Join leading advocates Joan Blades (MomsRising co-founder), attorney Kimberle Crenshaw and Jessica Neuwirth (ERA Coalition President) to learn the true story of what's at stake and how life would be different and better for women and men. Jill's Cauliflower Soup Recipe: EASY CAULIFLOWER SOUP INGREDIENTS 1 head cauliflower, about 2 lbs. Salt Pepper Unsalted butter (optional, recommended) - you can sub olive oil or a high quality vegan butter like Earth Balance, if you like OPTIONAL TOPPING IDEAS: Drizzle of olive oil or sesame oil, crumbled blue cheese, parmesan, za'atar YOU WILL ALSO NEED: Medium saucepan, blender Total Time: 10 Minutes Servings: 4 servings Kosher Key: Pareve or Dairy Remove the leaves and tough core from the cauliflower. Chop into small florets and carefully clean them. In a medium saucepan, bring 1 quart (4 cups) of water to a boil. Stir in 2 tsp of salt till dissolved. Pour in the cauliflower florets. Bring the water back to a boil and cover. Let the cauliflower cook for about 5 minutes till very soft and tender. Remove the florets from their cooking water using a slotted spoon; reserve the salted cooking water. Place the cooked cauliflower into a blender, filling it halfway. Carefully pour in cooking water, adding till it reaches about halfway up the cooked cauliflower. Cover the blender carefully and blend, scraping the sides as needed, until the soup becomes a smooth puree. You may need to add more cooking water to achieve a soup-like texture. The longer you blend, the more silky and smooth the soup becomes. Add salt, pepper, and butter to taste. I use about 1 tbsp butter (or I've used up to 2 Tbsp) for a whole head of cauliflower (1/2 tbsp per batch). Salt is your friend here, if the soup is tasting bland don't be afraid to add more. You can also add some good quality olive oil or Earth Balance instead of butter if you'd like a richer flavor without dairy. Also add ground fennel. Repeat process with the remaining batch of cauliflower. Serve soup hot. Leftovers will keep for 1-2 days in a covered tupperware container; soup will need to be stirred after reheating. SPECIAL DOUBLE FEATURE EPISODE using the events of POTUS: Or, Behind Every Great Dumbass Are Seven Women Trying To Keep Him Alive as a launching point. 1 | Dismantling Obstacles to Equality: An Urgent Excavation In Honor of Pride and ResistanceIn POTUS, Bernadette (1 of the 7 women trying to keep a great dumbass alive) is the president's look-alike sister and a proud lesbian who quickly proves that street smarts definitely belong in the white house. In conversation with Lea DeLaria (the actress who plays Bernadette), Carol Jenkins ( ERA coalition), Zakiya Tomas (New President & CEO of ERA Coalition), alongside Charlotte Clymer (Writer & Activist), we celebrated Pride month by engaging in the activist work of our queer ancestors and asking how we can move towards an “equal future.” Looking at how passing the Equal Rights Amendment can benefit us all, we got real specific about the intrinsic connections between sex-based discrimination and discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. 2 | My Body, My Choice: Sexual & Reproductive JusticeIn POTUS, Dusty (1 of the 7 women trying to keep a great dumbass alive) is the president's dalliance and one of the most unexpected voices for reproductive rights (and other hot button issues) throughout the show. She's also got a knack for conflict mediation. In conversation with Gisela Chípe (POTUS company), Nancy Northup (President & CEO of Center for Reproductive Rights), and Yolanda Miranda (National Latina Institute for Reproductive Justice), we talked about all things body autonomy including the right to choose, and how organizers across the country are working to protect every person's right to access safe and affordable reproductive care especially in light of the Dobbs decision.Feed your ongoing curiosities about POTUS on Broadway: potus.moretotalkabout.comPlease note: All of these POTUS conversations deeply impact a range of gender and sexual identities. This includes cis women, trans women, trans men, non-binary people, and a range of LGBTQIA+ identities who are marginalized.
