As someone who has been writing and creating on the internet for over a decade, I know first hand all the challenges that one can face in their pursuit of creative work. The desire to create is there, but the obstacles are real, especially if you become a parent and feel like your time, resources and energy are limited. My guest, Ashlee Gadd, is the perfect person to speak to his as she has just released a book called Create Anyway: The Joy of Pursuing Creativity in the Margins of Motherhood Ashlee and I ended up talking for two hours about art and perfectionism, how it takes a village to create good work, and the social media of it all. We also took a tangent and had a fascinating discussion about paid communities (including Patreon - where I host Secret Stuff), and metrics and some of the more in-the-weeds parts of content creation. That part of the conversation will be available to Secret Stuff members only. JOIN SECRET STUFF HERE I felt so inspired after talking with Ashlee. You don't have to be a writer or online creator to enjoy this conversation. All of us are wired for some sort of creative expression and life can always get in the way of that. You can buy Ashlee's book Create Anyway wherever you buy books. I hope this conversation inspires you to pursue your own creative outlet with abandon. In this episode, Sam & Andy explore the concept of digital minimalism. What does it mean, how does our current relationship with technology look and how do we strike the right balance of use of technology. In parts this turned more into a discussion around the negatives (and positives) of social media. Book referenced: Cal Newport Digital Minimalism

The world today is becoming dangerously digital. With the booming of social media and digital application growing in depth and complexity, keeping a healthy mindset can turn into a cluttered and stressful experience. Cal Newport, a computer science professor from Georgetown University, has some brilliant advice on how and why the philosophy of Digital Minimalism is the key to living a focused life in an increasingly noisy world. To read more about Cal's book, Digital Minimalism, go to calnewport.com/books/digital-minimalismIf you'd like to find out more about about Cal Newport and his work, simply visit calnewport.comListener TribeWe have our own private social network for listeners of the Unmistakable Creative podcast. In this video I will talk about the Digital Minimalism: Choosing a Focused Life in a Noisy World book by Cal Newport. This book is about how to use social media and the tools of the internet in a why that doesn't distract you working. It's quite difficult to focus nowadays, all the apps on your phone want your attention. This challenge requires us rethinking how we use social media and how it impacts our lives. This is a slight diversion from the usual episode, but I know a lot of you are bookworms, like me. However, you might be finding it hard to read right now because you’re too stressed. Or you don’t want to read the same type of books. Or you’re having trouble getting books because you always relied on your local library, which is now shut down. So, I’m going to talk about all these things today, while also giving some book recommendations. I’m also going to talk about some non-fiction business books that have really helped me and my freelance business over the years. If you want to skip to just the business book recommendations, fast-forward to 29:00. I was in a bit of a book slump when the pandemic hit, so after reading one good book, I struggled to figure out what to read next. And while many of us might be struggling to read at times, turns out we’re buying a lot of books online. Let’s first talk about how you can access or buy books right now. First, audiobooks. The obvious place to start is Audible, which is Amazon’s audiobookstore. Audible offers the first month free for you to try it out. But I know many of you are anti-Amazon and would prefer to give your money to someone else. So, you might want to instead try Libro.FM, which allows you to buy audiobooks directly through your favorite independent bookstore. You can choose to buy audiobooks whenever you want or you can sign up for a monthly membership for about $15 a month. That gives you one audiobook a month, plus 30% off additional audiobooks. Libro’s profits are split with the indie bookstore of your choice. Get audiobooks from your local library through an app called Overdrive or an app called Libby, which is also by Overdrive. Now, let’s talk about buying books. Twitter pointed me to Better World Books, which is an online used bookstore that, turns out, is based in my home state of Indiana. Every time you buy a book, Better World Books donates a book to someone. The company also collects discarded books from libraries. Libraries need to get rid of books to make room for new ones, and sometimes these books end up in the landfills. But Better World Books takes in all those books, sells what they can and then donates a lot of them. And only then do they get rid of the rest—by recycling them. Better World Books right now is offering 20% off with free shipping if you have buy at least two books. I bought five books on my TBR list for $40 total. Another