Derek Dominique is a Las Vegas-based music artist/songwriter. Born and raised in Houston Texas, he knew he was destined for greatness wherever that may be. From talent shows to festival performances, Derek has been blessed to grace stages. Growing up in a single-parent household, while also moving back and forth to his grandparents, Dominique was always intrigued by music. His first talent show was in the 6th grade where he performed in front of Christopher Reid of Kid&Play. Dominique put his first single out in 2002 where he started to gain local attention. After high school, Derek decided to enlist in the military for 8 years. While serving, Derek joined a group named ‘LSR' and continued to put together albums and singles, then in 2009 they garnered the attention of Atlantic Records A&R. During his stint recording with Atlantic, Derek was asked to go solo and leave the group but Derek denied the requests. After serving his term in the military, Derek moved to Las Vegas to pursue his music career. From local bars to Top 40 radio, Derek continues to impact the world with his music. His single ‘June' has been added to radio station and was featured as the song of the game for the Las Vegas Golden Knights. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/steven-cuoco/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/steven-cuoco/support

Before Christopher "Kid" Reid became one of the most iconic faces in Hip-Hop history, along with his partner in rap, Christopher "Play" Martin, he had to endure a lot to become who he is. Nothing came easy - the white people didn't respect him because he was half Jamaican. The black people laughed at him because he was half white. This meant he had to work doubly hard, and use his charismatic personality and love for Hip-Hop as tools to navigate the rough waters of New York life. Come on an audio journey of his life and hear how he went from performing for free at park jams in the Bronx to working at Sears with Martin Lawrence to being the first rapper with a Saturday morning cartoon. Though some might describe machine translation as magic, academic translator and entrepreneur Christopher Reid pushes back on this notion.

Today we're speaking to a LEGEND! His Flat Top haircut set the industry standard in the early '90s and the Kid 'n Play dance is still going viral today. Watch the video at: podcasts.wikileaf.com
Kid talks about growing up in The Bronx and Queens worshipping seminal rappers like Melle Mel--and later getting to hang with his idols. After landing the lead role in House Party originally intended for Will Smith (who, thanks to Kid’s regrettable business decision, ended up with a hit sitcom on NBC that vaulted him to superstardom), Kid tormented Martin Lawrence on set and put his writing touches on the 1990 film that became a surprise sensation. We hear about Kid’s friendship with Bill Maher, who he defended (and privately chastized) after the comedian dropped an N-bomb on “Real Time,” and his latest musical effort, a pandemic-inspired collaboration with rapper Bizkit called “Horizon.” Kid also shares his thoughts on the chasm between Aaron Rodgers and the Packers and tells Mike and Natalie about his epic feud with their friend (and Pass It Down intro impresario) Luke Campbell of 2 Live Crew in ‘90s.
Kid describes his early experiences as a celebrity, including the time he was asked to autograph an item that offended him on a deep level. He recalls touring with Digital Underground and then-roadie/all-purpose regulator Tupac Shakur, a future superstar who was shot on the night Kid and Mike met at Derrick Thomas’ house (and died six days later). And there’s a whole lot of reminiscing about what made Thomas special, from the Hall of Fame pass rusher’s legendary social stamina, to his impactful foundation, to his championing of a JFK conspiracy theory that traced back to his boss’s family.

We are delving into the Couples Corner. Today we welcome relationship experts Dr. Chris and Darlene Reid. Chris and Darlene share with us how they started seeing each other back in college and how gender rules, childhood upbringing, and society norms played into their relationship. Join us as we discover what having it all means to Dr. Chris Reid and Darlene Reid. Christopher Reid is a relationship cardiologist. “Doc” Reid, as he is affectionately, not professionally known, has a specialty in matters of the heart. For the last 11 years as a relationship coach, author, and speaker, Doc Reid has helped to empower women all over the world to no longer accept less than what they deserve in their relationships. He uses his calm and non-judgmental demeanor to make his clients feel at ease about revealing their innermost secrets about life, love, and loss. Doc Reid has an uncanny ability to help his clients move past the surface layer defense strategies they naturally present, to help them see and understand the source of their own destructive habits that can rob them of loving relationship experiences they deserve. This journey of self-discovery that he coaches them through, helps them heal their own broken hearts. Doc Reid's unique blend of humor, God's Word, and unapologetic straight talk are the reasons women of all backgrounds and ethnicities flock to his message of self-love. Revealing the mind of a man in a way that takes the mystery out of his behavior is also one of Doc Reid's greatest talents. Doc Reid believes in practicing what he preaches about how a man should treat a woman by constantly pursuing his wife's heart of 25 years. He affectionately still calls her his girlfriend because he knows how important it is to never stop taking her on dates and romantic getaways without the kids, so they can constantly reconnect. Doc Reid has also taught his daughters, who are 18 and 15, how a man is supposed to treat them by routinely taking them on daddy-daughter dates. Doc Reid is the co-author of “The Forbidden Secrets of the Good box” which teaches women what their father didn't tell them and their mother didn't know about men and relationships. He also produced the video “Why He Married Her Instead of You” to teach women a man is not looking for a woman he can live with but the one he can't live without.

