Darius Boyd told Peter Psaltis on Wide World of Sports, "I think at the moment this program will be great for me to sink my teeth into the head coaching role, while still having that time with family." "Rugby league and the mentors that I had around me really helped, I suppose, guide me and support me and, turn me into the man I am today." "The game really helped me and, hopefully, I can do that for the next generation," Boyd continued. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The Story Shared: Darius Boyd shared his journey from being one of the best Rugby League players in the world to being admitted into a mental health facility. Darius opens up about his mental struggle during a time when seemingly on the surface everything looked perfect. He spoke about the courage it took to put his hand up and admit that he needed help in an environment that stigmatised mental well-being. About Darius Boyd: Broncos, Dragons, Knights, Maroons, Australia ... Darius Boyd is an NRL champion. This raw, honest and inspiring episode takes us into the heart of his footy and private life and reveals his fight to conquer his demons and live a better life. Listing statistics, awards and premierships doesn't reveal the battles that Darius Boyd has faced off the field. A teenager with a troubled background, he started his career with innate footy talent but also the emotional baggage of an unknown father, the devastating loss of loved ones, and a mother who was walking a mental health tightrope herself, which as a kid he didn't understand. As his talent shone on the field and his profile increased, Darius struggled. Hiding years of depression and unhappiness, playing footy was his escape. But no one can run from themselves forever. The horrific spinal injury to good mate and Newcastle Knights teammate Alex McKinnon was the catalyst that finally broke Darius. Realising he needed help for his anxiety, depression and suicidal thoughts, he turned his back on football, checked into a mental health facility and began to mend his life and himself. Career Highlights: → 28 State of Origin games for Queensland. → 23 games for Australia. → Clive Churchill winner in the 2010 NRL Premiership. Expertise: → Improving mental health in Athletes. → Professional Rugby League Coach. → Resilience training for youth. For more on Darius Boyd read his book – Battling the Blues. While we love to have some good AFL banter on the show, this week's episode is all about a star from another Aussie sport…
In this week's NRL special, Hayesy recalls some of the most memorable player interviews - for both the right and wrong reasons.
Dan and Ed sit down with Rugby League royalty, Darius Boyd. A man that achieved everything in the game of Rugby League, 2 premierships, over 300 first grade games and a Clive Churchill medal however, it was his battle with mental health and mindset that was his biggest test. In this open and honest conversation we hear about the early life of Darius growing up on the Gold Coast, never meeting or knowing who his father is and what his experience was like spending 3 weeks in a mental health facility in 2014 while playing for the Newcastle Knights. We discuss the importance of strong male role models, how the media easily and incorrectly portrays what professional athletes are actually like as people and what it was like going from a shy kid on the GC who wanted to play just one game of NRL for the Broncos to a Rugby League great.
On this week's episode of ‘All Ball' we look back at the career of Darius Boyd, one filled with premierships, state of origin dynasties and over 337 NRL games for the Brisbane Broncos, St George Illawarra Dragons and the Newcastle Knights. Boyd will be remembered for his incredible displays at origin level as well as his role in the 2010 Premiership for the Dragons where Darius was at his peak playing great football in the fullback position. Boyd will also be remembered as a crucial ambassador in the game for mental health with Darius sharing some of his struggles throughout his career. Through these conversations Boyd helped many others step forward and share their own story and challenges. Next up in ‘the Match' we put two of the Cronulla Sharks greatest players against each other in Paul Gallen and Luke Lewis. Luke Lewis has an incredible career with over 324 games for the Panthers and Sharks. A versatile player that found his home in the backrow and would go on to become one of the best backrowers in the game at every level. For Paul Gallen, you either love him or hate him but his CV speaks for itself. Gallen achieved everything in the game and will be remembered as one of the greatest ever players to represent the Sharks and the NSW Blues. Finally, in ‘Rapid Fire' we continue our Legend Series and select our favourite player from each club. This week we pick our favourite retired players from the North Queensland Cowboys.~ Dan & Coz
Darius Boyd shares his lived experience with mental health and why it is important to seek support instead of remaining silent. Darius shares his three practical tips on how to create space for a conversation.
