Cheryl, an author, speaker, physical therapist, martial artist, dancer, former chronic pain patient and a survivor is the host of the popular Femininja Project podcast. At the age of 36, she hit rock bottom and became terribly depressed and hopeless, when she was told her chronic pain would never let her live the life she wanted. She eventually fired her medical team and began to explore other, non-traditional healing modalities (acupuncture, reflexology) that allowed her to once again experience the joy of movement. From her own experience of beginning her training in the ancient Japanese martial art of Ninpo Taijutsu at the tender young age of 47, following a deep spiral into PTSD, to becoming her teacher's first female black belt 10 years later, she discovered that there is an incredible amount of strength and power in each and every one of us, just waiting to be unleashed. Cheryl is an author, a speaker and a recovered chronic pain patient.  She was told she would never be able to do the things she loved ever again at a young age.  Now Cheryl is not merely surviving, but she is thriving. In this episode, we talk about the struggles Cheryl lived with and it wasn't until she took her own health into her hands that her life began to change.  This isn't about not listening to your doctors, and please note that this is in no way medical advice - speak with your own practitioner about what's right for you.  Cheryl listened to what felt right for her, and made changes through her own investigation and research.  Often once we get into the medical system, we never get better, and we continue down a path of slow demise.  After 2 years of not getting better, and even feeling worse, Cheryl's life took a turn  when she took matters into her own hands - and she hasn't looked back since. We talk about Feldenkrais, about her book Forever Fit and Flexible, her podcast The FemiNinja Podcast and her coaching program.  To find out more, check her out at https://www.cherylilov.com/about/.If you enjoyed this episode, please share.  It means the world to us podcasters when you do this!  Also, follow me!  I'm on Twitter, YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, Pinterest - Sandy K Nutrition everywhere. My contest is still running.  I will be giving away a biological age DNA kit to a lucky winner, valued at $300 US in a draw.  To enter, subscribe, rate, and review my podcast with a few kind words.  In order to be considered, proof must be provided via email to sandy@sandyknutrition.ca.  North American entries only.  To review with a few kind words, you can go here:  https://lovethepodcast.com/sandyknutrition.

At the tender young age of 36, Cheryl Ilov was blindsided by a devastating back injury. In a few short months, she was transformed from a healthy, active, vibrant young woman to a chronic pain patient. Instead of going to her usual ballet and Pilates classes, she filled her time with doctor's appointments, physical therapists, and massage therapists. She was on pain meds, muscle relaxers, and anti-inflammatories. Two and a half years later, Cheryl was told that living with chronic, debilitating pain was her new normal, and she had to accept it. Cheryl knew she had to find another way. She fired her medical team (much to their dismay), stopped taking the medications, and began a meticulous process of self-healing through gentle movement, self-exploration, and awareness. Not only did Cheryl make a complete recovery, she discovered a unique path to fitness and vitality, and embarked on a remarkable journey of lifelong learning. She earned her Master's Degree in physical therapy in 1996, and pursued extensive training in Pilates, dance, Feldenkrais, and became a martial arts black belt at the age of 57. She has since taken up pole dancing and at 62 years young, she continues to enjoy the flexibility and range of motion that is required for this fun and rigorous activity.    What we believe is what we become. In today's conversation with us, Cheryl Ilov shares her belief that we can all be fit, healthy, vibrant, and active in every stage of life, and she backs it up with experience – her own and the many clients she's worked with. Cheryl emphasizes that feeling fabulous at fifty and beyond is more than a clothing size or number on a scale. Listen is as she offers practical tips for taking back your health and transforming your body. We need a different way of looking at our bodies and to make the shift from being a patient of the medical system to becoming an active partner responsible for our health. Cheryl shows us how. Key Takeaways Don't depend on anyone else to fix or heal you, and don't buy into the labels that well-meaning doctors place on you.   The key is organic movement, building muscle from the inside out. Fitness isn't a size or number. It's not about how you look it's about how you feel. What we believe is what we become. It's time we move our bodies as God intended – including circular movement of the hip joint. Tissues can regenerate. Use the power of visualization to take control of your vitality and health. Cheryl Ilov surprised not only herself, but everyone who knew her when she began her martial arts training in the Art of the Ninja at the age of 47. Sure she likes tutus and toe shoes, Pilates and pedicures, but martial arts, this was never ever on her radar. But the Universe had other plans for her. Her Sensei was her acupuncturist and her friend long before he became her teacher. It took him 3 years to get her to train with him, and she did not go willingly. He literally had to drag her onto the mat, kicking and screaming, not in a good way. Finally agreeing to take a few classes, just to prove to him how much she was going to hate it, to her surprise, she fell in love with the art and the training, and the sense of strength, empowerment, and confidence she gained from training. Her friends were horrified. They told Cheryl she was too old, too frail, she would get injured, and she should quit. She ignored them and kept going to class. Ten years later, at the age of 57, Cheryl earned the high honour of becoming her Sensei's first female black belt. In the entire 20 year history of the school, no woman had reached the rank of black belt. During her training, Cheryl learned many secrets of the ninja and how they train including how to make the Kiai sound, - the short shout uttered when performing an attacking move. Learn more at her website cherylilov.com and also during the podcast when Cheryl shares several tips and secrets to help you move like a ninja and think like a warrior, in business and life in general.  Go & Surprise Yourself!
