue to be an important part in the shared history of IRONMAN, with Kona continuing as a co-host of the IRONMAN World Championship. “Hawai`i County has long enjoyed partnering with IRONMAN and this year's epic races were another example of world-class athletic competition held on the traditional Kona-Kohala world championship course,” said Hawai`i County Mayor Mitch Roth. We learned, however, that more than one race day during IRONMAN week is too many for the community to manage. We are pleased that IRONMAN plans to return to Kailua-Kona as a co-host of the 2023 VinFast IRONMAN World Championship and look forward to more exciting events in the future.” With this major move to ensure dedicated IRONMAN World Championship racing for both women's and men's fields, the qualifying cycle and slot allocations will be slightly adjusted. Allocations may be viewed here, www.ironman.com/im-world-championship-2023-slot with further adjustments to occur in line with the Men's Championship race location announcement, expected to occur in January. Additionally, all athletes who have previously qualified and registered for the 2023 VinFast IRONMAN World Championship will be contacted directly with additional information. Tour de France will skip Paris finale in 2024 For the first time in race history, the Tour de France will not conclude in Paris in 2024. That's according to La Gazzetta dello Sport, which reports that Nice will be the host of the final stage in two years. Why? With the Olympic Games set for Paris from late July into mid-August, officials do not want the logistical and security issues overlapping between the Games and the Tour. The final stage of the Tour has always been in Paris (or in nearby suburbs), and since 1975 the final stage has ended on the Champs-Élysées. The 2024 edition of the Tour is expected to start in Italy for the first time, with stages in Tuscany and the Piemonte regions before dipping into France. The race would then embark on its traditional “grande boucle” around France, but instead of heading to Paris, it will loop back toward Nice for the finale. Nice recently hosted the “grand départ” of the 2020 edition of the Tour that was rescheduled for September in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic. Details of the 2023 edition are already revealed, with the race starting in Spain's Basque Country, and the final stage, as always, in Paris. Chloe Dygert undergoes surgery to treat tachycardia Chloé Dygert has undergone surgery to treat supraventricular tachycardia (SVT), a condition which causes episodes where the heart beats much faster than usual. The North American rider revealed the information in a post on Instagram accompanied by video clips of herself lying in a hospital bed. "My SVT was annoying but not life-threatening, (as long as I stopped immediately if I was training)," Dygert, who is set to embark on her third season with Canyon-Sram next year, wrote. "My most recent episode happened while I was out on an easy basic endurance ride, my heart rate peaked at 219, then sat at 205 for five minutes and 195 for another ten minutes. "It would jump between 180 to 205 in the remainder of the episode lasting 35 minutes. I stopped and sat on the side of the road to wait for my heart rate to slow back down below 150." Dygert explained that she had been suffering from the condition for nearly a decade, though the frequency of the SVT episodes had increased in recent months. "It started for the first time back in 2015, only happening once or twice a year until this year," she wrote of the condition, which is rarely life-threatening but may cause a cardiac arrest or unconsciousness. "But just the past two months it has triggered five times. My fear is having one during a race and needing to stop so we made the decision to go in and get it fixed with the frequency increase." Dygert has endured a hard two years after suffering a brutal crash during the Road World Championships time trial in 2020. She was away from racing for nine months following the devastating knee injury suffered after colliding with a guard rail during the Imola time trial. Last year she took part in the Olympic Games road race and time trial, though her 2022 season was once again ruined thanks to a bout of the Epstein-Barr virus. Her SVT surgery seems to only be a minor blip in her recovery, however, as Dygert revealed that she is already back on the bike and training. "I was awake and lightly sedated during the procedure," she wrote. "Definitely one of the most unique kinds of pains I've ever felt. In the recovery, I wasn't allowed to move for 4 hours, giving the artery time to heal from the catheter ablation. I was back on my bike within 5 days after the procedure with only one minor hiccup happening on day 5." What's New in the 303: Meet the East High School Mountain Bike Team East is one of several teams in the league made up of kids that attend different high schools. East and South are the only Denver Public School teams in the league. 