Ep. 123 Van Halen - Diver Down - Review & Reaction!   Van Halen's Diver Down, released in April 1982, stands as one of the band's more polarizing records—both celebrated for its playful, party-rock vibe and criticized for its heavy reliance on cover songs. Clocking in at just over 31 minutes, the album blends original material with a series of classic rock and pop covers, showcasing the band's versatility and sense of humor. While not as influential as Van Halen I or 1984, Diver Down helped reinforce Van Halen's image as hard rock's ultimate party band, solidifying their mainstream appeal in the early '80s. Diver Down is often seen as a transitional album—a bridge between Van Halen's raw early years and their polished commercial peak. While it's cover-heavy and short, it captures a carefree, rebellious spirit that was essential to the band's identity. For better or worse, it proved that Van Halen could do whatever they wanted—and still go platinum.

https://www.youtube.com/live/qowvTjMPyGc?si=nwSTUA-EGA5MD8L3 The Story of 1984: How Van Halen's Biggest Album Became a Rock Masterpiece When Eddie Van Halen first introduced Jump to the band, the reaction was far from enthusiastic. David Lee Roth, in particular, balked, arguing that Eddie was a guitar hero, not a keyboard player. However, producer Ted Templeman immediately recognized its potential, calling it a “stone-cold hit.” That moment of skepticism turned to triumph as Jump became Van Halen's only #1 hit, propelling their 1984 album into rock history. 1984 wasn't just another album—it was Van Halen's magnum opus. Released in a year symbolized by George Orwell's dystopian novel, the album instead became the soundtrack to a carefree, hedonistic era. Eddie Van Halen's groundbreaking blend of guitar mastery and keyboard innovation defined the album, which dominated charts, airwaves, and hearts. The Legacy of 1984 A commercial juggernaut, 1984 earned RIAA Diamond certification for selling over 10 million copies in the U.S. alone. It remains one of the best-selling rock albums of the 1980s, rivaled in the band's catalog only by their 1978 debut. Its tight 33-minute runtime delivered four charting singles: Jump (#1), Panama (#13), I'll Wait (#13), and Hot for Teacher (#56). Even deep cuts like Top Jimmy, Drop Dead Legs, and House of Pain showcased the band's fiery creativity. The album opened with 1984, an instrumental synth piece that set the tone for Eddie's vision of a brave new world. This wasn't just an album—it was a statement. The Road to Stardom By the early 1980s, Van Halen was already a top touring act. Their 1982 Hide Your Sheep tour sold out all 83 North American dates, and their South American debut introduced them to thousands of new fans. In 1983, their headline performance at the US Festival's Heavy Metal Day drew 375,000 fans and set a record with a $1.5 million payday. Eddie's growing celebrity status elevated the band further. His marriage to actress Valerie Bertinelli brought Van Halen into mainstream households, while his iconic guitar solo on Michael Jackson's Beat It created an unexpected crossover between rock, pop, and R&B. Building 1984 Frustrated by the rushed recording of Diver Down and its reliance on cover songs, Eddie sought more control. He built a home studio, 5150, named after the California police code for a mentally disordered person. With engineer Donn Landee, Eddie created a space where he could experiment on his terms. The 5150 studio became the birthplace of 1984. Eddie's fascination with keyboards took center stage, especially with the Oberheim OB-Xa synthesizer. While synths had appeared on earlier Van Halen albums, they were often disguised as distorted guitars. On 1984, tracks like Jump and I'll Wait embraced their synth-driven identity while maintaining the band's hard rock roots. Eddie's guitar innovations also shone brightly. He used a rare 1958 Gibson Flying V for tracks like Hot for Teacher and Drop Dead Legs, while Steve Ripley's stereo guitars added unique textures to songs like Top Jimmy. The album balanced pop hooks with progressive rock influences, showcasing Eddie's genius. The Breakthrough and the Fallout When 1984 was released, Van Halen had reached their peak. The album's success was undeniable, but tensions within the band were rising. Eddie's increasing control over the creative process clashed with Roth's vision. While 1984 cemented their place as rock icons, it also foreshadowed Roth's departure and the end of Van Halen's original lineup. A Masterpiece That Endures Four decades later, 1984 remains a defining moment in rock history. It's a testament to Eddie Van Halen's relentless innovation and the band's ability to push boundaries. From the infectious synth riff of Jump to the hard-hitting grooves of Panama and Hot for Teacher, the album captures a band at their peak—fearless, ambitious, and unforgettable.

