Biodiverse spaces are important not only for healthy ecosystems but they also bring tangible benefits for our mental wellness as well. Unfortunately new data shows that some of our most loved garden visitors – the Lepidoptera, or butterflies and moths – are in alarming decline. We'll be finding out from Dr Richard Fox, Head of Science at Butterfly Conservation, how gardeners can give them the boost they need. Ed Cooper from the trials team down at RHS Garden Wisley shows us another way of welcoming in not only butterflies and moths, but a whole host of other wildlife as well, with advice on sowing annual and perennial wildflower meadows. And finally, we find out how to maximise our outdoor spaces for our four legged friends, with Lead Horticulturist Dawn Grehan, at Battersea Dogs and Cats Home.   Host: Gareth Richards   Contributors: Dr Richard Fox, Ed Cooper, Dawn Grehan Links:  Butterfly Conservation Butterfly recording and monitoring RHS Plants for Pollinators RHS Chelsea Flower Show How to create a pet-friendly garden Potentially harmful garden plants

How the devil are you lovely Bookshelvers?!The dust has now settled after another fabulous DOGX and with Nat away on her holidays and corrin run off her feet it falls to Steve to host this episode SOLO (what could go wrong?). Luckily Nat and Corrin were around when we interviewed the wonderful, awesome, trail blazing human that is Gwen Bailey about her book The Perfect Puppy. We discuss her journey in dog training, the evolution of her book 'The Perfect Puppy', and the changes in training techniques over the years. She reflects on her experiences in kennels, the importance of communication with dog owners, and the impact of her work on the dog training landscape. The team and Gwen also delve into the complexities of dog training, discussing the challenges of reaching puppy owners, the impact of educational resources like books as well as the flexibility of training curriculums, and the significance of consent-based handling. We sing from the rafters about the importance of collaboration among training organisations and explore the fundamental qualities that make a good dog trainer. On top of all that we have a segment of interviews Steve did running around at lunch time at DOGX (where he mentions potatoes at least 500 times). Enjoy!Gwen Facts:Gwen worked for a leading UK national animal welfare charity from 1988-2002 and pioneered the use of dog behaviour knowledge in the rehoming of unwanted animals. She was the first person to be appointed by a national animal welfare charity as a full time Animal Behaviourist, eventually heading a team of behaviourists.Gwen has successfully solved behaviour problems in thousands of rehomed dogs, helping to prevent dogs with behavioural problems being passed from home to home and improving the rehoming success rate.Gwen has lectured at national and international conferences, run training courses for staff at animal charities around the world and has written many books & education leaflets. She is a past Chair of the Association of Pet Behaviour Counsellors and a past Trustee for Battersea Dogs and Cats Home.In 2003, Gwen founded and now runs Puppy School, a large network of professionally-trained puppy tutors which is a Practitioner Member of the Animal Behaviour and Training Council. Puppy School tutors have collectively helped to have a positive training impact on more than 100,000 puppies and their owners, and continue to run excellent classes around the country. You are going to love this conversation with this week's guest, Niki French! Today, Niki shares her dog training backstory, and why she decided to write the bestselling book, “STOP walking Your Dog” along with founding the international #dontwalkyourdogday which happens every April 2nd. We dive into how the whole idea - and pressure! - of taking our dogs for walks in the ways that we do is actually a human invention that isn't necessarily the best thing for every dog. Niki also talks through a real-life example of how to help a senior dog with joint issues adjust to a new routine. Niki is a self-described, “dog-mad, people-loving, award-winning dog trainer, author, and podcaster”. After a bicycle accident in 2014 interrupted her 30-year career as an international Sales and Marketing Director (queue the Universe stepping in!) Niki pursued her childhood dream of working with animals. In 2019 she set up Pup Talk and Twickenham Dog Services, in collaboration with her CEO Bodie, a lively Collie Lurcher Cross, that she rescued from Battersea Dogs and Cats Home in London.  