96 teams make up the league with schools as far north as Spearfish, South Dakota, and south into Northern New Mexico. How many different schools are represented on the East Team? Denver Online HS, Denver School of Arts HS, DSST: Byers HS, DSST: Cole HS, DSST: Conservatory Green HS, DSST: Montview HS, East High School, George Washington High School, Hill Campus of Arts and Sciences, Morey Middle School, North High School, Northfield High School. Describe the growth of the team over the years. The team was founded in 2010 by Steve Bussey, an employee in the District's Office of Technology. Over the next ten years, the team grew and sometimes shrank before reaching a high point of over 50 riders. However, the team shrank significantly during the pandemic and subsequent cancellation of the racing season. Coming out of the pandemic, we expected the team to be approximately 30 riders, but were pleasantly surprised to field 42 riders and racers by the end of the season. Many are girls and/or high school seniors who joined the team for the first time. In general, how experienced are kids on the team at racing, does the team attract never-before riders as much as experienced riders? Most of our riders have some experience riding trails and some already have experience racing mountain, road, or cyclocross. However, the majority of our riders have never raced before joining the team. More interestingly, being a city-based team, some of our new team members have never owned or ridden a mountain bike before, We love attracting those new to the sport. So, while the learning curve can be steep, it is incredibly rewarding. Some of our favorite stories involve our new riders and the improvement they see over the course of a season. Favorite practice rides and how often do they practice? We practice Monday and Wednesday evenings on the Front Range trails. To avoid the heat in the early part of the season, Three Sisters and Lair ‘O The Bear are favorites. As the days get shorter and cooler, we frequent Green Mtn, North Table, Chimney Gulch, and Erie Bike Park. On non-race weekends, we try to organize rides a little further afield at places like Buffalo Creek or Trestle Bike Park. The biggest hurdle for the team is getting to the trails. Every practice will have a drive 30 minutes or more just to get to the trails. We rely on riders and parents to organize transportation for those unable to drive themselves. It's not easy. The Ironman Group has been a leader in mass participation events for years. The company's portfolio now extends well beyond the Ironman triathlon series itself and includes the Rock ‘n' Roll Running Series, the multi-day road cycling event series Haute Route and a strategic partnership with UTMB Group, which organizes ultra-trail running events. The company has also been expanding its virtual events during the pandemic and recently acquired the indoor virtual cycling app, FulGaz, to further push into the ever-growing world of connected fitness. After Ironman's in-person races dropped off the calendar at the start of the pandemic in 2020, they began coming back in 2021 and expectations are high for the 2022 calendar. In this conversation between Ironman Group CEO Andrew Messick and SportsTravel Editor and Publisher Jason Gewirtz, Messick discusses how the race series brought back its events, the outlook for the coming year and how the organization uses its own proprietary CRM system to help determine future host cities. We also discuss some of the Ironman series' latest new host cities, including locations in Alaska and Oregon — firsts for the series. And we explore some of the biggest opportunities ahead in the world of mass participation events from one of the leaders in the space. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Endurance News: PROFESSIONAL TRIATHLETES ORGANISATION COMMISSIONS FILMNOVA TO PRODUCE GLOBAL BROADCAST OF THE COLLINS CUP 2021 LONDON, ENGLAND: The Professional Triathletes Organisation (PTO) today announced that it has commissioned outside broadcast specialists, FilmNova, to deliver live coverage of the PTO’s flagship event – The Collins Cup on 28th August at the extraordinary x-bionic® sphere in Šamorín, near Bratislava, Slovakia. They will work alongside multi award winning director, Martin Turner, who will head the broadcast team as Executive Producer. The Collins Cup is a new race format modelled after the Ryder Cup, which will see teams of International, European and USA athletes pitted against one another and aims to create and leverage the excitement, rivalry, drama and personalities of the sport of triathlon to attract a wider fan base. The 2021 Barkley Marathons Had No Finishers This year’s Barkley Marathons looked