Welcome to the daily304 – your window into Wonderful, Almost Heaven, West Virginia. Today is Friday, Oct. 18, 2024. The former Parkersburg CVB building has been repurposed to support arts in the community…coworking spaces provide resources and meeting space for remote workers…and a proposed hiking trail in Mercer County was once used by Civil War troops…on today's daily304. #1 – From NEWS & SENTINEL – Artsbridge has purchased the former Convention and Visitors Bureau building to be its new headquarters. “A new location still in downtown Parkersburg means Artsbridge continues its long partnership with other arts, entertainment and service organizations in the Mid-Ohio Valley,” said Karen Waller, Artsbridge board member. The new facility, located at 350 Seventh St., represents an investment not only in the organization but in the very fabric of the community. With this building, Artsbridge will have the capacity to enhance its programs, host more events and create a welcoming space for collaboration and support. Meanwhile, the Greater Parkersburg Convention & Visitors Bureau has relocated its welcome center to 113 Ann Street. Read more: https://www.newsandsentinel.com/news/business/2024/10/artsbridge-buys-former-cvb-building-to-serve-as-new-headquarters/ #2 – From FIRST ASCENT – Before the rise of remote and hybrid work, young professionals were restricted to confining cubicles and old-school office environments. Even so, some remote workers yearn to be in a structured, professional environment away from productivity-draining distractions at home. Enter local coworking spaces—shared office spaces where remote workers from different companies and industries can work alongside one another as if they are in the office for the day. These spaces, with their modern, open floor plans, typically offer amenities that professionals crave, such as secure Wi-Fi, printing stations, and private rooms for meetings. Base Camp, First Ascent and Ascend WV's coworking space in Morgantown, for example, even offers standing desks for members to stretch their legs, and a kitchenette to prepare snacks and lunch. Are you a West Virginia grad who has a remote or hybrid position? First Ascent, the program specifically designed to help young professionals launch their careers in the mountains of West Virginia, offers coworking benefits through free access to its six Base Camp locations across the state. This hiking/bicycle trail would stretch from the vicinity of Camp Creek State Park to the Bluestone River on the former Bluestone Land & Lumber Company logging railroad along Camp Creek. A grant of over $360,000 from the West Virginia Division of Highways Recreational Trails Project with a 20% county match is funding the project, according to Mercer County Commission President Bill Archer. Civil War scholars say the trail is likely part of the path taken by officers and troops of the 23rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry to the Battle of Princeton in May 1862, he added. Imagine a luxurious escape, a hidden coastal sanctuary that's very charming yet sophisticated. Could there be such a place? There is, and as travel writer Terrie Guthrie shares on this episode of Big Blend Radio's "Food, Wine & Travel" Show with IFWTWA, it's Watersound Club's Camp Creek Inn on the 30A corridor in the Florida Panhandle. Brixton Metals CEO Gary Thompson discusses the second round of drill campaign results from the Thorn project in Northwest British Columbia. The results include hole 291, which revealed a gold zone and a copper zone. The gold zone aligns with a Northeast trending gold zone called Talisker, with high-grade gold, silver, and copper mineralization. The porphyry system at depth shows potential for expansion, and the presence of molybdenum is noteworthy. The company is also exploring new porphyry targets and preparing to drill at the Trapper gold target.
Brixton Metals CEO, Gary Thompson, provides a corporate update on the company's drilling activities at the Thorn Project in the Golden Triangle, British Columbia. They have completed two 1,500-meter holes and are currently drilling a third hole at Camp Creek. They have also started drilling at the Cirque target, a new copper porphyry. Thompson discusses the placement of drill holes and the importance of the geophysical model in guiding future drilling. He also announces the vending of the Atlin Goldfields project to Eldorado Gold and the clean-up of royalties on the Thorn Project. Thompson mentions the upcoming assay results and the anticipation of news from the Hog Heaven drilling project.
