Why Administrators?

Why have an administrator? What can an administrator do in terms of the relationships around the school? Steve Brubaker makes the case that administrators inhabit and manage the complex meeting place of all the people involved in a school. It's a position of influence to be used not to lord it over others but to serve them. “Administrators exist to serve the servants,” says Steven. And schools that lack these people are hampered in their efforts to grow. Specifically, administrators are in a position to nurture growth in these two ways: Valuing the diversity – each person with whom or for whom we labor is worthwhile, and it is one of the administrator's primary roles to reveal and maximize that worth. Promoting the unity – helping all our people speak a common language, doing a lot of listening (which includes creating opportunities for listening), doing a lot of communicating (before, around, and during decision-making), and fostering shared experiences makes this a potent second role for an administrator. Steven develops both of those roles and also provides practical elaboration on the admin/board relationship and the admin/teacher relationship. Bonus: (from the discussion time in the original presentation) How can you go about growing into these responsibilities as an administrator if you're in a situation where the board currently has those responsibilities? My leadership style focuses on being open and creating a work environment where team members feel like family, helping brandiD employees thrive both personally and professionally. The biggest leadership lessons come from the positive and negative examples of leaders in your own life. For me, my father's approach to running a family business emphasized kindness and treating team members with respect. Other leaders taught me the significance of autonomy and empowering employees to take ownership of their work, fostering innovation and confidence within the team. If you're developing your own leadership style, be sure to take time for self-reflection, learn from past experiences, and continually seek knowledge through books and podcasts like "The Business of You." Quotes “One of the reasons I think people start businesses, entrepreneurs launch things, besides the fact that there's a problem they're trying to solve. You know, we also get to create our work environment.” “Certainly one thing that's always been important to me, and I don't even think I was conscious of it at the beginning, actually, it's like just a friendliness, helpful nature. I think our whole team has that.” “I'm a very big proponent of being around positivity. I think life is short. I've said that in other episodes, and I don't have time for drama, I don't have time for negativity, I just want there to be as much positivity in my day to day life as possible.” “I would say my leadership style is I'm open, I want to know more than just what's going on in people's lives. Besides their work day and their crafts. I want people to work in their strengths, I want them to feel happy about being in the work environment that they're in, I don't want them to feel stressed. I think life carries enough stress around, it brings enough stress to all of us. So I want it to be just kind of a pleasant environment, but that is very innovative and cutting edge and where people can learn. And I want to foster people's ability to learn and, and grow personally and professionally. Those are all things that are very important to me. So I think my style is just very kind of open. And trusting.” “Good leaders welcome people on their team that are smarter than them and better than them and certain skill sets, I think that's a huge part of success.” “My ability to grow as a leader is so deeply tied into my personal growth that I've learned in more recent years, particularly around mindset, but knowing that my company isn't going to grow unless I personally grow to that level has been very eye opening.” “Take stock of people you've worked for, what did you like, what didn't you like, do the things you liked and don't do the things you don't like, you know, it's really that simple. “Read books about great leaders, it doesn't matter what industry they're from, or if they're political, or what it might be. But just reading their history and reading about their characteristics and their traits, also is very eye opening.” Links mentioned in this episode: The Five Dysfunctions of a Team: A Leadership Fable by Patrick M. A big part of what keeps you alive—among other things—is nitrogen. The plants you eat need it to grow, so for centuries farmers have been applying it to soil to make their acreage more productive.  Prior to the 20th century, nitrogen fertilizer used to come from animal feces, blood, and bones—which is still common in organic agriculture today—but most row crops these days are fertilized with human-made nitrogen, produced by a high-energy reaction known as the Haber–Bosch process. (Or if you take Fritz Haber's view of things rather than Carl Bosch's, you might just call it the Haber process.) The creation of synthetic nitrogen is a big reason we can feed eight billion humans today, since it enables us to produce a lot more food from the same acre of land. But, there's much to be desired about how we fertilize crops today. Not only is it highly energy-intensive to fix nitrogen from the air and turn it into something bioavailable to plants, but the application of all that nitrogen also creates major runoff pollution and air emissions problems from our farms. But what if, instead of doing the hard work of turning nitrogen into ammonia ourselves, we could simply coax soil microbes to do it for us? That's what a startup founded in 2011 called Pivot Bio is doing. They've gene-edited microbes to restore their natural ability to convert atmospheric nitrogen and deliver