slightly different than previous editions. There were few international competitors due to pandemic-related travel restrictions, and because of this, a smaller field of runners (usually 40 runners line up), almost entirely Americans, took on the beast. Additionally, runners were required to get COVID-19 tests ahead of arrival, among other safety protocols. A strong contingent of Barkley veterans lined up at the start, including Big’s Backyard champion Maggie Guterl, two-time Barkley Fall Classic winner Liz Canty, the only three-time Barkley finisher Jared Campbell, and multi-time Barkley attempter Jamil Coury. There was also a lot of excitement around Barkley virgins (first-timers) Courtney Dauwalter, Western States and Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc champion; and Luke Nelson, Tor des Geants finisher. Guterl, Canty, and Dauwalter were attempting to become the first woman to finish the Barkley. The race started midweek, in order to deter spectators. Founder Gary “Lazarus Lake” Cantrell blew the conch at 2:03 a.m. ET on Thursday, March 18, and runners set off on the first loop an hour later, when Cantrell lit his cigarette. Runners dealt with rainy and foggy conditions throughout the entire event. ‘It’s impossible to say’: Chris Froome unsure of when he’ll be ready to fight for GC in races again Chris Froome has admitted that he doesn’t know when he will be able to compete for victory again. The Briton is continuing his comeback from serious injuries at this week’s Volta a Catalunya, but despite headlining Israel Start-up Nation’s team, he was dropped on the opening stage and finished 90th on stage two’s time trial, 2-05 down on former Ineos Grenadiers team-mate Rohan Dennis. The upbeat and confident Froome has made no secret in declaring his intention to win a record-equalling fifth Tour de France, but asked by Cycling Weekly if that was still a realistic goal he could fulfil this season, he said: “I can’t really put any time on it. I am just taking it one week at a time at the moment. “It’s just about following the process and I am not putting a timeline on it. Naturally, I would love to be ready for the Tour de France but I have to keep following the process and do what I can.” What's New in the 303: How Triathlon was Introduced to the World The History and Background of Triathlons A “triathlon” is defined as a three-part sports discipline comprising swimming, cycling, and running. The three sports are contested as a continuous event without a rest. The triathlon can be an individual or team event over varying distances. Triathlon history dates back to the early 1970s and originated with the San Diego Track Club. The triathlon was designed to be an alternative to hard track training. The first triathlon event was held on September 25, 1974. Don Shanahan and Jack Johnstone are pioneers in the history of the triathlon. The San Diego Track Club sponsored the event. The triathlon then comprised a 10 km run, 8 km cycle, and 500 m swim. In 1989, the sport was awarded Olympic status and featured for the first time at the 2000 Sydney Olympics in Australia. Since then, the sport has grown in popularity. In fact, no other sport achieved Olympic status in such a short time. Over the next decade, the triathlon grew by leaps and bounds and soon gained recognition worldwide. Endurance News: Update: Collegiate Club Nationals Postponed and Draft-Legal World Qualifier Rescheduled February 19: USA Triathlon has been in regular contact with local authorities in the City of Tempe, including the Department of Health, and is closely monitoring recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) regarding mass gatherings and events. In addition, we have been tracking developments at the collegiate level over the last several months, including continued online learning and student-athlete travel restrictions at many colleges and universities. Having taken these circumstances into consideration, and after consulting with members of the USA Triathlon Collegiate Club Committee, we have made the difficult decision to postpone the 2021 Collegiate Club National Championships. USA Triathlon is working diligently to find an alternate date in the fall of 2021 to host Collegiate Club Nationals in a safe and fair way for all athletes, including those with graduation dates in 2020 or 2021 who would otherwise miss the opportunity to represent their school as a senior. We will communicate any updates to the Collegiate Club Committee and all collegiate club team leaders as appropriate. A 3D-printed custom cycling shoe, the LoreOne, will launch in April Olympian and longtime bike fitter Colby Pearce has partnered with a new company Lore for a 3D-printed custom road cycling shoe. The LoreOne, a hardshell, carbon cycling shoe, will launch in April. Lore will 3D print the shoes using scans of a rider’s feet. The