Broncos legend Darius Boyd has called for resilience training to be given a permanent slot in the curriculum, saying more needs to be urgently done to tackle kids mental health. The family of a man who killed his own brother in a sickening coward punch attack at their niece's birthday party have hit out at the man in court.. A court has heard that Police were unable to prosecute Rowan Baxter after he traumatised his four-year-old daughter by abducting her and fleeing interstate. The state's former top judge proposed changing legislation so courts could set fixed parole release dates when sentences were five years or less to combat a growing parole board backlog. Darius Boyd. He is someone who I have been keen to interview for a very long time. I’ve been fascinated by his journey through the NRL beginning with a premiership and finishing with a wooden spoon. I was fascinated how he followed a single coach to different teams, how he openly checked himself into a mental health facility, and how he has now gone on to educate others and do great things in the mental health space. Darbs (we are in nickname basis now whether he likes it or not ) has quite a story and I know you’ll love this chat! Enjoy x Contact hello@strozkiymedia.com for sponsorship opportunities. Darius Boyd is a man who set out with the childhood dream to play one game for the Brisbane Broncos in the NRL. After making his debut for the club at the age of 18, and winning a premiership in his first season, he went on to spend 15 years playing at the top level of the game. Darius achieved almost every accolade that rugby league could offer, playing and winning honours with his clubs, State and Country before retiring after the 2020 season. You will hear Darius share how as an elite athlete, he learned about the importance of teamwork; the power of great coaches and coaching; and surrounding yourself with quality people and quality information, on and off the field. Rest assured that his journey in sports was much more than that. In 2014, Darius attracted national media attention when he walked away from the game to seek help for his mental health. He returned the following year to restart his career, earning the title of best player for the Queensland Maroons in 2016. Darius now applies the lessons that he has learned and experienced and the strategies both lived and studied to help others achieve the best from their teams through a focus on positive mental health. From goal setting to the importance of hard work; the value a coach and mentor can have; learning from experience; feeling valued and feeling heard; your role in creating the right environment to inspire and support you; how leadership comes in many styles and approaches; how caring about the individual is the foundation of building a successful team; as well as helping those around to you to get better, to be better and to do better, were just some of the things I took away from this conversation. They say there is no ‘I' in team, but Darius Boyd has a slightly different spin on it, and you can head over to theiinteam.com.au to find out a lot more. I would also recommend that you check out his book “Battling the Blues” if you get the chance. I also suggest you read the original post that Darius posted on LinkedIn that inspired me to reach out to him in the first place. You can find it here - Five Reasons For Maroons Origins SuccessSo a big thank you to Darius and to you for taking some time to check it out and give this a listen. If you enjoyed it, let me know what you took from it and I would love it if you shared it with someone else that you feel will get something from it. Of course if you are working on your own goals and performance improvement and want to explore how our coaching could help, you can reach out to me over at infinitepie.co.uk.In the meantime, keep doing stuff that matters, with people who count.

Greg Inglis has announced his immediate retirement from rugby league. The Rabbitohs captain revealed his decision on Monday, calling it quits on his glittering career nearly two years earlier than he'd planned to.The 32-year-old, who has claimed multiple premierships alongside a lengthy representative career, arrived at South Sydney headquarters to deliver the news."I think it's time and it's the right decision for me," an emotional Inglis told the media on Monday morning. "I've been contemplating it for a while now."As of today, it's official. There's been a lot of speculation out there. My body hasn't given up on me, but I think it's time for me. It's time for me to go and just enjoy life and look after the four horses I have now."It's been an incredible journey ... a remarkable ride. One of the most decorated players of the 21st century, Inglis has been battling a serious shoulder problem and hasn't played since he was injured in round two against St George Illawarra. He ends his tenure on the field with 263 games under his belt, not including 32 Origin appearances and 39 Kangaroos caps."Most of the boys were pretty shocked even though they knew it was coming," Inglis continued. "They were taken aback by it. What I'll miss most is the dressing shed."Inglis was thrown a curveball mid-press conference with a reporter asking him why he chose to play for Queensland in State of Origin despite being born on NSW's mid north coast."I chose to go to Queensland because I was happy up there and felt more at home. I felt wanted and felt I belonged there," he said. The legendary back squashed any thought of him jumping on the winning side, reminding fans he joined the Maroons in a slump."NSW was on the brink of winning four straight," he said, before dropping another rib-tickling one-liner."I was from Kempsey, which is just on the other side to Coolangatta."Rabbitohs coach Wayne Bennett reflected on the Queensland great's career and declared him one of the finest NRL players of his generation."It's the hardest part in a footballer's life to know when your time is up."Through conversations with people around him, he's been able to come to a decision he is comfortable with. He has a wonderful reputation and is one of the finest players of his generation."The end was always in sight for Inglis but it was never meant to come this soon. Still Queensland's State of Origin captain, he planned to bid farewell to the representative arena in 2019 before ending his NRL career at the end of next season.Instead though, a poor range of movement in his left shoulder has him struggling to lift his arm above his head or away from his body.Dragons skipper James Graham told Fox Sports he "couldn't believe" the Queensland great was set to bow out."He deserves better ... not everyone gets a fairytale exit from the game," he said.Damaging at both centre and fullback in club and representative football, Inglis made his name as Melbourne began their dominant era in 2006 and remained part of the Storm's success until forced to leave amid the salary cap scandal. He landed at Redfern desperate to end the Rabbitohs' title drought, doing so in the 2014 grand final as he scored the final try and sent the burrow into delirium. He was just as dominant at representative level, forming arguably the greatest centre-wing combination in State of Origin history with Darius Boyd on Queensland's left edge. There he scored the majority of his 18 Origin tries, while also crossing the line 31 times in 39 Kangaroos appearances.