After rushing through their 5th album Diver Down, Van Halen wanted to return with an original album that would establish them as the preeminent hard rock band in the USA. Eddie Van Halen had completed his home 5150 studio which would allow him to develop ideas and work out the synthesizer sounds that he was experimenting with but which had also been shot down by lead singer David Lee Roth and producer Ted Templeman. But Eddie was ready to mix his guitar heroics with the new age sounds that were popular at the time. By mixing Eddie's musicianship with Dave's showmanship and throwing in some MTV, Van Halen became the biggest band in the world! The videos for Jump, Panama and Hot For Teacher were all over MTV that summer and even won them some video awards. But trouble was brewing in the Van Halen camp as not everyone was on the same page. Van Halen's "David Lee Roth years" refer to a period in the band's history when David Lee Roth served as the lead vocalist. This era is often considered the band's most iconic and commercially successful phase. It spans from the band's formation in the early 1970s through Roth's departure in 1985, with a brief reunion in the early 2000s. Here are some key points about Van Halen during the David Lee Roth years: 1. Formation and Debut Album: Van Halen was formed in Pasadena, California, in 1972. The band consisted of Eddie Van Halen on guitar, Alex Van Halen on drums, Michael Anthony on bass, and David Lee Roth as the flamboyant frontman. They released their self-titled debut album in 1978, which quickly gained attention for Eddie Van Halen's groundbreaking guitar work. 2. Musical Innovation: Eddie Van Halen's guitar-playing technique, characterized by finger-tapping and incredible speed, revolutionized the rock guitar scene. Songs like "Eruption" showcased his virtuosity and set a new standard for guitarists. 3. Commercial Success: With albums like "Van Halen II," "Women and Children First," "Fair Warning," and "Diver Down," the band achieved tremendous commercial success. Hits like "Runnin' with the Devil," "Jump," "Hot for Teacher," and "Panama" became rock anthems and solidified their place in music history. 4. Live Performances: Van Halen was renowned for their electrifying live performances, with David Lee Roth's charismatic stage presence and the band's high-energy shows contributing to their status as one of the greatest live acts in rock history. 5. Personality Clashes: Despite their musical success, tensions within the band, particularly between Roth and the Van Halen brothers, led to Roth's departure from the band in 1985. 6. Sammy Hagar Era: After David Lee Roth's departure, Sammy Hagar replaced him as the lead vocalist, and the band continued to enjoy commercial success through the late 1980s and early 1990s. 7. Reunion: In 1996, David Lee Roth briefly reunited with Van Halen for a successful tour. A second reunion occurred in 2007, resulting in a new album and tour. The David Lee Roth years of Van Halen are remembered as a golden era for the band, marked by innovation, unforgettable music, and legendary performances. David Lee Roth's distinctive vocals and stage presence, combined with Eddie Van Halen's guitar wizardry, defined a sound and style that remains influential in the world of rock music. http://www.van-halen.com/ https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCfOTTeREY6_1LSW5M0bdG7g?feature=gws_kp_artist&feature=gws_kp_artist https://x.com/vanhalen?s=21&t=Mzw5de5zsR-SDDbhyzH0Lg https://instagram.com/vanhalen?igshid=NzZhOTFlYzFmZQ== https://www.facebook.com/VanHalen?mibextid=LQQJ4d https://youtube.com/@vanhalenVEVO?si=BQEEZKzEby4C8W7S https://music.apple.com/us/artist/van-halen/166529 #VanHalen #DavidLeeRoth #EddieVanHalen #RockLegends #ClassicRock #GuitarHero #VanHalenFans #VanHalenLive #1980sMusic #RockHistory https://www.facebook.com/LukeBuysVintage?mibextid=LQQJ4d Luke Buys Vintage I buy vintage band shirts. Hey Listener, put on some comfortable shoes, because today we're going on a family vacation. My dad Rick Mansfield returns to the basement and my mom Cindy Mansfield makes her first experience on the show. Today's episode is all about their lifetime of traveling and how things have changed since they've retired. Topics this week include: Making time for me and dog talk. Going to the Ham radio festival and selling fire trucks in West Virginia. Living in a basement apartment near Fort Knox. Getting stuck in Germany instead of Hawaii. Living in a garage with a BMW. Shipping a Camero to Europe and driving on the Autobahn. Well, World War 3 might be happening. The best gunner in the 3rd armored division in Germany. Family vacations at theme parks. Traveling in a pre and post 9/11 world. Seeing and smelling buffalo. Watching the Buckeyes win a National Championship live. Of course the Led Zeppelin tribute band has a gong. The Margaritaville RV Park and Jimmy Buffet tailgates of yore. The legendary gas powered blender. If you haven't listened to it yet, go check out WYI? Episode 18 Diver Down, Not the Van Halen Album with Rick Mansfield where my dad and I talk about scuba diving. It is a fan favorite episode and the one I get the most questions about from listeners.