resulting carbon monocoque design will be more efficient than other shoes, while still allowing a rider’s feet to move “freely and powerfully” inside the hardshell structure, Lore claims. How much does it cost? How much does it weigh? And how comfortable could a hardshell carbon shoe actually be? For now, Lore is big on claims and short on details, but those are promised for its April launch. The Lore team includes people who have worked in design and engineering at brands like Apple, Tesla, Puma, DPS, Nike and Black Diamond. “We are excited to share Lore to the world,” Lore CEO Stephan Drake said in a release. “We have an amazing team that is pushing the bleeding edge of technology and design. The LoreOne is not only the most exciting cycling shoe ever made, but is revolutionary across all footwear categories. The level of customization, performance, materials, environmental sustainability, and manufacturing technology represent a bold leap into the future.” Pearce, a multi-time national champion and record holder, has long obsessed over fit, whether for record-setting hour record rides or for his bike-fitting clients. “The technology, materials, design and manufacturing is light years ahead of everything else on the market,” Pearce said. “The way the athlete works with the shoe is groundbreaking, and the foothold is unparalleled. The Lore project is three massive steps forward from any other shoe on the market. Prepare to have your head explode while your feet feel true power transfer for the first time ever. The LoreOne shoe will change the way you interact with your bike, forever.” Lore’s website is Lore.cc. What's New in the 303: USA Cycling Supports Colorado League – Free Junior Memberships, More Exposure for Collegiate Programs USA Cycling has joined the family of Colorado League sponsors for 2021-2023. Together, these organizations are dedicated to advancing opportunities for young mountain bike riders in Colorado, southern Wyoming, and northern New Mexico to ensure a promising future for the sport. Through developing youth cycling opportunities and cultivating leadership, teamwork, and community, and creating a lifelong passion for cycling, we work towards a common goal of getting more kids on bikes and keep them riding through life. Megan Hottman’s First Time In Tucson Riding and Exploring While I’ve spent a lot of time in Arizona in my life, I’ve never made it to Tucson. When I began mapping out my vanlist dreamlist of places I wanted to do, Tucson was on the list. For very specific reasons: I wanted to ride the “loop,” this amazing network of protected bike lanes all over town, totaling close to 130 miles (basically, a bike advocate’s dream come true, short of visiting Copenhagen!); and, I’ve wanted to ride Mt Lemmon, a nice long sustained climb that I’ve heard about for years. So I set up my work week to allow for a midweek visit. Because vanlife and living a life by design, on purpose, to me means maximizing the days and times during the week as opposed to only seeking fun and adventure on weekends — you know, when the rest of humanity is out doing the same. Friends, weekday exploration is where it’s at. So- looking ahead, I crushed work and adulting and then punched out for a Midweek adventure.. Video of the Week: We NEED to talk about this IRONMAN “Update” Closing: Thanks again for listening in this week. GREAT QUESTIONS today from our closed Facebook Group. We talk favorite coaches and coaching philosophy. We also go extensively on RPE (Rate of perceived exertion) and why it may be the key to being your best. We look at when it’s best to train solo or with a group. Should you work on getting better at FTP testing? Also, what about the mental side of dealing with injuries or when you should empty the tank in training? And finally, a reaction to the message from Ironman’s Andrew Messick on the state of upcoming races. Questions: Which coaches (from all sports) do you and Mike draw the most inspiration & insight from and why? Opinions on training with RPE?? Using HR and or power as a secondary indicator of how hard u r working. Thoughts on the FTP builder workouts in Zwift? From where you guys are, is there any correlation between successful athletes and whether they tend to do most of their training by themselves or with other people? Exploring “Emptying the tank’ Dealing with the mental side of injury. Thoughts on Ironman delaying race cancellations and pushing so many races into the fall? Athletes want to race, but does Ironman’s refund policy (i.e., they don’t) mean we stop signing up until races are more certain to happen? Other Topics Spawned from Athlete Questions: Learning through analogy Why GPS is like a weather forecast Who cares if you blow up? Feel better? Wait two more days You can’t un-postpone a race