it to crops by adhering to the roots of the plants. These nitrogen-fixing microbes are applied either in the furrow at planting or directly on the seed before planting, forging a symbiotic relationship that allows the plant to thrive with less synthetic nitrogen. And we've got Pivot Bio's president and chief operating officer Lisa Nunez Safarian on the show to talk all about it. Nitrogen, it turns out, is very big business, with the global fertilizer business nearly $200 billion in value. As you'll hear, Pivot Bio has raised a whopping $600 million-plus from venture investors with a valuation nearing $2 billion—or one percent of the entire global fertilizer industry. Lisa tells us in this conversation that Pivot's microbes were used on three million cropland acres in 2022, reducing the need for a huge amount of synthetic fertilizer, and generating about $50 million in 2022 revenue for Pivot Bio. Even if you don't know much about agriculture, I promise this conversation is a comprehensible and riveting one that showcases the potential for biotechnology to slow climate change, clean up the environment, and produce more food with fewer resources. Discussed in this episode Lisa and Paul both endorse The Alchemy of Air by Thomas Hager. Lisa recommends reading The Infinite Game by Simon Sinek as well as The Five Dysfunctions of a Team and The Advantage (both by Patrick M. Lencioni). Paul recommends Resetting the Table by Rob Paarlberg, who we had on this show! More about Lisa Nunez Safarian Lisa Nunez Safarian leads commercial, manufacturing, and product development at Pivot Bio. Dedicating her career to advancing agriculture and helping farmers achieve better outcomes, Lisa oversees the day-to-day operations to ensure we are meeting the nitrogen needs of our customers. Prior to joining Pivot Bio, Lisa held several leadership positions at Bayer and Monsanto. Most recently, she served as President, Crop Science North America for Bayer where she launched innovative technologies and go-to-market strategies that grew the business. Before this role, Lisa served as Vice President, North America for Monsanto where she was responsible for strategy, execution, and commercial transformation of the $12B U.S., Canada, and Latin America North seeds, traits, licensing and crop protection businesses.

Hast du gerade was mit deinem Chef? Was, natürlich, primär Hochqualifizierte in dem Unternehmen hält.

Her leadership was put to the test at YRC Worldwide when the troubled trucking company sought her leadership to reduce turnover of their 600+ sales force during an economic downturn that threatened the company with bankruptcy.   Natalie is a member of the advisory boards of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, AWESOME Leaders, and the American Logistics Aid Network (ALAN). She earned her undergraduate degree from Central Michigan University. Natalie's LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/natalieputnam/ (https://www.linkedin.com/in/natalieputnam/) DeliveryCircle: https://www.deliverycircle.com/ (https://www.deliverycircle.com/) WHAT YOU DISCOVER IN THIS EPISODE: The question Natalie asked led to her choosing a business career. How to communicate directly and respectfully. How to increase communication effectiveness. The question that helps you set your sights higher and accelerate your career. What it was like working in Jimmy Hoffa's “local” for her first big job. What it was like being one the first women in management at her company. Sales stories from 8 Mile in Detroit (yes, the same place as Eminem hails from) The single strategy that boosts your team's productivity. A personal example of the shadow-side of stress. The hardest layoff Natalie ever had to make. How to summon your courage. The “finger print” strategy to get your big idea accepted by the C-Suite. Strategies to conquer impost syndrome. Why you should add music to your meeting. HIGHLIGHTS: Advice for underrepresented groups in C-Suite: Discard the fear. If you want to lead, then lead. Be female but compete on competence. Show up with gravitas. Lower voice has more command. What traits Natalie is looking for when hiring new people: They need to be ambitious, eager and passionate. Be humble. Be smart emotionally and intelligently. How employees should communicate their big ideas: You should socialize it with someone else before bringing it to the meeting. Your big idea is not about making a name for yourself but making the company better. Tweak your ideas and let other people put their fingerprints on it. We all want to generate a ton of motivated seller leads, but using radio? Yes, radio may feel a bit antiquated, but according to Chris Arnold, most real estate owners are over 50 years old and still listen to the radio. According to https://www.radioworld.com/news-and-business/programming-and-sales/radio-listening-audiences-rebound-despite-pandemic-impact (Nielsen), even beyond Chris’ expertise, radio listening is on the rise, and people are tuning in with greater frequency to news/talk formats. Those with greater spending optimism are more likely to be heavy AM/FM radio listeners. Radio advertising provides high-quality leads, as the people who take action and call you are serious about doing a deal. And since most investors are using the other strategies where they are less qualified or serious about doing a deal, it could be more efficient for you and your team. Chris is the owner of Wholesaling Inc and the creator of the REI Radio program. He works with clients to get 100 ads per month, per station, for about $1,000 to $2,000 per month. Chris shares tips on leveraging radio to find real estate deals and why radio is the best marketing, yet most overlooked, solution for real estate investors.  