It's not uncommon for us to talk about the unique balance of brokenness and beauty in foster care. In this episode, I am joined by someone who has experienced the good, the bad, and the ugly of the foster care system. Darren Morris is a father and husband, a store manager of a Starbucks, small business owner, and founder of a soon-to-be nonprofit, A Foster's Hope. He entered the foster care system at the age of four and was eventually adopted eight years later into a family that now has 17 kids. (You read that right! 17!) In this honest conversation, Darren shares the impact of being a young kid bouncing around in the system, how his foster care experience has shaped who he is today, the value of mentors in his life, the redemption he's seen in his story, and how he's navigated trauma and overwhelming emotions.
On this week's episode of Doc Talks, we sit down with David & Stacey Howell. David, being adopted, had a desire to adopt. When he and Stacy decided to adopt, they set out to adopt a baby boy. However, as chance would have it, they ended up adopting twin girls, then later their baby sister! Their biological children were happy with the adoption, but their son wanted a boy. However, when he saw the twins, he fell in love. Not to spoil the episode, but the Howells allow their adopted children's biological mom to be a part of their lives! As a high achieving mom of an 8 and 10 year old, I sometimes find myself trying to give my kids MY solution to their problems. And then I wonder why they won't listen to me!!! When I step back and take a breath I realise that I've been sucked into the same drama that I coach women to overcome. It happens to all of us, and with awareness, it can happen less often (I promise!) The reason that we get stuck in this battle with our kids is because they haven't been given the chance to develop their own solutions. It's not an easy re-frame, but it sure is powerful. With all the daily challenges that life throws at us, our mental well-being is most important. Two things can help improve our mental well-being. The first is giving to others in need to create a better world, and the second is to laugh out loud as it triggers the release of endorphins. Both these actions have a unique feel-good effect. They say laughter is the best medicine - so why not get a dose and get laughing with Cotlands this Mandela Day and help them change a child's life. The Addicted Child is a parent's guide to adolescent substance abuse. It guides parents through the maze of teen addiction and gives them a roadmap to help their child through the diagnosis, treatment and recovery process. In Rick's words: I have worked with adults and adolescents diagnosed with psychiatric and substance abuse disorders. I recently retired from Menninger Clinic in Houston Texas which is one of the nation's top ten psychiatric hospitals. While at Menninger I worked with adults and adolescents diagnosed with psychiatric and substance use disorders. Rick's 3 top tips 1. Mental health issues and substance abuse often accompany each other. It is important that both be treated. A treatment plan that addresses only the substance abuse but ignores the mental health issues is a treatment plan that is likely to fail 2. When a child is abusing alcohol or drugs it's important that parents obtain a comprehensive assessment that focuses not just on the substance use but also any accompanying mental health issues. The assessment must be comprehensive and address medical, psychological and addictions issues 3. Parents should carefully monitor their child and be aware of any changes they see. It's important that parents stay tuned to changes in their child's behaviours, attitudes, school performance and peers. Changes in these can sometimes signal a child who may be using substances. Children are impressionable and malleable. Just about the same way that religious people are but let me not digress. My point is that it is possible for a child to follow course that they have been put on and go through it in absolute trust and blindness. Yikes! So when we tell our children to study hard so that they can get a job and escape hardship and poverty, guess what? That is exactly what they do by the billions around the world. Who takes time to cast vision for them? Vision for leadership? Impact? Transformation of the world? Creation and invention and innovation of things? If we don't do this, the default takes shape. They grow up to "Make it in life" whatever that means. Listen to this.
In this episode, I talk about some things that are kind of off the beaten path of our journey and not always addressed so you may not realize some of them and how they might impact your child every day. Things like face-blindness and tone of voice just to name a couple of them.

When Adrianna Stephenson's son was just nineteen months old he was diagnosed with a golf ball-sized brain tumour in and around the hypothalamus. He immediately underwent a subtotal resection but about 3 months post-op the tumour had grown back to almost it's original size already. Adrianna and her husband, as well as the surgeon, did not want him to undergo another operation and so chemo was their only course of action. At the age of two, he started on a trio of chemotherapy drugs for what was scheduled to be an eighteen month protocol. Doing a bunch of research, Adrianna learned about the possible benefits of a ketogenic diet in conjunction with the chemo. About 3 and a half months into the treatment she started him on a very strict ketogenic diet and the next MRI showed that the tumour had shrunk by 30%. and about 10 months after starting on the diet we was declared NED (No Evidence of Disease). He is now five years old and remains NED. Adrianna is now committed to paying it forward and works tirelessly with the Max Love Foundation and in other ways to teach parents how to do this with their children. I found it particularly interesting to hear how she teaches parents to get their kids to do this and I fully agree with her idea that all kids should be eating this way to prevent them from getting sick in the first place.