Ironman Group CEO Andrew Messick joins SBJ's Andrew Levin to discuss how the outfit kept athletes engaged virtually during its hiatus, as well as how it has safely returned to hosting in-person races.

Endurance News: Triathlete Magazine Tri Bike Review Ironman Announces Taupo as Host of 2022 Ironman 70.3 World Championship Ironman today announced that Taupo, New Zealand will host the 2022 Ironman 70.3 World Championships on Dec. 10-11, 2022. Taupo was slated to host the 2020 Ironman 70.3 World Championship on Nov. 28-29, but that race was postponed and then canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. “While it was disappointing to have to cancel the 2020 edition of the Ironman 70.3 World Championship it’s great news for our athletes around the world, those in New Zealand, and the wider Taupo community, that we’ve been able to secure this magical location for a world championship event in 2022,” said Andrew Messick, President & CEO of the Ironman Group in a press release. “Taupo is an iconic Ironman destination and we look forward to having the best triathletes in the world head to New Zealand for what will be a week-long celebration of triathlon.” The 2021 70.3 World Championships will take place on Sept. 17 and 18 in St. George, Utah. Ironman says that the previously announced 2022 finalist cities of Klagenfurt, Austria and Lahti, Finland will now carry forward to 2023 with an announcement of the selected destination to come. Help Support Team USA Athletes via the Giving Games The postponement of the Tokyo Olympic Games has impacted many American triathletes and paratriathletes. USA Triathon has teamed up with several U.S. Olympic and Paralympic National Governing Bodies (NGBs) to launch the Giving Games, an effort to support and sustain U.S. sport organizations and their athletes on their journey to the postponed Tokyo Olympic and Paralymic Games in 2021. Between July 24th and August 9th (the original dates of the Tokyo 2020 Games), the USA Triathlon Foundation is conducting a direct fundraising campaign, asking for your support to fund our athletes and their mission to transform lives though sport by providing resources to swim, bike, and run for all. “The COVID-19 pandemic forced the elite domestic and International Triathlon Union (ITU) racing seasons to be put on pause, removing many U.S. triathletes’ sole source of income via prize money and sponsor incentives,” said David Deschenes, USA Triathlon Foundation Executive Director. “The postponement of the Tokyo Games adds another year of costs for athletes including travel, coaching expenses, training facilities and equipment. USA Triathlon is proud to take part in Giving Games, providing a unique opportunity for Olympic and Paralympic fans across the country to give back to the athletes who will inspire them next year in Tokyo.” What's New in the 303: 550 Mile Bikepacking on Colorado Trail–Go Sasha Underwood! August 6th, Littleton: Sasha Underwood started her solo bike journey today and is planning to ride the Colorado Trail in ten days. That’s over 50 miles of single track, hike-a-bike, not easy riding every day. All of that while carrying everything she needs; clothes, food, tent, sleeping bag, tools, stove, hydration supplies, and a lot of mental toughness and grit! She did mail ahead some food to a couple of towns along the way but otherwise is self supported. Sasha has been working for weeks to figure it out. She has a detailed guide book that shows all possible water sources, detailed terrain profiles and shows her how to get around several wilderness areas that don’t allow cyclist. That is why it’s 550 miles, one detour adds about 70 miles near Kenosha Pass and there are a few others. Sasha has completed Ironman’s, guided visual impaired athletes and completed no shortage of amazing things. But the mental toughness required for this journey is unparalleled. Chatfield 70.3 Athlete Guide With all of my athlete's races being cancelled (the most recent being last week's IM Boulder 70.3), I decided to design our own makeup Boulder 70.3 (Highlands Ranch style). I've called it CHATFIELD 70.3 and designed a course that is contained within Chatfield. The Gravel Pond is 900 meters from one end to the other, and 1800 round trip. 1.2 miles is 1931, so 1800 is going to be pretty close. I rode from the Santa Fe side of Chatfield to Titan Rd - the new road that winds it's way though newly paved roundabouts. It's 10 miles from one end to the other. 