used book option is Half Price Books, which is a brick-and-mortar chain that sells mostly used books but also some new books. I bought four books from Half Price online as gifts for my parents. The store charged me for shipping for each book, which seemed strange even if it still wasn’t that expensive. But I soon realized it was because each book was pulled from whichever store had it in stock and shipped from that store. Next up, let’s support independent bookstores. I chose to buy two new books directly from Wild Geese Bookshop in my college town, Franklin, Indiana. Wild Geese is only a few years old. It opened in the fall of 2016. I heard about it through friends, and my mom and I checked it out a few years ago and instantly fell in love with this tiny, perfectly curated shop. Another way I could have bought from Wild Geese Bookshop or other indie bookstores is through a new website called Bookshop. At Bookshop.org you can buy books all in one spot but choose which independent bookstore the sale will benefit. Here’s how Bookshop works: Independent bookstores place affiliate links on their own websites, social media, e-newsletters, etc. For every book sold through that link, that bookstore receives 25% commission. Another way to find a good independent bookstore is through Indiebound.org, which also has the Indie Next List, a fun list of book recommendations from indie booksellers. Next up, my favorite book podcasts. My absolute favorite is What Should I Read Next by Anne Bogel, in which Anne asks a guest to talk about three books they love and one book they hate and what they would like to be different in their reading life. Then, she recommends three books to them on the spot. Other book podcasts that are new to me: All the Books! by Book Riot Currently Reading From the Front Porch And check out my friends at Writer’s Bone, where they interview authors about writing and their books. Book talks: A lot of book talks have now gone online, so it doesn’t matter where you live. Here in DC, Politics and Prose was known for having an author talk in the store every single night. Now, those talks are being streamed online. Other stores are doing the same. You can also check in with your favorite authors’ websites and social media accounts to see what they’re up to and where they might be streaming next. Anne Bogel did a Stay at Home Book Tour with several authors over the past few weeks via Zoom. All of these were recorded and you can watch them at your leisure. Book recommendations: “The Splendid and the Vile,” by Erik Larson “The Glass Hotel,” by Emily St. John Mandel “Station Eleven,” by Emily St. John Mandel “The Resisters,” by Gish Jen “The Red Lotus,” by Chris Bohjalian “Still Life,” book 1 in the Inspector Gamache series by Louise Penny “The Widows of Malabar Hill” (book 1), by Sujata Massey “The Satapur Moonstone (book 2), by Sujata Massey “Murder on the Orient Express,” by Agatha Christie “And Then There Were None,” by Agatha Christie “Evvie Drake Starts Over,” by Linda Holmes “Daisy Jones & the Six,” by Taylor Jenkins Reid “Most Likely,” by Sarah Watson “The Freelance Content Marketing Writer,” by Jennifer Goforth Gregory “Atomic Habits,” by James Clear “Make Time,” by Jake Knapp and John Zeratsky “Deep Work,” by Cal Newport “Digital Minimalism,” by Cal Newport Biz Bite: Take Your Office Outside Resources: Book recommendations are all linked above. “Book sales surge as self-isolating readers stock up on ‘bucket list’ novels” “Books Are My Secret For Fighting Coronavirus Anxiety” “Overdrive vs. Libby: Which Will Serve You Best?” “How to Get Books When Bookstores and Libraries Are Closed” Episode #4 of Deliberate Freelancer: Work Only with Nice Clients, with Jennifer Goforth Gregory Audible Libro.FM Overdrive Libby Better World Books Half Price Books Politics and Prose (DC) Kramerbooks (DC) Loyalty Books (DC) The Strand (New York City) Powell’s City of Books (Portland, Oregon) Wild Geese Bookshop (Franklin, Indiana) Bookshop.org Indiebound.org What Should I Read Next? podcast All the Books! podcast by Book Riot Currently Reading podcast From the Front Porch podcast Writer’s Bone podcast Stay at Home Book Tour
In his letter to the Romans, St. Paul says, “Do not conform yourselves to this age but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and pleasing and perfect.” (Romans 12:2) And from the Book of Proverbs, "In all toil there is profit, but mere talk leads only to poverty." Thank you for this download and taking the time to listen. If you find these conversations helpful, we would be grateful to those willing to rate, review, and share with others who might find them useful. In this episode, Deacon Brad Watkins, Headmaster of the Academy, is joined by Dr. Jake Noland, Dean of Faculty, and Mr. Charles McCants, Classics Teacher and Student Life Coordinator, for a conversation about Deep Work, based on the book of the same title by Dr. Cal Newport. This is a timely topic, especially as the COVID-19 Coronavirus has forced the closure of our school and we take student formation to a distance learning/online format. Deep Work defined: “Professional activities performed in a state of distraction-free concentration that push your cognitive capabilities to their