This week's mixtape rewind takes us back to an earlier season where we were joined by Tony Smith, formerly of the band Sleeper Agent.Tony Smith's musical journey begins with Saturday mornings filled with Christopher Cross's "Ride Like the Wind" – his mother's chosen soundtrack for family cleaning day – and ends with the transcendent experience of Bon Iver's "Naeem."Each selection marks a transformative moment: discovering Ben Kweller's "Wasted and Ready" at 3am led to a shift away from nu-metal toward indie rock; encountering The Pixies' "Debaser" completely redirected his career aspirations from filmmaking to music; and Modest Mouse's "Trailer Trash" became a personal anthem while working two jobs during high school, feeling trapped in his Kentucky hometown. What makes this episode special is Smith's vulnerability in sharing how deeply these songs penetrated his life. With three tattoos inspired by tracks on his mix, he demonstrates how music becomes physically part of our identity. His emotional description of waiting years to hear Bon Iver's "Naeem" in studio form – "my body filled with this strange chill and warmth at the same time" – perfectly captures music's power to move us beyond words. You can find his Spotify playlist here: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/1RyTOvV7DHYRfW4UdDHTry?si=610402a96acc4fe4 You can find the Super Awesome Mix app list here: https://app.superawesomemix.com/i3BxT4TjZeZyZ4Gb8 Preview of his list:I Want You Back by The Jackson 5Bad, Bad Leroy Brown by Jim CroceWorking Man by RushMMMBop by HansonWasted & Ready by Ben KwellerDebaser by PixiesTrailer Trash by Modest MouseHummingbird by WilcoLust For Life by GirlsFalling In Love Again by Joyce ManorSomething by Julien BakerNaeem by Bon IverFollow us @superawesomemix on Instagram to discover more personal musical journeys and share your own musical milestones that defined different chapters of your life.Support the showVisit us at https://www.superawesomemix.com to learn more about our app, our merchandise, our cards, and more!

The show will include a moving, multi-media experience in which A.J. will perform his own songs, in addition to tracks from Jim's mega-successful albums included in THE DEFINITIVE CROCE, which is being released this year for what would have been Jim's 80th birthday before his untimely passing. It was those songs that eventually led me to do this show in the first place."

On this episode, Karen speaks with AJ Croce, the son of legendary singer songwriter Jim Croce, who tragically died in a plane crash in 1973 when AJ was just 2. Croce died at the height of burgeoning success but left behind a number of noteworthy hits. His 1972 breakthrough album You Don't Mess Around with Jim produced top-charting singles like “Time in a Bottle” and “Bad, Bad Leroy Brown.” Listen as AJ shares his life's journey, including the dark periods that followed the death of his father, the loss of his eyesight as a small child, and the loss of his wife of 24 years due to a rare heart virus. AJ, a successful musician in his own right with ten albums to his credit, shares how music was his constant companion during life's most challenging times.

All through the summer of 1973, there was one song on the radio everywhere that you just couldn't get away from: Jim Croce's smash hit, “Bad, Bad Leroy Brown.” The little Cascade-foothills town of Boring once had its own Bad, Bad Leroy Brown — although when the song came out, very few people then alive were old enough to remember him. His name was Free Coldwell — or at least, that was what he called himself. Like Leroy Brown, he a proud, strutting tough guy who got a humiliating comeuppance. But his downfall didn't come from making a pass at “the wife of a jealous man” in a Boring nightclub or bar. No; Free Coldwell was taken down by the citizens of Boring, who basically played an elaborate practical joke on him — with the help of a professional prizefighter. This week we're discussing every album by the great Jim Croce. Known by most as the guy who did “Time in a Bottle” and "Bad, Bad Leroy Brown," Croce was an exceptional songwriter and folk musician. The man struggled every minute of his career until his tragic and unexpected death in 1973, just days before the release of what would be his last record. Good stuff, sad stuff, real stuff.Closing track: “Salon and Saloon” from I Got a Name (1973)Spotify playlist on Jim Crocehttps://open.spotify.com/user/motherpuncherincPatreonhttps://www.patreon.com/everyalbumeverMerchhttps://pandermonkey.creator-spring.com/Instagram:Mike @pandermonkeyAlex @motherpuncherMike's Picks:You Don't Mess Around with Jim (1972) — Best Album, Personal FavoriteFacets (1966) — Worst Album, Least FavoriteAlex's Picks:You Don't Mess Around with Jim (1972) — Best Album, Personal FavoriteJim & Ingrid Croce (1969) — Worst Album, Least FavoriteAlbums we discussed this episode…Facets (1966)Jim & Ingrid Croce (1969)You Don't Mess Around with Jim (1972)Life and Times (1973)I Got a Name (1973)

You probably are humming it to yourself right now: “Bad, bad Leroy Brown, baddest man in the whole damn town. Badder than old King Kong, meaner than a junkyard dog.” The little Cascade-foothills town of Boring once had its own Bad, Bad Leroy Brown — although when the song came out, very few people then alive were old enough to remember him. In our newest segment, one which reflects on our complete lack of judgement and discernment, we present LIVE SINGING, the segment that features various singers "singing" (yes, that word was intentionally placed within quotation marks!) some of your favorite songs! "Paranoid Pete" and "Cannabis Carl" came in to sing, "Bad, Bad Leroy Brown". Sadly, "Hicksville Harry" chipped in with his voice to add some excitement to the festivities. As Al often says, what could POSSIBLY go wrong??? Enjoy!