Thursday, March 31st, 2022 Carol Jenkins is the President and CEO of the ERA Coalition and the Fund for Women's Equality, sister organizations dedicated to the adoption of the Equal Rights Amendment. We discuss the current state of the ERA and why this constitutional amendment will address the problems of equality, misogyny, and discrimination. The Equal Rights Amendment guarantees equality of rights under the law, regardless of sex. The source of sexism, however, derives directly from the Constitution, which created a gold standard of living that really only applied to white men. That playbook is faulty, and the ERA provides a way to fix it. Despite already gaining the ratification of 38 states, the ERA has not yet been formally published as the 28th amendment. The battle over ratification has lasted for nearly a century. As part of her seven-part print and podcast series for Women's eNews, “How Would the ERA Impact Our Daily Lives?” journalist Rachel Leventhal interviews constitutional scholar and Academic Advisor to The ERA Project at Columbia Law School, Professor Julie Suk, about the structural impediments that were built-in to the US Constitution that keep women (along with other marginalized groups) from changing the Constitution in a way that would enable greater equality and more democracy. But even in the face of all these structural roadblocks, women have navigated nimbly, increased their political power, and continue to make significant gains. ABOUT THE SERIES: “How Would the ERA Impact Our Daily Lives?” A few months ago, journalist Rachel Leventhal had a conversation with three young women of color about gender equality and the Equal Rights Amendment. It was one of those conversations that yielded more questions than answers, namely: Why don't women already have constitutional equality, and what would it really mean if we did? In this series, through interviews with lawyers, scholars, activists, and the young women themselves, Rachel sets out to uncover answers to the question many of us have: “How Would the ERA Impact Our Daily Lives?” Hoping to keep her young friends empowered and engaged in the face of rollbacks and uncertainty, this print and podcast series is her “love letter” to them. The interviews for this series took place January, 2022, at the ERA's two-year ratification anniversary, the date it met all the constitutional requirements to become the law of the land. You may think the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA), which states “Equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any state on account of sex,” is already the law of the land, maybe, kind of. And it is, but it is complicated. To explain the history of the ERA of and what is happening now so we can get engaged, L. Joy brings Carol Jenkins, CEO of ERA Coalition, to the front of the class. But first, L. Joy gives us the primer we need on how we amend the Constitution and brings Vote Mama Candidate Spotlight Jen Jordan to the front of the class.

Kimberly Peeler-Allen is back with Mallory two years later in the MILK Studio. Kimberly has been working at the intersection of race, gender and politics for almost 20 years. She is the Co-founder of Higher Heights, a national organization building the political power and leadership of Black women from the voting booth to elected office. Higher Heights has helped drive the national narrative about the power of Black women voters and has inspired countless Black women to step into their power whether it is as voters, activists or elected leaders. Kimberly and her Co-Founder Glynda Carr built Higher Heights from an idea on the back of a placemat into a network of over 90,000 members, donors and activists across the country that have helped elect 10 Black women to Congress, 1 Black woman to the US Senate and grow the number of Black women in statewide executive office and leading our nation’s largest cities. A highly skilled political fundraiser and event planner, Kimberly was the principal of Peeler-Allen Consulting, LLC from 2003 to 2014, the only African American full-time fundraising consulting firm in New York State. Kimberly served as finance director for Letitia James’ successful bid to become Public Advocate of the City of New York and the first African American woman elected citywide in New York’s history. Kimberly also served as the Co-Executive Director of New York Attorney General Letitia James' Transition Committee when she was elected to that office in November of 2018. In 2018, Kimberly was selected as one of the Roddenberry Fellowship's 20 established and emerging activists to devote an entire year to projects that will make the U.S. more inclusive and equitable through their inaugural cohort. Kimberly also serves as a board member of ERA Coalition and the Fund for Women's Equity. She is currently a visiting professor at the Center for American Women and Politics at Eagleton Institute of Politics at Rutgers University. She is drawing on her life experience as an organizer and operative to write her first book, Activist Momma, a celebration of this intersection and the gifts that mothers bring to movement work. It profiles the lives of a group of black women who are leading some of the most impactful movements at the local and national level. Follow Kimberly on twitter @kimberp_a and @higherheights and @higherheightsPAC to support getting more Black women into elected office. "Social impact was always in our DNA. We were like a mini B Corp: we cared about our employees, we cared about paying a living wage. We cared about paying their health insurance and sick days. We really were walking the walk," says Suzanne. "Looking at my investments, I wanted to start using my voice. It just can't be about only making money an investing in things you don't agree with."

She'll tell us about the first congressional hearings on the ERA in 35 years and how close we are to getting equal rights for women. We got our files mixed up this morning! This is the corrected show for Tuesday, May 7. The proposed Equal Rights Amendment is simple: It would prohibit discrimination on the basis of sex. To become part of the U.S. Constitution, the ERA has to be passed not just in Congress, but in 38 state legislatures. In 2017, Nevada became the 36th state to pass it. Last year, Illinois became the 37th. And last week, Congress held a hearing on the plan. Guest: Carol Jenkins, co-president and CEO of the ERA Coalition and the Fund for Women’s Equality. One of the things that will be incredibly important this year, in 2018, is everyone's action to vote. And to vote out the people who don't support our issues and vote in the people who do. Because this year has really shown people that politics touches your life, whether or not you like it. It is so important to use your vote and civic responsibility to have it touch you in a positive way. — Bettina Hager Bettina Hager is the COO and DC Director of the ERA Coalition. A near-total majority of Americans believes men and women should enjoy equal protection under the constitution. Paradoxically, the greatest obstacle to the passage of the Equal Rights Amendment that would enshrine this equality in the U.S. constitution is the mistaken belief, by over 80% of Americans, that this protection is already guaranteed. Learn about the history of the Equal Rights Amendment and find out what you can do to ensure its passage in our time.
