I want to talk about how to become obsessed with your goals. Why Should We Become Obsessed With Our Goals? It might sound a little intense, but Grant Cardone puts it best: "I suggest that you become obsessed about the things you want. Otherwise, you're going to spend a lifetime making up excuses as to why you didn't get the life that you wanted." Essentially, you either become obsessed with your goals and move forward in the life you want, or you'll dwell on excuses for why you didn't live the life you desire PROBLEM. You say you want something…but your actions… According to Robert Kiyosaki, "For many people, the power of their excuse is more powerful than their dreams." Life is coming at you full speed, and the challenges, problems, and excuses we face can often seem bigger than our dreams. Therefore, you must create reasons and goals that are bigger than your obstacles. Harv Eker summarizes it well: "You can have reasons, or you can have results. You can't have both." Making Your Goals a Must Robert Stuberg, a mentor of mine, often talks about how the real solution to creating an obsession with your goals is to make them a must. To live the life you dream of and achieve the goals you set, you must prioritize them above everything else. So, how do we do this? How do we make our priorities non-negotiable? Steps to Become Obsessed with Your Goals 1. Be Specific The biggest challenge most of us face is not knowing exactly what we want. It's super important to be very specific about your desires. Do you want more money? A better life? Improved relationships? A nicer car? What exactly do you want? What type of freedom with your time do you desire? Be clear about the specifics of your goals; specificity is the first step to achieving them 2. Make Commitments Once you know exactly what you want, you gotta commit to achieving it. You have to be ready to sacrifice something in order to get it. If you're not specific about what you want or the sacrifices you're willing to make, you won't get any closer to becoming obsessed with your goals. 3. Create Time in Your Day Allocate specific time every day to focus and concentrate on your goals. This daily focus is crucial because it helps you continually visualize your goals 4. Visualization The mind works in mysterious ways. The clearer and more real your goals become in your mind, the more doable they seem. Spend time every day visualizing your goals. The clearer you are about what you want, the more real it feels, and the more you want it. This visualization helps you become obsessed with your goals. 5. Daily Rituals Establish daily rituals that remind you of your goals. This can be as simple as looking at your goals, writing them down every day, or repeating specific affirmations like "I am going to be successful." Consistency in these rituals reinforces your goals and helps your subconscious mind work towards achieving the 6. Be Relentless and Never Give Up Relentlessly pursue your goals. Never give up. The more you pursue your goals every day, the more obsessed and focused you become on achieving them. RESOLVE 7. Don't Settle One of the biggest pitfalls is settling for less. As you encounter challenges and roadblocks, it's easy to think about settling. However, settling is the enemy of greatness. Don't settle for anything less than what you truly want in your life If you these steps, you will become obsessed with your goals, and as a result, you will get what you want. Read our book, The Score That Matters https://amzn.to/44qxsph The Learning Leader Show With Ryan Hawk Full show notes at www.LearningLeader.com Notes on this conversation with Cal Newport (Obsess over quality). Jewel obsessed over the quality of her work so much that she turned down a 1m dollar offer (even while living out of her car) because she needed time to make her work excellent. Obsess over the quality of what you produce, even if this means missing opportunities in the short term. Leverage the value of these results to gain more and more freedom in your efforts over the long term. Benjamin Franklin – He hired David Hall to create time freedom. He needed time to think, time to experiment. He gave up money in the short term to gain time freedom to create something for the future. There's no guarantee that it would pay off, but we all should think about how we can make investments that our future self would thank us for. Have fewer concurrent active projects. Instead of focusing on 10 things, focus on 2 or 3. Make it public. Share with your team. Be known as a leader who focuses on a few important objectives instead of 10 of them. Match your space to your work – Be in nature, Lin-Manuel Miranda wrote Hamilton in the Morris-Jumel Mansion, the oldest surviving house in Manhattan (served as headquarters for George Washington during the Battle of Harlem Heights, and home of Aaron Burr when he was Vice President), Neil Gaiman built a spartan, 8 sided writing shed that sits on low stilts and offers views on all sides of endless trees. Do Fewer Things: Limit Daily Goals – Cal learned this from his doctoral adviser at MIT. She was incredulous about Cal's attempts to switch back and forth between multiple academic papers. She preferred to get lost in a single project at a time. Cal was convinced that the slowness of working on just one important thing per day would hold him back. Work at a Natural Pace Don't rush your most important work. Allow it instead to unfold along a sustainable timeline, with variations in intensity over different timescales, and, when possible, executed in settings conducive to brilliance. Slow productivity emphatically rejects the performative rewards of unwavering urgency. Grand achievement is built on the steady accumulation of modest results over time, and you should give your efforts the breathing room and respect required to make them part of a life well lived, not an obstacle to it. Obsess over Quality By focusing intensely on the small number of activities that matter most to our jobs, you can find both