In this episode, Linda begins by speaking about the kinds of assumptions made about her because of her Italian-Canadian immigrant background - and then expands that consideration to show how making such assumptions can actually be harmful. Case in point? The Christie-Pitts riot on August 16, 1933. There have been two graphic novels written about this riot: one simply titled Christie Pitts and the other titled The Good Fight.A second case in point is the Japanese-Canadian internment camps during the Second World War. She considers four works of literature in Canada that address this subject:Joy Kogawa's ObasanFrances Itani's RequiemKerri Sakamoto's One Hundred Million HeartsMark Sakamoto's Forgiveness: A Gift from my GrandparentsThen, for the Takeaway, she invites scholar, Jennifer Andrews, who addresses narratives of exceptionality and demonstrates what function they serve (and whose) and why they persist. Using her book, Canada Through American Eyes (published by Palgrave in 2023), Jennifer chats with Linda about how narratives of exceptionality are rehearsed in both the United States and Canada - and why we need to challenge them. This week we chat with Christie Pitts! In this episode, Christie and Erica talk about the maternal health crisis that's facing the United States and is significantly worse among POC. Christie has taken this passion and kickstarted an ops role at the startup Mahmee and co-founded VCs for Repro to build a coalition of VCs who are united to support access to abortion. She's a wealth of knowledge on the topic and was open about her journey into the tech world.Christie Pitts is VP of Operations at Mahmee, a maternal healthcare company on a mission to make the US the best place in the world to give birth. She co-founded the VCs for Repro initiative, focused on the intersection of the economy and reproductive justice, and hosts the Moms at Work liveshow to build community, raise awareness, and advocate for better experiences for working moms. She is also an experienced early-stage investor formerly at Backstage Capital having invested in more than 200 companies led by underrepresented (women, people of color, and LGBTQ) founders. Ukraine's energy company warns of even more power-cuts after Russia sent a new volley of missiles, hitting the country's already damaged electicity and water systems - so how possible is it do to business at all there? We're joined by Alex Dayrabekov who runs a tech company in Bucha - 40 minutes from Kyiv. It's been a rollercoaster day for oil prices, with big drops in the benchmark rates after an earlier rise. And part of the reason seems to be the new $60 per barrel price cap on Russian seaborne crude oil which took effect on Monday, supported by the EU, the G7 and Australia. Dr Adnan Vatansever, reader at King's College London's Russia Institute, explains all. April Joyner, from Business Insider, joins World Business Report from New York to talk about the latest with crypto, as Standard Chartered Bank says it could plunge by 70% in 2023 - taking the value to $5,000. Christie Pitts, investor at Backstage Capital in Oakland, California, talks about research co-authored by Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook which says black founders of US startups raise just one-third as much venture capital over the first five years as other comparable businesses.
Brittany Davis and Christie Pitts, general partners at Backstage Capital, join the show with Scott Kitun. Brittany and Christie talk about the present day investing landscape and why the future of VC will trend towards inclusiveness (or lose). The group shares their thoughts and experiences with the top VC firms, why so many are resistant to change and where the next generation of founders and investors is primed to shape who and what gets funded differently from their predecessors. We also talk about Backstage's new Flex Fund II, which KingsCrowd (Technori's parent company) will provide data and ratings on promising online deals that have underrepresented founders. You can learn more here.
Jelani talks with Christie Pitts, general partner at Backstage Capital.Christie is an incredible VC, investing specifically in companies led by underrepresented founders. That's women, people of color, and LGBTQ folks. She's also a mother of two. And Jelani and Christie get into the societal expectations of mothers who work. They talk about the fact that no matter how much mothers juggle, they can never quite hit that imaginary bar that society puts on them.Christie also helps Jelani investigate his own shortcomings managing the household with my wife. She also shares some tips on how to begin dismantling the evidence of sexism and patriarchy that we see around us everyday. They explore how Christie navigates the male-dominated industry that is VC, and how she hopes her kids grow up to believe they can belong anywhere.Christie is actually an investor in the company that makes this podcast, A Kids Co. So that kind of makes Christie Jelani's boss. Honestly, after this interview, we couldn't think of a better boss to have. All right, Christy Pitts. Less than 10% of all venture capital deals go to women, people of color, and LGBT founders. While other VCs see this as a pipeline problem, Backstage Capital - an investment firm focused on investing in companies led by underrepresented founders - sees it as the most significant opportunity in investment. Data shows again and again that diverse teams perform better and diverse investors make better investment decisions. Morgan Stanley estimates more than $4 trillion in unrealized venture capital due to the lack of diversity in investment decisions.Backstage Capital has invested in more than 180 companies led by underrepresented founders since 2015 and successfully maxed out their million-dollar campaign on Republic in a record time of nine