There's nothing dramatic about the Still Creek trail. It's basically an easy-breezy trail that heads out over a ridgeline saddle from a campground set among old-growth Douglas-fir trees and a creek in the foothills of Mount Hood. Just a walk in the woods. The most dramatic part is the beginning. Winding through the stout tree pillars, we cross the surging Camp Creek. Hence, our walk begins with a piano and woodwind fanfare. For the instrument palette I'm embracing solo clarinet and solo flute again after a years-long absence. Also glass marimba. As a performer my keyboarding style has always been loose, but on the glass marimba I go for an almost arhythmic, tumbledown effect, mirroring the creek waters. The wildlife we hear along the way are the continent's smallest songbirds: Golden-crowned Kinglets, Pacific Wrens, and Chestnut-backed Chickadees. Ironically, the little creek we hear half way through is an unnamed tributary, not Still Creek itself, which I do not lay eyes or ears on. The trail crosses over this little nameless creek in a pretty setting: crystal clear water pools against a decaying log; the waters slowly meandering through its crosscut. A still creek. This interesting little scene is what is pictured on the cover. Generally speaking, I try to pair the cover image with the mood of the music. The bright orb of the sun refracting on the water, and the warm glow illuminating the submerged fir needles seemed to match the glimmering synth pads and dark, woody piano in the score.I think the woodwinds add a romantic feel, and I have to say: it did feel romantic with the afternoon light filtering through the canopy. Not in a romance way, but in a, you know, a tender way. Just connecting with the space. Opening up to it. Feeling it. This is a good primer for our next installment, Castle Canyon Soundwalk, which is even more soundscape-forward, featuring a more impressionistic, even experimental score. Very open. For now, enjoy Still Creek Soundwalk. I love the name. (I chose this trail half just because I liked the name, and half because it wasn't covered with snow.) Thanks again for reading, for listening, for coming along this journey.Still Creek Soundwalk will be available on all streaming platforms (Spotify, Apple, Tidal, Amazon, YouTube…) tomorrow next Friday, May 3. (Oops! I forgot to update my calendar after nudging the date.) This is a public episode. Lawrenceville Police say Hyundai and Kia thefts are on the rise Gwinnett County Public Schools Launches AI Policy Lab Lilburn Secures Federal Funding to Enhance Police Operations and Camp Creek Projects Plus, my conversation with Leah McGrath from Ingles Markets about the best breakfast choices. All of this and more is coming up on the Gwinnett Daily Post podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen daily and subscribe! Break 1: TOM WAGES STORY 1: Lawrenceville Police say Hyundai and Kia thefts are up Lawrenceville police have issued a warning to owners of certain Hyundai and Kia models, urging increased vigilance due to a surge in thefts. The vulnerability, tied to an absent security feature in the ignition switch, affects vehicles manufactured between 2011 and 2021 that use traditional turnkey ignition systems instead of push-button starts. In response, Kia has supplied steering wheel locks to the police department for distribution to local residents. Vehicle owners from the specified years can obtain a lock by reaching out to Capt. Salvador Ortega via email. To further safeguard their vehicles, police suggest implementing additional security measures such as installing kill switches, battery disconnects, alarms, and GPS tracking devices, and ensuring cars are parked in well-lit, secure areas. STORY 2: Gwinnett County Public Schools Launches AI Policy Lab Gwinnett County Public Schools, in collaboration with the EdSAFE AI Alliance, has announced the creation of an AI Policy Lab. This initiative is dedicated to fostering the safe and ethical implementation of artificial intelligence within educational settings. The lab will provide comprehensive policy recommendations alongside educational materials aimed at teachers, students, and parents, emphasizing practical applications of AI. Dr. Calvin J. Watts, Superintendent of GCPS, highlighted the critical importance of instilling responsible AI practices among students to equip them adequately for future professional environments. This endeavor enhances GCPS's ongoing commitment to AI education, building on the foundation set by the AI-Future Ready pilot initiated in 2019. It also contributes to broader national discussions focused on establishing guidelines that ensure AI is used in ways that are safe, responsible, inclusive, and beneficial within the educational sphere. STORY 3: Lilburn gets federal funds for police, Camp Creek efforts Lilburn has successfully obtained federal funding amounting to $1.8 million through the 2024 Consolidated Appropriations Act, earmarked for two pivotal projects. The allocation will be divided equally between enhancing public safety and environmental preservation efforts. The