You may have heard the term 'socialism' thrown around before, but what does it actually mean?? Abbie sits down with Jordan van den Lamb who you may know from his 'shit rentals' content on social media. The first of our mid-week podcasts that will be published in the lead up to the election features two figures on opposite ends of the political scale. First up, a Senate candidate from the Victorian Socialists, Jordan Van Den Lamb, better known by his online persona Purple Pingers. Jordan is in the headlines again this week after Anthony Albanese had a shot at him because he is encouraging people in Victoria to squat in empty houses in response to the housing crisis. He's got some rather radical ideas and he does represent the fringe in Australian politics, but as we know in Australian politics, sometimes the fringe even gets a start. The second interview you'll hear is with more of an establishment figure in politics. He's an American named Kyle Middleton. He worked on the Kamala Harris campaign in the last US presidential election and has a lot of interesting insights about what went wrong and what could have been done differently. We chat about how the American political system differs to the Australian political system, but also how the American system is heavily influencing the current Australian federal election campaign. In this bonus episode for Patreon subscribers, Emerald and Tom tackle a much-requested topic - the Greens recent defence policy announcement. Along with withdrawing from AUKUS and reducing military spending, the policy would also invest in local production of defensive drones and missiles. Are the Greens secret warmongers? Are Emerald and Tom secret hacks? Did the Greens fail to anticipate attacks from the left and the Victorian Socialists? Should we even have a military, or capitalism!?! ---------- The show can only exist because of our wonderful Patreon subscriber’s support. Israel's invasion of Lebanon with Omar Hassan After a year of genocidal war in Gaza, Israel has now begun a ground invasion of Lebanon. In less than a week Israel has killed over 2000 people in Lebanon through massive bombardment of civilians in the capital of Beirut and a renewed offensive against the already devastated South. Israeli aggression and repeated military strikes on Yemen, Iraq, Syria and Iran have led the Middle East to the brink of all-out regional war. This episode Chloe spoke to Omar Hassan, a Lebanese-Australian socialist and editor of the Marxist Left Review about the invasion of Lebanon, the threat of regional war and the history of Israeli aggression. Omar touched on the role Israel has played as attack dog for US imperialism from the Suez Crisis invasion of Egypt in 1956 to the 18 year long Israeli occupation of Southern Lebanon from 1982 to 2000. This week the Australian Government, the NSW Police and the capitalist media have engaged in a massive smear campaign against the pro-Palestine anti-war movement. The NSW police unsuccessfully attempted to ban the rallies commemorating the 1 year anniversary of the genocide. Omar spoke about the hypocrisy and cynicism of the media as well as the role of Labor in supporting Israeli aggression and US imperialism. Tom Elliott had some strong views yesterday on Hezbollah flags being flown in the CBD during protests in Melbourne and Sydney over the weekend, and has questioned the organiser of the rally about it on 3AW Mornings. Lebanese Australian and Victorian Socialists representative, Omar Hassan, took exception to the 3AW Mornings host's line of questioning. And it led Tom Elliott to label Mr Hassan "hypocritical". This week Rob, James and Grace gathered round the microphones to bring listeners a diverse selection of radical news. We started off by playing Liz Walsh's speech from Sunday's Pro-Palestine rally which was recorded by Grace at the rally itself. Liz Walsh is a member of Victorian Socialists. Following that we revisited last week's conversation with Elio Celotto, founder of The Coalition for the Protection of Racehorses and the Nup to the Cup campaign, and long term animal activist about his introduction to animal activism, the highly successful Nup to the Cup campaign and the horse-racing industry in general. You can find more information about the realities of horse-racing here and alternatives to the Melbourne Cup here.Last up is a 3CR exclusive interview: Rob interviewed Louise and their friend Sumi. Louise is a Forgotten Australia as well as a victim and survivor of institutional abuse. They spoke of Louise's forced eviction, the lead-up to it, and how the Victorian Government fails to protect vulnerable people by refusing to house them. This interview includes audio from the night police officers and at-least one security guard broke in to Louise's home to forcibly evict her followed by a constructed trespass charge. This audio could be distressing to listeners and as such is preceded by a warning so listeners can skip ahead if they need to. There is a petition for Louise's situation for listeners to sign here. To hear more of Louise's story and continue the fight for Housing Justice attend the Rally for Renters on the 11th of November on the corner of Smith and Gertrude Street, Fitzroy at 1pm. Alongside Louise, social media personality Purple Pingers, members of the Greens, Victorian Socialists, and the Renters and Housing Union will be speaking. Daniel Lopez is the contributor editor overseeing Australia for U.S. based Jacobin magazine which offers a socialist perspective on politics, economics and culture. He is an active member of the 'Victorian Socialists' party which achieved a remarkable result in the 2022 state election. Daniel visited the Discernable studio to explore the evils that neo-liberalism has wrought on the world, where it came from, and what points of agreement a socialist perspective might have with a free-market libertarian perspective. Of particular concern was generational inequality, with a growing resentment among younger Millennial and GenZ cohorts who feel they are being left behind in a declining world. https://linktr.ee/discernableofficial

