We were all standing up and cheering the Christchurch City Council three years ago, when it flipped the bird at the Government over housing intensification. Because there was no way we were going to agree to three, three-story houses being built on one section. But I've changed my thinking. Eventually, the city council kind-of pulled its head in. But it's still dragging the chain a bit and wants more time before agreeing to what the Government wants. But one city councillor, at least, thinks we should stop dragging the chain, that we should get with the programme and allow this intensification to happen. And I agree with him. I think he's making a very good point. Maybe it's because my stance on intensification has eased since 2022, when the council told the Government in no uncertain terms that it wasn't interested in having three, three-story houses on one section. And I think Christchurch city councillor Andrei Moore is making a very good argument in favour of greater housing density. Saying that, if we don't let it happen, more and more houses will be built in places like Rolleston and Prebbleton. Which are not in Christchurch, they're in the Selwyn District, and that will mean more and more people travelling into the city every day, using Christchurch's roading infrastructure and not paying a bean towards it. Because they don't live in Christchurch city - they live in Selwyn. And he's saying we should stop kicking the can down the road and just get on with it. Instead of spending another year resisting it, we need to accept that greater housing density is here whether we like it or not. He says: “It's high time we wake up and deal with the reality of city growth.” And I couldn't agree more. And yes, that does mean that my stance on intensification has changed, and there's nothing wrong with that. The plan originally was to let developments with three, three-storey properties to be built on one section pretty much anywhere. But it was modified a bit. Modified to restrict this level of intensification to the central city, around shopping centres and what's described as "walkable distances" from core public transport routes. Which is still pretty carte blanche when you think about shopping malls and areas on core public transport routes. As far as shopping malls go, we've got the likes of the Hub Hornby, Riccarton Mall, Bush Inn, the Tannery, Barrington Mall, Tower Junction, Eastgate Mall, Merivale Mall, Northlands Mall, Fendalton Mall, the Palms, Homebase, and the Colombo. Which means intensification getting the green light in Hornby, Riccarton, Opawa, Barrington, Linwood, Merivale all the way up to Northlands, Fendalton, Shirley, Sydenham and Beckenham. And, if that's how it has to be, then I'm with Andrei Moore and I agree with him that we need to bite the bullet and get on with it. Because A: we've got a housing affordability problem in this country, and the quarter-acre section is a thing of the past. So, if you want your kids to be able to afford to buy their own place, it's not going to be somewhere with a big backyard. So we need more apartments and townhouses - the places you get with greater housing density. And B: population growth is real. The numbers aren't massive, but they're real and expected to continue in the upwards direction. The city's population is around 396,000. Last year it was 1.2% up on the year before. Over the last five years, population growth in Christchurch has averaged 1.3% annually. Before the quakes, it was declining. There was an especially large jump in 2023, when the population in Christchurch city increased by 2.7%. And city councillors pushing back on greater housing density in Christchurch are ignoring the obvious. That, yes, backyards are great. Yes, Christchurch is supposed to be the garden city. And yes, the people against intensification are most likely to be the people who can be bothered to vote. But, if they put all that aside, they'd see that their colleague Andrei Moore is being realistic. And I agree with him that it's time for Christchurch to stop pushing back on greater housing intensification. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Northlands Primary School is taking STEM education to new heights with its LEGO League programme. The programme was designed to ignite creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills. LEGO League, initially introduced as extracurricular, integrates seamlessly with Northlands' academic curriculum, reinforcing STEM concepts in an engaging and practical way. Students from Grades 4 to 7, chosen for their interest in robotics and problem-solving, work under the guidance of a dedicated Coding and Robotics team. They build and program LEGO robots, tackling complex challenges that push their ingenuity to the limit. Parents have embraced the initiative, participating in events, fundraising, and cheering the teams on. Northlands' two teams, Smooth Sailors and Lego Legends have qualified for the national LEGO League competition in December, hosted at Johannesburg's Sci-Bono Discovery Centre. This marks their second consecutive appearance. Lead Robotics Instructor Mr Kent boasted about the students, saying: “I am continually inspired by the ingenuity, collaboration, and confidence they show, and I look forward to seeing how these skills benefit them far beyond the walls of Northlands Primary. The national competition is a wonderful opportunity for them to showcase their growth, and I am honoured to be part of their journey." Principal, Mr Naidu, shared: “Watching our students excel at a national level reaffirms our commitment to developing well-rounded individuals who are prepared for the world of tomorrow."

In this seventh part of a twelve-part series on mortalkind, we take a look at the Nordicans, the humans who live in the Northlands.