first half of the funding supports the Tri-City Connect Program, a collaborative effort with Lawrenceville and Snellville. This initiative aims to bolster public safety by creating a video and data sharing platform. It encourages residents and businesses to voluntarily register their security cameras, facilitating quicker resolution of criminal activities by law enforcement agencies. The remaining funds are allocated to the stabilization of Camp Creek. This project is vital for maintaining the integrity of the 4.2-mile Camp Creek Greenway Trail, a cherished community asset for recreation and nature engagement. U.S. Representative Lucy McBath has been instrumental in securing these funds, demonstrating her dedication to advancing the welfare and safety of the community. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.874.3200 for more info. We'll be right back. Break 2: INGLES 2 STORY 4: Gwinnett Clean & Beautiful Recognized with State And National Awards In March, Gwinnett Clean & Beautiful was distinguished for its dedication to the objectives of Keep America Beautiful. The organization received the prestigious Governor's Circle Award at the state level and was further recognized with the President's Circle Recognition Award on a national scale. Executive Director Schelly Marlatt expressed profound appreciation for these honors and reiterated the organization's commitment to environmental stewardship. Among the highlighted initiatives were the Earth Day recycling event and the Great Gwinnett Wetlands Cleanup, both emblematic of the organization's efforts to uphold Gwinnett County as an exemplar of cleanliness, sustainability, and natural beauty. For individuals seeking further information on the organization's activities or wishing to participate in future events, visit www.GwinnettCB.org. Growing up in a white family in the ’50s can sometimes lead to confusion about race, especially when racial discrimination was at its peak. How does color matter if everyone is the same- everyone is human. Black people aren’t supposed to be treated as downcasts in our society. And because of these discriminations in the ‘50s, children who are now adults end up in confusion as to why black people didn’t matter before when in the end, we were all human. “Our relationship faded, but not really. Even though I did not see her. My memory of her is still deep in my heart. She helped me to always feel loved even if I had disappeared for hours riding my bike and caused her to worry. She always forgave me. This is one of my experiences.” - Mary Sue Rabe Growing up in the segregated south in the ‘50s has led little Mary into confusion as to why Black people weren’t treated equally as White people. How does it make sense to a child that the loving Black caregiver was not treated rightly by society and even her family? In this episode, Mary Sue shares her own experience of confusion on how the people who loved her most were not treated equally. She also gives tribute to one of the caregivers who loved her the most, a loving Black woman named Bee. What you will learn from this episode: Learn how racial discrimination back in the ‘50s had an effect on a child’s point of view on the different races and how it can cause possible confusion Discover the innocence of a child towards the unequal treatment of White people to Black people in the 1950’s Find out how Black people were treated in the ‘50s, specifically in the segregated south area in Texas Link to a Free Resource: Stand There and Look Pretty Darlin’ by Mary Sue Rabe Topics Covered: 00:58 - Mary shares how she discovered her father was a “plantation owner”, a job in which she was ashamed 01:21 - How Mary realized that their farm is a plantation wherein Black people work in 03:00 - How a loving black woman changed Mary’s life: the story of Bee 04:20 - Mary explained what Bee does around the house and when taking care of the children 08:28 - Mary tells about their cabin in Camp Creek 09:19 - Mary shares her experience in fishing with Bee and some of the sweet moments she had with Bee 12:10 - How fear came about at Bee when she couldn’t find little Mary Sue 13:39 - Mary shares the sad news about Bee’s death back when she was a junior in college 14:47 - Different races, same sweet memories: how Bee changed Mary Sue’s life and the memories kept within her heart Key Takeaways: “As a child, I witnessed that the people who cared for me and that I was very fond of, were not treated as equals. The situation has caused me much confusion about race.” - Mary Sue Rabe “Her earrings were broom straws placed in the holes in her ears to keep them open. When our family went on a trip in 1960 we bought her some souvenir red ball stud earrings, which took the place of the straw. I don't know why it took us so long to get her some earrings.” - Mary Sue Rabe “Considering I played with dolls so much, Bee decided to make a quilt for my baby dolls. Since the quilt was small, so were the strips of cloth that were used to make it. I still wonder how she did the sewing such small stitches with her bent, naughty, arthritic fingers. I still have this doll quilt.” - Mary Sue Rabe “As my father employed a permanent housekeeper to live with us, Bee was no longer needed on weekends or so my dad thought, but I still needed her. I needed the stability of Bee on Saturday nights. My dad and I did not communicate about what I needed. And he was unaware of how important and how deeply connected I was to Bee. Not being with her on Saturdays was another loss for me.” - Mary Sue Rabe Connect with Mary Sue Rabe: https://marysuerabe.com https://womenhealingtheworld.com Book: Stand There and Look Pretty Darlin'