Key Insights: Chris’ real estate journey  Why virtual real estate was the way to go, even before COVID The 3 Freedoms we all want: Freedom of resources, freedom of time, freedom of thought, freedom of location  The solution provider approach to real estate investing The two categories of lead generation Why radio is the perfect channel for real estate investors Reaching the prime audience of people aged 50+  The cost of using radio is one of the most affordable marketing The mistake most people make when advertising on radio  How to analyze a radio advertising buy  If you buy marketing right, you will net a high ROI Negotiating radio advertising rates How you obtain immediate leads advertising on the radio The two main things you get with radio marketing that you don’t get anywhere else Radio is a respective form of marketing that provides you instant credibility and celebrity status Radio marketing is excellent for new real estate investors Generating motivated seller leads without the headaches  How radio instills recognition and trust for you and your business Radio is a great way to generate off-market leads What type of real estate investors should use radio advertising The process to follow for successful radio marketing The best way to handle radio live leads The ROI of radio marketing compared to other channels The most competitive radio markets and how to differentiate yourself Transitioning from success to significance What marketers like about radio Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it’s time to pause and reflect. We’ve heard a lot of stories on ScaleUp Radio over the past few episodes, of people starting their business after working for the family firm, or leaving university and stumbling into a career - but William Copley from Armstrong Bell did none of those things. He went to New York and signed a 3-album deal with a major record company. Thankfully, for his clients at least, the music dream didn’t last and now Will runs Armstrong Bell -  a telecommunications company with a staff of 16. Listening to Will, you’ll hear that it’s not been an easy journey to get to this point, but he’s managed to create a company that has it’s own identity in a busy marketplace. As always on ScaleUp Radio, there was a lot of ground covered, including:  - What separates Armstrong Bell from the other telecommunications companies that are out there?  - How best to divorce a business partner, and particularly about buying them out of the business. Is there a “right” way to do it?  - Identifying the best process to remove yourself from the day to day business operations - without losing your feel for the business. Will employed a Business Manager - Rob - and the two of them shaped how the business should run, and how Will could take a step back from the day-to-day tasks.  - How big a part imagination should play in the growth of your business  - Why failing quickly is an important lesson to learn Will is very deliberate in his answers, but what’s refreshing is his desire to keep learning, keep growing - and not stand still. I think you’re going to enjoy this one. This is also the last episode of 2019. Don’t worry, there’s more to come in 2020, but we’re taking a couple of weeks off for Christmas. Do you struggle with wanting to improve your Leadership skills or develop personally to be a better leader? On this episode of Coffee Break, Chad Lingafelt shares the 5 books that helped him develop personally and the impact it had on the way he leads our organization. Book 1: Turn the Ship Around - L. David Marquet Turn the Ship Around! is the true story of how the Santa Fe skyrocketed from worst to first in the fleet by challenging the U.S. Navy's traditional leader-follower approach. Struggling against his own instincts to take control, he instead achieved the vastly more powerful model of giving control. No matter your business or position, you can apply Marquet's radical guidelines to turn your own ship around. The payoff: a workplace where everyone around you is taking responsibility for their actions, where people are healthier and happier, where everyone is a leader. Book 2: Powerful - Patty McCord McCord advocates practicing radical honesty in the workplace, saying good-bye to employees who don’t fit the company’s emerging needs, and motivating with challenging work, not promises, perks, and bonus plans. Her road-tested advice, offered with humor and irreverence, provides readers a different path for creating a culture of high performance and profitability. Powerful will change how you think about work and the way a business should be run. Book 3: Radical Candor - Kim Scott The idea is simple: You don't have to choose between being a pushover and a jerk. Using Radical Candor—avoiding the perils of Obnoxious Aggression, Manipulative Insincerity, and Ruinous Empathy—you can be kind and clear at the same time. Radical Candor is about caring personally and challenging directly, about soliciting criticism to improve your leadership and also providing guidance that helps others grow. It focuses on praise but doesn't shy away from criticism—to help you love your work and the people you work with. Book 4: The 5 Dysfunctions of a Team - Patrick M. Lencioni Lencioni's utterly gripping tale serves as a timeless reminder that leadership requires as much courage as it does insight. Throughout the story, Lencioni reveals the five dysfunctions which go to the very heart of why teams even the best ones-often struggle. He outlines a powerful model and actionable steps that can be used to overcome these common hurdles and build a cohesive, effective team. Book 5: Traction - Gino Wickman Do you have a grip on your business, or does your business have a grip on you? In Traction, you’ll learn the secrets of strengthening the six key components of your business. You’ll discover simple yet powerful ways to run your company that will give you and your leadership team more focus, more growth, and more enjoyment.

