This is a rewind episode featuring blues guitarist Johnny Burgin. What is a rewind episode? It's a previously published episode, one of my favorites, and one that I think merits re-publishing. I give these episodes a fresh edit, which means you will find it even more enjoyable from a listening perspective. Johnny Burgin, the coast-to-coast (intercontinental) Chicago blues man, first appeared in episode 31 back in December of 2017. We performed a house concert on February 11 2020 at Tranquilo Retreat in Panama. He's coming to Querétaro to perform the 9th annual Querétablues Festival, which you can find on Facebook @BluesFestQro. I have the honor of being part of his band for the festival. We'll also do some private shows and one secret show while he's here. My conversation with Johnny was truly great. I'm so happy I re-listened to it for this special rewind edition. Johnny is the real deal where blues guitar is concerned. We discuss his history as a musician, and his philosophy on blues, music, and the stage. We also talk about some of his international tour adventures, relationships with blues players in Chicago, Silicon Valley, and around the world, Pinetop Perkins, the Chicago Blues Festival, and more. Find Johnny's upcoming tour dates and music at JohnnyBurgin.com. Please enjoy this rewind conversation with Johnny Burgin.

In childhood, Williams and his half-brother James "Pookie" Young received encouragement and tutelage from their uncle, the blues guitarist, songwriter and recording artist J. B. Hutto, and by 1975 the half-siblings had formed the first version of the Blues Imperials. Since 1989, the band's lineup has been Williams (lead guitar and vocals), Michael Garrett (rhythm guitar and vocals), James Young (bass) and Kelly Littleton (drums). Living Blues magazine described the band as "Rough-and-ready South and West Side blues...Ed's swirling, snarling slide guitar work can be riveting, and The Imperials pound out blues-rock riffs and rhythms behind him as if they're overdosing on boogie juice." Guitar Player called the band "a snarling boogie-blues machine." A decade later, Alligator Records offered them the chance to record a track, "Young Thing", for a compilation album, New Bluebloods (1987). Producer and label owner Bruce Iglauer encouraged them to record additional material, and they cut a full album's worth of material at that session, released as Roughhousin' (1986). They then appeared at music festivals and toured widely. Their second album, Chicken, Gravy & Biscuits, was released in 1989, and their third, What You See Is What You Get, in 1992. At this point the group disbanded. Williams issued two solo albums, Keep On Walking, on which he was joined by Dave Weld, a former member of the Blues Imperials, and Who's Been Talking (1998), pairing Williams with Willie Kent. In 1999 the release of Get Wild marked the group's reunion. It was followed by Heads Up (2002), Rattleshake (2006), Full Tilt (2008) and Jump Start (2012). Lil' Ed and the Blues Imperials have appeared multiple times at the Chicago Blues Festival and festivals and clubs around the world. In June 2008, Williams played on Magic Slim's album Midnight Blues. In June 2009, Williams was a guest on the radio quiz show Wait Wait... Don't Tell Me!, produced by Chicago Public Radio and National Public Radio, Lil' Ed and the Blues Imperials have been nominated for eight Blues Music Awards as Band of the Year and have won that award twice.