limit. These efforts create new value, improve your skill, and are hard to replicate.” (from Deep Work, by Cal Newport) Shallow Work defined: “Noncognitively demanding, logistical-style tasks, often performed while distracted. These efforts tend to not create new value in the world and are easy to replicate.” (from Deep Work, by Cal Newport) Deep Work by Dr. Cal Newport Digital Minimalism by Dr. Cal Newport The Shallows by Nicholas Carr iGen by Jean Twenge Technopoly by Neil Postman Irresistible by Adam Alter Mind Change by Susan Greenfield World Without Mind by Franklin Foer Simon Sinek on Millennials in the Workplace (video) We are grateful for your support and humbly ask that you pray for our mission to form young men and women, the whole person, to the greater glory of God. Most of us know that addiction to digital tools is costing us both productivity and peace. But giving them up completely isn't realistic. We're addicted to texting, Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter not because we're stupid or shallow, but because they provide real value in the form of connection, community, affirmation, and information. Technology, the internet, and even social media can be wonderful tools for the singer.....until they are not. Many of these tools have been engineered to distract and steal away your time and attention - leaving you less time and energy for singing and creative pursuits. In this episode, John discusses how to control your digital distractions and how to stay focused on your vocal growth. EPISODE LINKS: Deep Work by Cal Newport Digital Minimalism by Cal Newport
#85 My 5-Day Social Media Detox Insights You might not realize how often you check your phone out of habit, or how much time you spend scrolling on Instagram or Facebook, but many of us are slightly addicted to this slow drip of dopamine that the notifications and instant interaction on social media provide. So what happens when we step away for a little while? What might we create space for? What insights might arise in this space that is usually occupied with posting on and consuming social media? I recently took a trip to Boulder, Colorado and I decided to try this out. In this episode, I share my (many) insights with you. How dare you work only 3-4 hours a day and say you're working hard! In all honesty, people that say they work 10 hours a day are usually full of s***. We had this discussion in a recent mastermind call and it dawned on us that everyone is pretending to be busy while spending 3-4 hours daily doing important work is a huge output. And the ones that actually spend more time doing productive work are the ones that do something that doesn't feel like work for them. We touched on different topics like: - Deep work - 80/20 rule - Parkinson's law - event time vs. clock time - mastery - digital minimalism - journaling These were the resources mentioned: - Deep Work by Cal Newport - Digital Minimalism by Cal Newport - The One Thing by Gary Keller, Jay Papasan & Geoff Woods - Mastery by Robert Greene - The Four Hour Work Week by Tim Ferriss - Elon Musk, Gary Vaynerchuk, Richard Branson, Tony Robbins What are your experiences?

I am super excited to bring you this week’s episode of the podcast… but I have to be honest and tell you that recording this episode was one I was pretty nervous about. You see, unlike most of my other guests, I didn’t have any relationship with Cal Newport. I didn’t know anyone who knew him. I didn’t know his publisher. And I’d never connected with him on social media (because, as we’ll talk about on the show, he doesn’t have social media!) When I read his book, Deep Work, at the beginning of 2019, I knew immediately that I wanted to try to have him on the podcast. But since I had read his book and knew how carefully he guards his time and commitments, I figured it would be a long shot for him to even consider coming on my little show. However, I decided to get brave and send him a compelling email pitching him the opportunity to come on my show. What’s the worst that could happen? He could not answer or he could respond and say no. To my surprise, not only did I get an email back, but I got an email back with a YES! I was ecstatic and excited and quite nervous to do the interview! But I’m really, really happy with how it turned out (and I don’t even think you can tell I was nervous!) I loved the insights Cal shared in this episode! We talked about: What Deep Work can look like for us in our everyday lives (including some special insight for busy moms!) His thoughts on why he doesn’t use social media (which I find fascinating!) How we can make technology serve us well and enrich our lives Why technology might be hurting our kids and what practically we can do about it. It’s a really important conversation and I highly encourage you to find 30 minutes sometime in the next few days to listen in. (My water tumbler that I talk about on the show.) In This Episode: [02:53] – This week, we talk about water tumblers, drinking a gallon of water per day, and inflammatory issues (it sounds like we’re getting old!) in the What’s Saving My Life segment. [06:55] – My book pick is one that I actually recently re-read (I rarely read books more than once, so you know