Caring for Animals & Creating Trust

Jane Dukes, associate director, Value Chain and Consumer Affairs, speaks with John Stika, a meat scientist and President of Certified Angus Beef and Emily Metz, President and CEO of the American Egg Board. May is National Beef Month and National Egg Month and so in this episode our industry leading guests join us to recognize the contributions of layer farmers and cattle ranchers while gaining insights into the beef and egg industries. John guides grassroots programs and delivers premium beef from family farmers and ranchers to consumer's dinner tables. Emily has worked as the head of Global Research and Development Communications and New Product Marketing for the world's largest animal genetics company. Together they discuss how the agriculture industry can better interact and engage with consumers. “Consumers do not buy on price alone. They buy in price in relation to value. And if you understand what consumers value and you align your production systems for those to align with that. I think the opportunity is there to be the financial beneficiary of that alignment and those decisions. I think the data supports the optimism that we're seeing from a production standpoint and a beef merchandising standpoint for the demand that consumers have for our products not just here in the US but around the world.” - John StikaIn a Merck Animal Health consumer research study conducted last year, two-thirds of consumers reported transparency in animal protein is extremely or very important, but only 35 percent of consumers surveyed feel the animal protein industry is transparent about sustainability or animal care/treatment. That's a gap Merck Animal Health feels we can fill. The egg industry is currently on a mission to simplify labels and allow consumers easier access to information in selecting their eggs based on what their family needs and the values they want to support. “We need to do a better job of talking about what those different production styles and practices really mean and making sure that people understand that there are trade offs. And I frankly think this is a conversation that probably agriculture needs to have across the board. There's no one silver bullet in terms of production and there's trade-offs in everything.” - Emily MetzThis Week's Podcast:Meet John Stika, is a meat scient ist and President of Certified Angus Beef and Emily Metz, President and CEO of the American Egg Board.Explore the commonalities between the egg and beef industry in addressing consumer concerns and expectationsDiscover the discussions that are being had to encourage transparency in the agriculture industry and those yet to come

A Glimpse Into a Post-Roe Future: Funding Abortion in a State That's a "Destination" for Them

Today on the podcast is the Baltimore Abortion Fund (BAF), a grassroots nonprofit that provides financial support for people traveling to and living in Maryland who need abortion care, and as the Supreme Court decides in June on a case that threatens legal abortion like never before, they're working to remove the financial barriers for those seeking abortion care.  As of late 2021, 30% of BAF's callers were already from out of state, and the majority of people that BAF supports are 13 weeks or further into their pregnancy. BAF discusses on the podcast the implications of further state restrictions on abortion care - both for people seeking abortions who live in states with severe restrictions, AND those seeking abortions who live in less restrictive states (like Maryland) which increasingly have out-of-state residents coming to them for abortions. BAF's Board Co-President, Brigitte Winter, and Director of Development & Communications, Lynn McCann, join Femtastic to discuss the impact they're already seeing of restrictive laws in the south (like Texas' SB8), the costs and obstacles involved for patients seeking abortions (even in relatively "friendly" states), how that affects abortion care and availability for people both in-state and out-of-state, and how things may get worse after the Supreme Court hands down their decision in Dobbs v. Jackson in June 2022.  BAF also discusses developments in the reproductive justice movement that are aiming to respond to the possible overturning of Roe, including uniting regional abortion funds and, with the FDA's recent loosening of rules related to medication abortion, the possibility of medication abortion as a means to increase capacity of clinics and accessibility to patients. Lastly, BAF discusses the role that abortion funds play in reducing stigma and creating a culture shift in the way abortion is talked about.  This episode was recorded in late December 2021. By the way, you can support abortion funds via the event that is HAPPENING NOW: The National Abortion Access Fund-a-Thon is an annual season of in-person, virtual, and hybrid events where community members (like you!) come together to raise money for abortion funds. Across the country, conservative foes of abortion rights have pushed “heartbeat bills” that would ban abortion after about six weeks of pregnancy. Journalist Amy Littlefield and a team of law and journalism students from UC Berkeley investigate how this law went from being dismissed as a fringe idea, even by traditional right-to-life groups, to getting enforced in Texas.  - Relevant Femtastic Podcast episodes: A Clinic Making Mail-Order Abortion a Reality (November 2021) What's Up with the Texas Abortion Ban and How Can People All Over the US Access Abortion Pills Online (September 2021)

There's one thing we all had to do in some form or another in 2020—pivot! Nowhere is that more clear than when it comes to holding events, especially when those events are a significant driver of income for your organization. No one did that better than the New England Innocence Project. Led by their Director of Development and Communications, Jordan Salvatoriello, with the help of Liz Page and her team at Liz Page Associates, the 2020 event exceeded both their goals for the event and the amount raised the year before! In this episode of Messaging on a Mission, we learn not only how they did it, but what they expect events to look like post-pandemic!   Episode Guests Liz Page  After ten years as a performing artist with the Oregon Mime Theatre, Liz Page moved to Boston in 1982 and began her development career at the Worcester Art Museum. As Walk Manager for the first 5 years, she led the team that raised consciousness and millions of dollars to fight the epidemic. In 1994, Liz opened Liz Page Associates, a fundraising and special event production company that proudly celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2019. Liz and her staff have built a reputation for producing special events for nonprofits, academic institutions, and corporations that not only meet but exceed significant financial, marketing, and employee engagement goals.  As a volunteer leader Liz has served on the boards of The Shared Heart Initiatives, GLAAD (Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation,) Hospice West, and the Hospice on Mission Hill Project, Women's Statewide Legislative Network, and Fenway Health. She is the Country Director at The School of Life – an unconventional learning academy that trains career professionals to excel in their careers. She is also the Founder of When Women Win – a women empowerment platform providing affordable access for women to the inspiration, knowledge, and opportunities they need to succeed. Below is a summary of the interview The Importance of Communication for Business Growth with Motola Oyebanjo She defined communications as a way or structure through which organizations pass their message across to key stakeholders; customers, government, media, community as well as their employees. She was of the opinion that for any organization set up for profit they would need to listen to and hear their customers if they are to deliver. She advised business owners to always endeavor to ask for feedback from their customers as the information would be helpful in improving their business for better. She spoke on the need for business owners to understand where they stand and how they are perceived so as to always communicate the right brand personality to their customers. In the process of attending to the customer, pushing out content she said that brand personality is being created and will go far to determine if a customer will choose to buy or not. She said that in this age of Social media SME’s can harness the opportunity to reach out to their customers at no cost by creating a structure of taking feedback from their customers. She said that it was important for organizations to build an Employee Communications Culture around their business as unhappy employees often do not deliver on quality service. She went further to say that it was important for organizations to create structures that inform, educate, take opinions, engages and rewards their employees. Speaking on strategies to growing one’s business network she said that individuals and business owners can start by creating value for others so as to leave lasting impressions in people’s minds. She said that if anyone was to find their career path, they needed to understand their personality type so as to guide them in discovering where they will best fit in. To business owners looking to hire personnel, she advised that they look out for personality traits being that someone who isn’t a talker would often not do well in a sales position. She talked about the four major temperaments as the driven choleric, the sanguine talker, the melancholic thinker and the easy-going phlegmatic adding that there were 16 different personality types. In changing business narratives, she advised that businesses begin to think in angles and look out for stories that will resonate with their audience. She advised business owners to avoid the attitude of always writing about themselves but to write instead with their audience in mind. She revealed that an online career course had been recently launched at the school of life where she is the Country Director and is set to guide people through understanding their career path.