2.75 laps is 56 miles of smooth road and traffic with a max speed of 35 and no real intersection other than the roundabouts The run course is inspired by the IRONMAN BOULDER RUN Flux Capacitor and Back to the Future and has 3 out and backs (or fingers) from the Transition Area. From T2 athletes head east on "the Queen K" of Chatfield (Chatfield State Park Rd} to the Model Air Field Rd at 3 miles and turnaround heading back toward the Transition Area. That part of the course is black pavement, exposed and goes out to an airport. On the second out/back, athletes will continue west and then north on the sidewalk path to the south edge of the Swim Beach Parking and turn around at 8.25 miles and return to the Aid Station at 10 miles. On the final out/back athletes head out of the transition area south on the dirt road adjacent to the Gravel Pond on go to 11.5 miles and turnaround back to the Finish Line at 13.1 miles.. By now you have probably heard that the 2020 Ironman World Championship that was originally rescheduled from October 2020 to February 2021 has now been cancelled. I have been thinking about how much I am going to miss going there with Bill and Khem and the 303 team. I'm going to miss seeing and being in the presence of the heroes and legends of the sport. Some of you are going to miss racing in February. One of my favorite memories of my visits was the first time when Bill and I sat at Huggo's watching the Bob Babbitt show and the plan was to interview Mike Reilly after he (Mike) was finished with his interview with Bob. Endurance News: Ironman World Championships Cancelled, Hope to Hold in Fall 2021 TAMPA, Fla. (July 21, 2020) – IRONMAN today announced that, due to the continued impact of the COVID-19 global pandemic, the 2020 editions of the IRONMAN® World Championship and IRONMAN®70.3® World Championship have been cancelled. The IRONMAN World Championship will return to Kailua-Kona, Hawai`i on October 9, 2021 and the IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship will return on September 17 and 18, 2021 and take place in St. George, Utah, United States. IRONMAN is working to secure Taupō, New Zealand as the host destination for the 2022 IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship. “It is with a heavy heart that we have made the decision to cancel the 2020 editions of the IRONMAN World Championship and IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship. While we were hopeful that we could welcome our athletes, their families, and supporters to these events in early 2021, the continued impact of the pandemic makes this impossible. It is tough to make this decision in July, but it will provide the necessary clarity for our athletes, host cities and partners,” said Andrew Messick, President & Chief Executive Officer for The IRONMAN Group. “It is disappointing not to be able to provide our racing community with the opportunity to compete in the IRONMAN World Championship for the first time in our 43 year history and our IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship for the first time since inception in 2006. We will endure, however, and look forward to the day when we will again assemble the greatest professional and age-group triathletes in the world and crown world champions.” Athletes who qualified for the 2020 editions of the IRONMAN World Championship and IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship event will be contacted directly. They will have the opportunity to race in the 2021 or 2022 editions of the respective World Championships. Garmin services and production go down after ransomware attack Smartwatch and wearables maker Garmin has shut down several of its services on July 23 to deal with a ransomware attack that has encrypted its internal network and some production systems. The company is currently planning a multi-day maintenance window to deal with the attack's aftermath, which includes shutting down its official website, the Garmin Connect user data-syncing service, Garmin's aviation database services, and even some production lines in Asia. In messages shared on its website and Twitter, Garmin said the same outage also impacted its call centers, leaving the company in the situation of being unable to answer calls, emails, and online chats sent by users. The incident didn't go unnoticed and has caused lots of headaches for the company's customers, most of which rely on the Garmin Connect service to sync data about runs and bike rides to Garmin's servers, all of which went down on Thursday. What's New in the 303: State Time Trial, A Hot, Good and Safe Turnout The athletes at the Colorado State Time Trial Championship endured a hot, fierce wind leaving from Keenesburg and completing either a 10k, 20k or 40k course. 