I really liked it!) and recommend the book, the audiobook, AND the movie! [09:35] – Did you know you can earn cash back for shopping online? I’ll tell you how! [10:28] – I introduce today’s guest, Cal Newport and ask Cal to define the difference between Deep Work and Shallow Work. He then talks about how busy women and moms can find time for deep work. [13:16] – We hear an example of what deep work looks like in practical terms for an everyday woman. [15:15] – Cal has never had a social media account. He explains his reasoning behind this choice. It’s pretty fascinating! [18:36] – I ask Cal to share some advice for people like me who don’t ever plan to give up social media but who also find the idea of being a digital minimalistappealing. [23:08] – We talk about how to raise kids with a healthy view of technology and social media and I share a recent example of a choice we made with our oldest and how that played out in a surprising way! [26:41] – The question of the week is this: “What’s your easiest tip for saving money?” I talk about saving money on groceries. Jesse talks about goal setting and saving for bigger purchases. And we both discuss budgeting. [30:54] – Speaking of questions, if you have one you’d like us to answer, email me at crystal@moneysavingmom.com! Cal Newport is an associate professor of computer science at Georgetown University and author of Digital Minimalism: Choosing a Focused Life in a Noisy World. He is the author of six other books, including Deep Work (see our earlier conversation), which argued that our ability to concentrate without distractions is becoming rare. He sold his first book to Random House in the summer after his junior year of college. You won't find him on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram, but you can often find him at home with his family in Washington, DC, or writing essays for his popular website calnewport.com.Stew and Cal discuss Cal’s research on digital decluttering and how it increases one’s productivity, maximizes the return on one’s investment in technology use, improves one’s overall happiness, and enhances genuine social connections. Cal talks about the ways in which social media companies (e.g., Facebook and Twitter), in order to increase their value for initial public offerings, strategically engineered their products to be sticky, generate compulsive use, and be addictive. He talks about how our overuse of technology does not make us more productive because we’re not using it wisely. He recommends being intentional with our use of technology, adopting a philosophy of digital minimalism. Doing so starts with identifying one’s core values, taking a 30-day decluttering hiatus, re-evaluating what’s really important, realizing the value of solitude, and consciously re-introducing technological tools if and only if they promise real benefit. The result is a greater sense of freedom and enhanced performance. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
In Episode 77 of Hidden Forces, Demetri Kofinas speaks with Cal Newport about his latest book, Digital Minimalism and the act of “choosing life” in a hyperconnected world. “The mass of men lead lives of quiet desperation,” writes, transcendentalist author and essayist Henry David Thoreau, in the first chapter of Walden titled, “Economy.” “But men labor under a mistake...the improvements of ages have had but little influence on the essential laws of man's existence.” In an effort to uncover those “essential laws” Thoreau went to the woods: “I wished to live deliberately,” he says, “to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived. I did not wish to live what was not life, living is so dear;” What is often missed in Thoreau’s reflections from his 2-year excursion into the woodlands of Concord, Massachusetts, is the rigor with which he calculated, measured, and weighed those “essential facts of life.” Philosopher Frédéric Gros calls Thoreau’s “New Economics,” a theory that builds on the following axiom, which Thoreau establishes early in Walden: “The cost of a thing is the amount of what I will call life which is required to be exchanged for it, immediately or in the long run.” “The striking thing with Thoreau,” Gros argues, “is not the actual content of the argument. After all, sages in earliest Antiquity had already proclaimed their contempt for possessions…what impresses is the form of the argument. For Thoreau’s obsession with calculation runs deep…he says: keep calculating, keep weighing. What exactly do I gain, or lose?” In the century and a half since its publication, Thoreau’s economics – his methodology for apprehending the cost of a thing by weighing and measuring it against the dearness of life’s value – has been supplanted by allegiance to growth at all costs. But unlike the “mass of men” about which Thoreau writes in the mid-19th century, today’s society is burdened by more than just the labor of miscalculation. In today’s hyperconnected, surveillance economy, the mass of humanity has lost autonomy over that calculation, ceding authority to the commands of a new technocracy that governs the behavioral forces of our primitive biology through platforms scientifically engineered for addiction, supervision, and control.
