Gus Clemens on Wine explores and explains the world of wine in simple, humorous, fun posts
This is the weekly columnIn our investigation of wine descriptors, we continue our plunge into wine's weird words.• Petrol/diesel: Associated with riesling. Aroma is not the smell you get filling your farm truck, but does suggest diesel or gasoline. It is caused by good-thing antioxidant TDN (1,1,6-trimethyl-1,2-dihydronaphthalene if you are a chemist geek), which forms from beta carotene and lutein as riesling ages. It is a distinctive, distinguishing marker for those identifying riesling in blind tastings. It also blows away after exposure to air.• Burnt rubber: Associated with syrah, also with South African wines. South Africans took umbrage when an English critic used the descriptor. “We prefer that people use the term acrid rather than burnt rubber,” averred a spokesperson for Wines of South Africa. Current descriptor preferred by wineries for this nose note: “sun-dried tomatoes.”• Tar: Associated with nebbiolo (Barolo/Barbaresco) and syrah—means aromas and flavors reminiscent of tar. Who eats or smells tar to find out? Some claim it describes a mix of meat and black pepper. Remember, smell is at least 75% of taste, so the “taste” of tar really is a slight—and slight is key—aroma of tar.• Pencil shavings: Associated with cabernet sauvignon and petit verdot: hints of cedar or eucalyptus wood. Cigar box also associated with this nose nuance. Think of sharpening the #2 in the third grade. It is a mineral smokiness similar to graphite. Engendered either from tannins in the wine or the wine's exposure to oak during the winemaking process, to put a fine point on it.Tasting notes• Benziger Family Winery Chardonnay 2022: Sonoma chard—lively acidity frames citrus, apple, and stone fruit. $14-16 Link to my review• Monteabellón Tempranillo 5 Meses en Barrica, Ribera del Duero 2020: Easy-going tempranillo effort with refreshing acidity. $14-16 Link to my review• Domäne Wachau Riesling Federspiel Terrassen 2021: Excellent dry riesling from fabled Austrian wine producing area. Very focused with excellent acidity and complexity. $20-25 Link to my review• La Crema Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir 2021: Fresh, clean with attractive layers of quality fruit. Lighter version of California pinot noir style. $27 Link to my review• Masciarelli Marina Cvetić Montepulciano d'Abruzzo S. Martino Rosso Riserva DOC 2019: Good complexity. Nicely evolves in the glass presenting an engaging experience. $29-38 Link to my review• Trefethen Family Vineyards Estate Grown Cabernet Sauvignon, Oak Knoll District, Napa Valley 2021: Assertive Napa cab that combines some earthiness with elegance. $50-70 Link to my reviewLast roundMy son told my husband he got a part in his school play and he would be playing a man who has been happily married for 25 years. It's a well-known fact that the global suicide rate is alarming, with an average of over 700,000 people taking their own lives each year. What isn't remotely well-known, however, is that the suicide rate among males is three to four times higher than that among women. Richard V. Reeves, a senior fellow at the highly respected think tank Brookings Institution, where he directs the Future of the Middle-Class Initiative and co-directs the Center on Children and Families, has extensively researched this dark disparity between genders. Despite strong warnings not to, the father of three boys documented his findings in Of Boys and Men: Why the Modern Male Is Struggling, Why It Matters, and What to Do about It in 2022, a critical but bold undertaking in light of our social landscape which dismisses the plight of men by virtue of its (perceived) infinite inferiority to the history of injustices suffered by women. Reeves sets out the structural and social shifts over recent decades, which have effectively left a vacuum previously occupied by permitted and biologically informed masculinity – now tainted as toxic. In an interview with Reeves, the maligned issue of male malaise and the social, cultural and ideological reasons driving this are discussed – highlighting just how crucial addressing the crisis faced by boys and men is to the well-being and flourishing of BOTH genders. SWRGN champions engendered devolution policies in Zimbabwe
The relevant interrelating corollaries are not being addressed by our educating interests. We are almost totally unaware of the conceptual principles and as a consequence must endure what is seemingly randomly occurring. Our humanity is being programmed by unprovable false premises that nevertheless convince followers accordingly to the self-serving PRJWBC and PCJWBC authorities. (Politics Religion Justice War Belief Complex and Politics Communism Justice War Belief Complex)Those imposed beliefs perpetuate the gravest consequence one of which is fear engendering. Engendered fear to all experiential degree concerning survival settles in taking over our mentality and the land. It decreases our elective freedoms, indiscretely confusing what naturally is unity, which is plural and at minimum two. Anticipatory remedies, even irrationally contrived solutions dominate otherwise benign humanity as indirect or purposeful intentions as the illogical procedures supplant any hope of otherwise sustaining the most economic way of behaving relative to unity and self in Universe.Along such trains of irrational thought-language coordination vast movements as