Hi everyone! In this Tip of the Day episode, I'm talking about a book that I recently read called The Ideal Team Player: How to Recognize and Cultivate The Three Essential Virtues by Patrick M. Lencioni. This book was recommended in the Facebook group and I finally got the chance to read through it, and I really found a ton of awesome nuggets of information. I value reading good leadership books to grow as a group practice owner, and so anytime I read an amazing book, I like to give that recommendation out to other group practice owners so that you can use that time to read a little bit and learn how to lead a little bit better! In the episode, I discuss: three things to look for to find your ideal team players (therapists, employees, admins, etc.): hungry, humble, and smart a summary of the book how to tell if someone is hungry, humble, and smart in your group practice how to apply these ideas specifically to a group practice setting an exercise to map out where your current team players fall in these categories what I got out of the book This episode is sponsored by TherapyNotes. TherapyNotes is an EHR software that helps behavioral health professionals manage their practice with confidence and efficiency. I use TherapyNotes in my own group practice and love its amazing support team, billing features, and scheduling capabilities. It serves us well as a large group practice owner.

They talk about how Sindye started the business as a way to earn income while spending time with her kids, the impact culture has on both its own business and the community around it, and a peek into her brand new book Relationship Roadmap, chock full of strategies on how to create a culture of excellence.   Key Takeaways: [4:53] The holiday season can be one of joy and merriment, but it can also be a struggle. Kris reminds us that we aren’t alone, and on the Child Care Success website, you can find ways not only to grow your business but also to work on your mindset and live a happier life. [8:28] Sindye started in child care after having her first daughter and seeing how much she was making a difference in the families around her. She combined her business savvy and high-value childcare skills into making a full-blown new career for herself and it wasn’t long before she was full and turning clients away. She then opened a small center which filled up and moved up to a larger center licensed with a capacity of 120. [12:25] Sindye loves her job as the Director of Marketing and sees it an opportunity to impact and touch as many lives as possible. [14:52] Sindye shares the most heartwarming and adorable (sorry Sindye’s husband!) story about how a school dance in 1988 led to them being each other’s soul mates for life. [19:54] Culture affects everything from the turnover of staff and employee hiring and retention to corporate engagement. Sindye explains how quality care in our teachers affects emotional aspects, financial opportunities, and even a child’s brain development. [24:13] If you have a positive and caring culture in your childcare environment, your team will be helpful and positive. They will be solution based, and excited to contribute because of a mutual trust and respect. [26:48] It takes time to develop a collaborative culture but there are some steps to begin right away. Sindye’s answer might not be super popular or easy to hear — the culture reflects the leadership. Also, no matter what level of status an employee has, they could always actively strive to communicate in an approachable and positive way. [30:02] It is important for leaders to be aware of how they communicate with their team, their mindset, and how they manage stress effectively. [36:36] While the staff will probably eat all the donuts you get them, Sindye shares that real inspiration comes providing structure and a strong foundation. Appreciation and connection are two huge things that cost no money but make a big difference. [47:38] Sindye recommends finding a financial advisor to help you, no matter where you are in your journey. [53:08] Sindye defines a child care rockstar as someone that works to positively impact the early years, and in turn, makes a lifelong difference. Today's Guest is Joel Kessel, of Kessel Communication and he is a public relations professional. "I am the founder of Kessel Communications (http://kesselcommunications.com/), a strategic communications agency that simply helps businesses communicate better. By doing this, we help companies strengthen their credibility, build positive reputations and increase brand awareness. I’m blessed with an incredible team of consulting partners that is dedicated to every client we are fortunate to partner with and serve. I provide thoughts, ideas, tips and advice on how you can get your story in front of those who matter to your organization. A main focus of my content is on working with media reporters so you can get consistent coverage and awareness about your product, service or organization." - Joel Kessel Key Takeaways Go through a basic marketing/communications assessment. Don't let the project fall on one person's shoulders. Include everyone. "People support what they help create." It's best to share information, be helpful, and then find a solution. Take a step back and focus on everything that is on your plate. "If I like you I'll listen to you, if I trust you I'll do business with you."  “A master in the art of living draws no sharp distinction between his work and his play; his labor and his leisure; his mind and his body; his education and his recreation. He hardly knows which is which. He simply pursues his vision of excellence through whatever he is doing, and leaves others to determine whether he is working or playing. To himself, he always appears to be doing both.” ~ L.P.
