On this special episode of Marvel Movie Talk, Christian Bladt and Eric Conner are joined in the studios of Afterbuzz TV by actor Joseph Culp, who is the first actor to portray Dr. Doom in a live action film, 1994's Fantastic Four, produced by Roger Corman. Joseph discuses being cast for the role, the production and all the behind the scenes drama as to why the film has never been officially released, but has been widely available for decades first as bootleg VHS and DVDs and now all over the internet. Joseph explains his efforts to get an official release of the film and a petition that's been going around. HUGE thanks to Keven Undergaro, Maria Menounos and everyone at Afterbuzz TV for hosting us and helping to produce the interview! This documentary is a MUST WATCH! If you're at all curious about that unreleased film, then you can check this out on Amazon Prime (for free with ads). Doomed! really highlighted the way the people who were actually making this film thought vs what the powers-that-be knew. No real tracklist this week. We just had a discussion about the documentary itself and the information we learned. We highly recommend watching if you're a Marvel fan. You can follow us on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram or if you would like to support us you can donate to our KoFi.
Dragon on The Couch: The Dragon watched Thriller: A Cruel Picture (Buy a Blu-ray), a rape revenge film which she thought was a lot of fun. Next she watched Out There Halloween Mega Tape (Theatre), she liked it and how well it did at bringing a 90's atmosphere. Next, she watched the 2009 Avatar (Rent/Theatres). She thought the film is long and the story and dialogue are generic, but visually on the big screen it is astounding. Finally, she watched Popcorn (Shudder), an early 90's slasher which she thought was fun. Berto on the Bed: Berto watched Blonde (Netflix), he thought it was way too long but was an ok artistic film. Next, he watched Pineapple Express (Netflix), he loved it and thought it was still hilarious. Berto then watched This Is The End (Netflix), and thought it was great and a fun watch. Next, he watched Facing Nolan (Netflix), and thought it was a good documentary for people who enjoy baseball. Berto watched The Haunted Mansion (Disney+). He thought it was a perfectly fine film for kids, but was very rote and basic for adults. Next he watched An American Werewolf In Paris (Tubi), he thought it was an embarrassing sequel that was really bad. Next, Berto watched Doomed: The Untold Story of Roger Corman's The Fantastic Four (Tubi), an ok documentary about the 90's superhero film that was never released. Berto watched The Atoning (Prime), a slow, bad, cheap horror film with a very predictable twist. Finally, Berto watched Tonight She Comes (Tubi), a cheap bad horror film that was way too long. Dragon at the Movies: This week's deep dive is the 2015 horror film The Witch, currently streaming on HBO Max.

When Mark Doering-Powell, ASC was hired as the DP of Freeform's grown-ish after season one, he knew the show had to expand the storylines of each character's college experience. He was excited to take more of an anthology approach to some of the episodes, and get creative shooting each chapter with multiple looks. A single camera half-hour comedy such as grown-ish takes about four days to shoot, creating an extremely tight schedule between prepping and shooting. Mark thinks it's imperative to be in touch with post and the dailies colorist at the end of each day, so everyone can stay on top of the workload. On a rapid schedule it can be challenging to make the show look cinematic, but finding each character's point of view helps consolidate the work and keeps each shot economical. Mark favors using “swingles” on grown-ish, where the camera swings back and forth between characters on single shots, saving setup times. With a focus on each college-age character's personal life and position on social issues as they navigate their early 20's, the lighting on grown-ish is intended to make the cast look their best, and sometimes Mark employs classic Hollywood portrait lighting techniques using crisp, controllable hard light. Mark also likes to splash hard light onto the set, letting it naturally bounce off of something that is already in the room. He's learned to focus on lighting the people and then the space- lighting the space can aid lighting the people. Mark went to art school in New York, studying painting and graphic design until he found the film department and changed his major to film. He then worked as a Photo-sonics technician, which is a special high speed camera for shooting slow motion, on several commercials in the 1980's and 90's. But Mark wanted to focus more on filmmaking, so he quit, moved out to L.A. and started working for Roger Corman's studio in Venice, including camera assisting on Corman's famously unreleased 1994 version of The Fantastic Four. A documentary about the production called Doomed: The Untold Story of Roger Corman's The Fantastic Four was made in 2015. This is Rebel Scum Radio's audio commentary of one of the worst (and in a way one of the best) super hero movies of all time - Roger Corman's 1994 The Fantastic Four. Simply start watching the movie from one of the YouTube link below at the conclusion of the intro music and adjust sync as required. www.youtube.com/watch?v=28EyQ4a3OEA Unreleased to the public and now a cult classic it is up there with our favourite 1970s Hong Kong Spiderman movies and 1988's Incredible Hulk Returns. Why was this film made is outlined in the fils rotten tomatoes description as follows: "The story of the film goes back to the late '80s when Marvel Comics were licensing out their characters for mild profit in a time when the comic industry was failing. Enter a German company called Neue Constantin and producer Bernd Eichinger, who held the rights for almost four years before their contract was about to run out. In order to retain the rights to future remake/options and get out of paying a five-million-dollar fee, Neue were forced to put something to film, so they made a deal with Roger Corman's New Horizons studio to make the film quick and on the cheap for $1.5 million. Once the film was finished, Eichinger bought out Corman's interest, then turned around and sold it to 20th Century Fox, who were then prepping a $50 million adaptation with director Chris Columbus. The film then dove into virtual obscurity, save for the comic convention bootlegs and later through the internet. The storyline follows the basic framework of the comic, with the exception of a few minor details, including the introduction of a new villain, The Jeweler, who directly becomes responsible for the team's mishap in space and takes liberally from another one of the comic's famous villains, The Mole Man. In reference to its underground popularity, Corman now regards it as his most profitable film that never saw release, while Marvel president Avi Arad reportedly burned Fox's only print." Source: www.rottentomatoes.com/m/10005582_fantastic_four? There was also a documentary made about the film in 2015 titled "Doomed: The Untold Story of Roger Corman's the Fantastic Four" Details can be found here: doomedthemovie.com/

VHS Rewind! Season 2 Episode 11
VHS Rewind! Season 2 - Episode 11 VHS Rewind is preparing to tackle the legendary THE FANTASTIC FOUR movie from 1994 (you know, the one without Jessica Alba; the one produced by Roger Corman; the one that hasn't been officially released). THE FANTASTIC FOUR was subject to much behind the scenes shenanigans and has an extremely interesting production story (perhaps more interesting than the film itself). This is all examined in the upcoming documentary DOOMED! THE UNTOLD STORY OF ROGER CORMAN'S THE FANTASTIC FOUR. VHS Rewind sat down with the documentary's director Marty Langford to discuss THE FANTASTIC FOUR and this passion project documentary. We hope our discussion sparks your interest in this upcoming documentary as well as in our upcoming review of Corman's THE FANTASTIC FOUR. Frankly, some of us here at VHS Rewind enjoy Corman's film much more than the one with Jessica Alba in it.