Shemekia Copeland is a three time Grammy-nominated blues singer on the Alligator Records label. Shemekia started singing professionally with her father the legendary Texas guitarist, Johnny Copeland, at the age of 16. Her seventh solo album, Outskirts of Love has topped all of the blues charts, nominated for a Grammy-Award for Best Blues Album and features Billy Gibbons (ZZ Top), Robert Randolph and Alvin Youngblood Hart. In 2012 she performed for the U.S. President Barrack Obama at the White House. Her band regularly tours alongside of the Robert Cray Band. At the 2011 Chicago Blues Festival, the City of Chicago and the State of Illinois officially declared her to be “The New Queen of the Blues” and presented her a crown by Koko Taylor’s daughter, Cookie Taylor.
Out of Ontario, Canada comes the MacKenzie Blues Band. Consisting of classically trained vocalist, Tara MacKenzie, guitarist Trevor MacKenzie, bassist Joel Dawson & drummer Mike Weir, they have just released their sophomore album Slam! Bam!, containing 12 originals. The band has traveled to Memphis for the IBC twice and we will discuss their careers and their music. Generation Blues Experience is the joining of 14-year old Ray Goren, who has played guitar at the Chicago Blues Festival and with Buddy Guy and more. he was introduced to 80-year old bluesman, Jamie Bluesboy Powell and septuangenerian harpist Sammy Lee. The three were introduced a few years agao and their musical talents meshed, and Generation Blues Band was formed. We'll talk about how their music bridges the generational gap and where they hope to go in the near future. Bob Corritore needs no introduction. Maybe an explanation as to why it has taken so long to bring Bob on the show; well I interviewed him for American Blues News a number of years ago, he has visited during my IBC shows and somehow,my brain turned that into him having appeared on a Monday show! When I realized my mistake, I reached out and Bob accepted. We'll look at how it all began some 40 years ago and then also chat with Bob about his take on the Blues World today as compared to when he was sharing the stage with the many legends who are no longer with us. We'll share some of the mus from Bob's latest, Taboo. Finally, Sena Ehrhardt returns for COUCH KID NEW MUSIC for her new album, Live My Life. Sena originally sat on The Couch back in May 2013, so we will find out what the last year has brought to this wonderful artist. "Musicians You Should Know"

WANDA JACKSON is widely known and respected as "The Queen of Rockabilly." Jackson is credited with being the first woman to ever record a rock and roll song-"Let's Have a Party" in 1958. In 2009, Jackson was inducted into the "Rock and Roll Hall of Fame" and, in 2010, was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Americana Music Awards. Wanda returns to the WoodSongs Stage to celebrate the release of her 31st studio album 'Unfinished Business' produced by Justin Townes Earle on Sugar Hill Records. SHEMEKIA COPELAND has evolved from teenage upstart to one of the most prominent voices in the blues. She's currently the most feted woman in the blues world and actually had a coronation where she was crowned and declared "Queen of the Blues" at the Chicago Blues Festival in 2011. Shemekia earned her crown with a series of high-quality recordings and an unrelenting tour schedule including a memorable performance at the White House in front of an audience that included the President of the United States, sharing the bill with Buddy Guy, Mick Jagger, Jeff Beck, B.B. King and other greats. Her latest is "33 1/3" on Telarc International.
Join Candidly Candace as she talks with singer/songwriter Anne Harris. With the release of Gravity and Faith, Harris delivered her strongest, most compelling work to date, her voice exuding a revealing honesty, clarity and deep-rooted strength and her fiddle playing at its most emotionally engaging. ConcertLiveWire.com said the record "boasts a carefully crafted blend of violin-infused pop/rock arrangements, the occasional folk flavoring and introspective lyricism" while the Illinois Entertainer said her work is "brimming with socially conscious, and at times, intensely personal lyrics as memorable as thought-provoking." Fresh on the heels of Gravity and Faith, Harris released another record in 2008, Live at the Acorn Theater, a project which was born of converging desires to create a live record and revisit some of her earlier songs. Such a period of intense focus on her own music made it all the more refreshing when her creativity as an instrumentalist became increasingly in demand. Before the year was out Harris would find herself as a guest violinist with psychedelic 70’s legend Jefferson Starship and touring regularly with world renown trance-blues innovator, Otis Taylor, having appeared with the latter at the 2009 Blues Music Awards in Memphis (where Taylor won “Instrumentalist of the Year, Banjo"), Chicago Blues Festival, Bristol Rhythm & Roots Reunion, Jazz Aspen Snowmass and the Telluride Blues Festival. Anne finds performing other people’s music to be an exciting opportunity for in-the-moment creativity and discovery and the experience ultimately influences her own writing, leading her into new territory. Listeners are welcome to call in during the live broadcast by dialing 347-996-3381 and join in the discussion via the Candidly Candace Facebook Fan page.