hours!Today we welcome Christie Pitts and Brittany Davis from Backstage Capital, to discuss the value of investing in underrepresented founders and leveraging your community as an investor and founder. Brace your hearts and buckle up for a conversation with Kathy Ramsey, a human who shares honestly about the complexity of both physical and emotional trauma recovery. Kathy was run over by a truck 2.5 years ago which broke her back, pelvis, all her ribs, her left leg and shoulder and had a stroke due to massive internal blood loss. By the time she arrived at the hospital via ambulance, they were unable to get a blood pressure reading as she had so little blood left in her body. Kathy Ramsey has lived many lives: reporter, refugee lawyer, mother, trauma survivor. As a journalist, she covered intrepid subjects such as the Yukon Quest, a 1,000 mile dog-sled race from Dawson City, Yukon to Fairbanks, Alaska. She then decided to go to law school at McGill University during which time she became involved in a volunteer coalition that helped get 100s of Palestinians in Montreal legal immigration status. A few years after law school, she moved to Toronto for love, opened her own immigration and refugee law practice, had 2 children, and was thrilled to get a position at the Refugee Law Office of Legal Aid Ontario. And then on August 31, 2017, after a long day at work, she was riding her bike to meet her husband and children at Christie Pitts pool when she was run over by a dump truck in downtown Toronto. She spent nearly 5 months in hospital, and has spent the last 2 years navigating the peaks and valleys of recovery, finding community in a group of fellow women trauma survivors who have helped her to feel not so alone in the crushing isolation of trauma recovery. While in law school, she lived and worked in Bourj el Barajneh and Shatila Palestinian refugee camps in Lebanon, and interned at the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan. She's been involved in migrant justice work in Canada, with Solidarity Across Borders and the Immigration Legal Committee.Thank you Kathy. In Episode 2 we take a look at the phones of 2005, including the Treo 650, LG VX9800, Nokia 770 Internet Communicator, Moto ROKR, Blackberry 7100 and 8700, and the HTC Universal. Welcome to the very first episode of 0G, A History of Forgotten Phones! 0G is a limited-run podcast where we look back at how weird and wonderful smartphones were back in the days before iOS and Android took over and your only option became a rectangular slab running one or the other. 0G is hosted by two people who were there: Christie Pitts (now at Backstage Capital), who started her career selling phones at a Verizon store, and Peter Rojas (now at Betaworks Ventures), founder of Gizmodo, Engadget, and gdgt. Each episode we'll take a look back at a bunch of phones that were emblematic of that era. For Episode 1 we're going all the way back to 2002 through 2004 to discuss the Treo 600, Danger Hiptop / T-Mobile Sidekick, Motorola RAZR, Nokia N-Gage (and of course sidetalking!), Audiovox 6600 and 6700 (aka the HTC Apache), and HTC Canary. Note that this episode was recorded in September 2018, so some references we make to iPhones that were still unannounced at that time might be a little confusing. Want to contact us? Today's episode of Product Hunt Radio is the largest gathering yet, featuring Arlan, Christie, Bryan, and Amiah from the Backstage Capital team. Arlan Hamilton isn't your typical VC. She went from being homeless not long ago to founding and scaling Backstage Capital, a fund dedicated to investing in underrepresented (or underestimated, as she coined) founders. Since 2015, they have invested millions of dollars into over 80 companies. Prior to starting the fund, she worked in the music industry, where she was a tour manager and founder and publisher of INTERLUDE, an internationally distributed indie magazine. Christie Pitts is the co-founder of Backstage Studio, their recently announced venture studio. Prior to teaming up with Arlan and team, she worked with Verizon Ventures portfolio and following emerging technology trends. Bryan Landers is Backstage's recently promoted COO and producer of two of Backstage's podcasts. Previously he worked as a designer and product manager at Zapier and as a consultant. Amiah Sheppard is an operations associate and analyst working on the deal flow team at Backstage. She has a particular focus on beauty and wellness startups. In this episode we talk about: Arlan's mission to find underrepresented and underestimated founders and the importance, even as adults, of being able to look up to role models who look like you. Arlan hopes to be a role model to a new generation of people of color that want to build companies. The crew, as they call the team at Backstage, walk through some of their requests for products, including waterproof headgear, online book clubs, and a way to bring the shared experience of live music online. Aspiring founders, take note! Also mullets make another appearance (see last week's episode for more chatter about mullet). Except this time it's not about a mullet strategy or mullet businesses, it's about the actual, for-real hockey hair. We also talk about some of their favorite products, like an app that lets you experience live music in virtual reality, a service that lets you search live audio, and a way to add pictures, maps or quotes to your favorite podcasts. We’ll be back next week so be sure to subscribe on Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Spotify, Breaker, Overcast, or wherever you listen to your favorite podcasts. Also, big thanks to our sponsors, Airtable, GE Ventures, Intercom and Stripe for their support.
Nowadays, race and gender discrimination is still prevailing in most countries. Such bias displays in different circumstances, funding per se.