the motivation and justification for slowness. Improve your taste. It's in the uneasy distance between our taste and our ability that improvement happens – aka in our drive to meet our own high standards. To combat the potential paralysis of perfectionism, think about giving yourself enough time to produce something great, but not unlimited time–focus on creating something good enough to catch the attention of people whose taste you care about but relieve yourself of the need to forge a masterpiece. Gather with people who share similar professional ambitions. When you combine the opinions of multiple practitioners, more possibilities and nuance emerge, and there's a focusing effect that comes from performing for a crowd. It's easy to mistake “do fewer things” for “accomplish fewer things” – but this understanding is backward. We work roughly the same number of hours each week regardless of the size of our task lists. Having more commitments simply increases the hours lost to overhead tax – the coordinating activities, such as meetings and email, needed to manage what's on your plate. The pandemic “zoom apocalypse,” in which many knowledge workers found themselves in Zoom meeting all day long, was caused in part by reaching a state in which overhead tax crowded out almost any time to actually complete tasks. Doing fewer things, in other words, makes us better at our jobs–not only psychologically but also economically and creatively. The Overhead Tax – A key property of overhead tax is that it tends to expand to fill as much time as it's provided. So long as a project is something that you've committed to, and it's not yet complete, it will tend to generate a continual tax in the form of check-in meetings, impromptu email conversations, and plain old mental space. Knowledge workers have no agreed-upon definition of what “productivity” actually means–incredibly unusual compared to other areas of our economy. Lacking a precise definition they defaulted to a crude approximation: pseudo-productivity – using visible activity as a proxy for useful professional accomplishment. Cal argues that the current burnout crisis is due, in part, to the combination of pseudo-productivity with more recent advances in mobile computing and digital communication that made unlimited work available at all times in all places. The result was an impossible internal tug of war, where there was always more to do, and never any hope of catching up. Busy exhaustion itself became your primary signal of usefulness. Slow productivity doesn't ask that you extinguish ambition. Humans derive great satisfaction from being good at what they do and producing useful things. Cal revisits the popular narrative of Jane Austen's writing career; a closer look at her life reveals a powerful case study for a slower approach. Busy Jane Austen was neither happy nor producing memorable work, while unburdened Jane Austen, writing contently at a quiet cottage, after her family decided to withdraw from a busy social calendar, transformed English literature. The goal of Slow Productivity is to propose an entirely new way for you, your small business, or your large employer to think about what it means to get things done; to rescue knowledge work from its increasingly untenable freneticism, and rebuild it to enable you to create things you're proud of without grinding yourself down along the way; and to offer a more humane and sustainable way to integrate professional efforts into a life well lived.

We have over 18 years experience of implementing various ISO's, covering a wide range of topics such as Quality, Sustainability, Information Security and Risk. With a 100% success rate, we're confident in our consistent approach to implementing ISO's, so much so that we've coined our own unique methodology. Our regular listeners may be familiar with the term ‘isology' from previous episodes referencing our online platform – the isologyhub. But what is isology exactly? Put simply, isology is our 7-step method for implementing any ISO Standard. Join Mel this week as she breaks down each of the 7 steps, including the planning, creation and review of an ISO Management System. You'll learn · Our experience implementing ISO's · The origin of isology · What is isology? · The seven steps of isology Resources · Isologyhub · Isology synopsis In this episode, we talk about: [00:25] Episode Summary – Mel Blackmore will be explaining our world leading methodology to implement any ISO Standard, which we've affectionately named ‘Isology'. [00:45] The creation of isology: We've been implementing ISO Standards for 18 years, starting with ISO 9001 and have since expanded our repertoire to over 20 ISO Standards covering risk, sustainability, quality and Information Security. The creation of the isology methodology has been a team effort from all of the consultants who have worked with Blackmores over the years, and is primarily built on best practice. [01:35] Step 1: Plan – Get a copy of the Standard, determine your scope, timescales, leadership commitment, resources and selecting a Certification Body. Timescales: This is typically around 6 months, but could be longer or shorter depending on your specific requirements. Resources: As an example, if you were looking to obtain ISO 14001 certification, you may need to appoint a sustainability champion. For ISO 27001 you'll need a representative from the IT department. Selecting a Certification Body: Ensure whichever Certification Body you choose is UKAS accredited. You can check this on the UKAS website. International listeners will need to verify on your country's national accreditation body website. [03:45] Step 2: Discover – Time to understand what you have in place already and what you're missing – this is done through a Gap Analysis. This will often involve an initial meeting with the leadership team to establish what you already have in place, i.e. relevant policies and procedures or any relevant objectives. We break this down step-by-step and document it all in