Click here to download this podcast Israel was in a kairous moment. It was the time appointed by Heavenly Father. It was a fitting and the specific time God had appointed for their visitation. Yet, they failed to grasp the opportunity set before them. Indeed, most seemed completely blind to what was happening. They continued to run their shops, curse the government, meet their buddies at the bar, bet on the games, and take care of their families. History has proven that mankind has often missed God's visitations. He is visiting us again. Will you miss God's visitation? The religious and political leaders continued their game of politics; pushing and shoving for a better position and a bigger slice of the pie. Serious threats were straining the tenuous relationship with the Roman Prefect because of the zealots; particularly the zealot out of Galilee. He was a Nazarene portraying himself to be a prophet of God. The very thought was offensive! But large crowds were following him and he seemed to be persuading them with his new doctrine and his stunning ability to make them think miracles were happening. They seemed oblivious that the man standing before them, teaching on the temple steps and on the mountainside was the same one who had astounded them when He was twelve years of age. His grasp of Scripture and His ability to open the understanding of the common man, combined with the authority of His spirit and word, astonished the crowds but angered the spiritual leaders and the politicians. They had no idea this man was not the ordinary zealot or self-proclaimed prophet. He was God in the flesh. Even more curious was the inability of the Pharisees, Sadducees and priests to grasp the moment and to know the true identity of the man with the level of knowledge they possessed about the promise of Messiah and His coming. How is it possible for them to miss the timing and fail to see the Son of God when He stood in their very presence? The answer to that conundrum is the great danger being faced at this very moment by the church in the United States of America. The Pharisees, Sadducees, lawyers and priests of Jesus’s day were blinded by their preconceived notions, messianic charts, and political rhetoric. Their spiritual senses had been dulled by their secret sins, their form of godliness with a calloused spirit, their personal ambition, and their spiritual snobbery. The general populace was too busy trying to survive. They loved seeing the miracles and hearing the messages of hope spoken by this new prophet. It was great fun talking in the market place about his criticism of the Pharisees and Sadducees and their hypocrisy. But who had time to take seriously his call to lay down your life and follow him? It was the very few religious leaders, like Nicodemus and Joseph of Arimathea, who dared humble themselves and truly grasp the moment. Although thousands ate His miracle meals and saw the blind eyes open and the dead raised to life only one hundred and twenty faithfully waited in prayer for the “promise of the Father.” I wonder how many in America today will get past the political rhetoric and hear the voice of the Holy Spirit? I wonder how many pastors, professors and denominational leaders will turn off the “talking heads” and silence the news anchors to hear what God speaking? How many Christians will turn away from the riot scenes on their television and stop listening to the anger of their family members, co-workers and neighbors and let God show them what He is doing in America right now? It is not about Democrat or Republican. It is not about the haves and the have nots. It is not about the popular vote and the Electoral College. As significant as those things are… and they do hold significance, their great importance will only be realized if we can see how God is working at this critical juncture of American history. Three of the most politically charged times in modern U.S. history were seasons God was doing something far greater. The Crisis Point Of the Modern American Church The turn of the century was politically charged with progressivism, woman suffrage and racial inequality. God was about to address all of these social ills and political issues by pouring out His Holy Spirit. It all began in 1896 at the Schearer Schoolhouse near Camp Creek in Cherokee County, North Carolina. A congregation, led by a holiness preacher began to experience the baptism of the Holy Spirit with speaking in other tongues. This stunning work of God was also ignited