I spoke yesterday to about the most sensible person we’ve ever had on this show. Ruth Money is a victims advocate, and she makes a lot of sense when it comes to the right to silence law. She’s been agitating for change to this law for more than 10 years. She calls our child abuse stats an indictment on this country. It actually beggars belief that we continue to hurt and kill our most vulnerable, and that we continue to let a cone of silence fall over the top of that.I asked her how, with case, after case, after case, that makes us sick to our stomachs, and with the backing of the Police Association and the Commissioner for Children, how it is that we still don’t have change to this law. She said she is up against a pretty adamant legal fraternity, who're fastidious about the law and the fact that you may incriminate yourself if you talk, she claims they take that very seriously and hold that in higher regard than anything else. But why is the right of the child, not above your right to silence in regards what you did to them? A child has a basic right to life, surely that trumps all?Ruth pointed out we can get rid of the right to silence in fraud cases, but we can’t do it when it comes to maiming or killing our children, which as she put it, is “nuts”.In the most recent case of the badly beaten 4 year old boy, the PM weighed in and ‘urged’ the family to come forward, but as we’ve seen with gangs and guns, and domestic violence abusers, ‘urging’ people to do the right thing, goes nowhere. This shouldn’t be an opt-in situation. Justice Minister Andrew Little has ruled out revoking the law. So this government won’t be changing it. He sides with the lawyers who claim it may incriminate innocent people. Act says it’ll fight for a law change if elected, National says it would remove it as well.Ruth Money made the point that we can sit in urgency in this country over more minor things, we can fund millions of dollars being spent on a cycle way going over the Auckland Harbour bridge, but we don’t worry enough about the fact our children are being beaten and people are keeping quiet about it. It’s out of kilter, and protecting these people, no matter what the legal fraternity thinks, is unjust. Because it’s the children who don’t have a voice, we must do the right thing by them, because they’re innocent victims here. The longer we allow silence, the more we send the message to abusers that you can beat maim or even kill your child, and you won’t necessarily be held accountable. We send the message to children, that the adults in their lives who’re supposed to protect them, may not. It’s utterly wrong, and advocates like Ruth are right, changing this law is way overdue.

Following one’s passion isn’t always about making our own life better — sometimes, we get a very unique opportunity to fully harness the skills, talent, experience, connections, and interests we possess in the service of someone we love. This is precisely what happened in Rupert Isaacson’s case when his young son, Rowan, was diagnosed with autism. And in Rupert’s very real quest to help his little boy, he discovered a therapeutic approach that could help others who are on the same journey. To share this desperately needed support as broadly as possible, Rupert wrote a book, created a film, and established a foundation. He’s even taken his message personally to the world to anyone who would listen through clinics, conferences, personal appearances, partnering with neurologists and therapists around the world, and doing everything in his power to shift our thinking about autism and how to support autists in a more nurturing and effective way. In this week's Season 3 premiere episode — that also marks Rupert Isaacson’s return to the podcast — he shares about his incredible journey with his son, Rowan. He provides insight into how autists experience autism, how Rowan’s journey is helping thousands of people (autistic or not) through the Horse Boy Foundation and Kids Must Move, their journey through Mongolia and why they chose to film absolutely everything on their trip — even the moments that seemed far too raw for the camera, and some of the powerful moments that really stand out to him when he looks back on his family’s journey. Topics of Discussion: [:24] About today’s episode. [1:51] Rupert speaks about the early days of his son, Rowan’s, autism diagnosis and the beginning of their journey to help him cope through the magic of horses. [5:34] Rupert provides his insight into how autists experience autism. [11:43] Rupert speaks about the incredible transformation he noticed in his son after the San Bushmen healers prayed over him during their ceremonies in Mongolia. [16:55] How Rowan’s journey is helping thousands of people (autistic or not) through the Horse Boy Foundation and Kids Must Move. [18:33] What is shamanism? And how can it help aid healthy brain function and be especially beneficial to those with autism? [21:40] Rupert reflects on his journey with Rowan and speaks more about the characteristics of shamanism and the major differences between it and western medicine. [24:25] Rupert speaks about their journey through Mongolia