Dawgman.com's Jack McCauley and Luke Mounger get into the holiday spirit this week with their Thanksgiving game week preview, but it's not the Apple Cup! Now that both Oregon and Washington are in the Big Ten and Washington State is in the college football wilderness, it's time to turn the page and look at the rivalry between UO and UW as the true big Pacific Northwest rivalry game. But before they go into the meat of the game against the No. 1 Ducks, the guys recap the UCLA win at Husky Stadium that got the Huskies to bowl eligibility. And that chat folds right into one of the big conversations for Washington fans this week; should Demond Williams start at quarterback instead of Will Rogers? The conversation then merges into a breakdown of Washington's defense and what they can try and do to stop a potent Oregon attack, and then the tables are flipped. What can Washington's offense do against Oregon's stout defense, especially their pass rush? After a break, the guys go into the players they expect to shine in their Bet to Bark segment, and then go into their Betting B1G talk where they look at other conference games and compare their season-long predictions. And then to finish up they go into their Confidence Intervals, which measures just how good they are feeling about a Washington win in Eugene. The Dawgman interns - Jack McCauley and Luke Mounger - are back to dissect Washington's weekend opponent, and this week it's the USC Trojans. After their loss at Indiana, the Huskies are back to the drawing board to try and figure out a way to get past their current losing streak. And usually when the USC Trojans come into town, that would a recipe for another loss. But these aren't your mother's Trojans. Under Lincoln Riley, they've been downright average the last season-and-a-half. Both Jack and Luke break down the game in general and offer their thoughts on what UW can try and do on both sides of the ball to help slow the Trojans down. How big will Jonah Coleman be in this game, especially after everyone saw Dillon Johnson run wild at USC last season and their run defense hasn't really improved all that much considering opposing offenses are also throwing the ball pretty well against the Trojans. And can UW slow USC down to give the offense enough chances to score touchdowns instead of field goals? USC is currently 16th in the country when it comes to passing offense, and they'll be going up against statistically the best pass defense in the country. Can Washington continue to show they do have one of the best pass defenses in the country, especially when you start to list all the weapons USC quarterback Miller Moss has to throw to? After a quick break, the guys offer up their Bets to Bark - the UW players they expect will impact the game the most - as well as their Betting B1G segment. And then to wrap up the game preview, Jack and Luke offer up their Confidence Intervals. It's how strongly they believe in a UW win. Needless to say, this week's confidence intervals aren't quite at the same level as they have been most of the year, but they do feel a little bit more confident about a home win compared to the last two weeks when the games were away from the friendly confines of Husky Stadium. The guys then quickly give a nod to the UW Men's Basketball team, whose season starts this coming Tuesday against UC Davis.  To learn more about listener data and our privacy practices visit: https://www.audacyinc.com/privacy-policy Learn more about your ad choices. After a bye week, UW goes back on the road to square off against the No. 13 Indiana Hoosiers, but the Hoosiers will be without starting quarterback Kurtis Rourke. How do the guys see Rourke's absence affect the game? What can UW do to try and slow down backup QB Tayven Jackson? The bye week also had to have helped get some Huskies back for this game, including EDGE Zach Durfee. Both Jack and Luke break down the game in general and offer their thoughts on what UW can try and do on both sides of the ball to help slow the Hoosiers down. Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2023.02.25.529586v1?rss=1 Authors: Skerswetat, J., He, J., Shah, J. B., Aycardi, N., Bex, P. J. Abstract: Purpose: Visual acuity (VA) is a critical clinical endpoint, however tests typically require trained staff, are fixed in their range, and provide only limited information about individual performance. This study introduces the Angular Indication Measurement and applies it to VA (AIM-VA). Agreement, repeatability, and test duration of AIM-VA were compared to standard clinical tests. Methods: 29 and 22 adults took part in two separate experiments. 4*4 charts with Landolt-C optotypes of varying sizes and random gap-orientations were presented at 4m viewing distance. Optotype size was response-adaptively updated after each chart. Participants indicated the perceived gap location by clicking on the corresponding location on a surrounding response-ring and VA was estimated from the report errors as a function of target size. First, we compared AIM-VAs with that of ETDRS and FrACT. Second, we compared repeatability over two tests of AIM-VA and ETDRS. AIM-VA-specific psychometric functions generated a new parameter called range of stimulus detectability improvement (ROSDI) that represents the range over which VA varies with target size. Results: There were no significant differences among VA estimates from AIM, ETDRS and FrACT. AIM-VA's test-retest repeatability was comparable to that of ETDRS (95% Confidence Intervals in logMAR: AIM-VA [0.18 / -0.15] when using 3 adaptive steps and ETDRS [0.18 / -0.11]). Median ROSDI was {+/-}0.14logMAR 0.03. Test duration was not significantly different for AIM-VA and ETDRS, the latter being significantly faster than FrACT. Conclusions: AIM-VA estimates of VA were equivalent to FrACT and ETDRS. AIM-VA can be estimated in approximately the same time as ETDRS and with comparable test-retest reliability. AIM-VA is an intuitive, self-administered, adaptive, and personalized method that provides reliable and repeatable estimates of VA and additional performance outcomes. AIM's orientation judgement approach is generalizable to interrogate many other visual functions, e.g., contrast, color, motion, stereo-vision. Copy rights belong to original authors. Agronomy is a noun.  It means the science of soil management and crop production. Biology is a natural science concerned with the study of life and living organisms, including their structure, function, growth, evolution, distribution, identification and taxonomy.  When an agronomist and a biologist get together to think up what deer really need to survive and flourish, look out, the brain waves might be radioactive.  Stand too close and you will learn lots about proper whitetail nutrition.  Jason Obermiller, a teacher and taxidermist with a Master's Degree in Biology, and Eric Fitzgerald, a full time agronomist, teamed up to develop what might be the deer supplement industry's most thought out, most well designed deer supplement on the market today.  Jason's thesis in college focused on a new way quickly age younger deer and soon after focused further studies on deer supplements currently on the market.  Jason can also tell you plenty about the health of a whitetail based on the feel of a antler (he's examined many as a taxidermist). Eric can read a soil report and tell you exactly what you need to make crops grow to their fullest potential.  Jason and Eric dive deep in this show explore many aspects of what a whitetail needs for complete nourishment in a herd and explain what you can and shouldn't do to help the overall health of the deer in your specific area. Bootstrap Confidence Intervals For Local Likelihood, Local Estimating Equations And Varying Coefficient Models

