This is the audio version of our breakdown of Mickey 17, where things get cloned, chaotic, and comical. For the full visual experience, catch the video on YouTube. In this episode of the TruVue Podcast, we go deep into Bong Joon Ho's sci-fi mind trip Mickey 17, where being disposable is just part of the job. Starring Robert Pattinson as Mickey Barnes, an “Expendable” in a colonization mission to the icy planet Niflheim, this clone gets brought back to life every time he dies. But what happens when the new version meets the old? Spoiler alert: it's a corporate Kinko's nightmare with identity issues. We break down what it means to be duplicated, discarded, and still expected to perform. From clone ethics to class systems in space, we ask all the wrong questions and make all the right jokes. This ain't just sci-fi—it's about the workplace hustle on intergalactic steroids.

A wet fart from famed director Bong Joon Ho? Luke & Corrye lean "yes." Though Robert Pattinson sparkles as the titular character, much of this novel-based film didn't quite land for the Chumps. Luke explains his small beef with author Edward Ashton (a personal experience!) while Corrye batters the film with a variety of frustrations. PLUS: an ode to Gene Hackman, one of our favorite thespians.

Min 47.

In the year 985 C.E., a group of Viking settlers led by Erik the Red settled on the frozen tundra of Greenland. Against all odds, they thrived there for almost 500 years. Then, they disappeared without a trace and without warning. Did they starve after the onset of the Little Ice Age? Were they wiped out by their neighbors to the North, the Thule Inuit? Did they cut off all communication, move deep into a frozen fjord, and continue to live out their lives there like a Norse version of "The Village"? Or, did they venture too far North, finding themselves lost in the realm of Niflheim? While there, did they stumble across the bubbling and roaring whirlpool Hvergelmir, and get sucked down into Hel? This is the story of the disappearance of the Norse Greenlanders, a mystery on par with the lost colony of Roanoke, and how one of the world's most famous cartographers and geographers might have proven that Norse mythology is real. _________________________________________ Episode Written and Produced by Tyler Liston Music used with full permissions and licenses from Artlist.io _________________________________________ Want to be a part of a future bonus episode of The Timber? Spud and PC return for some springtime musings on the Norse land of ice. Stories this week feature a Hunter-S-Thompsony encounter with a box; memories of a college trip; the opposite of seasonal affective disorder; and a few nuclear apocalypses. From The Standard Dictionary of Folklore, Mythology, and Legend, 1949 ed. Niffheim In Teutonic mythology, the region of eternal cold, mist, and darkness, north of Midgard across the river Gjol. Into this region Odin banished Hel to rule over the “nine unlighted worlds” of the dead. Here Hel presided, with her dark red bird and her rake. Here was the inexhaustible, seething spring called Hvergelmir inhabited by the dragon Nidhug; here was the deepest root of Yggdrasil; here lived Uller, god of winter, during the summer months; and from edge to edge of Niflheim arched the Bifrost bridge. Niflheim and Nifihel are sometimes synonymous; but Niflhel is more often synonymous with Hel, as a subterranean region entered through the Gnipa cave, and later regarded as a place of punishment, where the dead undergo a second death. Stories begin around the 11 minute mark.Check out our website for a featured story from this week's episode, and be sure to follow us on Instagram (if that's your sort of thing). Edward Ashton, the author of Mickey7, walked into a rabbit hole of questions from us as we dissected the book. Ashton discusses how he came up with the idea, the scientific details behind many underlying layers in the novel, and why being "expendable" is necessary as it preserves more valuable people on the planet yet comes with great sacrifice. In addition to going into details about the new planet, Niflheim, the colonization process, and creepers -- Ashton spends the time going over the intricacies that made it a must-read (can not put it down) book.