255 athletes spread over many categories of ages including para categories and non-TT bikes competed on Saturday. Many triathletes attended as well and took advantage of a special invitation from the Bicycle Racing Association of Colorado (BRAC). Results. Ft. Collins Epic Warrior Triathlon, First Front Range Triathlon Went Well About 150 athletes participated in the past weekends, Epic Warrior triathlon in Ft. Collins. Complete with small wave starts in the pool as athletes lined up in social distant cues and finishing with athletes waiting in spaced out lines for freshly made vegan hotcakes and hash, the Epic Warrior triathlon seemingly was a huge success. And a welcome chance to re-connect with the triathlon community in a safe and responsible way. Of note, the transition area looked a lot different than normal with half the bikes per bike rack, port-o-potties spread out differently and athletes wore masks setting up their transition spot and waiting in spaced out lines to enter the pool for their wave start. Each wave was fairly small and athletes entered the water about 10 seconds apart to minimize being near each other. As one group would get about halfway into their swim, the next wave would be brought in and cued up. Their journey began the evening of Friday, June 19th at 6:30pm MT, at the Utah-Colorado border just west of Grand Junction. Their goal, to complete a 483-mile relay ride across the state of Colorado while raising money for the USA Triathlon Foundation COVID-19 Relief Fund and the Care and Share Food Bank of Southern Colorado. Over the course of 483 miles, the riders averaged 20 mph, climbed nearly 23,000 feet of elevation with their highest point at Monarch Pass at 11,312 feet of elevation. Just before 8:00pm and beating the sunset, all nine riders joined together for the final mile to the Kansas-Colorado state line. Among the riders in this event was USA Triathlon CEO Rocky Harris. We also saw that USA Triathlon Foundation Awards $110,000 in COVID-19 Relief Fund Grants. But ultimately the COVID-19 headwinds in Texas right now are just too strong for the race to happen. Today's guest on "The Aid Station" is Andrew Messick, CEO at IRONMAN Group coming to us from Tampa, Florida. Andrew gives a behind the scenes look at the operational complexities of having to postpone 97 races into an already packed Q3/Q4 calendar. He talks about the importance of "over communication" to make it happen, especially with staff and a key focus on supporting younger staff during such trying times. He also highlights the value that our industry plays in giving people a goal and focus with so many athletes saying things like "I just want an anchor to focus on" which has also been reflected in the huge participation levels in the newly launched VR Club. Andrew shares his belief that the endurance industry mindset is ideally positioned to "just keep going" through these challenging times "it's like being in the last half of the marathon - keep putting one foot in front of another .."
Andrew Messick ’91 is the CEO of IRONMAN Group which runs the iconic IRONMAN® series of events, the largest participation sports platform in the world. IRONMAN Group is part of Wanda Sports Group, a leading global sports events, media, and marketing platform. He is interviewed by Reeve Harde ’20.
You may have seen the press release from The Professional Triathlon Organization this week and their letter to Wanda Sports Group announcing that they have the financing to make a cash offer for the "WTC business" which includes IRONMAN. Our guest this week is the legendary Rachel Joyce who also happens to be one of the Co- Presidents of PTO along with Tim O'Donnell, who signed the letter. Thanks to last weekend's guest, Quinton Varce of the 127 Fit Podcast. He's a cool, young guy, who has decided to live his dream to become a personal trainer and a podcaster to share other people's stories in fitness. Check out episode #217. Sponsor - iKOR Labs: I have two great iKOR stories for you this week. Story #1 - I spent last weekend skiing in Steamboat. In years past, just an hour of skiing bumps would have my knees swelling up on the ride home. I skied two day with bumps here and there and had no problem at all. Just 5 pumps of the daily shot in the morning and evening and I had no swelling at all. Story #2 - I'm in Tempe for work last week and Wednesday morning I'm in the hotel fitness center and doing core and strength work when I pinched my sciatic nerve on my left side. I could barely move and after struggling through some upper body strength work for 10 minutes, ended the workout and walked gingerly back to my room with a pain level of about 6. I took my daily shot before getting in the shower. By the time I was walking to my rental car 30 minutes later, the pain was about a 3. Great for preventing inflammation. Awesome for pain relief. Announcements: Last week I shared my strong recommendation to take the TrainingPeaks University course, 'The Science of Endurance Hydration' course. It’s important for athletes to know the answers to questions like: What makes sodium so important to performance? How do athletes lose sodium? What happens when your sodium losses mount up? how much sodium should you be taking in? It is essential that coaches know this information. For coaches that are not confident in their knowledge, or the athlete that does not have a coach, this is a must take course. It’s