Wake the Faith up Slayer… This is Garth Heckman with the David Alliance and you can reach me at TDAgiantslayer@gmail.com      Brought to you by wellbuiltbody.com Gym Apparel for men and women that rocks and shocks and ain't for everybody - but just might be for you. wellbuiltbody.com     The brand, logo or as some say the Mindshare. When you think of McDonalds you think of the golden arches. Nike has the swoosh, Apple has the apple,  My two favorite logos that I love are the Jordan logo… He is mid air slamming the ball, but my all time favorite is the Van Halen black, white and red stripes. its on his original Frankenstein guitar, its on the The best of both worlds album, it is kind of represented on Diver Down but you can find it used on Shoes, hats, guitars, stickers - anything that has the black and white and red stripes is immediately Van Halen. When you use the red, black and white in other forms and it reminds you of Van Halen you have what is called mindshares. It's worth millions and why people have their logos trademarked. McDonalds may be worth 194.5 Billion market shares… and it is as of today. But it's mindshares are worth TRILLIONS. Meaning you are known through out the world simply by a big yellow M. look, i can create a logo of a big purple z and it will mean nothing… no matter how cool the logo is, it has no mindshares. So the point is, you have a logo, you have mindshares… what reminds people of you? What do you remind people of?  Ecl. 7:1 A good name is better than precious ointment, and the day of death than the day of birth.   What a great mindshare… just think about the guy who goes out running and comes back sore and stiff and in pain… and someone comes and rubs Painstop ointment on him and as it moisturizes and soothes and stops the pain and brings relief - he says “wow this reminds me of my Friend Ty Peterson”. Or you are parched from digging holes and putting in fence posts all day in Texas… and a truck rolls up with a cooler full of ice cold drinks, Gatorade, Mt. Dew, Monsters, ice tea… and as you grab your favorite and suck it down you think “wow this reminds me of my buddy Scott Askew”.  I want my logo or my mindshare to be a person who loves to share Jesus, who is quick to pray for people… people they don't even know. I want people to see a neon light at night and say “wow that reminds me of Garth”. When people see a person enter a dangerous situation, or when a snake handler picks up a cobra or a lion tamer walks into a cage… I want them to think of me going into the most hostile area to tell people about jesus. When people get a bonus, or find money or even get a free gas card… I want them to think… this is probably from Garth… that dude loves to give away money to those in need.      What do you want your logo or mindshare to be? Guess what… it doesn't happen by chance. It's gotta happen by choice. You get to choose. Listen to Prov. 22:1 A good name is to be chosen rather than great riches, and favor is better than silver or gold. You get to choose what your name means by your daily choices… you choose your name, your reputation by your daily choices… makes sense right?    As Yoda has spoken… Choose wisely young Padawan     Here is a warning… you can work years forming a mindshare, a reputation and you can ruin it in a matter of seconds.  My grandpa tells a story of his church years ago… before it was the thing to do, they put on a huge Christmas program with kids, adults, choir, animals the whole deal. They spent thousands of dollars… and again this was before such a thing was popular. The whole city of Kansas was talking about it. Opening night with a live orchestra… lights go black, a man dressed as an angel is being led down by a wire from the balcony… the place is packed, people are in awe, the music is lightly playing in the background… and half way down the cable lowering the guy down snaps and he picks up a wave of speed and slams into the back wall… well he is mic'ed up and he lets out a MF'er GD… in a second thousands of dollars, hundreds of hours, 20K mailers… everything wasted… because the only thing people remembered was the first few seconds…   Ecc. 10:1 Dead flies make the perfumer's ointment give off a stench; so a little folly outweighs wisdom and honor. So in Solomons day when they wanted perfume they didn't just go buy their favorite smell of the day… you had to make it and it sometimes took months to do so. So after all that prep you have it made… and then comes along some dead flies… just a few and it ruined everything you worked so hard on.    Pick a great name to work on. Choose wisely and pray God protects you from YOU!