Niki's area of expertise is really in helping dog-owners to learn how to leave stress and frustration behind with simple, fun, and transformational games to help build a stronger bond with their pup. If you're anything like me, and the dog walk can be just as stressful for you as it is for your dog, I just know you're going to come away from this episode feeling seen, and with a bunch of new tools for your tool belt!  Even if you don't have a reactive dog like Lucky, you'll gain some really helpful tips and tricks that you can be using to enrich your dog's experience, or to give them something really fun to do when going for a walk isn't an option. Heartfelt tributes are being paid to Paul O'Grady following his shock death at the age of 67. The TV and radio star, who lived near Ashford, passed away yesterday evening. He was well known for his love of animals and was a passionate supporter of Battersea Dogs and Cats Home, visiting their site in Brands Hatch with the Queen Consort last year. In November, he was made a Deputy Lieutenant of Kent. Also in today's podcast, an investigation is under way following a suspected arson attack at a former pub near Sevenoaks. At KentOnline you can see drone pictures showing the damage to the building on South Ash Road in Ash. Asylum seekers who cross the Channel to Kent in small boats could be housed on barges and in former RAF bases under plans being drawn up by the government. An announcement's expected later as ministers say they want to reduce the number of refugees in hotels. A couple who live off grid in converted shipping containers on land they own near Folkestone have been ordered to demolish their home. Reporter Rhys Griffiths has been speaking to Dan and Stacey Bond who have lived on the site at Swingfield Minins since April last year. And, a former soldier from Kent is embarking on an epic mission to climb Everest - despite the fact he doesn't have either of his legs. Hari Budha Magar from Canterbury was seriously injured in an IED explosion while serving in Afghanistan in 2010.

This week Anna is joined by Mike Dower, founder of Jai Dog Rescue in Thailand. Talking about why he left a busy career in London five years ago to set up a rehabilitation centre helping street dogs in Thailand, his passion for these dogs shines through. We talk about why Battersea Dogs and Cats Home is so inspired by Jai Dog and its sanctuary, it has invested in a five year initiative and financial collaboration called:  CNVR - Capture, Neuter, Vaccinate and Release scheme.  Offering vet care to those injured mainly in road accidents, the charity also re-habilitates those that have small injuries  before re-releasing them neutered and healthy to the streets. Thailand being a Buddhist country means cruelty and abuse are not common, but Jai Dog aims to educate with outreach projects to involve communities with the dogs. Jai Dog rehabilitates those dogs injured in road accidents, sadly making up 60% of the dogs treated in their care. And for many of these tripod dogs, Mike explains how they remain at the sanctuary for life. We chat about cultural differences, particularly surrounding euthanasia and about the dedicated  team looking after the 91 dogs currently living at the sanctuary. The aim is for dogs to find their forever home both overseas and in Thailand. As a charity, Jai Dog is very fussy about potential adopters, but if you're interested, don't be shy to apply. The charity also has on-going costs for food, medication, flea and tick preventatives, enrichment toys and so much more. So much of the meaning we find in life comes from reaching out to help others. Charlotte Fielder has been the Head of Volunteering and Fostering at London's famous Battersea Dogs and Cats Home since 2015. She finds intense meaning in giving animals a second chance and supporting the Battersea volunteers who work for love, not money.  Charlotte is herself a failed foster carer after rehoming Max in August 2017. Dogs have been an enormous part of her life, and she talks with Andrew about the magic of dogs in family relationships and the joy and meaning they bring to individuals.  Charlotte has also worked extensively to support children with upper limb difference. She is a patron of EDRIC (The European Dysmelia Reference Information Centre) a not for profit organisation that shares knowledge with those affected by congenital limb loss. She is also the author of ‘Shared Experiences,' a resource for the families of these children. Charlotte worked for 33 years in UK Government agencies including the Home Office and National Criminal Intelligence Service before leaving to work in volunteer services at a hospice.