Minute Seventy-Five: From Thor's Motivation to Thor's Art Joining us to discuss the handing over of the journal and Thor's art attempt at drawing Yggdrasil is Bubbawheat from the Flights, Tights and Movie Nights podcast. In the seventy-fifth minute of Kenneth Branagh's 2011 film Thor... We really focus on Jane here as she and Thor talk. He's such a cheerleader for her, and we totally believe it. She's really at her lowest here, so it's amazing to see how he turns her around. This is where the whole science/magic conversation happens. It's interesting because magic still seems to exist on Asgard. Perhaps, they know what Midgardians view as magic is actually science, but on Asgard, there is still something magical, even beyond that? Or perhaps Loki's magic is some form of hacking he does with their advanced science? Why does Jane have what ends up being Thor's Yggdrasil in her journal? It doesn't look like our solar system. What was she working on? And how does Yggdrasil work? Are we meant to believe it's a metaphor? Or some weird space thing? How do the Nine Realms work? We spend some time going through all nine of the Realms and trying to figure out exactly how it works, as compared to how they work in Norse myth versus the comics. We also discuss a few other areas that are sometimes incorporated into the Realms. Why are the Frost Giants from Jotunheim when it sounds like Niflheim – a planet of primordial ice – would be more natural for them? Again, Andy is really not impressed by Thor's art efforts here. How does Thor know about the Hubble Telescope? Bubbawheat brings some great research about Icelandic and Norse accents and how they'd actually be pronounced. They're very interesting. We go into pronunciation because of how Thor says ‘Hubble Telescope.' Is it just a fish out of water joke? Or is there some other joke with language? It wasn't scripted, so perhaps it's a joke they came up on set. Maybe it's how Australians say it. (Just kidding.) We dig into the Hubble Telescope a bit as far as it's history, and point out where you can look online to see images from the Hubble Telescope. It's been a week of romance by the fire, and now Thor's drawing some funky tree. It's our last chat with Bubbawheat. Tune in! Episode Notes We discuss Susana Imaginário debut novel Wyrd Gods. It is a fantasy epic that mixes Norse and Greek myths. Sex, violence and intrigue a plenty! Thanks to Susana for the review copy. Here is the blurb: The God of Time wants to destroy Eternity. A mysterious immortal seeks vengeance. And a reclusive deity does what no god should ever do: she answers a prayer. As punishment, she is stripped of her powers and trapped in a mortal's body. Now a Wyrd – a fated god – she is haunted by the memories and thoughts of her host and must hide her true identity in order to survive in Niflheim, the rival Norse Underworld. There she discovers the afterlife is not quite what it used to be. Niflheim's new ruler threatens the precarious balance of a world overrun with outcast deities and mortals alike. To save her own sanity and find her way back to the stars, she must help the other Wyrd overcome their grievances to defeat this enemy, but those who would be her allies appear to have motives as hidden as her fragmented consciousness. And yet it seems the greatest threat to her freedom comes from within, and the prize it seeks is her immortal soul... We're heading to Greenland on a ship helmed by an ale-sotted captain named Thor! East by Edith Pattou is a gorgeous retelling of Norwegian fairy tale East of the Sun and West of the Moon. At turns poetic and action-packed, both gentle and bracing, this is a lovely book about finding joy in all the little particulars of living out daily life, wrapped in a sweeping fairy tale. Our protagonist Rose seeks the mysterious white bear (who is most definitely not just a bear) whom she spent a year living with in a stone castle - until the troll queen showed up. Her journey takes her across freezing lands and near-impassible bridges, through weeks-long blizzards and ice forests, into Niflheim itself. (Bachelorette Spoiler: 34:09-38:15)

Emerging from Austrian Alpine folklore is a half-goat, half-man demon. He carries a wicker basket or burlap sack and can be heard lurking in the shadows by the tell-tale jingle of copper chains and shackles that adorn his waist and arms. His long, thick fur - brown and black - cascading down from his head to his ankles limns his muscles, corded and taught from years and years of hard labor in the depths of hades. Giant, spiraling horns breach his skull and careen upward, a fiendish stretch toward the heavens. He walks on great, cloven hooves that click and clack as he stalks his victims, striking fear in the hearts of all who hear. Claws born of fire and sharpened by hate - made for rending flesh - clasp leather whip and birch rod. These for penance and pain. A serpent’s tongue, long and pointed, flicks about tasting the panic and dread of his prey. And eyes so black, the black of his soul, peer to and fro, ever searching… ever seeking those that he might punish.According to legend, Krampus is the son of Hel… HEL… not HELL. Hel is the daughter of the trickster god, Loki, and the Norse goddess of Niflheim - the underworld. These Norse gods were revered and worshipped in pagan Norse religions for centuries. Krampus was not known as he is today during this time. Instead, he would often manifest as a Yule Goat, a pagan Norse figure traditionally associated with the Winter Solstice. It wasn’t until somewhere in the 15th or 16th century when Christianity began to gain popularity in Europe and beyond - Post-Inquisition, The Crusades and Criticism of Corruption that Germany and Austria’s YuleTide celebrations started to become less and less about Yuletide and the Yule Goat and became more focused on Christmas and a much cheerier YuleTide character, Saint Nicholas. Saint Nicholas of Myra, yes a real-life person, was sainted in 800 AD and is known as Nicholas the Wonderworker due to his generosity and legendary habit of secretly giving gifts. In this episode we discuss the creation and the nine realms. "Before the dawn of time and before the world was created in Norse mythology there was only a big dark vast emptiness called Ginnungagap. From this, two realms came into existence, Niflheim, and Muspelheim. In the north Niflheim formed, it became such a dark and cold place that there was nothing else than ice, frost, and fog. To the south of Ginnungagap, the realm of Muspelheim formed, this became the land of fire, and it became so hot that it would only consist of fire, lava, and smoke. This is the place where the fire giant Surtr lives along with other fire demons and fire giants." --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

We're going back to Asgard, Niflheim, and all the realms in between with more Norse myths! Stories with dangerous deals, magical blood-honey, and an evil family with a TERRIBLE reputation. Please excuse Michael's joke to start things off but he was just so proud of it.
