Christian Contemporary Music has long had it's issues with writing songs that are theologically accurate, living up to the Holy Lifestyle expected of Christians, and even wanting to distance themselves from being called a “Christian” Band. What some don't realize is just how many now affirm and even promote a homosexual lifestyle including Jars of Clay, who actually did music for the Series "The Chosen". On this episode we take a look at how some think that they are simply Chosen to be Gay! The late 90s and early aughts were a banner time for a really specific type of rock band - the are-they-or-aren't-they a Christian band, band. Sixpence None the Richer. Creed. Evanescence. Lifehouse. Owl City. Paramore. They all had different sounds, but they left listeners wondering: are they - or aren't they - “Christian music?” This week on Rock that Doesn't Roll: does an artist who identifies as Christian have to brand their music as such? With insight from David Dark (author, We Become What We Normalize), hosts Andrew Gill (producer, Sound Opinions) and Leah Payne (author, God Gave Rock & Roll to You) follow the story of Jon Foreman, a pastor's kid from Carlsbad, California whose band Switchfoot created songs that resonated with youth group kids and climbed the Top 40 charts. Were they, or were they not, a Christian band? We explore efforts to rethink Christian music, and how mainstream superstars U2 led the way for bands like Switchfoot to wrestle with the marketing category of “Christian” - and find an enduring connection with their fans along the way. Droppin out of college to start a band? Could have been the worst decision of my life.
I know you've been waiting all week for this, and we appreciate your patience. Was the wait worth it? IDK, you will have to let us know. You must realize that this is part 2 of a Christian band draft, so most of the big dogs are off the board. There are still some all-stars left, but there will be some bands on here that make you go, "Huh?" That's just how drafts work though. Very rarely does a late-round pick end up being an all-time pick. We are hoping one of these picks will be our Dennis Rodman, but do you really expect Steller Kart to be a two-time defensive player of the year or be best friends with Kim Jong Un? It's not happening folks. Don't forget to leave a rating/review and subscribe so you know when new episodes drop. Email us at: thegoodbrothersshow@gmail.com Follow us on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/thegoodbrothersshow/?utm_medium=copy_link
I know what you're thinking, this is a very niche episode. At least the villain draft had a Bradley Whitford reference, and everyone loves Bradly. He was the unanimous top pick for every brother. But let me tell you something, we could go much more niche than a Christian band draft. This is only the tip of the iceberg folks. Just wait till we draft our favorite Xiaolin Showdown episodes. This could be much worse. The only thing that's bad about this episode is that it's Part 1 of a 2-part episode and it's mandatory to listen to it before camp. Sorry, those are the rules. And if you listen to this episode long enough we will finally address our biggest hater. It's a HUGE reveal.

Matt Johnson, former Mars Hill elder and drummer in the "Christians in a band not Christian Band" bands Roadside Monument, Blenderhead, and Raft of Dead Monkeys talks with us about the pre-Mars Hill 1990s Seattle Christian punk community, centered around Calvary Chapel in the University District, where Damien Jurado, Dave Bazan and many others also attended. We talk about his time in those bands, particularly Roadside Monument, who recently played a reunion show at Furnace Fest. When talking about music, have you ever had someone ask, "Is it a Christian or secular band"? Does God really want us to create these categories where Christians have their own celebrities and goods and services? Has anyone ever asked you, "how is your spiritual life"? What if our view of segmenting life and the things that we can enjoy into "Christian" and "secular" categories has actually done us a disservice?
