Smoked fish and kumara top pie Cook time: 12 minutes Prep time: 15 minutes Serves: 6 1kg smoked fish, broken roughly 2 large kumara, peeled and diced 1 onion, peeled and diced 1 tbsp curry powder 4 eggs, boiled till hard, peeled and chopped 3 cloves garlic, peeled and smashed 1 onion, peeled and diced 3 tbsp butter 3 tbsp flour 1 cup grated tasty cheese 300ml veggie stock Pre-heat the oven to 180 degrees Place the diced kumara into a pot of cold water with a pinch of salt and bring to the boil. Cook until tender and drain. Once it has cooled slightly smash with a fork or potato masher. Heat a pan over a medium heat and saute the garlic and onion in the butter, then whisk in the flour and curry powder to make a roux (like a paste). Make sure it is nice and smooth, then whisk in the stock and continue to whisk until it becomes thick. Once the sauce has thickened, then add your roughly broke flakes of fish and combine well with a spatula and check for seasoning. Place into a 20cm x 30cm roasting tray and cover with the smashed kumara and top with the grated tasty cheese. Bake for 30 mins on 180 degrees. Kumara's back in abundance after many crops were devastated by Cylone Gabrielle. About 97% of Aotearoa's kumara is grown in Northland, due to warm climate and good soil, but much if it was left rotting in the ground because of storm damage. At it's scarcest, some Kumara prices topped out at around $14 a kg. Fans will be delighted to know new seasons orange, gold and red are on supermarket shelves. But at what cost? Foodstuffs North Island Head of Produce and Butchery Brigit Corson speaks to Lisa Owen.
This year's Kathmandu Coast to Coast multisport race has seen two Wānaka locals claim the championship title. They race on foot, bikes and in boats with the one-day event taking them anywhere between 10-12 hours. Wānaka's Hamish Elliot won his first men's race this year with a time of 10 hours 48 minutes 53 seconds, while Simone Maier took her fifth title with a finishing time of 12 hours, 31 minutes, and 8 seconds. Elliot and Maier spoke to Ingrid Hipkiss.
It's almost a year since kumara crops, which were ready to be harvested in the Kaipara District in Northland were pretty much wiped out by two major weather events.

Welcome, everyone, to another episode of "A Little Impolite," where the vibes are high, the topics are fresh, and yes, we sometimes toss the rule book right out the window. Today, we have a captivating guest whose journey takes us beyond the veil through profound near-death experiences. Joining us today is the extraordinary Sharon Sananda Kumara. Sharon shares her unique experiences and insights that bridge the spiritual and physical worlds. We can't help but be intrigued by her three cool names, leaving me curious about not having three cool names myself. From childhood, Sharon exhibited a remarkable connection to the metaphysical, sharing vivid memories of seeing spirits and experiencing psychic phenomena. These encounters, including a poignant moment surrounding her grandfather's passing, ignited her curiosity about life beyond the physical realm. We explore how her Catholic upbringing influenced her interpretation of these experiences and beliefs. Sharon unveils a pivotal moment in 2001, when a tubing trip in San Antonio took a dramatic turn. She recounts the heart-stopping fall from a bus and the subsequent out-of-body journey. Central to this experience was her profound connection with her stepfather and an encounter with Yeshua (Jesus), radiating love and acceptance. The episode delves into the lasting impact of this encounter, weaving together themes of healing, purpose, and the empowerment found in trusting one's intuition. A shortage of New Zealand kumara from Kaipara has forced Nelson chip company Proper Crisps to temporarily switch to sweet potato from Australia. It had already opened a sweet potato factory in Yarra Valley in Victoria last year to meet demand across the ditch. Kaipara Kumara managing director Anthony Blundell told Mike Hosking that it's not a major blow to either party. He says that variety of sweet potato isn't too dissimilar to the kumara they grow, so switching to Australia is the best option. Kumara in some supermarkets at the moment are around $13 a kilo. Jack, Ben and Joe source their fruit and vegetables from a family owned farm near Waipapa and other Northland growers and sell direct to the public through stalls around the region. A kiwi ice cream company is using reject gold kumara that would otherwise be destined for landfill to make gelato. So it started working with food producers to rescue the root vege and turned it into ice cold gold. Kumara growers are facing a double whammy, covering the cost of harvesting already rotten crops and the risk any salvaged vegetables could go the same way. The exact losses across the industry aren't known yet, but some estimate 90 percent plus of kumara could be ruined after being soaked for days in lakes of rain water. The harvest season is just getting underway, but some growers can already see and smell what's going on underneath the soil. Then there's the problem of fixing the soil too - with it flushed of nutrients. Warwick Simpson grows Kumara in Ruawai South of Dargaville. He's lost at least 30 percent of his crop, probably more and that's going to mean a talk with the bank.
Some vegetable prices have doubled since Cyclone Gabrielle hit New Zealand and decimated vast areas of crops. Kumara and leafy vegetables are among the veges hardest hit by flooding, and supermarkets and wholesalers say customers should get used to higher prices. Tom Taylor has this report.
Kaipara Kumara Anthony Blundell runs his business at Ruawai near Dargaville, where the power is out and the land is rain-soaked. He says it's been a tough 24 hours.
