Thousands of homes wiped out, entire neighborhoods gone—wildfires in Los Angeles have reached a terrifying new level. But could something like that happen here in Australia? Former New South Wales Fire and Rescue Commissioner Greg Mullins joins us to break it all down—how bushfires are getting worse, why they’re becoming harder to fight, and what that means for people living near bushland. Greg shares his firsthand experience working with fire agencies around the world and explains how bushfires are now turning into full-blown urban firestorms. We get into why hazard reduction burns are getting trickier, what building codes can (and can’t) do to protect homes, and the brutal reality that some fires just can’t be fought. It’s a conversation that every homeowner—especially those in fire-prone areas—needs to hear. So what can we actually do about it? Greg’s got some straight-up advice, plus a few surprising facts that might change the way you think about bushfire risk. Episode Highlights: 00:00 - Introduction 00:52 - Who is Greg Mullins? 02:17 - Did experts ever imagine wildfires could destroy a city like this? 04:06 - What is the meaning of urban conflagration? 06:32 - Could the Australian government have acted to avert the 2020 bushfires? 08:14 - Are authorities taking climate and fire warnings more seriously today? 09:13 - Could Australia face an urban fire like LA's, and what can we do to prevent it? 12:59 - Best way to unite fire services, councils, and property owners on fire prevention 18:43 - How is climate change making bushfires more extreme and unpredictable? 24:56 - How emergency services are gearing up for increasingly demanding fire events 28:22 - How is the insurance industry responding to rising bushfire threats? 32:40 - Can Australia’s construction sector keep up with rebuilding after bushfires? 34:39 - Is urban sprawl increasing fire and heat risks in Western Sydney? 38:44 - Best ways to fireproof homes in high-risk bushfire areas 43:48 - Should Australia strengthen its building codes for bushfire-prone areas? 46:13 - The dangers and long-term health effects of bushfire smoke 49:46 - Greg Mullins’ property dumbo About Our Guest: Greg Mullins AO, AFSM, is a veteran firefighter, climate advocate, and leader in emergency management. Serving nearly 14 years as Commissioner of Fire & Rescue NSW, he was the first to rise from the ranks to lead the agency, becoming its longest-serving chief in over a century. His expertise spans international bushfire management, emergency response coordination, and strategic leadership, including roles as President of the peak fire and emergency services council for Australia and New Zealand. After retiring in 2017, he rejoined the Rural Fire Service and was on the frontlines during the 2019–2020 Black Summer. Concerned about worsening climate-driven disasters, he founded Emergency Leaders for Climate Action, rallying former fire chiefs to push for urgent policy change. He continues to serve as a Climate Councillor and holds advisory roles shaping bushfire and emergency response strategies. His book, Firestorm, offers a firefighter’s perspective on the growing impact of climate change on natural disasters. On this weeks podcast, I speak with NSW Rural Fire Service Area Commander Southwestern Chief Superintendent Kelwyn White. Kelwyn commenced her service with the NSW Rural Fire Service in 2002 and, since then has worked across NSW in District, State, and Area-based roles. Kelwyn has been both a salaried officer and a volunteer during her service. Kelwyn's commitment, especially in Community Risk & Community Engagement, is held in the highest regard by her peers and the community. Kelwyn continues to be a proud advocate for engaged communities, playing a significant leadership and mentoring role in this field to NSW RFS membership and the community. Kelwyn is passionate about sharing her knowledge to help others achieve their desired outcomes, as a keen advocate for training, she gives her time to develop others. When Kelwyn commenced with the RFS, she started in administration and has worked her way through the ranks to be one of the 7 Area Commanders and, currently the only female in this role.  During this time, Kelwyn has been fortunate to see the evolution in the way women are seen and operate within the RFS and is proud to have been a part of that.  Yet knowing that, there is more to come and is proud to be in a position to support, encourage and mentor women to develop into leadership roles, or simply be the best version of themselves they can be within emergency service or their own lives. As the Area Commander for the Southwestern Area, Kelwyn is responsible for the coordinated fire-fighting arrangements across the Area, including mitigation of bushfire risks to the community through strategic organisational programs to reduce risk to the community from bushfire and other emergencies and ensuring communities are engaged, prepared and warned appropriately before and during an emergency. Over the past few months we have seen the devastation bushfires have caused across many of our beautiful forests – photographs of dead and injured koalas, kangaroos and echidnas have been upsetting, galvanising people to knit booties, put out water and fund food drops for wildlife. But what of those less charismatic species, the ones that are rarely seen, yet have just as much claim to being saved as any other species? Who is looking out for them?In pools, creeks and rivers across Australia are native fish that are small, unique and hard to find. As a result, we don't know a lot about them, but Associate Professor Mark Lintermans has dedicated his career to understanding the fish that most Australians know little about. Over the past few weeks Mark, along with colleagues from the University of Canberra and the NSW Department of Primary Industries, has been trekking into the bush, with Rural Fire Service escort, to catch and rescue fish not so much threatened by the fires, but by the impact of ash and debris being washed into their mountain homes once rain arrives. Mark tells the story of ‘Saving Stocky' in our second episode.