migration patterns and politically motivated self serving contribute to enormous numbers sweeping across the land enabled thus by the misguided ambitions. The misguided ambitions supplant logical thought-language coordination as the use of it by human intellect tends to adjust a priori thought to preconceived capitalization of the supplementary adaptations. We could otherwise adjust a priori thought to a total reality of universal principles and therefrom relevant interrelating corollaries. To make matters more confusing is the exploited educated ignorance which typically disregards awareness of the always-and-only coexisting complementarities. Not only are most of us ignorant concerning words like ‘complementary' which supposedly is synonymous with ‘inessential.' The imposed supplementaries emanating from the halls of congress or any hierarchical apex where the powerfully self-serving incentives are transacted literally and technically costs us more than the previous generations paid for freedom. Freedom comes at a cost the highest price of which expects human life to be paid for it. What in fact are the corollaries when humans of a mind, our evolution species admits all that is omni considerately designed by ‘the eternal omniscient mind?' Now that we have become aware of maligning God in the concourses of historical precedence, this question is most appropriate to ask. Furthermore, does the hall of congress suffice as essential to the inception and survival of a true democracy correlating to the corollaries? If so, then it is where logically consciousness evolution's conceptual reasoning metaphysical intellect initiates cogitations respecting Synergetic Principles.
In this episode of Mindfulness Monday, Ora Nadrich shares a discussion with Kate Lanz, coauthor (Paul Brown) of the revolutionary book; All The Brains In The Business - The Engendered Brain In The 21st Century Organisation. The two discuss the fascinating exploration of gender diversity in the brain (and workplace) and how to look deeper into the mind, and come into a new relationship with how the brain works. ABOUT: The power of gender difference, not gender equality, is a secret source for success. Some smart businesses are starting to wake up to this fact. This book explores why and how. Properly valuing brain gender diversity in the workplace is one of the biggest and largely untapped sources of competitive advantage for modern businesses. Recent advances in neuroscience provide the key to unlocking it. Modern research shows that there are gender-based differences in the brain – it's just not as simple as a binary between a ‘male brain' and ‘female brain'. In fact, our brains are like a mosaic where many of the tiles are available in thousands of shades on a spectrum between pink and blue. The problem is that our workplaces tend to be governed by structures, processes and cultures that are practically pure blue. All the brains in the business that are elsewhere on the spectrum cannot thrive as they might, so sources of productivity, creativity and agility go untapped. Anyone who manages people needs to understand how the brain works and the impact it has on how people work together as teams. Anyone who wants to unlock the talent and productivity of all of their people needs to understand how recent findings around male- and female-type brains should shape the way they manage. Leading applied neuroscientists and international corporate coaches Kate Lanz and Paul Brown show you why and how to access all the brains in your business. In this episode, Kimberlé chops it up with Dorothy Roberts, a professor at the University of Pennsylvania and a leading scholar in race, gender, bioethics, and the law. In a conversation that merges intersectional inquiry with The 1619 Project, which interrogates America’s history of slavery in order to understand racial disparities in 2019, Crenshaw and Roberts shed light on the lasting consequences of slavery, segregation, and White Supremacy, and their impact on Black women specifically. Their timely conversation highlights the relationship between the legacy of slavery and instances of modern oppression against Black women, such as the curbing of welfare, forced sterilization, and mass incarceration. In Scandinavia’s most ancient literature, there exists primordial giants whose actions - and very being - are identified with the origin and creation of the world. Engendered in the great chasm called Ginnungagap, where the frozen waters of the cold-realm Niflheim and the hot breath of the fire-realm Muspel met, the frost giant Ymir and a cow named Audumla were the first created beings. In this creation story, the combination of fire and ice made life possible: some mysterious life grew and thrived in the drops of melting water, which took the form of the giant Ymir. Called jätte (yett-uh) in Swedish, troll or jutul (yoo-tool) in Norwegian, trolls and giants are prominent in fables and in etiological legends explaining the origin of many huge rock formations, lakes and the so-called giants potholes. The Norwegian word ‘jutul’ stems from the Old Norse Jotunn, which denotes a race of giants in opposition to man and gods. From the pine-laden mountains and prosperous farms of the Vågå region in Norway to imperial Copenhagen, from the jagged-peaks and moss-laden cliffs of Iceland’s West-fjords to the immense vertical sea cliffs of the Faroe Islands, we will hear tales of earth-sculpting colossal beings.
