If you're a bloke, or have a bloke (young or old) in your life - this is a conversation not to be missed. Once you've listened to it, share it far and wide, as Dr. Zac Seidler, a clinical psychologist and Director of Research at Movember, has the most comprehensive view I've ever come across on what positive masculinity and good men's mental health looks like. The conversation focuses on not just the psychological aspects of men's mental health, but the societal framework that shapes masculinity. The discussion traverses through topics of men's mental health awareness, therapeutic approaches, toxic and positive masculinity, and how we can foster healthier male communities. What You'll Learn: Deciphering Masculinity: We delve into how the traditional concepts of masculinity can be both harmful and beneficial and discuss the need to redefine masculinity in more positive, flexible terms. Therapeutic Approaches: Explore why traditional therapy might not resonate with men and how 'gender-sensitive' therapy can be a more effective approach. Social Connection: The vital role of social networks in men's mental health and how a lack of these connections can lead to severe psychological issues, including suicide. Preventative Measures: Understand the importance of getting ahead of mental health issues through early interventions and community-based programs. Breaking Down Stigmas: Discuss the societal changes needed to address mental health proactively instead of reactively, and the importance of redefining spaces for men to safely express themselves. Key Takeaways: Masculinity Redefined: Emphasising the value of attributes like stoicism, altruism, and service when appropriately contextualised. Supportive Networks: Highlighting the significance of building and maintaining strong social connections throughout life. Therapy Reimagined: Utilising flexible therapeutic practices that consider men's socialisation and comfort levels. Community and Connection: Promoting the idea that safe, non-judgmental spaces are crucial for men's mental health. Early Intervention: The critical role of incorporating mental health teachings and practices from a young age to build resilience. Resources: Engage with Movember's initiatives focusing on men's mental health. Explore gender-sensitive therapy training programs like "Men in Mind" to better understand how to engage men in therapeutic settings. Connect with organisations like "The Man Cave" and "Top Blokes" that offer programs to support young men. Support and Share: Listening to this podcast could inspire not just awareness but also actionable steps towards building better support systems for the men in our lives. This conversation sheds light on the core issues impacting men's mental health and explores innovative solutions designed to uplift and support men in maintaining mental health wellness. To continue this important dialogue on men's mental health, visit Movember's website and explore their extensive resources aimed at creating change and advocating for better health. It's been suggested a lingering "macho" culture is keeping men in Clare from talking about their emotions. Newly-published statistics show Clare had the highest rate of suicide of any county last year, with males making up four fifths of those who died by suicide here. In 2023, a total of 302 people lost their lives as a result of suicide. Of these, a staggering 77% were male. In Clare alone, 25 people died by suicide last year which is the highest figure per capita and the third-highest overall after Dublin and Cork. Chairperson of Clare Suicide Bereavement Support Dan O'Connor says although this must be taken seriously, he hopes with the right supports in place, it will soon level out. Of the 25 people who fell victim to suicide here in 2023, 20 were males which accounts for four fifths of the county's total. This is the highest figure for male suicide in Clare since records began. Despite progress, it's often argued that a stigma still exists around discussing mental health as a male. Director of Clare Samaritans Pat White claims a key goal of organisations such as his own is encouraging men to feel more comfortable in opening up. Volunteer with Clare Suicide Bereavement Support Ciara Flynn says whether dealing with the grief of losing one through suicide or trying to manage other emotional distress, talking always helps. Clare Samaritans can be contacted at 065 116 123 while Pieta House can be reached at 1800 247 247, and 087 369 8315 is the number to get in touch with Clare Suicide Bereavement Support.

In this episode, my guest is Mark Meier, the executive director at Face It, an organisation set up to help men understand and overcome depression and reduce the rate of male suicide. Mark shares his personal struggle with depression. In 2002, he faced severe depression, anxiety, and suicidal thoughts, leading to hospitalisation. His journey of recovery highlights the importance of seeking help and sharing struggles, even when feeling ashamed or burdened. Mark emphasises the significance of talking to someone, reaching out for support, and finding resources to navigate mental health challenges. The stigma surrounding men's mental health is real, but Mark advocates for open conversations, providing care and encouraging men to seek help, irrespective of societal expectations or perceived weakness. Through Face It, Mark offers a safe space for men to share, connect, and receive support without judgment or financial barriers. The podcast delves into strategies for supporting individuals dealing with overwhelming feelings, emphasizing the importance of taking small steps and seeking professional help or reaching out to support groups for guidance. Mark's insights underscore the transformative power of vulnerability, honesty, and the willingness to take that crucial step towards healing and coping with mental health struggles. If you or someone you know is struggling with depression the Face It Foundation website is: https://www.faceitfoundation.org/ or you can email Mark directly at: info@faceitfoundation.org.There are also organisations you can call right now, for example, in the UK, the Samaritans on 116 123, and if you are in the US, you can call the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline.