We hope you enjoy this wrap up episode where we chat about the year that was and the year that we hope for. There’s a lot to be sad and stressed about in the climate activism space, but we know the importance of staying positive so we wanted to focus on the wins of 2019 and our hopes for 2020. We chat about the year that was and what brought us joy - both the little changes that we made in our own lives and our favourite climate news stories. We also talk about what we hope to see in 2020 and (dare we say it) our resolutions for the new year/decade!Be warned - we did record this with a glass of wine in hand, so it is possible that this episode will be best enjoyed with a glass of your own!We also just wanted to say that our focus on the good news stories here is in no way meant to detract, or distract from the bushfire crisis. Here in Australia, we are pretty much constantly surrounded by stories of the bushfires that have been devastating homes, communities, bushland and native wildlife for the past few months. It has and continues to be incredibly full on and our hearts go out to everyone affected. For more information on the link between these bushfires and climate change, check out episode two. The Pacific Island nations are stepping up to offer assistance to Australia in the midst of the bushfire crisis. Vanuatu has offered almost a quarter of a million dollars to the Rural Fire Service, while an appeal fund has been set up in Papua New Guinea, with the government there also offering to send a thousand military personnel and fire fighters. Private enterprise in Vanuatu, PNG, and also Fiji, are getting involved in fundraising too, even though in Fiji's case they are already dealing with the aftermath of Cyclone Sarai that hit parts of the country just last week. And indeed at this time of the year, in the midst of cyclone season, it is often the disaster prone island countries with small economies that turn to Australia for help. However this time the roles have been reversed, and Pacific analyst, Tess Newton Cain, from the Griffith Asia Institute, says that's despite relations between Australia and the islands being rather frosty in recent times, and particularly over climate change.

Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison on Sunday apologised for taking a family vacation in Hawaii as deadly bushfires raged across several states, destroying homes and claiming the lives of two volunteer firefighters.Morrison cut short a vacation with his wife and adult children amid public anger at his absence from Australia at a time of national crisis. He arrived home Saturday and on Sunday morning spoke to reporters while visiting the headquarters of the Rural Fire Service in Sydney."If you had your time over again and you had the benefit of hindsight, we would have made different decisions," Morrison said. “I am sure Australians are fair-minded and understand that when you make a promise to your kids you try and keep it.”He added: "But as prime minister, you have other responsibilities and I accept that and I accept the criticism."Morrison said this was not a time for political point-scoring but a "time to be kind to each other." He said he is not a trained firefighter, “but I'm comforted by the fact that Australians would like me to be here just simply so I can be here, alongside them, as they are going through this terrible time.”Morrison also answered critics who say his government has not done enough to fight climate change, which has been cited as a major factor in the spate of fires burning across New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia. He said there were also "many other factors" responsible for the unprecedented number of fires during a record-breaking heatwave."There is no argument ... about the links between broader issues of global climate change and weather events around the world," he said. "But I'm sure people equally would acknowledge that the direct connection to any single fire event — it's not a credible suggestion to make that link."Rural Fire Service Commission Shane Fizsimmons described Saturday as an "awful day" for firefighters as strong southerly winds fanned more than 100 fires in New South Wales alone.Dozens of homes have been lost since Thursday in massive wildfires, including the Gospers Mountain blaze that covered more than 460,000 hectares (1.1 million acres). A fire-generated thunderstorm formed over one blaze at Shoalhaven on Saturday, escalating the fire danger.Thirty firefighters from Canada and nine from the United States were among fresh crews set to join the battle against the fires on Sunday.

Something that seems to concern buyers when they are considering moving to the country is the threat of bushfire. This is understandable given the tragedies that have occurred in Australia previously. The good news is that there are ways to help prevent the damage and prepare yourself and your family should it occur. We are lucky enough to have dedicated volunteer rural fire brigades in each of our areas, who all band together to save our communities and homes when bush fire does threaten us. They are an amazing crew who risk their lives to save ours, sometimes fighting for days on end in extreme heat and danger. The community is so lucky to have them. The RFS also has an aviation unit and contracts aircraft for fighting fires from the sky. Helicopters and planes water bomb areas, extinguishing or slowing down the flames before they get near homes. Here are some tips that we have put together for you according to the Rural Fire Service (RFS): Preparing your home to be survive: Make yourself aware of whether you are in a bushfire prone area Clean your gutters regularly from sticks, leaves and debris Metal gutter guards, steel flyscreen on doors and windows are recommended Make sure you maintain any holes, gaps, missing roof tiles etc on your home to eliminate places for fire/embers to enter. Install a sprinkler system on your roof spaces and filling gutters Have quality hoses long enough to water down your entire home and shedding. Ensure gardens and surrounding trees are trimmed and maintained. Keep lawns short. Keep a separate water tank full, specifically for firefighting purposes Of course ensure you have home and contents insurance that covers loss from bushfire Keep Your Family Safe: Always have a bushfire plan that you discuss and stick to if the need arises Watch the fire/wind rating/updates regularly if there are bushfires in your area Have a survival pack which you can quickly grab and take with you if you have to evacuate. Items recommended by the RFS to take are: battery operated radio, spare batteries, first aid kit, waterproof torch, candles with waterproof matches, woollen blankets, emergency contact numbers, waterproof bag, cash, credit cards, medications, toiletry items, mobile phone & charger, pocket knife, important docs & photographs, a change of clothing for each family member plus drinking water. Ensure your pets are in a safe place if you can. Have a little safety pack for any that you can take with you ie; cage, leash, medications, food, drinking water, toy. Identify a safe community place that you can evacuate to in the event of a bushfire Keep drinking loads of water to prevent dehydration. Wear clothing that will protect you as much as possible such as denim jeans, leather boots or shoes, a wide brimmed hat, glasses or goggles, gloves, a non-synthetic mask or cloth and a cotton or wool long sleeve shirt. All in all bushfires are a part of an Australia Summer, something we all have to deal with from time to time, one way or another. Thankfully they don’t seem to occur frequently but being prepared and having a plan is the best bet you can make for survival.  I have lived in the Stroud area all of my life and yes there have been bush fires over the years but they have always been controlled by our wonderful teams of Rural Fire Brigade Women & Men Volunteers. Finally, if you're interested in crisis communications in the Emergency Management sector we preview the Emergency Media and Public Affairs Conference.