In Scandinavia’s most ancient literature, there exists primordial giants whose actions - and very being - are identified with the origin and creation of the world. Engendered in the great chasm called Ginnungagap, where the frozen waters of the cold-realm Niflheim and the hot breath of the fire-realm Muspel met, the frost giant Ymir and a cow named Audumla were the first created beings. In this creation story, the combination of fire and ice made life possible: some mysterious life grew and thrived in the drops of melting water, which took the form of the giant Ymir. Called jätte (yett-uh) in Swedish, troll or jutul (yoo-tool) in Norwegian, trolls and giants are prominent in fables and in etiological legends explaining the origin of many huge rock formations, lakes and the so-called giants potholes. The Norwegian word ‘jutul’ stems from the Old Norse Jotunn, which denotes a race of giants in opposition to man and gods. From the pine-laden mountains and prosperous farms of the Vågå region in Norway to imperial Copenhagen, from the jagged-peaks and moss-laden cliffs of Iceland’s West-fjords to the immense vertical sea cliffs of the Faroe Islands, we will hear tales of earth-sculpting colossal beings.
Early in the morning of time, there was no sand, no grass, no lapping wave. There was no earth, no sun, no moon, no stars. There was Niflheim, a waste of frozen fog, and Muspelheim, a place of raging flames. And in between the fog and fire, there was a gaping pit - Ginungagap... Let's find out what emerged out of Gunungagap. Thanks for watching. Zehn Jahre arbeitete Entwickler Square Enix an «Final Fantasy 15» - wow! This time, we review the newest of the Final Fantasy XV films; Kingsglaive Final Fantasy XV. Kingsglaive: Final Fantasy XV Development History Kingsglaive: Final Fantasy XV is a 2016 computer animated fantasy anime film directed by Takeshi Nozue, written by Takashi Hasegawa, and produced by good ole Hajime Tabata. The film was developed by Visual Works, Square Enix’s CGI studio. The film is obviously connected to the Fabula Nova Crystallis subseries, and is meant to get everyone ready for Final Fantasy XV. Kingsglaive was created as part of the multimedia rollout of Final Fantasy XV. The film began production in 2014 by the same team that brought us Advent Children. Kingsglaive uses discarded stuff from the original story, while creating a separate experience and plot. Square Enix brought in multiple external studios into complete the project in time. Plot/Setting The story takes place on the world of Eos. This planet is divided into multiple nations that each once held magical crystals. Sound familiar?! The kingdom of Lucis is currently the only nation that still has a crystal. They use it to defend themselves via a gigantic magic barrier. The crystal holds special powers, ie magic, and is only accessible through the Ring of the Lucii, which is passed down from monarch to monarch. Recently, the militaristic empire of Niflheim has been conquering nearby nations, and is currently at war with Lucis. Lucis is protected by the Kingsglaive, an elite unit that uses the royal family’s magic powers. Kingsglaive starts out with King Regis accepting terms of peace from Niflheam. Regis must cede the territories around the crown city Insomnia to Niflheim, and marry prince Noctis to Lunafreya, the former princess of Tenebrae. Another place that we have no context of… lol. Final Fantasy XV Predictions III By Kaleb Schweiss As we all know, Square Enix has sprayed a shoopuff sized load of Final Fantasy XV content onto our eagerly awaiting faces. From a hyper CG film directed by Takeshi Nozue, the man who brought us Advent Children, to a new Final Fantasy XV Demo titled “Final Fantasy XV: Platinum Demo”. But first, let’s start off with Brotherhood: Final Fantasy XV. Kingsglaive: Final Fantasy XV. As all of us who watched Final Fantasy XV: Uncovered know, Sean Bean, Lena Headey, and Aaron Paul are behind three of the biggest voices of the film. The film will feature King Regis and his Kingsglaive, or Kingsguard…., as they fight off the evil empire of Niflheim, who is advancing ever deeper into the kingdom of Lucis. They are, naturally, after the crystal that is housed here. Regis is essentially forced to secede his lands outside the capital, and send his son to wed the uber hot Lunafreya, a princess of Tenebrae, and captive of the Niflheim. It essentially looks like a little more back story for FF XV, centered around King Regis, rather than Noctis. It is set to take place just after Noctis leaves to wet his whick on ole Lunafreya. Kingsglaive doesn’t have an official release date, but it will be available sometime before September 30th. Brotherhood: Final Fantasy XV is a five episode, completely original animated short. It delves further into the relationships between Noctis and his friends, and sets up the story for Final Fantasy XV. This will be a free to view series, and the first episode is up on YouTube. It is said that this series will follow Noctis from childhood on. Here’s the link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fsVhwsUFaDE Thoughts on episode 1 of brotherhood? Platinum Demo: Final Fantasy XV This demo is a free to download game that features a dream within child Noctis. The “storyline” explored will be unique to Platinum Demo, and players who complete the demo will receive the Carbuncle summon for the full game. The demo essentially showcases the battle system. It shows us young Noctis, with squeaky hammer in hand, as he figures out the important things in life, such as driving, and destroying his enemies… seeing them driven before him, and the lamentation of the women!!!!! Well, sort of. You also unlock magic in this demo, and get to play as adult Noctis to take on the formiddable Iron Giant at the end of the demo. Thoughts on Platinum Demo: Final Fantasy XV? Some final mentions -Still considering PC release -Airship car thing will be fully controllable, and obtained near end of 1game -Square may produce more Ultimate….Editions of FFXV, for the 99 percent of us who couldn’t get one. - FF XV will feature Justice Monsters Five, a pinball-style FF monster reference game. There will be various locations to play this game, so you shouldn’t have a hard time accessing the minigame. -There are over 200 quests in the game so far, ranging from story missions to chocobo racing. - Weapons can be improved by collecting materials from the world, and battles. Ability points will be obtained once you level up. REMIX: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=951CjSrLd5M
It's that time again, the end of the year is upon us. Rather than exhaustively go over everything of note that happened in 2014, instead we more skim over several various broad topics of interest. 2014 hasn't been a pleasant year overall, but in the spirit of glader tidings we decided to focus as much as we can on better things. Holiday Happenings Abound! I'm here! Beware the Krumpas! Did I mention that I made it this week? The Chocobo is Dashing! It's me! Right here! And we talk with Steve (No really, it's Beefmaster) about AIE in Steam! All that and me coming up right now... AIE NEWS Are you a nomad? Ever have the desire to wander the digital worlds? Well Lotwook has, and this thoughtful AIE member has started a post to see how many other wanderers are out there that might want to group up and jump from game to game and see how they feel.Trying out new games is a lot more fun with friends, and a lot of people are interested in the idea. If you are too, wander into the AIE Community forums and jump into the thread. If you want a serious gaming machine without spending serious money, and you're not afraid to roll up your own sleeves, AIE member Tordormore has posted some pretty impressive details in the Community forums about the machine he just built from scratch - including parts, prices, specs, and the reasons for his choices. If Santa doesn't come through for you this year, check out Tordormre's tips, and build your own best present. As you can imagine, the resources that AIE provides to our members can get a bit costly - web hosting for the AIE website, the UMAMI membership database, membership for Meetup.com, yada, yada. All that has been provided for years out of the goodness of a couple of peoples' hearts and pockets, but we'd like to help them out. We started the AIE Pass the Hat donation campaign earlier this year with the goal of covering AIE's expenses in 2014, about $4,000, and we're proud to say that thanks to the kindness of the AIE membership, we're at 62% of our goal. Unfortunately 2014 is just weeks away, so time is running out. If you'd like to help out, just click the “Donate” button on the front page of the guild website. And speaking of fundraising, it looks like our favorite space pirates are working on their own financial schemes. That's right, the AIE EVE corporation raising taxes - but don't worry, these aren't real taxes, they're entirely fake! The EVE gang has always offered several programs to help new AIE spacers, but now after their amazing retreat from an inferior but overwhelming hostile force, they are finding themselves a little short of funds to carry on the good works. So they are raising the corporate tax rate to 50% on weekends and running special ratting missions to help inject some serious cash flow - and you can help out just by logging on and blowing stuff up! What better way to thumb your nose at the IRS than by paying an outrageous amount of fake taxes to a fake corporation and not sharing any of it with them! Direct from Dark Lord Pelell-patine himself, you are cordially invited to the Two year anniversary of both Star Wars: The Old Republic and the founding of the AIE SWTOR guild itself! The party will be tomorrow, Friday December 20th, at 9pm Eastern, both in game and in vent. So bring your best droid and your prettiest lightsaber crystal and get ready for a Forcefully good time! And speaking of good times in a galaxy far, far away, don't forget to join in on the Life Day event going on right now! Check the AIE SWTOR forums for links to all the details on the activities and rewards, and see Max's special tips for participating in the Life Day snowball fights! The secret's out! A coded message just arrived from an AIE The Secret World courier letting us know all about the all new The Secret World Christmas Event. The event, call A Mother of a Season, will pit you against the evil Krumpus in the land of Niflheim, plus the chance to battle to become the Lord of Misrule,