For 20 years, Luke Donnellan was the Victorian Labor MP for the outer suburban electorate of Narre Warren. He served as the Minister for Roads and Road Safety and Minister for Ports (2014-2018) and then as the Minister for Child Protection and the Minister for Disability, Ageing and Carers (2018-2021). On this week's episode host James Brennan interviews Victorian Socialist candidate Jerome Small about what it is like for a socialist to run in a federal election and to hear what it's like on the ground heading into the federal election.
The federal election campaign, with the notable exception of the Victorian Socialists, is a showcase of the worst aspects of Australian politics. On this episode we put a revolutionary perspective on some of the biggest issues the politicians are talking about and not talking about as they tour the country touting for votes. The Victorian Socialists are taking on the billionaires and parties that represent them in the upcoming Australian federal election. Running on a platform that calls for a radical reorganisation of society and a redistribution of wealth and power, we talk to three Victorian Socialists candidates - Kath Larkin, Jerome Small, and Belle Gibson. How does their campaign compare to their rivals? What have their experiences of running in a federal election have taught them about politics? What inspires them as socialists to run in a parliamentary election? Make sure to listen to his story. He tells it better than us. Thanks so much for being our guest this week, Aran.victoriansocialists.org.au

Today on Uprise Radio we are talking about local council elections and the Victorian Socialists expanded plans - the youngish party is running council candidates in 5 electorates across Melbourne, giving people in Hume, Maribyrnong, Darebin, Moreland and Melbourne City a chance to put an anti-capitalist presence into their local council machinery. Local councils are often characterized as the petty, grasping cousins of Oz' large political family - filled with puppet candidates driven by developers and single issue obsessives. Yet the local council also shapes a community's values and can project and protect citizen's aspirations towards economic justice, access to amenities and a vibrant community life. More recently we have seen small communities activate through councils to provide subsidised clean energy, transport and even broadband. We are joined today by two Victorian Socialist candidates - Liz Walsh is running in Maribyrnong and Daniel Taylor is running in Moreland. Voting will be done via post and closes Friday 23rd of October.
Kath Larkin, who will run for Melbourne Lord Mayor, shared her policies on 3AW Drive. See omnystudio.com/policies/listener for privacy information.
Today Jackson and James are talking about Superannaution - a critical and oft-ignored part of the countries economy. Daniel Lopez (contributing editor at Jacobin Australia and Victorian Socialists member) and Dave Kerin, (Founder of the Earthworker Energy Cooperative, a worker-owned business) join us to talk about what this huge chunk of cash could eman for our future - if we get it right.

I've got some good news and some bad news. Bad news first? Makes sense, take the band-aid off and then soften the sting. Well, all right. The bad news is the IPCC have let us know that we've got until 2030 to get our shit together and there's no chance of that happening, especially when the debate is always framed in terms of what you as an individual can do in the face of widespread corporate negligence. Ha ha! Well, you asked for it. The good news is that Darcy had a nice old time doorknocking for the Victorian Socialists and wants to tell you about it. In the headlines, we have a real melange. Andrew Bolt stopped-clocked it. Wentworth could go bad for the Liberal party, luckily. Stuart Robert is a thief, as you well know, and he'll never be punished for it. And Scott Morrison has some truly insane worker-relocation ideas off the top of his terrible brain. Plus another featured song from Leonardo's Robot's upcoming, at some point, album. This week, "They're Killing the Private Plane Industry".