She's been a tough few months for Northland businesses and residents. First, we had the Brynderwyns closing. State Highway 1 over the Brynderwyn Hills is finally set to open ahead of Matariki weekend after 17 weeks and three days. Lots of diversions, lots and lots of trucks on roads that where they really, really shouldn't be, and the crews have been working as hard as they can, but it's been slip after slip after slip. They've been trying to clear those and strengthen the road and shore up the hills. And then yesterday, we had the massive power outage. Nearly 100,000 people spent the day without electricity in Northland after a transmission tower linking the region to the rest of the country fell over. And like, quite literally, fell over - collapsed. Power was restored to most of the region last night, but consumers were asked to conserve electricity and warned that their hot water cylinders would remain off while the amount of energy getting into the area was limited. Transpower said this morning that while power has now been restored to the majority of residential customers, full power would not be restored until over the weekend. Having a place in the Hokianga I'm used to power outages occurring, you know relatively often, but they're usually sporadic, they're usually easily resolved. It's a bit of fun camping until the power comes back on, not so much fun when you're a business that is utterly dependent on power. The transmission tower collapse, which happened in Glorit, about 45kms west of Warkworth, happened at the same time as another circuit connecting Northland to the grid was down for maintenance. So basically, the whole region was completely and utterly on its own. Northland MP Grant McCullum said this highlights how fragile the infrastructure in Northland is and he said it was the very last thing that Northlanders needed, which was a sentiment echoed by Darren Fischer, North Chamber CEO, Chamber of Commerce. “Spoke to some of our more regional business associations yesterday and how they described it is, this not the knockout blow for a lot of small businesses, it's certainly a standing 8 count. You know it could be very well one of the things that just keep piling on top of some of these small employers you know.” Yeah, it's tough. Thank heavens the Brynderwyns road will be open, thanks to NZTA, for Matariki weekend to give the businesses a much-needed boost. But is it just the nature of the beast? Is it the nature of nature, if you will? There's not much you can do when there are massive landslips, or is there? Should there have been more investment in shoring up the sides of the hills and strengthening the roads before you absolutely had to? Have we been putting infrastructure on the back burner right around the country, but for far, far too long? Putting it off where we can, generation after generation. This is not on one government; this isn't even really on one generation. Have we been taking infrastructure for granted? And now we're seeing the result of that. I mean Northlands suffering at the moment, but there'll be other regions of that you can be sure. When you are utterly dependent really on one road, one major highway in and out for the transportation of goods and the transportation of services, when there are any frailties or when nature decides that it's going to have its say, there's not much you can do. You have to cobble together detours and patch in highways. When you are utterly dependent on one or two sources of power when one goes, you're stuffed. Are we too small to be able to have even a 98% confident reliance on our infrastructure? Are we simply too small? Our population mass is too small. We certainly don't have the money right now, but then what were we doing in the previous years? Or is it just Northland that is the forgotten child? The one who's been left behind while the rest of the country has agitated for more power, more resources, more money. I think there'd be plenty of regions that would argue they've been forgotten, so I don't think that's the answer. Northlanders might feel a bit bereft having been promised bridges that didn't turn up. Having been left pretty much isolated from the rest of the country with the Brynderwyns closed. Is it just the nature of New Zealand's terrain, or has it been poor decision making from those who should know better? See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Jamband alert for this week's episode with Jen Meyerhardt!! Jen is co-owner and co-producer of Northlands Music and Arts Festival taking place June 14-15 in Swanzey, NH and talked to me about her impressive history in the legal jungle and how that prepared her for the live events production world.A native of New Canaan, CT, with a law degree and years of experience in Silicon Valley, Jen is also a long-time jamband fan and lover of live music, who now brings her impressive life experiences and go-getter attitude to even greater heights. We talked what it means to truly lean into her lifelong passion for live music to bring some of the industry's premier jam bands to play a humble New Hampshire hamlet year after year. It's an inspiring story of following one's dream, listening to the music play, and heeding the call to see where it all may take you. Remember how much we loved the Christchurch City Council flipping the bird at the Government last year over housing intensification? It all started when the Government and the National Party joined forces to try and sort out the housing supply issues and came up with their one-size-fits-all idea of squeezing more people onto every block of land. And so they went to the Christchurch council - and every other council - and said ‘you have to start letting people build three, three-storey properties on one site'. And to its credit, before the local body elections last year, the Christchurch council told the Government and the National Party where to go, and said it wouldn't be implementing these new housing density rules. So there was a bit of a stand-off - with Wellington telling the council to give the go-ahead for