Four powerful generalizations of the usual local polynomial nonparametric regression methodology are (a) local polynomial methods in generalized linear models; (b) varying coefficient generalized linear models, where the possibly multivariate coefficients in a generalized linear model are estimated nonparametrically; (c) local likelihood methods; and (d) local estimating equations, which generalize nonparametric regression to the estimating equation context. We construct bootstrap confidence intervals for the nonparametrically estimated functions in all four contexts.

The Sandwich Variance Estimator: Efficiency Properties and Coverage Probability of Confidence Intervals

The sandwich estimator, often known as the robust covariance matrix estimator or the empirical covariance matrix estimator, has achieved increasing use with the growing popularity of generalized estimating equations. Its virtue is that it provides consistent estimates of the covariance matrix for parameter estimates even when the fitted parametric model fails to hold, or is not even specified. Surprisingly though, there has been little discussion of the properties of the sandwich method other than consistency. We investigate the sandwich estimator in quasilikelihood models asymptotically, and in the linear case analytically. Under certain circumstances we show that when the quasilikelihood model is correct, the sandwich estimate is often far more variable than the usual parametric variance estimate. The increased variance is a fixed feature of the method, and the price one pays to obtain consistency even when the parametric model fails. We show that the additional variability directly affects the coverage probability of confidence intervals constructed from sandwich variance estimates. In fact the use of sandwich estimates combined with t-distribution quantiles gives confidence intervals with coverage probability falling below the nominal value. We propose a simple adjustment to compensate this defect, where the adjustment explicitly considers the variance of the sandwich estimate.

A Note on Teaching Binomial Confidence Intervals

Mathematik, Informatik und Statistik - Open Access LMU - Teil 01/03

For constructing confidence intervals for a binomial proportion $p$, Simon (1996, Teaching Statistics) advocates teaching one of two large-sample alternatives to the usual $z$-intervals $hat{p} pm 1.96 times S.E(hat{p})$ where $S.E.(hat{p}) = sqrt{ hat{p} times (1 - hat{p})/n}$. His recommendation is based on the comparison of the closeness of the achieved coverage of each system of intervals to their nominal level. This teaching note shows that a different alternative to $z$-intervals, called $q$-intervals, are strongly preferred to either method recommended by Simon. First, $q$-intervals are more easily motivated than even $z$-intervals because they require only a straightforward application of the Central Limit Theorem (without the need to estimate the variance of $hat{p}$ and to justify that this perturbation does not affect the normal limiting distribution). Second, $q$-intervals do not involve ad-hoc continuity corrections as do the proposals in Simon. Third, $q$-intervals have substantially superior achieved coverage than either system recommended by Simon.