on the west coast of the United States ten years later in Los Angeles, California. A humble African-American preacher, William Seymour, began holding meetings teaching the biblical experience of receiving the baptism of the Holy Spirit with the initial evidence of speaking in other tongues. The crowds grew until private homes could no longer hold them. They rented an abandoned building on Azuza Street that was only 2400 square feet in size. God was seeking to resolve the racial issues of America by the great outpouring of the Holy Spirit. Blacks, whites, Hispanics all came to hear this former slave preach the Word of God and to seek the baptism of the Holy Spirit. The Pentecostal movement swept across America like a great tidal wave. America and the world were healing from the wounds of World War II in the late 1940’s when God stepped in with a miraculous healing ministry and a fresh out pouring of His Holy Spirit. Jack Coe, a tent evangelist who began preaching while he was still serving in the army during World War II. Oral Roberts with his “Canvas Cathedral” that would seat three thousand and more. Gordon Lindsay, T. L. Osborn, and others began crossing the United States with their tent meetings and faith healing. While controversy surrounded their work, America was experiencing spiritual healing by a fresh out pour of the Holy Spirit and truly amazing physical healings. Dr. Billy Graham was invited to Los Angeles, California in September 1949. A large tent that seated six thousand people was set up in a parking lot. It was later enlarged to seat nine thousand. As the crowds grew and overflowed the tent the three week meeting was extended. Thousands came to Christ including several celebrates. This was the national-wide launching of the Billy Graham crusades. God was healing what man and politics could not heal. The 1960’s saw America was being torn and divided. The ravages of an “unpopular war”, the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, college “sit ins”, Haight Ashbury love in, hippies, flower children, LSD, the killing of Bobby Kennedy, and the Watts riots shook our nation. Into this cauldron of anger, hate, free sex, and “turning on and dropping out”, the Jesus People and the Charismatic Renewal came transforming lives. Thousands of teenagers and college students were delivered from drugs and immoral lifestyles as they came to Christ on the beaches of California, in coffee houses of the Pacific Northwest, on the college campus in Berkley, and in home Bible studies. Businessmen and business women were finding salvation and the baptism of the Holy Spirit through Full Gospel Businessmen and Women’s Aglow.0 The Episcopal and Catholic churches were coming alive through Sunday night charismatic renewal Bible studies and hundreds of lukewarm Pentecostal churches experienced a fresh out pouring of the Holy Spirit. God was doing what the social engineering of the “Great Society” could not. America has reached another crisis point. Progressivism and the New World Order are seeking to change culture with political correctness and tolerance, demanding the Christian church embrace women’s rights, same-sex marriage and the LGBT agenda. Our cities are being divided blue and red, minorities are feeling disenfranchised, and our first responders are serving at great risk. As the world hurdles headlong into the last days with Lucifer setting up his one-world agenda many in the church are moving apostate participating in same-sex marriages, welcoming transgender members, and preaching a compromised Gospel. God has His agenda. And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions: And also upon the servants and upon the handmaids in those days will I pour out my spirit. And I will shew wonders in the heavens and in the earth, blood, and fire, and pillars of smoke. The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and the terrible day of the LORD come. And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the LORD shall be delivered: for in mount Zion and in Jerusalem shall be deliverance, as the LORD hath said, and in the remnant whom the LORD shall call (Joel 2:28-32 KJV). Can you hear the voice of God calling His church to a new outpouring of His Spirit? While the culture grows dark with evil and the streets are filled with looters and angry voices; while men and women burn with lustful passions and every thought of their imagination is only evil, God’s eyes are searching across the nation looking for the righteous ones through whom He can show Himself mighty. America is not lost, not yet. This is the hour of our visitation. The greatest spiritual awakening of this generation, maybe the greatest in all of history, is before us right now. God desires to pour out His Spirit on our nation one more time, healing our damaged emotions; bring peace to the war zones of our inner cities; uniting the blacks, whites, Hispanics and Asians in the divine love that can only come from Holy Spirit. This is day of our visitation. The question remains. Will we seize the moment or will we be like the Pharisees and Sadducees?