people to build three, three-storey properties on a single section; and Christchurch saying ‘you can forget that idea, because we don't have the same need for intensification and we need to be treated as a special case because of it'. Of course, the Government didn't take no for an answer and brought in the “mediator” to work through the issues. That was back in November and you may remember at the time I thought the mediator would be more of an “enforcer”. And the enforcer seems to have lived up to that title because today we've got the council crowing about coming up with an alternative plan which councillors will consider and vote on in a few weeks. The guts of the new alternative plan is housing intensification being restricted to the central city, shopping centres and what's being called "walkable distances" from core public transport routes. The council is yet to determine what a walkable distance from core public transport actually is or what it means. But with shopping centres all over the city, is this really a scaling back or is it intensification in sheep's clothing? Because if they're saying they want to allow intensification to happen in the central city, around shopping malls, and in areas on core public transport routes - then that's pretty much everywhere, isn't it? I don't think there'd be too much noise about the central city - because post-earthquakes, especially, we've become accustomed to apartments and the like popping up in the centre of town. But when you consider the shopping mall part of it - this is where this fantastic alternative starts to unravel, as far as I'm concerned. And just tells me that the “enforcer” has got his way and the council is just trying to get itself out of a corner. And as far as shopping malls in Christchurch go, I can think of The Hub Hornby, Riccarton Mall, Bush Inn, The Tannery, Barrington Mall, Tower Junction, Eastgate Mall, Merivale Mall, Northlands Mall, Fendalton Mall, The Palms, Homebase and The Colombo. Under this so-called brilliant alternative plan city council staff have come up with, intensification would get the green light in Hornby, Riccarton, Opawa, Barrington, Linwood, Merivale all the way up to Northlands, Fendalton, Shirley, Sydenham and Beckenham. If you live in those areas, how would you feel about three, three-storey properties on the section next door? You'd be delighted, I'm sure. Intensification would also get the green light in areas within walkable distance of core public transport routes which, just like the shopping malls, are pretty much anywhere and everywhere in Christchurch. Which is why I'm thinking that the Government's enforcer has got his way, the Christchurch City Council has given up, and has come up with a so-called alternative plan that is nothing short of intensification in sheep's clothing.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Our Vancouver Canucks insider, Rick Dhaliwal, joined for his regular Friday hit. Talked about Northlands and what a tough hole 18 is. Talked about Scott Walker not coming back. Talked about the process of hiring assistant coaches. It’ll be late July before Bruce and co. know what this team looks like. It’ll be a bit later than years past. Talked about the prospect pool for the Canucks. Thinks they will try really hard to get a 2nd rounder. You can’t go into drafts without a 1st or 2nd rounder, with 32 teams, that’s not feasible.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

It was really interesting listening this morning to the lawyer who has written to the Prime Minister asking her to scrap the vaccine passes by today. And, if she doesn't, he's going to go to the High Court to try and make it happen. Matthew Hague is his name. He's the lawyer who went to court challenging the legality of the vaccine mandates for Defence and Police. A week ago, the judge who heard the case ruled in his favour. So he's on a bit of a roll and, today, it's the vaccine pass that's in his sights. And I tell you what, if he does end up going to court over this - and I'm picking that's what will happen - and if I was the judge considering the case, then based on what I heard this morning, I'd rule in his favour. I'd support his case for doing away with the vaccine passes. I know a radio interview is nowhere near as detailed as a legal submission, but the gist of his argument is that the purpose of the vaccine pass system is to prevent the spread and transmission of Covid. But, the vaccine itself has been found to be less effective against the transmission of Omicron. It still reduces the severity of symptoms, but it doesn't stop you getting it. So he's saying that if the vaccine doesn't stop you getting Omicron, then there is no need or justification for the vaccine pass - which only exists to try and stop the spread and transmission of Covid. And he's bang on there, isn't he? Not to mention the fact that most of us who are eligible to be vaccinated, are vaccinated. Another thing, which he didn't mention when he was on with Mike Hosking this morning, is the truckloads of vaccinated people - myself included - who are more than happy to go to places like the shopping malls (Riccarton, Northlands, Hornby, Eastgate…you name them); we're more than happy to go there even though it means being in the same place as unvaccinated people. So if we're happy to go to the mall without a vaccine pass to get in, that means we're happy to go anywhere without a vaccine pass, doesn't it? You may have heard me say the other day that I'd been into a real estate office to pick up a key for someone, and when I walked in they wanted to see my vaccine pass. It took me by surprise to be honest and I just put it down to being another case of people interpreting the rules in their own way. Because it's become a sea of inconsistency out there with the vaccine passes, hasn't it? So if I take the legal argument that vaccine passes only exist to prevent the spread of Covid, but the vaccine itself doesn't stop us getting Omicron, then I'm convinced and I think the vaccine pass has done its thing and it's time to move on.