Male suicide crisis – how gender equality, feminism, and policy engendered this obscure issue – Richard Reeves

It's a well-known fact that the global suicide rate is alarming, with an average of over 700,000 people taking their own lives each year. What isn't remotely well-known, however, is that the suicide rate among males is three to four times higher than that among women. Richard V. Reeves, a senior fellow at the highly respected think tank Brookings Institution, where he directs the Future of the Middle-Class Initiative and co-directs the Center on Children and Families, has extensively researched this dark disparity between genders. Despite strong warnings not to, the father of three boys documented his findings in Of Boys and Men: Why the Modern Male Is Struggling, Why It Matters, and What to Do about It in 2022, a critical but bold undertaking in light of our social landscape which dismisses the plight of men by virtue of its (perceived) infinite inferiority to the history of injustices suffered by women. Reeves sets out the structural and social shifts over recent decades, which have effectively left a vacuum previously occupied by permitted and biologically informed masculinity – now tainted as toxic. In an interview with Reeves, the maligned issue of male malaise and the social, cultural and ideological reasons driving this are discussed – highlighting just how crucial addressing the crisis faced by boys and men is to the well-being and flourishing of BOTH genders. It's our 100th episode release, and we are majorly mixing it up!  This week we bring two male college seniors (one of which is Laurie's eldest son) to chop up some current happenings, along with some things that are on the male minds.  Soup of the week is March Madness, the business of college sports and that popular side hustle called sports betting.  Nuts is the Gwyneth Paltrow scandal, and women's relationship with food and overall health.  For the final topic, the boys blow our minds by choosing to discuss the need for men to be able to share their feelings and emotions, and the concern about male mental/emotional health.  Get Ready To Be Inspired, Educated, Empowered and Entertained! Men's Health, Depression, and Male Suicide with Dr. John Ogrodniczuk– Episode 202

There's about 30,000 people committing suicide in the U.S. each year. If we took a full airplane, 300 people, that's a hundred airplanes per year going down. That's 52 weeks. That's two planes per week going down. And no one's saying this is alarming. In this episode, Dr. Graham Taylor speaks with Dr. John Ogrodniczuk. John is the founder of HeadsUpGuys, a leading online resource for supporting men with depression. John is also a Professor of Psychiatry and Director of the Psychotherapy Program at the University of British Columbia, one of North America's largest medically based psychotherapy training programs. He's also past president of the North American chapter for the Society for Psychotherapy Research. His research focuses on a wide variety of topics including men's mental health, psychodynamic psychotherapy, and personality disorders, which has led to more than 300 publications. He also maintains a private practice through Optimum Life Consulting. Together Graham and John discuss the creation of HeadsUpGuys, the impact of suicide and overwhelming statistics on male suicide, the signs and symptoms that lead to suicide ideation, the need to reconceptualize masculine socialization and importance of mental health literacy. We know that suicidal ideation is transient. So, if we can get support to men to help them through these transient periods when they feel disconnected, we can help them turn things around and get them a path to a better life and give them hope.   For more information about HeadsUpGuys, please visit: https://headsupguys.org To watch Josh's story of recovery on HeadsUpGuys, please visit: https://headsupguys.org/depression-suicide-video-story/ Take a self test to get a better sense of the symptoms of depression, please visit: https://headsupguys.org/mens-depression/self-check/ If you are a Friend or Family and would like to learn how to support someone with suicide ideation, please visit: https://headsupguys.org/for-supporters/ If you would like to find a therapist, please visit: https://headsupguys.org/depression-tips/find-a-therapist/

In the latest episode of the Simply Fit Podcast, I have the pleasure of speaking with Max Dickins. Max is an author, speaker and screenwriter. After proposing to his girlfriend, Max realised that he really didn't have anyone that he could call on to be his best man. He decided to dig deeper to find out where all of his friends had gone over the years and recognised that it wasn't just him who was having this problem, it was an enormous amount of men. A survey taken by Movemeber showed that a third of men have no close friends at all, which really gives us an eye opening look at this problem. In this episode you can expect to learn: Why not having close friendships can be a problem even if your life is going well in many other areas. Why women tend to be far more effective at maintaining friendships. Along with many steps you can take to deepen the relationships with your friends and find new ones too. TW: discussions around suicideThe period between Christmas and New Year can be tough for many. That's why I wanted to bring you an episode designed to help you feel less alone, where my guest talks openly about his own mental health and his desire to make others take care of theirs.Roman Kemp has presented the Capital FM breakfast show since 2017, attracting a weekly audience of almost six million. In August 2020, his best friend and the producer of his radio show, Joe Lyons died by suicide. Lyons' death was deeply shocking to all who loved him, leaving Kemp bereft, angry and searching for answers. Kemp went on to present an acclaimed BBC documentary on male suicide and wrote a bestselling book, Are You Really OK? packed full of personal reflections and practical advice. Here, Roman talks about the impact of Joe's death, about this own mental health and destigmatising the conversation around these issues. Along the way, we chat about his failed driving test, his failed career moves and what it was like having George Michael as a godfather (pretty great, as it turns out). A moving, enlightening and ultimately uplifiting conversation. I hope you take something from it.