In early 1982, Van Halen was finishing up a tour of the US that included opening for The Rolling Stones for some stadium shows.  After 5 straight years of touring and 4 consecutive platinum records, the members of Van Halen were looking forward to a much deserved vacation.  But to make sure folks didn't forget about them, they released a cover of the Roy Orbison classic Oh, Pretty Woman.  The song raced up the charts and then Warner Brothers demanded an album to go with the hit single.  So Eddie Van Halen, Michael Anthony, David Lee Roth and Alex Van Halen took 12 days to record the rest of what would be Diver Down.Though the album is maligned by critics and fans as being short (31 minutes) and chock full of covers (5) it was a huge success for the band selling over 4 million copies in the US and setting them up for their megahit 1984.  You still get some guitar heroics on songs like Hang Em High, Cathedral and The Full Bug but they also throw in some funny ones like Big Bad Bill and Happy Trails.  It may not be anyone's favorite Van Halen record but it's an important piece of their catalog that is 40 years old  and we had fun revisiting it.Ugly American Werewolf in London WebsiteTwitterInstagramYouTubeLInkTreewww.pantheonpodcasts.com

What the Riff?!?

We've covered a number of underrated bands and albums, but perhaps the most underrated band of the 80's is 38 Special.  Formed in Jacksonville, Florida in 1974 by Donnie Van Zandt and Don Barnes, 38 Special had a string of hits in the late 70's through the 80's including "Hold On Loosely,"  "Rockin' Into the Night," and "If I'd Been the One."  Special Forces is their fifth and most successful studio album, hitting number 10 on the Billboard 200.In addition to Van Zandt and Barnes, 38 Special's lineup for this album included Jeff Carlisi on guitar, Larry Junstrom on bass, Steve Brookins on drums, and Jack Grondin on drums.  A number of songs on this album were co-written by Jim Peterik, singer-songwriter and founder of the group Survivor.  Given the connection to Lynyrd Skynyrd (Donnie was the brother of original Skynyrd lead singer, Ronnie Van Zandt, and Junstrom was one of the founding members of Lynyrd Skynyrd), it is not surprising that their sound has its roots in Southern Rock.  However, 38 Special tended towards a more mainstream hard rock sound. The name of the group comes from an incident where the police were called on the band during a late night practice session.  The door was padlocked, and the police broke the lock by shooting it out ... with a 38 Special. Caught Up In YouThis is the first single and the big hit from the album, reaching number 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number 1 on the Mainstream Rock charts.  Don Barnes sings lead on this track.  The lyrics are self-explanatory, extolling a girl with whom the singer is completely entranced. You Keep Runnin' AwayBarnes has the lead duties from this song again.  The lyrics describe a girl who has been burned in past relationships and has decided never to trust another man.  The singer encourages her to not give up, that "someday, someway, somewhere love is gonna find you."Back Door Stranger A deeper cut from the album, the lyrics describe a serial rapist sneaking around, and what will happen to him if the singer catches up with him.  "Take my chances, rather go to jail than see the eyes of a coward runnin' loose and well."  The guitar has a great wah-wah sound, and Donnie Van Zandt takes his turn on lead vocals for this track.Chain Lightnin' The thunder sound is striking as both the intro and the outro for this iconic song.  There's a little bit of a Pink Floyd echo to add to the mystery.  "And it's hotter than hell in the heavens tonight."  "And it's so tough when the satisfaction is greater than the risk."ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Ain't Got No Home by Clarence “Frogman” Henry (from the motion picture “Diner”)This novelty song was featured in the comedy-drama starring Steve Guttenberg and Kevin Bacon. STAFF PICKS:Big Bad Bill (Is Sweet William Now) by Van Halen Bruce begins the staff picks with a deeper cut off the Diver Down album.  This cover was originally recorded in 1924, and came to the band's attention when David Lee Roth recorded it off a late night AM radio station.  Jan Van Halen, Eddie and Alex's father, is featured in this song playing clarinet.Did It in a Minute by Hall & Oates  Brian features a hit off the "Private Eyes" album from duo Darryl Hall and John Oates.  It was the third single from the album.  The upbeat song is about finding love almost instantaneously.  Hall wrote this with his girlfriend Sara Allen and her sister Janna, who came up with the chorus.Find Another Fool  by QuarterflashWayne gets a second chance to feature Portland's own Quarterflash.  This rocking minor-key song peaked at number 16 on the charts, and is a break-up song after the girl has had it with her ex-boyfriend's cheating ways.  The name comes from an Australian slang phrase, "a quarter flash, three parts foolish."  Quarterflash is the husband and wife team of Rindy and Marv RossMore Than This by Roxy MusicRob's staff pick is the first single off Roxy Music's last album, "Avalon."  Bryan Ferry began writing the songs for Avalon while on the west coast of Ireland, and the music reflects the melancholy feel of the location.  The song has an unusually long synth-driven outro. COMEDY TRACK:Piss On the Wall by the J. Geils BandSometimes you just must be going.  However, we do recommend that you find a toilet first!