a Gap Analysis, which will deduce your current level of compliance. From this an action plan can be created to indicate what needs to be done to become fully compliant, including assigning roles to assist with the Implementation. [05:30] Step 3: Expose - This is where we look at risks and opportunities related to your desired Standard (both internally and externally). This is typically done through a SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats) and PESTLE (Policital, Economic, Social, Technological, Legal and Ethical). In this stage you will also need to understand the key requirements of any relevant stakeholders, so this can include clients, subcontractors, regulatory bodies ect. A Risk Register may be created to capture the findings to be addressed later. Some ISO's require a Risk Register, others don't, but in our experience it's beneficial to have one regardless. Companies are also encouraged to create a Legal Register to keep track of all their statutory, regulatory and contractual requirements. [07:50] Step 4: Create – Time to review the requirements of the Standard in terms of documentation – and create what's needed. This includes capturing your way of working with documented Procedures, so make sure you have the relevant staff involved in their creation. Something to remember, you can have additional policy statements that aren't required by the Standard. If they are important to you, add them in! We're in a modern age now, gone are the days of paper manuals gathering dust on an office shelf. Software and applications may be where the bulk of your Management System documentation lives. For example, at Blackmores we use a combination of Monday.com and SharePoint to manage all of our day-to-day activities, including our own ISO 9001 compliant Management System. The key here is to make your Management System accessible for everyone. [10:20] Step 5: Launch – Once the Management System has found its home, you need to communicate it. Consider the type of launch you want and who will be involved. Make sure you encourage engagement with the Management System. Why should you Launch your Management System? Quite simply, there isn't much point in having controls in your business if no one knows about them! We have 2 key ways of supporting you with the launch of your Management system: 1) We can run an awareness session on your Management System either in person or via Teams. It can then be recorded and used as refresher / induction training. 2) Get access to the isologyhub – out online platform with a suite of over 200 ISO courses, training, tools and templates. [12:15] Step 6: Engage - After the launch you want to ensure that employees are fully engaged and they actually not only are aware of the policies and procedures that you've got in place, but they're actively using them. The only way to verify this is through Internal Audits – that's not just our opinion, that's a mandatory requirement of any ISO Standard. We can assist with conducting these Internal Audits, which double up as a dummy run ahead of your assessment visits. These audits are essentially a show and tell exercise to gather evidence that you're doing what you say your doing. [13:55] Step 7: Review - Time to take a step back and look at what's been achieved and what's been highlighted as areas for improvement through your Internal Audits. This is done at what we call a Management Review. These are typically conducted as meetings, but they don't have to be a meeting specifically. We've done a podcast covering other ways to conduct this review. At this Management Review you will collate data on the performance of your business in relation to the ISO Standard. The minutes must be recorded, as your Assessor will expect to see these as it's a mandatory requirement of any ISO Standard. If you'd like to learn more about what's involved with a Stage 1 and 2 Assessment, go back and listen to a previous episode. Don't have TIME to decorate your home? In this episode we determine if we lack time or we lack motivation? Sometimes our desire to make change is greater than our motivation to actually decorate and we confuse ourselves into thinking we have no time, when the reality is that we lack the motivation. In an effort to find time when we think we have none, I teach you how to do a time audit so you can see the holes in your day when productivity can start. Then I give you five creative ideas for creating more time and/or motivating you into action. 1. Have a one week no screen time rule and see ALL the time that magically appears 2. Swapping with a friend (childcare, meal prep, or man power) 3. Have a Power Hour (at the beginning or end of your day) where you are waking early or going to bed late so you can have uninterrupted time in your day to get your work done. 4. Give yourself a carrot (an external motivator) for reaching your goal 5. Accountability (small group is best, you'll hear why and you'll also learn a suggestion for making it more fun for everyone) You CAN create more time if you want it, but the question that needs to be asked and the answer revealed in truth...how motivated are you to create that time to make change happen? In today's She Doesn't Settle episode I'm getting straight to it and talking to you about the importance of prioritizing your goal and a few things you can do. Listen, it's one thing to declare a goal and it's an entirely other thing to put in the work. You can't just add it to the long list of to-do's - you've got to clear space and make time for the actions that allow you to work towards that goal. Not only will it allow you to make progress, you'll feel a heck of a lot better in the process! If you have goals that are important to you (and I know you do!), you'll need to listen in. Reminder: The doors to the She Doesn't Settle group program are OPEN! I've just recently launched an official website for it, that includes all the details and a link for you to schedule a call to discuss/learn more. Make sure you check it out here.