a good value at full price, but the Precision Hydration team is offering the MHE Podcast listeners 50% off using the code SWEAT-H6YF. Interview with Rachel Joyce: A week ago the Professional Triathlete Organization announced their new board members last week to include Lionel Sanders and Alistair Brownlee. Just this week PTO submitted a letter to Wanda Sports Group explain that PTO is prepared to consider an all-cash transaction or one in which the existing shareholders of WSG are able to participate in the growth of the WTC Business that the PTO is uniquely positioned to deliver. It goes on to read "Without our cooperation the WTC Business would deteriorate". It also closes with "We hope that you and your Board share our enthusiasm and, consistent with applicable fiduciary duties look forward to a prompt and favourable reply". Is there a genuine expectation of a positive response from WSG? Are those words simply polite way of saying "hurry up and say we want to work with PTO to sell to PTO? What would be the leadership structure at the PTO version of IRONMAN? How will IRONMAN respond? That letter was signed by PTO Chairman, Charles D. What is Ironman worth today? What do you think it could be worth? We talked about the letter in the intro. From the letter "PTO and its professional athletes that the WTC Business has the ability to stabilise and grow, and that without our cooperation the WTC Business would deteriorate." - Are you trying to save and maintain, or grow? Is there a genuine expectation of a positive response from WSG? Are those words simply polite way of saying "hurry up and say we want to work with PTO to sell to PTO? What would be the organization structure be in the PTO version of IRONMAN? What would an ideal response from IRONMAN respond? What's likely to be the response? What would be your first priorities? What will stay the same? The letter closes with "We hope that you and your Board share our enthusiasm and, consistent with applicable fiduciary duties, we look forward to a prompt and favourable reply." - What do you expect their response to be? Have there been any informal communications with Andrew Messick or the Wanda leadership that they might view this favorably? Don't Fry Bacon Naked: Type "post ironman" into Google and what do you think the first result is? Post Ironman "Blues". Post race season blues are pretty common. As athletes complete their A race goals, they often have feelings of post race blues. They have been working toward their goal for months. The bigger the goal and the greater the commitment and sacrifice, the bigger the let down after. The athlete has structured their world, organized their time, dedicated themselves to preparation, and now it's over. Here are the comments that I hear: "A little let down that I don't have a goal any more" "Empty that I don't have a date to work toward" "Feel a little anxious" "Fear that without a goal it won't be as easy to make healthy choices" "What's New in the 303": USAT is hosting the Colorado Combine. In the second of the ‘Boys are away’ shows we have to interviews. First off we have Ironman CEO Andrew Messick. Then we have an interview with up and coming pro athlete Sika Henry.
I’ve been a longtime fan of Ironman, right from that day over 30 years ago when I watched the 1982 coverage with Julie Moss, through to my first Ironman in 1995, and to 2017 when I finally got to the start (and finish line) in Kona. On that journey I have seen massive changes at WTC - 3 changes of ownership, growth in Ironman events from 8 to over 40, and the introduction of 70.3 among the most notable. Ironman is not without its detractors and many of them make some very vocal if slightly unfair comments. Well today, I get to chat to the man at the top, CEO of Ironman, Andrew Messick. He agreed in advance that I could ask him anything, although he also stated that he reserved the right to ‘pass’ on any question. Fortunately that didn’t happen, and you will be able to hear in our conversation: The challenges of changing an Ironman race venue in less than 4 weeks (Ironman Florida 2018) Why compromising athlete safety is never an option for Ironman Delivering life changing events for incredible people Drafting in Kona - is changing the start the answer to congestion on the bike? Kona - why racing over 2 days is not feasible on the Big Island Drug testing - what WTC are doing right now Celebrities racing in Kona - why it’s a good thing for Ironman Why Ironman does not go back to some race venues Will they ever move the Ironman World Championships from Kona? M-dot tattoos - why Ironman is proud and scared of this trend Andrew explains how he was an Ironman athlete before an Ironman employee, and why Challenge Roth IS on his bucket list Deferrals, refunds, and special cases For more information please go to www.SimonWardTriathlonCoach.com, or www.