Patrick is a black comedy from Belgium set in a woodland nudist camp. After his father dies and leaves him to run the campsite, Patrick’s favourite hammer is stolen, and he finds himself on an existential quest as he attempts to recover his beloved tool. The film is by Tim Mielants who directed the third series of Peaky Blinders. Briony Hanson gives us her verdict. The Dublin residence known as The House Of The Dead because James Joyce used it as the setting for part of his 1914 short story The Dubliners is in the news because developers want to turn it into a 50-bed hostel. Many important Irish writers have objected, saying that it would 'destroy an essential part of Ireland’s cultural history'. Colm Tóibín explains why he thinks the development shouldn’t go ahead. The poet Christopher Reid won the Costa Book of the Year in 2009 with A Scattering, in which he reflected on the death of his wife Lucinda. Today he discusses his new collection The Late Sun, in which he also memorialises those recently departed, including his mother, but also celebrates the vitality of living, as well as travel and the reality of the day-to-day experience. Scottish singer songwriter Amy Macdonald talks about her fifth album The Human Demands, which spans a range of emotions, from the happiness of falling in love to a feeling of loneliness. Christopher Reid Martin is at the center of a lot of artistic worlds. Through his involvement with Coaxial Arts (http://coaxialarts.org/), he is deeply tied into the experimental art world in LA. He's also been recording with a variety of groups over the years, and has also been working with Max (and is currently working at Cycling '74). I wanted to get a chance to talk with Christopher, and to find out how he molds all of these different things into a cohesive whole. The answer is complex, but it seems to be connected to a love of all arts - and particularly the place when multiple media come together. This is clearly why he was drawn to Coaxial, Max and a lot of other stuff that he is into. In our chat, we talked about Coaxial - how it got started, how it operates and how he is involved. We also talk about his musical exploits, including Shelter Death, and the broad variety of other projects that are either on-going or on-hiatus. But, as it my interest, we also explore his background, and how a kid growing up in Orange County get this deeply into the experimental arts scene. You can find out more about Christopher's work here: https://christopher-reid-martin.format.com/ Enjoy, and thanks for listening!

In our most festive podcast yet, Julian Stannard reads his poems ‘Boxing Day', ‘Buddhism' and ‘Pigs in Suffolk', and talks about the strange theatre of the dining room: Italy, his mother, Christmas and trifle; bleak poems that end up being humorous; poets Giorgio Caproni, Ezra Pound, Christopher Reid and Selima Hill; of a sense of the absurd as a coping mechanism; and of Donald Davies's idea of fending off at least some of the stuff trying to get into a poem. In the cozy warmth of their homes in December, the boyz team up with Daniel J. Hogan of Clattertron.com to throw a house party. Err, that is to watch House Party. I was just Kid’n Playing with you. Want to risk watching it? Amazon Video iTunes All else fails? Try canistream.it. Bullworth is a “rap’ movie? Paul wants this soundtrack on The Last Dragon. Dan has recently enjoyed Straight Outta Compton, bought the N.W.A. album with the same title and wants this soundtrack, yo. Hip Hop Family Tree is a suggested comic you should read. Chris & Dan cannot recommend Cool As Ice enough. They are totally down with Vanilla Ice. The late, great Robin Harris is “Pops” in this film. Wait, are we watching Pee-wee’s Big Adventure? Paul & Chris are getting matching sweaters like Kid’n Play from the Gittin’ Funky video. Chris has a Youtube playlist of more old hip hop tracks he had the cassettes or singles of, click at your own risk. The film’s villains are the group Full Force. They have great professional names, way better than the character names in the movie. Oh look! A very young Martin Lawrence and Tisha Campbell-Martin from that TV show Martin(1992). Dan says we need to add Reagan’s Bedtime for Bonzo to next season’s Film Frown. How different would this movie be if it was written by Tennessee Williams? Pops wants to watch Dolemite, the forefather of bad movies. Don’t break your nose doing this dance move. Here’s a how-to. Oh hey! It’s Lou B. Washington from UHF. Red dyes are evil! Why does that cop look familiar? Barry Diamond The graphic sex scene is disturbing in a different way than the one in A Boy and His Dog. George Clinton is the DJ at the elephant graveyard party. Who is the better actor, Christopher “Kid” Reid or Christopher “Play” Martin? Daryl Mitchell from Galaxy Quest was part of a rap duo? Another great performer in this film is John Witherspoon, from Friday, The Boondocks and Black Jesus. There is no drug use, no smoking, the one guy drinking is made fun of and absolutely no hanky panky without birth control. This movie is actually pretty responsible. That explains why Kid’N Play had a cartoon as well. Oh no, Dan remembers the awful that is Hammer Man. Magic shoes? That’s not 2 legit. At your next cocktail party, be sure to challenge someone to a dance off. Everyone loves the scene where Robin Harris is talking to the police (NSFW). Dan teaches us what CPT means. What’s the deal with those burglars in the film? It’s the producer and director. The most amazing voice of Fats Williams gives advice about not getting raped in prison. Dan thinks this is a good movie, but no From Justin to Kelly. Meanwhile, Chris kept thinking he was watching Class Act. Dan plugs the Capital City Film Festival as he was volunteering for them. Thanks to Dan for joining the show! He’s 2 Hype. Be sure to peep his web comic, Clattertron. Thanks for rolling with us and listening. Please check out our other podcast, Montreal Sauce and enjoy doing the Kid’N Play kick step this week. Support Film Frown on Patreon