and why they chose to film everything on their trip. [26:34] Were there ever any moments that were too raw for the camera? [29:29] When Rupert looks back on his family’s journey, what stands out for him? [32:18] When does that healthy reliance on proven methods in Western medicine become an impediment to utilizing new methods that have incredibly positive outcomes? [35:02] Rupert’s book, The Horse Boy, was received with stellar reviews — most notably perhaps was the review from the Autism Society of America’s former President and CEO, Lee Grossman. Does it ever strike Rupert the degree to which his journey is helping to improve others’ lives? [36:54] Rupert offers some guidance to those on a similar path to his own. [38:42] What’s next for Rupert and Rowan? [45:42] Where to find out more about the work Rupert is doing. Know Someone Inspirational, Whose Life Has Been Forever Changed Because of Horses? Troy Hickerson, global nutrition activist and co-founder of Active For Good (activeforgood.com), delivers an important, informative overview of the crucial work that needs to be done, and what we can all do, to save malnourished children globally. Troy Hickerson is a passionate business leader. For nearly twenty years Hickerson has applied his in-depth knowledge of problem-solving and opportunity creation to help small to mid-sized companies utilize technology to succeed. As a cloud services expert, Hickerson wanted to find a way to merge his technology experience with his personal goals of serving those who suffer from extreme poverty and malnutrition. As Hickerson states, one-quarter of children in the developing world are malnourished. Hickerson splits his time between assisting startups and established businesses with service business operations, positioning and strategy, business model analysis, and problem-solving, and pushing his organization, Active For Good, forward on its mission to assist in the global nutrition problem. Hickerson explains the connection his organization makes between the world's populations, between those who want to lose calories and those who need calories. Through a series of programs Active For Good runs, for every calorie someone burns when they are working to stay active can equate to a calorie of food given to a malnourished child. By creating activities and teams, users of the platform are motivated to help themselves while simultaneously helping others in the world. Making a difference is what Active For Good is all about. Hickerson talks about the important issues that Active For Good tackles in its mission to create change and help people globally. Active For Good was initiated by the founders of MANA Nutrition, a non-profit organization that manufactures RUTF (Ready to Use Therapeutic Food) used to combat severe acute malnutrition and childhood death. Hickerson explains how MANA ships over 500,000 packets of RUTF per day as they provide life-saving therapeutic food via partners such as Save the Children, World Vision, Doctors without Borders, UNICEF, and USAID. Through the Active For the Good app, wellness teams, individuals, and employee groups can take the challenge, sign up online, and get started with healthy activities that will not only improve their health but will generate much-needed revenue so life-saving nutritional foods can be delivered to those in need. Activity is tracked through Google Fit, Apple's HealthKit, or similar tracking tools, and company employees, friends, or whomever, can engage in competition that keeps it fun while working toward personal goals, and goals for humanity. Through the point system, points count toward meals for children. And the app shows you what the process is like and creates an educational opportunity to learn about the areas of the world where people are truly in need. Hickerson discusses the enthusiasm he sees in people when they get a sense of how their small actions can make an enormous impact on children's lives globally. As he states, nutrition is critical in a child's developing years, and there can be severe consequences if a child is malnourished, even if they survive. Thus the Active For Good mission provides an opportunity for companies, groups, and individuals to lend a hand to those who need it, which is a vital part of the human experience.

LCHF Family 018: Talking to the Adults in Your Child's Life about LCHF Released: October 12, 2017 On today's episode, Anne and Abby take on a question from Listener Marina that was posted to the Facebook community group: Wanted to ask if anyone has verbiage tips on how to keep the junk offerings (to the kids) at bay? I'm struggling with how not to offend when it comes to play dates, birthday parties, etc. Our kids are 6 and 8 and we follow LCHF/NSNG at home, but outside the house, it's a constant struggle for the kiddos. Too often, the "every now and then treat", turns into multiple times a week. Some phrases to have at the ready would be so helpful. Thanks for the question, Marina! We hope we offered some helpful phrases and tips to make it easier for you to get the other adults in your children's lives to respect your parenting decision in this matter.
